Adiabatic regularization of functional determinants in cosmology and radiative corrections during inflation

We express the in-in functional determinant giving the one-loop effective potential for a scalar field propagating in a cosmological spacetime in terms of the mode functions specifying the vacuum of the theory and then apply adiabatic regularization to make this bare potential finite. In this setup, the adiabatic regularization offers a particular renormalization prescription that isolates the effects of the cosmic expansion. We apply our findings to determine the radiative corrections to the classical inflaton potentials in scalar field inflationary models and also we derive an effective potential for the superhorizon curvature perturbation ζ encoding its scatterings with the subhorizon modes. Although the resulting modifications to the cosmological observables like nongaussianity turn out to be small, they distinctively appear after horizon crossing.

On the breakdown of the curvature perturbation ζ during reheating

It is known that in single scalar field inflationary models the standard curvature perturbation ζ, which is supposedly conserved at superhorizon scales, diverges during reheating at times dΦ/dt=0, i.e. when the time derivative of the background inflaton field vanishes. This happens because the comoving gauge ϕ=0, where ϕ denotes the inflaton perturbation, breaks down when dΦ/dt=0. The issue is usually bypassed by averaging out the inflaton oscillations but strictly speaking the evolution of ζ is ill posed mathematically. We solve this problem in the free theory by introducing a family of smooth gauges that still eliminates the inflaton fluctuation ϕ in the Hamiltonian formalism and gives a well behaved curvature perturbation ζ, which is now rigorously conserved at superhorizon scales. At the linearized level, this conserved variable can be used to unambiguously propagate the inflationary perturbations from the end of inflation to subsequent epochs. We discuss the implications of our results for the inflationary predictions.

Entropy mode loops and cosmological correlations during perturbative reheating

Recently, it has been shown that during preheating the entropy modes circulating in the loops, which correspond to the inflaton decay products, meaningfully modify the cosmological correlation functions at superhorizon scales. In this paper, we determine the significance of the same effect when reheating occurs in the perturbative regime. In a typical two scalar field model, the magnitude of the loop corrections are shown to depend on several parameters like the background inflaton amplitude in the beginning of reheating, the inflaton decay rate and the inflaton mass. Although the loop contributions turn out to be small as compared to the preheating case, they still come out larger than the loop effects during inflation.

Loops in reheating and cosmological perturbations

We show that in scalar field inflationary models, the loop corrections in reheating corresponding to the decay of the inflaton can cause nontrivial superhorizon evolution of the curvature perturbation. The effect turns out to be prominent when the decay occurs via parametric resonance, even indicating the breakdown of the perturbation theory, as we demonstrate in a specific model.

Supersymmetric Warped AdS in Extended Topologically Massive Supergravity

We determine the most general form of off-shell N=(1,1) supergravity field configurations in three dimensions by requiring that at least one off-shell Killing spinor exists. We then impose the field equations of the topologically massive off-shell supergravity and find a class of solutions whose properties crucially depend on the norm of the auxiliary vector field. These are spacelike-squashed and timelike-stretched AdS_3 for the spacelike and timelike norms, respectively. At the transition point where the norm vanishes, the solution is null warped AdS_3. This occurs when the coefficient of the Lorentz-Chern-Simons term is related to the AdS radius by $μ\ell=2$. We find that the spacelike-squashed AdS_3 can be modded out by a suitable discrete subgroup of the isometry group, yielding an extremal black hole solution which avoid closed timelike curves.

In-in formalism, pseudo-instantons and rethinking quantum cosmology

Unlike flat space quantum field theories that focus on scattering amplitudes, the main observables in quantum cosmology are correlation functions. The systematic way of calculating correlators is called in-in formalism, which requires only a single asymptotic region, i.e. past infinity. The rules in perturbation theory and the path integral measure are very different for in-in and in-out formalisms, and thus the results which are standard in one approach may not necessarily hold in the other one. We show that stationary phase approximation works completely different for a scalar in-in path integral. Hence, in a cosmological background there are solutions, pseudo-instantons, that allow tunneling between locally stable vacua even in infinite volume, which is counterintuitive from an in-out perspective. We argue that various familiar notions of in-out formalism must be reexamined in the in-in formalism, which might have important consequences for quantum cosmology.

Exact RG Flow in an Expanding Universe and Screening of the Cosmological Constant

We obtain the exact renormalization group (RG) flow equation for a self interacting real scalar field in an expanding cosmological background. The beta functional for the potential in the local potential approximation is determined in terms of the mode functions defining the vacuum of the theory. For a scalar in an inflating universe, which is released in the Bunch-Davies vacuum, the flow equation is analyzed in detail using the optimized cutoff function for the quartically truncated potential. In that case, the constant term in the potential, which can in fact be viewed as the cosmological constant, decreases as the IR cutoff is removed, supporting the existence of a quantum mechanical screening mechanism. On the other hand, the running of the quartic coupling constant at IR is altered by the expansion, which seems to affect the quantum triviality of the theory.

The Functional Measure for the In-In Path Integral

The in-in path integral of a scalar field propagating in a fixed background is formulated in a suitable function space. The free kinetic operator, whose inverse gives the propagators of the in-in perturbation theory, becomes essentially self adjoint after imposing appropriate boundary conditions. An explicit spectral representation is given for the scalar in the flat space and the standard propagators are rederived using this representation. In this way the subtle boundary path integral over the field configurations at the return time is handled straightforwardly. It turns out that not only the values of the forward (+) and the backward (-) evolving fields but also their time derivatives must be matched at the return time, which is mainly overlooked in the literature. This formulation also determines the field configurations that are included in the path integral uniquely. We show that some of the recently suggested instanton-like solutions corresponding to the stationary phases of the cosmological in-in path integrals can be rigorously identified as limits of sequences in the function space.

Stationary Phase Approximation and Instanton-like States for Cosmological In-In Path Integrals

The path integral, which generates in-in correlation functions of a scalar field in a cosmological spacetime, is shown to admit nontrivial classical solutions as stationary phases. Although the solutions exist for Lorentzian signature, their contribution to the path integral is reminiscent that of the instantons in Euclidean field theories. When the scalar potential has more than one locally stable vacua, the correlation functions receive contributions from all of them via these instanton-like configurations, which is similar to tunneling. We present some explicit solutions for toy models and discuss possible implications of our results.

Comments on the Canonical Measure in Cosmology

In the mini-superspace approximation to cosmology, the canonical measure can be used to compute probabilities when a cutoff is introduced in the phase space to regularize the divergent measure. However, the region initially constrained by a simple cutoff evolves non-trivially under the Hamiltonian flow. We determine the deformation of the regularized phase space along the orbits when a cutoff is introduced for the scale factor of the universe or for the Hubble parameter. In the former case, we find that the cutoff for the scale factor varies in the phase space and effectively decreases as one evolves backwards in time. In the later case, we calculate the probability of slow-roll inflation in a chaotic model with a massive scalar, which turns out to be cutoff dependent but not exponentially suppressed. We also investigate the measure problem for non-abelian gauge fields giving rise to inflation.

Cosmological backreaction of a quantized massless scalar field

We consider the backreaction problem of a quantized minimally coupled massless scalar field in cosmology. The adiabatically regularized stress-energy tensor in a general Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background is approximately evaluated by using the fact that subhorizon modes evolve adiabatically and superhorizon modes are frozen. The vacuum energy density is verified to obey a new first order differential equation depending on a dimensionless parameter of order unity, which calibrates subhorizon/superhorizon division. We check the validity of the approximation by calculating the corresponding vacuum energy densities in fixed backgrounds, which are shown to agree with the known results in de Sitter space and space-times undergoing power law expansions. We then apply our findings to slow-roll inflationary models. Although backreaction effects are found to be negligible during the near exponential expansion, the vacuum energy density generated during this period might be important at later stages since it decreases slower than radiation or dust.

Uncertainty relations for cosmological particle creation and existence of large fluctuations in reheating

We derive an uncertainty relation for the energy density and pressure of a quantum scalar field in a time-dependent, homogeneous and isotropic, classical background, which implies the existence of large fluctuations comparable to their vacuum expectation values. A similar uncertainty relation is known to hold for the field square since the field can be viewed as a Gaussian random variable. We discuss possible implications of these results for the reheating process in scalar field driven inflationary models, where reheating is achieved by the decay of the coherently oscillating inflaton field. Specifically we argue that the evolution after backreaction can seriously be altered by the existence of these fluctuations. For example, in one model the coherence of the inflaton oscillations is found to be completely lost in a very short time after backreaction starts. Therefore we argue that entering a smooth phase in thermal equilibrium is questionable in such models and reheating might destroy the smoothness attained by inflation.

Hubble's law and faster than light expansion speeds

Naively applying Hubble's law to a sufficiently distant object gives a receding velocity larger than the speed of light. By discussing a very similar situation in special relativity, we argue that Hubble's law is meaningful only for nearby objects with non-relativistic receding speeds. To support this claim, we note that in a curved spacetime manifold it is not possible to directly compare tangent vectors at different points, and thus there is no natural definition of relative velocity between two spatially separated objects in cosmology. We clarify the geometrical meaning of the Hubble's receding speed v by showing that in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime if the four-velocity vector of a comoving object is parallel-transported along the straight line in flat comoving coordinates to the position of a second comoving object, then v/c actually becomes the rapidity of the local Lorentz transformation, which maps the fixed four-velocity vector to the transported one.

Stress-Energy Tensor of Adiabatic Vacuum in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Spacetimes

We compute the leading order contribution to the stress-energy tensor corresponding to the modes of a quantum scalar field propagating in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with arbitrary coupling to the scalar curvature, whose exact mode functions can be expanded as an infinite adiabatic series. While for a massive field this is a good approximation for all modes when the mass of the field m is larger than the Hubble parameter H, for a massless field only the subhorizon modes with comoving wave-numbers larger than some fixed k* obeying k*/a>H can be analyzed in this way. As infinities coming from adiabatic zero, second and fourth order expressions are removed by adiabatic regularization, the leading order finite contribution to the stress-energy tensor is given by the adiabatic order six terms, which we determine explicitly. For massive and massless modes these have the magnitudes H^6/m^2 and H^6a^2/k*^2, respectively, and higher order corrections are suppressed by additional powers of (H/m)^2 and (Ha/k*)^2. When the scale factor in the conformal time ηis a simple power a(η)=(1/η)^n, the stress-energy tensor obeys P=wρwith w=(n-2)/n for massive and w=(n-6)/(3n) for massless modes. In that case, the adiabaticity is eventually lost when 0<n<1 for massive and when 0<n<3/2 for massless fields since in time H/m and Ha/k* become order one. We discuss the implications of these results for de Sitter and other cosmologically relevant spaces.

Deformations of Cosmological Solutions of D=11 Supergravity

We study Lunin-Maldacena deformations of cosmological backgrounds of D=11 supergravity which gives an easy way to generate solutions with nonzero 4-form flux starting from solutions of pure Einstein equations which possess at least three U(1) isometries. We illustrate this on the vacuum S-brane solution from which the usual SM2-brane solution is obtained. Applying the method again, one either gets the recently found S-brane system where contribution of the Chern-Simons term to field equations is non-zero or the SM2-SM2(0) intersection, depending on which U(1) directions are used during the process. Repeated usage of the procedure gives rise to configurations with several overlapping S-branes some of which are new. We also employ this method to construct two more new solutions and make comments about accelerating cosmologies that follow from such deformed solutions after compactification to (1+3)-dimensions.

Cosmological Evolution of Vacuum and Cosmic Acceleration

It is known that the unregularized expressions for the stress-energy tensor components corresponding to subhorizon and superhorizon vacuum fluctuations of a massless scalar field in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background are characterized by the equation of state parameters w=1/3 and w=-1/3, which are not sufficient to produce cosmological acceleration. However, the form of the adiabatically regularized finite stress-energy tensor turns out to be completely different. By using the fact that vacuum subhorizon modes evolve nearly adiabatically and superhorizon modes have w=-1/3, we approximately determine the regularized stress-energy tensor, whose conservation is utilized to fix the time dependence of the vacuum energy density. We then show that vacuum energy density grows from zero up to H^4 in about one Hubble time, vacuum fluctuations give positive acceleration of the order of H^4/M_p^2 and they can completely alter the cosmic evolution of the universe dominated otherwise by cosmological constant, radiation or pressureless dust. Although the magnitude of the acceleration is tiny to explain the observed value today, our findings indicate that the cosmological backreaction of vacuum fluctuations must be taken into account in early stages of cosmic evolution.

Fluctuations of Quantum Fields in a Classical Background and Reheating

We consider the particle creation process associated with a quantum field χin a time-dependent, homogeneous and isotropic, classical background. It is shown that the field square χ^2, the energy density and the pressure of the created particles have large fluctuations comparable to their vacuum expectation values. Possible effects of these fluctuations on the reheating process after inflation are discussed. After determining the correlation length of the fluctuations in two different models, corresponding to the decay in the parametric resonance regime and in the perturbation theory, it is found that these fluctuations should be taken into account in the final thermalization process, in the back-reaction effects and when the formation of primordial black holes is considered. In both models, by comparing quantum and thermal fluctuations with each other it is observed that very quick thermalization after the complete inflaton decay is not always possible even when the interaction rates are large. On the other hand, when the back-reaction effects are included during the preheating stage, the coherence of the inflaton oscillations is shown to be lost because of the fluctuations in χ^2. Finally, we note that a large fluctuation in the energy density may cause a black hole to form and we determine the fraction of total energy density that goes into such primordial black holes in the model of preheating we consider.

Chern-Simons S-Brane Solutions in M-theory and Accelerating Cosmologies

We construct an intersecting S-brane solution of 11-dimensional supergravity for which the contribution of the Chern-Simons term to the field equations is non-zero. After studying some of its properties, we consider three different compactifications (each with 3 separate subcases) of this system to 4-dimensions. Two of these give accelerating cosmologies, however their expansion factors are of order unity. We also find two static versions of this configuration and its dimensional reduction to type IIA theory.
