Attaining the exponent $5/4$ for the sum-product problem in finite fields

We improve the exponent in the finite field sum-product problem from $11/9$ to $5/4$, improving the results of Rudnev, Shakan and Shkredov. That is, we show that if $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p$ has cardinality $|A|\ll p^{1/2}$ then \[ \max\{|A\pm A|,|AA|\} \gtrsim |A|^\frac54 \] and \[ \max\{|A\pm A|,|A/A|\}\gtrsim |A|^\frac54\,. \]

Improved bounds on Gauss sums in arbitrary finite fields

Let $q$ be a power of a prime and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field consisting of $q$ elements. We establish new explicit estimates on Gauss sums of the form $S_n(a) = \sum_{x\in \mathbb{F}_q}ψ_a(x^n)$, where $ψ_a$ is a nontrivial additive character. In particular, we show that one has a nontrivial upper bound on $|S_n(a)|$ for certain values of $n$ of order up to $q^{1/2 + 1/68}$. Our results improve on the previous best known bound, due to Zhelezov.

Szemerédi-Trotter type results in arbitrary finite fields

Let $q$ be a power of a prime and $\mathbb{F}_q$ the finite field consisting of $q$ elements. We prove explicit upper bounds on the number of incidences between lines and Cartesian products in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$. We also use our results on point-line incidences to give new sum-product type estimates concerning sums of reciprocals.

A new sum-product estimate in prime fields

In this paper we obtain a new sum-product estimate in prime fields. In particular, we show that if $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ satisfies $|A|\le p^{64/117}$ then $$ \max\{|A\pm A|, |AA|\} \gtrsim |A|^{39/32}. $$ Our argument builds on and improves some recent results of Shakan and Shkredov which use the eigenvalue method to reduce to estimating a fourth moment energy and the additive energy $E^+(P)$ of some subset $P\subseteq A+A$. Our main novelty comes from reducing the estimation of $E^+(P)$ to a point-plane incidence bound of Rudnev rather than a point line incidence bound of Stevens and de Zeeuw as done by Shakan and Shkredov.

On growth of the set $A(A+1)$ in arbitrary finite fields

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$, where $q$ is a power of a prime. For a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_q$, under certain structural restrictions, we prove a new explicit lower bound on the size of the product set $A(A + 1)$. Our result improves on the previous best known bound due to Zhelezov and holds under more relaxed restrictions.

Tie-Line Characteristics based Partitioning for Distributed Optimization of Power Systems

The convergence performance of distributed optimization algorithms is of significant importance to solve optimal power flow (OPF) in a distributed fashion. In this paper, we aim to provide some insights on how to partition a power system to achieve a high convergence rate of distributed algorithms for the solution of an OPF problem. We analyzed several features of the power network to find a set of suitable partitions with the aim of convergence performance improvement. We model the grid as a graph and decompose it based on the edge betweenness graph clustering. This technique provides several partitions. To find an effective partitioning, we merge the partitions obtained by clustering technique and analyze them based on characteristics of tie-lines connecting neighboring partitions. The main goal is to find the best set of partitions with respect to the convergence speed. We deploy analytical target cascading (ATC) method to distributedly solve optimization subproblems. We test the proposed algorithm on the IEEE 118-bus system. The results show that the algorithm converges faster with a proper partitioning, whereas improper partitioning leads to a large number of iterations

A comprehensive study of Game Theory applications for smart grids, demand side management programs, and transportation networks

Game theory is a powerful analytical tool for modeling decision makers strategies, behaviors and interactions. Act and decisions of a decision maker can benefit or negatively impact other decision makers interests. Game theory has been broadly used in economics, politics and engineering field. For example, game theory can model decision making procedure of different companies competing with each other to maximize their profit. Here, we present a brief introduction of game theory formulation and its applications. The focus of the chapter is non-cooperative Stackelberg game model and its applications in solving power system related problems. These applications include but not limited to; expanding transmission network, improving power system reliability, containing market power in the electricity market, solving power system dispatch, executing demand response and allocating resource in a wireless system. Finally, this chapter elaborates on solving a game theory problem through an example.

Points on polynomial curves in small boxes modulo an integer

Given an integer $q$ and a polynomial $f\in \mathbb Z_{q}[X]$ of degree $d$ with coefficients in the residue ring $\mathbb Z_q=\mathbb Z/q\mathbb Z,$ we obtain new results concerning the number of solutions to congruences of the form $$y\equiv f(x) \pmod{q},$$ with integer variables lying in some cube $\mathcal B$ of side length $H$. Our argument uses ideas of Cilleruelo, Garaev, Ostafe and Shparlinski which reduces the problem to the Vinogradov mean value theorem and a lattice point counting problem. We treat the lattice point problem differently using transference principles from the Geometry of Numbers. We also use a variant of the main conjecture for the Vinogradov mean value theorem of Bourgain, Demeter and Guth and of Wooley which allows one to deal with rather sparse sets.
