Spectral Singularities and Whispering Gallery Modes of a Cylindrical Gain Medium

Complex scattering potentials can admit scattering states that behave exactly like a zero-width resonance. Their energy is what mathematicians call a spectral singularity. This phenomenon admits optical realizations in the form of lasing at the threshold gain, and its time-reversal is responsible for antilasing. We study spectral singularities and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of a cylindrical gain medium. In particular, we introduce a new class of WGMs that support a spectral singularity and, as a result, have a divergent quality factor. These singular gallery modes (SGMs) are excited only if the system has a positive gain coefficient, but typically the required gain is extremely small. More importantly given any amount of gain, there are SGMs requiring smaller gain than this amount. This means that, in principle, the system lacks a lasing threshold. Furthermore, the abundance of these modes allows for configurations where a particular value of the gain coefficient yields an effective excitation of two distant SGMs. This induces lasing at two different wavelengths.

Nonlinear Spectral Singularities for Localized Nonlinearities

We introduce a notion of spectral singularity that applies for a general class of nonlinear Schreodinger operators involving a confined nonlinearity. The presence of the nonlinearity does not break the parity-reflection symmetry of spectral singularities but makes them amplitude-dependent. Nonlinear spectral singularities are, therefore, associated with a resonance effect that produces amplified waves with a specific amplitude-wavelength profile. We explore the consequences of this phenomenon for a complex delta-function potential that is subject to a general confined nonlinearity.

Nonlinear Spectral Singularities and Lasing Threshold Condition

A spectral singularity is a mathematical notion with an intriguing physical realization in terms of certain zero-width resonances. In optics it manifests as lasing at the threshold gain. We explore the application of their recently-developed nonlinear generalization in the study of the effect of a nonlinearity on the lasing threshold condition for an infinite planar slab of gain medium. In particular, for a Kerr nonlinearity, we derive an explicit expression for the intensity of the emitted waves from the slab and discuss the implications of our results for the time-reversed system that acts as a coherent perfect absorber.

Pseudo-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics with Unbounded Metric Operators

We extend the formulation of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics to eta-pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian operators H with an unbounded metric operator eta. In particular, we give the details of the construction of the physical Hilbert space, observables, and equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian for the case that H has a real and discrete spectrum and its eigenvectors belong to the domain of eta and consequently its positive square root.

Invisibility and PT-symmetry

For a general complex scattering potential defined on a real line, we show that the equations governing invisibility of the potential are invariant under the combined action of parity and time-reversal (PT) transformation. We determine the PT-symmetric an well as non-PT-symmetric invisible configurations of an easily realizable exactly solvable model that consists of a two-layer planar slab consisting of optically active material. Our analysis shows that although PT-symmetry is neither necessary nor sufficient for the invisibility of a scattering potential, it plays an important role in the characterization of the invisible configurations. A byproduct of our investigation is the discovery of certain configurations of our model that are effectively reflectionless in a spectral range as wide as several hundred nanometers.

Perturbative Analysis of Spectral Singularities and Their Optical Realizations

We develop a perturbative method of computing spectral singularities of a Schreodinger operator defined by a general complex potential that vanishes outside a closed interval. These can be realized as zero-width resonances in optical gain media and correspond to a lasing effect that occurs at the threshold gain. Their time-reversed copies yield coherent perfect absorption of light that is also known as an antilaser. We use our general results to establish the exactness of the n-th order perturbation theory for an arbitrary complex potential consisting of n delta-functions, obtain an exact expression for the transfer matrix of these potentials, and examine spectral singularities of complex barrier potentials of arbitrary shape. In the context of optical spectral singularities, these correspond to inhomogeneous gain media.

Self-dual Spectral Singularities and Coherent Perfect Absorbing Lasers without PT-symmetry

A PT-symmetric optically active medium that lases at the threshold gain also acts as a complete perfect absorber at the laser wavelength. This is because spectral singularities of PT-symmetric complex potentials are always accompanied by their time-reversal dual. We investigate the significance of PT-symmetry for the appearance of these self-dual spectral singularities. In particular, using a realistic optical system we show that self-dual spectral singularities can emerge also for non-PT-symmetric configurations. This signifies the existence of non-PT-symmetric CPA-lasers.

Optical Spectral Singularities and Coherent Perfect Absorption in a Two-Layer Spherical Medium

An optical spectral singularity is a zero-width resonance that corresponds to lasing at threshold gain. Its time-reversal causes coherent perfect absorption of light and forms the theoretical basis of antilasing. In this article we explore optical spectral singularities of a two-layer spherical medium. In particular, we examine the cases that a gain medium is coated by a thin layer of high-refractive index glass and a spherical glass covered by a layer of gain material. In the former case, the coating reduces the minimum radius required for exciting spectral singularities and gives rise to the formation of clusters of spectral singularities separated by wide spectral gaps. In the latter case, the coating leads to a doubling of the number of spectral singularities.

Imaginary-Scaling versus Indefinite-Metric Quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator

Using the Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator as a toy model, we outline a consistent alternative to the indefinite-metric quantization scheme that does not violate unitarity. We describe the basic mathematical structure of this method by giving an explicit construction of the Hilbert space of state vectors and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators. The latter satisfy the usual bosonic commutation relation and differ from those of the indefinite-metric theories by a sign in the definition of the creation operator. This change of sign achieves a definitization of the indefinite-metric that gives life to the ghost states without changing their contribution to the energy spectrum.

Spectral Singularities of a Complex Spherical Barrier Potential and Their Optical Realization

The mathematical notion of a spectral singularity admits a physical interpretation as a zero-width resonance. It finds an optical realization as a certain type of lasing effect that occurs at the threshold gain. We explore spectral singularities of a complex spherical barrier potential and study their realization as transverse spherical electromagnetic waves emitted by a gain medium with a spherical geometry. In particular, for a typical dye laser material, we obtain a lower bound on the size of the gain medium for the occurence of this kind of spectral singularities.

Spectral Singularities of a General Point Interaction

We study the problem of locating spectral singularities of a general complex point interaction with a support at a single point. We also determine the bound states, examine the special cases where the point interaction is P-, T-, and PT-symmetric, and explore the issue of the coalescence of spectral singularities and bound states.

Semiclassical Analysis of Spectral Singularities and Their Applications in Optics

Motivated by possible applications of spectral singularities in optics, we develop a semiclassical method of computing spectral singularities. We use this method to examine the spectral singularities of a planar slab gain medium whose gain coefficient varies due to the exponential decay of the intensity of pumping beam inside the medium. For both singly- and doubly-pumped samples, we obtain universal upper bounds on the decay constant beyond which no lasing occurs. Furthermore, we show that the dependence of the wavelength of the spectral singularities on the value of the decay constant is extremely mild. This is an indication of the stability of optical spectral singularities.

Optical Spectral Singularities as Threshold Resonances

Spectral singularities are among generic mathematical features of complex scattering potentials. Physically they correspond to scattering states that behave like zero-width resonances. For a simple optical system, we show that a spectral singularity appears whenever the gain coefficient coincides with its threshold value and other parameters of the system are selected properly. We explore a concrete realization of spectral singularities for a typical semiconductor gain medium and propose a method of constructing a tunable laser that operates at threshold gain.

Pseudo-Hermitian Representation of Quantum Mechanics

A diagonalizable non-Hermitian Hamiltonian having a real spectrum may be used to define a unitary quantum system, if one modifies the inner product of the Hilbert space properly. We give a comprehensive and essentially self-contained review of the basic ideas and techniques responsible for the recent developments in this subject. We provide a critical assessment of the role of the geometry of the Hilbert space in conventional quantum mechanics to reveal the basic physical principle motivating our study. We then offer a survey of the necessary mathematical tools and elaborate on a number of relevant issues of fundamental importance. In particular, we discuss the role of the antilinear symmetries such as PT, the true meaning and significance of the charge operators C and the CPT-inner products, the nature of the physical observables, the equivalent description of such models using ordinary Hermitian quantum mechanics, the pertaining duality between local-non-Hermitian versus nonlocal-Hermitian descriptions of their dynamics, the corresponding classical systems, the pseudo-Hermitian canonical quantization scheme, various methods of calculating the (pseudo-) metric operators, subtleties of dealing with time-dependent quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonians and the path-integral formulation of the theory, and the structure of the state space and its ramifications for the quantum Brachistochrone problem. We also explore some concrete physical applications of the abstract concepts and tools that have been developed in the course of this investigation. These include applications in nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, quantum cosmology, electromagnetic wave propagation, open quantum systems, magnetohydrodynamics, quantum chaos, and biophysics.

A Hamiltonian Formulation of the Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator that Yields a Stable and Unitary Quantum System

We offer a new Hamiltonian formulation of the classical Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator and consider its canonical quantization. We show that for the non-degenerate case where the frequencies differ, the quantum Hamiltonian operator is a Hermitian operator with a positive spectrum, i.e., the quantum system is both stable and unitary. A consistent description of the degenerate case based on a Hamiltonian that is quadratic in momenta requires its analytic continuation into a complex Hamiltonian system possessing a generalized PT-symmetry (an involutive antilinear symmetry). We devise a real description of this complex system, derive an integral of motion for it, and explore its quantization.

Conceptual Aspects of PT-Symmetry and Pseudo-Hermiticity: A status report

We survey some of the main conceptual developments in the study of PT-symmetric and pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian operators that have taken place during the past ten years or so. We offer a precise mathematical description of a quantum system and its representations that allows us to describe the idea of unitarization of a quantum system by modifying the inner product of the Hilbert space. We discuss the role and importance of the quantum-to-classical correspondence principle that provides the physical interpretation of the observables in quantum mechanics. Finally, we address the problem of constructing an underlying classical Hamiltonian for a unitary quantum system defined by an a priori non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.

Spectral Singularities and a New Method of Generating Tunable Lasers

We use a simple setup based on an infinite planar slab gain medium with no mirrors to explore the possibility of realizing a recently discovered resonance effect related to the mathematical concept of spectral singularity. In particular we determine the range of the gain coefficient g and the width L of the gain region required to achieve this resonance effect. We outline a method that allows for amplifying waves of desired wavelength by adjusting the gain coefficient (pumping intensity). We expect this method to have important practical applications in building tunable lasers
