Quiver superconformal index and giant gravitons: asymptotics and expansions

We study asymptotics of the $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal index for toric quiver gauge theories. Using graph-theoretic and algebraic factorization techniques, we obtain a cycle expansion for the large-$N$ index in terms of the $R$-charge-weighted adjacency matrix. Applying saddle-point techniques at the on-shell $R$-charges, we determine the asymptotic degeneracy in the univariate specialization for $\hat{A}_{m}$, and along the main diagonal for the bivariate index for $\mathcal{N}=4$ and $\hat{A}_{3}$. In these cases we find $\ln |c_{n}| \sim \gamma n^{\frac{1}{2}}+ \beta \ln n + \alpha$ (Hardy-Ramanujan type). We also identify polynomial growth for $dP3$, $Y^{3,3}$ and $Y^{p,0}$, and give numerical evidence for $\gamma$ in further $Y^{p,p}$ examples. Finally, we generalize Murthy's giant graviton expansion via the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and Borodin-Okounkov formula to multi-matrix models relevant for quivers.

Universal Cusp Scaling in Random Partitions

We study the universal scaling limit of random partitions obeying the Schur measure. Extending our previous analysis [arXiv:2012.06424], we obtain the higher-order Pearcey kernel describing the multi-critical behavior in the cusp scaling limit. We explore the gap probability associated with the higher Pearcey kernel, and derive the coupled nonlinear differential equation and the asymptotic behavior in the large gap limit.

Mahler Measuring the Genetic Code of Amoebae

Amoebae from tropical geometry and the Mahler measure from number theory play important roles in quiver gauge theories and dimer models. Their dependencies on the coefficients of the Newton polynomial closely resemble each other, and they are connected via the Ronkin function. Genetic symbolic regression methods are employed to extract the numerical relationships between the 2d and 3d amoebae components and the Mahler measure. We find that the volume of the bounded complement of a d-dimensional amoeba is related to the gas phase contribution to the Mahler measure by a degree-d polynomial, with d = 2 and 3. These methods are then further extended to numerical analyses of the non-reflexive Mahler measure. Furthermore, machine learning methods are used to directly learn the topology of 3d amoebae, with strong performance. Additionally, analytic expressions for boundaries of certain amoebae are given.

Crystal Melting, BPS Quivers and Plethystics

We study the refined and unrefined crystal/BPS partition functions of D6-D2-D0 brane bound states for all toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without compact 4-cycles and some non-toric examples. They can be written as products of (generalized) MacMahon functions. We check our expressions and use them as vacuum characters to study the gluings. We then consider the wall crossings and discuss possible crystal descriptions for different chambers. We also express the partition functions in terms of plethystic exponentials. For $\mathbb{C}^3$ and tripled affine quivers, we find their connections to nilpotent Kac polynomials. Similarly, the partition functions of D4-D2-D0 brane bound states can be obtained by replacing the (generalized) MacMahon functions with the inverse of (generalized) Euler functions.

Mahler Measure for a Quiver Symphony

Adopting the Mahler measure from number theory, we introduce it to toric quiver gauge theories, and study some of its salient features and physical implications. We propose that the Mahler measure is a universal measure for the quiver, encoding its dynamics with the monotonic behaviour along a so-called Mahler flow including two special points at isoradial and tropical limits. Along the flow, the amoeba, from tropical geometry, provides geometric interpretations for the dynamics of the quiver. In the isoradial limit, the maximization of Mahler measure is shown to be equivalent to $a$-maximization. The Mahler measure and its derivative are closely related to the master space, leading to the property that the specular duals have the same functions as coefficients in their expansions, hinting the emergence of a free theory in the tropical limit. Moreover, they indicate the existence of phase transition. We also find that the Mahler measure should be invariant under Seiberg duality.

Reflexions on Mahler: Dessins, Modularity and Gauge Theories

We provide a unified framework of Mahler measure, dessins d'enfants, and gauge theory. With certain physically motivated Newton polynomials from reflexive polygons, the Mahler measure and the dessin are in one-to-one correspondence. From the Mahler measure, one can construct a Hauptmodul for a congruence subgroup of the modular group, which contains the subgroup associated to the dessin. We also discuss their connections to the quantum periods of del Pezzo surfaces, as well as certain elliptic pencils. In brane tilings and quiver gauge theories, the modular Mahler flow might shed light on the inequivalence amongst the three different complex structures $\tau_{R,G,B}$. We also study how, in F-theory, 7-branes and their monodromies arise in the context of dessins.

Unitary matrix models and random partitions: Universality and multi-criticality

The generating functions for the gauge theory observables are often represented in terms of the unitary matrix integrals. In this work, the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of the generic multi-critical unitary matrix models are studied by adopting the integrable operator formalism, and the multi-critical generalization of the Tracy--Widom distribution in the context of random partitions. We obtain the universal results for the multi-critical model in the weak and strong coupling phases. The free energy of the instanton sector in the weak coupling regime, and the genus expansion of the free energy in the strong coupling regime are explicitly computed and the universal multi-critical phase structure of the model is explored. Finally, we apply our results in concrete examples of supersymmetric indices of gauge theories in the large $N$ limit.

Universal edge scaling in random partitions

We establish the universal edge scaling limit of random partitions with the infinite-parameter distribution called the Schur measure. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the wave function, which is a building block of the corresponding kernel, based on the Schr{ö}dinger-type differential equation. We show that the wave function is in general asymptotic to the Airy function and its higher-order analogs in the edge scaling limit. We construct the corresponding higher-order Airy kernel and the Tracy-Widom distribution from the wave function in the scalins limit, and discuss its implication to the multicritical phase transition in the large size matrix model. We also discuss the limit shape of random partitions through the semi-classical analysis of the wave function.

Quiver Asymptotics and Amoeba: Instantons on Toric Divisors of Calabi-Yau Threefolds

The BPS bound states of D4-D2-D0 branes on the non-compact divisors of Calabi-Yau threefolds and the instantons in the dual quiver gauge theories are previously studied using two-dimensional crystal melting model and dimer model. Using the tropical geometry associated with the toric quiver, we study the asymptotic of the quiver gauge theory to compute some of their thermodynamic observables and extract the phase structure. We obtain that the thermodynamic observables such as free energy, entropy and growth rate are explicitly obtained from the limit shape of the crystal model, the boundary of the Amoeba and its Harnack curve characterization. Furthermore, we observe that there is a Hagedorn phase transition in the instanton sector inferred from the Gumbel distribution of the fluctuations in the crystal model. We present explicit computations of the results in some concrete examples of $\mathbb{C}^3$, conifold, local $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ and local $\mathbb{P}^2$ quivers.

Thermodynamics of Isoradial Quivers and Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds

The BPS sector of $\mathcal{N}=2$, $4d$ toric quiver gauge theories, and its corresponding D6-D2-D0 branes on Calabi-Yau threefolds, have been previously studied using integrable lattice models such as the crystal melting model and the dimer model. The asymptotics of the BPS sector, in the large N limit, can be studied using the Mahler measure theory, \cite{Zah}. In this work, we consider the class of isoradial quivers and study their thermodynamical observables and phase structure. Building on our previous results, and using the relation between the Mahler measure and hyperbolic 3-manifolds, we propose a new approach in the asymptotic analysis of the isoradial quivers. As a result, we obtain the observables such as the BPS free energy, the BPS entropy density and growth rate of the isoradial quivers, as a function of the $R$-charges of the quiver and in terms of the hyperbolic volumes and the dilogarithm functions. The phase structure of the isoradial quivers is studied via the analysis of the BPS entropy density at critical $R$-charges and universal results for the phase structure in this class are obtained. Explicit results for the observables are obtained in some concrete examples of the isoradial quivers.

Quiver Asymptotics: $\mathcal{N}=1$ Free Chiral Ring

The large N generating functions for the counting of chiral operators in $\mathcal{N}=1$, four-dimensional quiver gauge theories have previously been obtained in terms of the weighted adjacency matrix of the quiver diagram. We introduce the methods of multi-variate asymptotic analysis to study this counting in the limit of large charges. We describe a Hagedorn phase transition associated with this asymptotics, which refines and generalizes known results on the 2-matrix harmonic oscillator. Explicit results are obtained for two infinite classes of quiver theories, namely the generalized clover quivers and affine $\mathbb{C}^3/\hat{A}_n$ orbifold quivers.

Toric Quiver Asymptotics and Mahler Measure: $\mathcal{N}=2$ BPS States

BPS sector in $\mathcal{N}=2$, four-dimensional toric quiver gauge theories has previously been studied using crystal melting model and dimer model. We introduce the Mahler measure associated to statistical dimer model to study large $N$ limit of these quiver gauge theories. In this limit, generating function of BPS states in a general toric quiver theory is studied and entropy, growth rate of BPS states and free energy of the quiver are obtained in terms of the Mahler measure. Moreover, a possible third-order phase transition in toric quivers is discussed. Explicit computations of profile function, entropy density, BPS growth rate and phase structure of quivers are presented in concrete examples of clover $\mathbb{C}^3$, and resolved conifold $\mathcal{C}$ quivers. Finally, BPS growth rates of Hirzebruch $\mathbb{F}_0$, and $\mathbb{C}^3/ \mathbb{Z}^2\times \mathbb{Z}^2$ orbifold quivers are obtained and a possible interpretation of the results for certain BPS black holes is discussed.

Phase Structure of XX0 Spin Chain and Nonintersecting Brownian Motion

We study finite size and temperature XX0 Heisenberg spin chain in weak and strong coupling regimes. By using an elegant connection of the model to integrable combinatorics and probability, we explore and interpret a possible phase structure of the model in asymptotic limit: the limit of large inverse temperature and size. First, partition function and free energy of the model are derived by using techniques and results from random matrix models and nonintersecting Brownian motion. We show that, in the asymptotic limit, partition function of the model, written in terms of matrix integral, is governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution. Second, the exact analytic results for the free energy, which is obtained by the asymptotic analysis of the Tracy-Widom distribution, indicate a completely new and sophisticated phase structure of the model. This phase structure consists of second- and third-order phase transitions. Finally, to shed light on our new results, we provide a possible interpretation of the phase structure in terms of dynamical behavior of magnons in the spin chain. We demonstrate distinct features of the phases with schematic spin configurations which have definite features in each region of the phase diagram.

New Phase Transitions in Chern-Simons Matter Theory

Applying the machinery of random matrix theory and Toeplitz determinants we study the level $k$, $U(N)$ Chern-Simons theory coupled with fundamental matter on $S^2\times S^1$ at finite temperature $T$. This theory admits a discrete matrix integral representation, i.e. a unitary discrete matrix model of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. In this study, the effective partition function and phase structure of the Chern-Simons matter theory, in a special case with an effective potential namely the Gross-Witten-Wadia potential, are investigated. We obtain an exact expression for the partition function of the Chern-Simons matter theory as a function of $k,N,T,$ for finite values and in the asymptotic regime. In the Gross-Witten-Wadia case, we show that ratio of the Chern-Simons matter partition function and the continuous two-dimensional Yang-Mills partition function, in the asymptotic regime, is the Tracy-Widom distribution. Consequently, using the explicit results for free energy of the theory, new second-order and third-order phase transitions are observed. Depending on the phase, in the asymptotic regime, Chern-Simons matter theory is represented either by a continuous or discrete two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, separated by a third-order domain wall.

Conformal Field Theory, Vertex Operator Algebra and Stochastic Loewner Evolution in Ising Model

We review the algebraic and analytic aspects of the conformal field theory (CFT) and its relation to the stochastic Loewner evolution (SLE) in an example of the Ising model. We obtain the scaling limit of the correlation functions of Ising free fermions on an arbitrary simply connected two-dimensional domain $D$. Then, we study the analytic and algebraic aspects of the fermionic CFT on $D$, using the Fock space formalism of fields, and the Clifford vertex operator algebra (VOA). These constructions lead to the conformal field theory of the Fock space fields and the fermionic Fock space of states and their relations in case of the Ising free fermions. Furthermore, we investigate the conformal structure of the fermionic Fock space fields and the Clifford VOA, namely the operator product expansions, correlation functions and differential equations. Finally, by using the Clifford VOA and the fermionic CFT, we investigate a rigorous realization of the CFT/SLE correspondence in the Ising model. First, by studying the relation between the operator formalism in the Clifford VOA and the SLE martingale generators, we find an explicit Fock space for the SLE martingale generators. Second, we obtain a subset of the SLE martingale observables in terms of the correlation functions of fermionic Fock space fields which are constructed from the Clifford VOA.

Discrete holomorphicity and Ising model operator formalism

We explore the connection between the transfer matrix formalism and discrete complex analysis approach to the two dimensional Ising model. We construct a discrete analytic continuation matrix, analyze its spectrum and establish a direct connection with the critical Ising transfer matrix. We show that the lattice fermion operators of the transfer matrix formalism satisfy, as operators, discrete holomorphicity, and we show that their correlation functions are Ising parafermionic observables. We extend these correspondences also to outside the critical point. We show that critical Ising correlations can be computed with operators on discrete Cauchy data spaces, which encode the geometry and operator insertions in a manner analogous to the quantum states in the transfer matrix formalism.

Shear viscosity of a highly excited string and the black hole membrane paradigm

Black hole membrane paradigm states that a certain viscous membrane seems to be sitting on a stretched horizon of a black hole from the viewpoint of a distant observer. We show that the shear viscosity of the fictitious membrane can be reproduced by a highly excited string covering the stretched horizon except for a numerical coefficient.

On Finite Noncommutativity in Quantum Field Theory

We consider various modifications of the Weyl-Moyal star-product, in order to obtain a finite range of nonlocality. The basic requirements are to preserve the commutation relations of the coordinates as well as the associativity of the new product. We show that a modification of the differential representation of the Weyl-Moyal star-product by an exponential function of derivatives will not lead to a finite range of nonlocality. We also modify the integral kernel of the star-product introducing a Gaussian damping, but find a nonassociative product which remains infinitely nonlocal. We are therefore led to propose that the Weyl-Moyal product should be modified by a cutoff like function, in order to remove the infinite nonlocality of the product. We provide such a product, but it appears that one has to abandon the possibility of analytic calculation with the new product.
