Deformation of sine-Gordon two-soliton solutions in $φ^4$ kink-antikink configurations

In this work, we construct analytical kink-antikink $(K\bar{K})$ configurations in the non-integrable $φ^4$ model by mapping exact solutions of the integrable sine-Gordon system via a field deformation. This procedure yields two distinct classes of configurations, parametrized by the initial half-separation and velocity. We compare these profiles with the standard additive superposition Ansatz in terms of vacuum structure and equation-of-motion residuals, deriving explicit closed-form expressions for the corresponding integrated squared residuals. For small separations, the mapped soliton-antisoliton configurations exhibit appreciably smaller residuals than the naive superposition Ansatz, which in turn performs better than the mapped two-soliton configurations. Although the mapped fields are not exact solutions of the $φ^4$ equation of motion, they provide mathematically consistent, topologically sound, and physically motivated initial data for numerical studies of kink-antikink scattering and resonance phenomena.

A resonance in phonons scattering off a kink in the absence of a Peierls-Nabarro potential

We investigate the interaction of small-amplitude waves called phonons, with an initially static kink in an exceptional discretization of the $ϕ^4$ model that is free of the Peierls-Nabarro potential. Phonons are generated by a localized harmonic source and scattered from one side of the kink. By computing the transmission and reflection coefficients over the entire phonon band, we demonstrate that the scattering properties depend strongly on the lattice spacing. In the weak-discreteness regime ($h<1$), the kink is nearly transparent and phonons are transmitted through it over most of the phonon spectrum. In contrast, for strong discreteness ($h>1$), significant reflection emerges even though the corresponding continuum $ϕ^4$ kink is reflectionless. We further show that depending on the frequency of the incoming phonons, the kink experiences negative radiation pressure and is accelerated toward the incoming phonons for all lattice spacings considered, and this effect is much stronger for the strong discretness. The frequency dependence of the kink velocity and energy transfer is explained in terms of resonances associated with Doppler-shifted phonon frequencies and extrema of the phonon group velocity. Our results reveal that strong lattice discreteness can qualitatively modify phonon-kink interactions even in systems where the static Peierls-Nabarro potential is absent.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Kink Configurations: From Small to Large Kink Collisions

This study explores the scattering dynamics of kinks within a nonlinear system governed by a parameterized potential $U_λ(χ)$, examining the distinct behaviors of small and large kinks across a range of $λ$ values and initial velocities. For small kinks, we investigate the critical velocity for separation, the influence of vibrational modes, resonance phenomena, and the conditions under which large kinks emerge from collisions. Our findings reveal that the critical velocity exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on the parameter $λ$, reflecting the evolving stability of small kinks, while the decreasing frequency of vibrational modes with increasing $λ$ diminishes resonance effects, leading to simpler scattering dynamics at higher $λ$. The formation of large kinks from small kink collisions is favored at lower $λ$, where the mass difference between small and large kinks is reduced. Conversely, large kink scattering consistently results in the production of small kinks, with the number of small kink pairs growing as both $λ$ and initial velocity increase, a process driven by energy transfer from the translational modes of large kinks to the potential energy required for small kink creation. The absence of vibrational modes in large kinks contrasts with their presence in small kinks, where such modes give rise to complex phenomena like bion formation and resonance. These results underscore the pivotal role of $λ$ in shaping kink interactions and offer valuable insights into the dynamics of topological defects in nonlinear systems, with potential implications for understanding similar phenomena in condensed matter physics and related fields.

Kink dynamics in a high-order field model

We study various properties of topological solitons (kinks) of a field-theoretic model with a polynomial potential of the twelfth degree. This model is remarkable in that it has several topological sectors, in which kinks have different masses. We obtain asymptotic estimates for the kink-antikink and antikink-kink interaction forces. We also study numerically kink-antikink and antikink-kink collisions and observe a number of interesting phenomena: annihilation of a kink-antikink pair in one topological sector and the production in its place of a pair in another sector; resonance phenomena -- escape windows, despite the absence of vibrational modes in the kink excitation spectra.

Kinks scattering in deformed $φ^6$ model

The deformed model $\tildeφ^{(6)}$ is introduced based on the $φ^4$ model using a deformation functional $F[φ]$ including a free parameter $a$. The kink solutions in different sectors and their internal modes are obtained as functions of the deformation parameter and their characteristics are evaluated as well. It is shown that the kinks of the deformed model inherit some of their dynamical properties (like internal modes) from the standard $φ^4$ potential and some of their characteristics from the $φ^6$ model. The dynamics of kink-antikink (antikink-kink) scattering is investigated in different sectors with various kink initial conditions as well as different values of deformation parameter. According to the kinks' initial velocity, colliding kinks may be bound together or scatter from each other after the interaction. These two situations are distinguished by the critical velocity, which itself depends on the deformation parameter of the model. Due to the difference in the rest mass of kink solutions related to different sectors, interesting and sometimes rare phenomena are observed during the kink scattering and their interactions.

Connections between kinks with different asymptotics

In this letter, we show how to build bridges between field-theoretic models that have kink solutions with different asymptotic behavior. We study transformational properties of kinks in models with a real scalar field in two-dimensional space-time. We show how to obtain new models with solitons having different asymptotic behavior, using deformations with specific functions. In particular, starting from the well-known $φ^4$ model, we obtain kinks with super-exponential, super-super-exponential, power-law, and logarithmic asymptotics. We also comment on how asymptotic behavior of stability potential and zero mode can be obtained for deformed kinks.

Scattering of kinks in scalar-field models with higher-order self-interactions

Higher-order scalar field models in two dimensions, including the $ϕ^8$ model, have been researched. It has been shown that for some special cases of the minima positions of the potential, the explicit kink solutions can be found. However, in physical applications, it is very important to know all the explicit solutions of a model for any minima position. In the present study, with the help of some deformation functions, we have shown that higher-order scalar field theories can be obtained with explicit kinks. In particular, we introduced two deformation functions that, when applied to the well known $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models, produce modified $ϕ^8$ and $ϕ^{10}$ models, respectively, with all their explicit kink-like solutions which depend on a single parameter. Since this parameter controls the position of the minima of the potential, we have found interesting new solutions in many distinct cases. We have also studied the kink mass, the behavior of the excitation spectra and several kink-antikink collisions for these two new modified models. The collision outcome is determined by the initial configuration, specifically the sequence in which the kink-antikink and antikink-kink pairings emerge. Another interesting finding is the suppression of resonance windows, which may be explained by the presence of a set of internal modes in the model.

Phonons scattering off discrete asymmetric solitons in the absence of a Peierls-Nabarro potential

We analyze the interaction of lattice vibrations (phonon wave-packets) with an asymmetric kink soliton initially at rest. We employ the $ϕ^6$ model in one space and one time dimensions for various lattice spacings and consider two different discretization prescriptions for the field potential that do not generate Peierls-Nabarro potentials, i.e. the kink can be placed anywhere along the lattice beyond discrete translational invariance. Since the $ϕ^6$ model kink is neither symmetric nor anti-symmetric under spatial reflections we simulate the cases where the wave-packet approaches the kink from negative or positive spatial infinity. We extract the energy transmission and reflection coefficients as functions of the central frequency of the phonon wave-packet for the different lattice spacings. For large lattice spacings the wave-packet is always fully reflected while for smaller spacing the amount of reflection and transmission depends on the central frequency. We also identify scenarios in which the target kink acquires a non-zero velocity from its interaction with the wave-packet.

Collisions of kinks in deformed $φ^4$ and $φ^6$ models

Two hyperbolic-deformed field theoretic models are discussed. In both of them, due to the effect of specific deformation function on the well known $φ^4$ and $φ^6$ models, their internal structure may change significantly. Unlike the $φ^4$ kinks solutions, which has only one internal mode in addition to its translational mode, the kinks of the hyperbolic-deformed $φ^4$ model can have several internal modes. Moreover, the deformation on the $φ^6$ model has other interesting features, because the kinks of the $φ^6$ model have only a zero mode and the deformation may cause the appearance of internal mode for both kink and antikink. The presence of the new internal modes modify the collisions which we explore in the present work. The deformation relies on a real parameter, which controls the number of internal modes, and we also study how the deformation parameter alter the mass of the kinks and the critical velocities involved in the collisions.

Scattering of the asymmetric $ϕ^6$ kinks from a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation: Creation of multiple pairs of kink-antikink from phonons

Interaction of asymmetric $ϕ^6$ kinks with a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation is investigated numerically. It has been shown that when the kink (antikink) hits the defect from the gain side, a final velocity of the kink decreases (increases), while for the kink and antikink coming from the opposite direction their final velocities remain unchanged. It is also found that when the kink interacts with the defect from the gain side multiple pair of the kink-antikink are formed from small amplitude waves (phonons) in the final states depending on the initial velocity of the initial kink and parameter of the perturbation.

Exotic Final States in the $φ^8$ Multi-Kink Collisions

We study final states in the scattering of kinks and antikinks of the $φ^8$ field-theoretic model. We use the initial conditions in the form of two, three or four static or moving kinks. In the numerical experiments we observe a number of different processes such as emergence of static and moving oscillons, change of the kink's topological sector, scattering of an oscillon by a kink, production of kink-antikink pairs in oscillon-oscillon collisions. In antikink-kink collisions for asymmetric kinks, we found resonance phenomena -- escape windows.

From thin to thick domain walls: An example of the $φ^8$ model

We demonstrate that for some certain values of parameters of the $(1+1)$-dimensional $φ^8$ model, the kink solutions can be found from polynomial equations. For some selected values of the parameters we give the explicit formulas for the kinks in all topological sectors of the model. Based on the obtained algebraic equations, we show that in a special limiting case, kinks with power-law asymptotics arise in the model, describing, in particular, thick domain walls. Objects of this kind could be of interest for modern cosmology.

Asymmetric kink solutions of hyperbolically deformed model

We study some properties of kink solutions of the model with non-polynomial potential obtained by deforming the well-known $φ^6$ field model. We consider the excitation spectrum of the kink. We also discuss the properties of the `kink+antikink' system as a whole that are not inherent to a solitary kink or antikink.

Collision of $ϕ^4$ kinks free of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier in the regime of strong discreteness

The two major effects observed in collisions of the continuum $ϕ^4$ kinks are (i) the existence of critical collision velocity above which the kinks always emerge from the collision and (ii) the existence of the escape windows for multi-bounce collisions with the velocity below the critical one, associated with the energy exchange between the kink's internal and translational modes. The potential merger (for sufficiently low collision speeds) of the kink and antikink produces a bion with oscillation frequency $ω_B$, which constantly radiates energy, since its higher harmonics are always within the phonon spectrum. Similar effects have been observed in the discrete $ϕ^4$ kink-antikink collisions for relatively weak discreteness. Here we analyze kinks colliding with their mirror image antikinks in the regime of strong discreteness considering an exceptional discretization of the $ϕ^4$ field equation where the static Peierls-Nabarro potential is precisely zero and the not-too-fast kinks can propagate practically radiating no energy. Several new effects are observed in this case, originating from the fact that the phonon band width is small for strongly discrete lattices and for even higher discreteness an inversion of the phonon spectrum takes place with the short waves becoming low-frequency waves. When the phonon band is narrow, not a bion but a discrete breather with frequency $ω_{DB}$ and all higher harmonics outside the phonon band is formed. When the phonon spectrum is inverted, the kink and antikink become mutually repulsive solitary waves with oscillatory tails, and their collision is possible only for velocities above a threshold value sufficient to overcome their repulsion.

Explicit kinks in higher-order field theories

We study an example of higher-order field-theoretic model with an eighth-degree polynomial potential -- the $φ^8$ model. We show that for some certain ratios of constants of the potential, the problem of finding kink-type solutions in $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time reduces to solving algebraic equations. For two different ratios of the constants, which determine positions of the vacua, we obtained explicit formulas for kinks in all topological sectors. The properties of the obtained kinks are also studied -- their masses are calculated, and the excitation spectra which could be responsible for the appearance of resonance phenomena in kink-antikink scattering are found.

Multi-kink scattering in the double sine-Gordon model

We study collisions of two, three, and four kinks of the double sine-Gordon model. The initial conditions are taken in a special form in order to provide collision of all kinks in one point. We obtain dependences of the maximal energy densities on the model parameter. We also analyze the final states observed in these collisions.

A new look at the double sine-Gordon kink-antikink scattering

We study the kink-antikink scattering within the double sine-Gordon model. In the numerical simulations we found a critical value $v_{cr}$ of the initial velocity $v_{in}$, which separates two different scenarios: at $v_{in} v_{cr}$ the kinks pass through each other and escape to infinities. We obtain non-monotonous dependence of $v_{cr}$ on the model parameter $R$. Besides that, at some initial velocities below $v_{cr}$ we observe formation and interaction of the so-called oscillons (new phenomenon), as well as escape windows (well-known phenomenon).

Scattering of the double sine-Gordon kinks

We study the scattering of kink and antikink of the double sine-Gordon model. There is a critical value of the initial velocity $v_{cr}$ of the colliding kinks, which separates different regimes of the collision. At $v_{in}>v_{cr}$ we observe kinks reflection, while at $v_{in}<v_{cr}$ their interaction is complicated with capture and escape windows. We obtain the dependence of $v_{cr}$ on the parameter of the model. This dependence possesses a series of local maxima, which has not been reported by other authors. At some initial velocities below the critical value we observe a new phenomenon -- the escape of two oscillons in the final state. Besides that, at $v_{in}<v_{cr}$ we found the initial kinks' velocities at which the oscillons do not escape, and the final configuration looks like a bound state of two oscillons.
