Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of sub-Gaussian matrices

We establish large deviations estimates for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices with sub-Gaussian entries. Under technical assumptions, we show that the large deviation behavior of the largest eigenvalue is universal for small deviations, in the sense that the speed and the rate function are the same as in the case of the GOE. In contrast, in the regime of very large deviations, we obtain a non-universal rate function and we prove that the associated eigenvector is localized given the large deviation event, thus establishing the existence of a transition between two different large deviation mechanisms.

Low-rank Matrix Estimation with Inhomogeneous Noise

We study low-rank matrix estimation for a generic inhomogeneous output channel through which the matrix is observed. This generalizes the commonly considered spiked matrix model with homogeneous noise to include for instance the dense degree-corrected stochastic block model. We adapt techniques used to study multispecies spin glasses to derive and rigorously prove an expression for the free energy of the problem in the large size limit, providing a framework to study the signal detection thresholds. We discuss an application of this framework to the degree corrected stochastic block models.

Bernoulli Random Matrices

Random Matrix theory has become a field on its own with a breadth of new results, techniques, and ideas in the last thirty years. In these proceedings of the 8ECM 2021, I illustrate some of these advances by describing what is known about the spectrum and the eigenvectors of Bernoulli matrices.

Large Deviations Asymptotics of Rectangular Spherical Integral

In this article we study the Dyson Bessel process, which describes the evolution of singular values of rectangular matrix Brownian motions, and prove a large deviation principle for its empirical particle density. We then use it to obtain the asymptotics of the so-called rectangular spherical integrals as $m,n$ go to infinity while $m/n$ converges.

Asymptotics of k dimensional spherical integrals and applications

In this article, we prove that k-dimensional spherical integrals are asymptotically equivalent to the product of 1-dimensional spherical integrals. This allows us to generalize several large deviations principles in random matrix theory known before only in a one-dimensional case. As examples, we study the universality of the large deviations for k extreme eigenvalues of Wigner matrices (resp. Wishart matrices, resp. matrices with general variance profiles) with sharp sub-Gaussian entries, as well as large deviations principles for extreme eigenvalues of Gaussian Wigner and Wishart matrices with a finite dimensional perturbation.

Spectrum and pseudospectrum for quadratic polynomials in Ginibre matrices

For a fixed quadratic polynomial $\mathfrak{p}$ in $n$ non-commuting variables, and $n$ independent $N\times N$ complex Ginibre matrices $X_1^N,\dots, X_n^N$, we establish the convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of $P^N =\mathfrak{p}(X_1^N,\dots, X_n^N)$ to the Brown measure of $\mathfrak{p}$ evaluated at $n$ freely independent circular elements $c_1,\dots, c_n$ in a non-commutative probability space. The main step of the proof is to obtain quantitative control on the pseudospectrum of $P^N$. Via the well-known linearization trick this hinges on anti-concentration properties for certain matrix-valued random walks, which we find can fail for structural reasons of a different nature from the arithmetic obstructions that were illuminated in works on the Littlewood--Offord problem for discrete scalar random walks.

On the operator norm of non-commutative polynomials in deterministic matrices and iid GUE matrices

Let $X^N = (X_1^N,\dots, X^N_d)$ be a d-tuple of $N\times N$ independent GUE random matrices and $Z^{NM}$ be any family of deterministic matrices in $\mathbb{M}_N(\mathbb{C})\otimes \mathbb{M}_M(\mathbb{C})$. Let $P$ be a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial. A seminal work of Voiculescu shows that the empirical measure of the eigenvalues of $P(X^N)$ converges towards a deterministic measure defined thanks to free probability theory. Let now $f$ be a smooth function, the main technical result of this paper is a precise bound of the difference between the expectation of $$\frac{1}{MN}\text{Tr}\left( f(P(X^N\otimes I_M,Z^{NM})) \right)$$ and its limit when $N$ goes to infinity. If $f$ is six times differentiable, we show that it is bounded by $M^2\left\Vert f\right\Vert_{\mathcal{C}^6}N^{-2}$. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of a result of Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen, later developed by Male, which gives sufficient conditions for the operator norm of a polynomial evaluated in $(X^N,Z^{NM},{Z^{NM}}^*)$ to converge almost surely towards its free limit. Restricting ourselves to polynomials in independent GUE matrices, we give concentration estimates on the largest eingenvalue of these polynomials around their free limit. A direct consequence of these inequalities is that there exists some $β>0$ such that for any $\varepsilon_1<3+β)^{-1}$ and $\varepsilon_2<1/4$, almost surely for $N$ large enough, $$-\frac{1}{N^{\varepsilon_1}}\ \leq \| P(X^N)\| - \left\Vert P(x)\right\Vert \leq\ \frac{1}{N^{\varepsilon_2}}.$$ Finally if $X^N$ and $Y^{M_N}$ are independent and $M_N = o(N^{1/3})$, then almost surely, the norm of any polynomial in $(X^N\otimes I_{M_N},I_N\otimes Y^{M_N})$ converges almost surely towards its free limit. This result is an improvement of a Theorem of Pisier, who was himself using estimates from Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen, where $M_N$ had size $o(N^{1/4})$.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalues and eigenvectors of spiked random matrices

We consider matrices formed by a random $N\times N$ matrix drawn from the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (or Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) plus a rank-one perturbation of strength $θ$, and focus on the largest eigenvalue, $x$, and the component, $u$, of the corresponding eigenvector in the direction associated to the rank-one perturbation. We obtain the large deviation principle governing the atypical joint fluctuations of $x$ and $u$. Interestingly, for $θ>1$, in large deviations characterized by a small value of $u$, i.e. $u<1-1/θ$, the second-largest eigenvalue pops out from the Wigner semi-circle and the associated eigenvector orients in the direction corresponding to the rank-one perturbation. We generalize these results to the Wishart Ensemble, and we extend them to the first $n$ eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of the sum of two random matrices

In this paper, we consider the addition of two matrices in generic position, namely A + U BU * , where U is drawn under the Haar measure on the unitary or the orthogonal group. We show that, under mild conditions on the empirical spectral measures of the deterministic matrices A and B, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle, in the scale N, with an explicit rate function involving the limit of spherical integrals. We cover in particular all the cases when A and B have no outliers.

Large deviations for the largest eigenvalue of Rademacher matrices

In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This is satisfied by the Rademacher law and the uniform law on [sqrt{3}, sqrt{3}]. We extend our result to complex entries Wigner matrices and Wishart matrices.

Rigidity and Edge Universality of Discrete $β$-Ensembles

We study discrete $β$-ensembles as introduced in [17]. We obtain rigidity estimates on the particle locations, i.e. with high probability, the particles are close to their classical locations with an optimal error estimate. We prove the edge universality of the discrete $β$-ensembles, i.e. for $β\geq 1$, the distribution of extreme particles converges to the Tracy-Widom $β$ distribution. As far as we know, this is the first proof of general Tracy-Widom $β$ distributions in the discrete setting. A special case of our main results implies that under the Jack deformation of the Plancherel measure, the distribution of the lengths of the first few rows in Young diagrams, converges to the Tracy-Widom $β$ distribution, which answers an open problem in [39]. Our proof relies on Nekrasov's (or loop) equations, a multiscale analysis and a comparison argument with continuous $β$-ensembles.

Gaussian asymptotics of discrete $β$-ensembles

We introduce and study stochastic $N$-particle ensembles which are discretizations for general-$β$ log-gases of random matrix theory. The examples include random tilings, families of non-intersecting paths, $(z,w)$-measures, etc. We prove that under technical assumptions on general analytic potential, the global fluctuations for such ensembles are asymptotically Gaussian as $N\to\infty$. The covariance is universal and coincides with its counterpart in random matrix theory. Our main tool is an appropriate discrete version of the Schwinger-Dyson (or loop) equations, which originates in the work of Nekrasov and his collaborators.

Delocalization at small energy for heavy-tailed random matrices

We prove that the eigenvectors associated to small enough eigenvalues of an heavy-tailed symmetric random matrix are delocalized with probability tending to one as the size of the matrix grows to infinity. The delocalization is measured thanks to a simple criterion related to the inverse participation ratio which computes an average ratio of L4 and L2-norms of vectors. In contrast, as a consequence of a previous result, for random matrices with sufficiently heavy tails, the eigenvectors associated to large enough eigenvalues are localized according to the same criterion. The proof is based on a new analysis of the fixed point equation satisfied asymptotically by the law of a diagonal entry of the resolvent of this matrix.

Universality in several-matrix models via approximate transport maps

We construct approximate transport maps for perturbative several-matrix models. As a consequence, we deduce that local statistics have the same asymptotic as in the case of independent GUE or GOE matrices, i.e., they are given by the Sine-kernel in the bulk and the Tracy-Widom distribution at the edge. Moreover, we prove universality for the local statistics of eigenvalues of self-adjoint polynomials in several independent GUE or GOE matrices which are close to the identity.

Transport maps for Beta-matrix models and Universality

We construct approximate transport maps for non-critical Beta-matrix models, that is, maps so that the push forward of a non-critical Beta-matrix model with a given potential is a non-critical Beta-matrix model with another potential, up to a small error in the total variation distance. As a consequence, we deduce that local statistics have the same asymptotic behavior for both models.

Central limit theorem for eigenvectors of heavy tailed matrices

We consider the eigenvectors of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, such as matrices with entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws, or adjacencymatrices of Erdos-Renyi graphs. We denote by $U=[u_{ij}]$ the eigenvectors matrix (corresponding to increasing eigenvalues) and prove that the bivariate process $$B^n_{s,t}:=n^{-1/2}\sum_{1\le i\le ns, 1\le j\le nt}(|u_{ij}|^2 -n^{-1}),$$ indexed by $s,t\in [0,1]$, converges in law to a non trivial Gaussian process. An interesting part of this result is the $n^{-1/2}$ rescaling, proving that from this point of view, the eigenvectors matrix $U$ behaves more like a permutation matrix (as it was proved by Chapuy that for $U$ a permutation matrix, $n^{-1/2}$ is the right scaling) than like a Haar-distributed orthogonal or unitary matrix (as it was proved by Rouault and Donati-Martin that for $U$ such a matrix, the right scaling is $1$).

Central limit theorem and convergence of the support for Wishart matrices with correlated entries

In this article, we will consider Wishart Matrices with correlated entries, but with a strictly log-concave law. It has been shown by A.Pajor and L.Pastur that the empirical measures of such matrices converges. We will show, under some symmetry and convergence hypotheses, that in this case the central limit theorem for linear statistics holds around their limit, and deduce the convergence of the support to the support of the limiting measure. We also provide the convergence of the Expectation and the Covariance.
