Constraining pulsar gap models with the light-curve and flux properties of the gamma-ray pulsar population

We compare population synthesis results for inner and outer magnetosphere emission models with the various characteristics measured in the first LAT pulsar catalogue for both the radio-loud and radio-weak or radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars. We show that all models fail to reproduce the observations: for each model there is a lack of luminous and energetic objects that suggest a non dipolar magnetic field structure or spin-down evolution. The large dispersion that we find in the simulated gamma-ray luminosity versus spin-down power relation does not allow to use the present trend seen in the Fermi data to distinguish among models. For each model and each Fermi detected pulsar, we have generated light curves as a function of obliquity and inclination angles. The theoretical curves were fitted to the observed one, using a maximum-likelihood approach, to derive the best-fit orientations and to compare how well each model can reproduce the data. Including the radio light-curve gives an additional key constraint to restrict the orientation space

Constraining pulsar gap models with light-curve shapes of a simulated gamma-ray pulsar population

The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has discovered many gamma-ray pulsars, both as radio-loud objects and radio-quiet or radio-weak pulsars that have been identified through blind period searches. The latter presumably have gamma-ray beams originating from high altitudes in the magnetosphere, resulting in little or no overlap with the radio beam. The exponential cut-off of the emission at high energy also points to a medium- or high-altitude origin of the gamma rays. Population synthesis offers means to study two complementary aspects of the gamma-ray pulsar population: energetics and light curve morphology. The latter (peak multiplicity, position, separation, asymmetries, ...) can be used to constrain the beam(s) geometry (their origin within the open magnetosphere, evolution of the radiating region with pulsar power and age, ...). It can also be used to constrain the obliquity and orientation of a pulsar in the framework of a given accelerator model. We present preliminary results from new simulations and light-curve analysis that indicate that the sample of Fermi pulsars retains much of the geometrical information of the parent gamma-ray pulsar population.

Pulsar Slot Gaps and Unidentified EGRET Sources

A new picture of pulsar high-energy emission is proposed that is different from both the traditional polar cap and outer gap models, but combines elements of each. The slot gap model is based on electron acceleration along the edge of the open field region from the neutron star surface to near the light cylinder. Along the last open field line, the pair formation front rises to very high altitude forming a slot gap, where the accelerating electric field is unscreened by pairs. The resulting radiation features both hollow cones from the lower-altitude pair cascades, seen at small viewing angles, as well as caustic emission on the trailing-edge field lines at high altitude, seen from both poles at large viewing angle. The combination of the small solid angle of slot gap emission (<< 1 sr) with a high probability of viewing the emission predicts that more gamma-ray pulsars could be detected at larger distances. In this picture, many of the positional coincidences of radio pulsars with unidentified EGRET sources become plausible as real associations, as the flux predicted by the slot gap model for many of the pulsars would provide the observed EGRET source flux. The expected probability of seeing radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars in this model will also be discussed.
