Genuine phase diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the microcanonical ensemble: A classical field study

Within the classical field model, we find that the phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate undergoes a true diffusive motion in the microcanonical ensemble, the variance of the condensate phase change between time zero and time $t$ growing linearly in $t$. The phase diffusion coefficient obeys a simple scaling law in the double thermodynamic and Bogoliubov limit. We construct an approximate calculation of the diffusion coefficient, in fair agreement with the numerical results over the considered temperature range, and we extend this approximate calculation to the quantum field.

Non-diffusive phase spreading of a Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature

We show that the phase of a condensate in a finite temperature gas spreads linearly in time at long times rather than in a diffusive way. This result is supported by classical field simulations, and analytical calculations which are generalized to the quantum case under the assumption of quantum ergodicity in the system. This super-diffusive behavior is intimately related to conservation of energy during the free evolution of the system and to fluctuations of energy in the prepared initial state.

Quantum correlations of two optical fields close to electromagnetically induced transparency

We show that three-level atoms excited by two cavity modes in a $Λ$ configuration close to electromagnetically induced transparency can produce strongly squeezed bright beams or correlated beams which can be used for quantum non demolition measurements. The input intensity is the experimental "knob" for tuning the system into a squeezer or a quantum non demolition device. The quantum correlations become ideal at a critical point characterized by the appearance of a switching behavior in the mean fields intensities. Our predictions, based on a realistic fully quantum 3-level model including cavity losses and spontaneous emission, allow direct comparison with future experiments.

Squeezing and entangling nuclear spins in helium 3

We present a realistic model for transferring the squeezing or the entanglement of optical field modes to the collective ground state nuclear spin of $^3$He using metastability exchange collisions. We discuss in detail the requirements for obtaining good quantum state transfer efficiency and study the possibility to readout the nuclear spin state optically.

Long-lived quantum memory with nuclear atomic spins

We propose to store non-classical states of light into the macroscopic collective nuclear spin ($10^{18}$ atoms) of a $^3$He vapor, using metastability exchange collisions. These collisions, commonly used to transfer orientation from the metastable state $2^{3}S\_1$ to the ground state state of $^3$He, can also transfer quantum correlations. This gives a possible experimental scheme to map a squeezed vacuum field state onto a nuclear spin state with very long storage times (hours).

Metastability Exchange Optical Pumping of Helium-3 at High Pressures and 1.5 T: Comparison of two Optical Pumping Transitions

At low magnetic field, metastability exchange optical pumping of helium-3 is known to provide high nuclear polarizations for pressures around 1 mbar. In a recent paper, we demonstrated that operating at 1.5 T can significantly improve the results of metastability exchange optical pumping at high pressures. Here, we compare the performances of two different optical pumping lines at 1.5 T, and show that either the achieved nuclear polarization or the production rate can be optimized.

High nuclear polarization of helium-3 at low and high pressure by metastability exchange optical pumping at 1.5 Tesla

We perform metastability exchange optical pumping of helium-3 in a strong magnetic field of 1.5 T. The achieved nuclear polarization, from 80% at 1.33 mbar to 25% at 67 mbar, shows a substantial improvement at high pressures with respect to standard low-field optical pumping. The specific mechanisms of metastability exchange optical pumping at high field are investigated, advantages and intrinsic limitations are discussed. From a practical point of view, our results open the way to alternative technological solutions for polarized helium-3 applications and in particular for magnetic resonance imaging of human lungs.

Vortex crystallisation in classical field theory

We show that the formation of a vortex lattice in a weakly interacting Bose condensed gas can be modeled with the nonlinear Schrodinger equation for both T=0 and finite temperatures without the need for an explicit damping term. Applying a weak rotating anisotropic harmonic potential we find numerically that the turbulent dynamics of the field produces an effective dissipation of the vortex motion and leads to the formation of a lattice. For T=0 this turbulent dynamics is triggered by an already known rotational dynamic instability of the condensate. For finite temperatures, noise is present at the start of the simulation and allows the formation of a vortex lattice at a lower rotation frequency, the Landau frequency. These two regimes have different vortex dynamics. We show that the multimode interpretation of the classical field is essential.

A classical field method for time dependent Bose condensed gases

We propose a method to study the time evolution of Bose condensed gases perturbed from an initial thermal equilibrium, based on the Wigner representation of the $N$-body density operator. We show how to generate a collection of random classical fields sampling the initial Wigner distribution in the number conserving Bogoliubov approximation. The fields are then evolved with the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We illustrate the method with the damping of a collective excitation of a one-dimensional Bose gas.

A Monte Carlo Formulation of the Bogolubov Theory

We propose an efficient stochastic method to implement numerically the Bogolubov approach to study finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensates. Our method is based on the Wigner representation of the density matrix describing the non condensed modes and a Brownian motion simulation to sample the Wigner distribution at thermal equilibrium. Allowing to sample any density operator Gaussian in the field variables, our method is very general and it applies both to the Bogolubov and to the Hartree-Fock Bogolubov approach, in the equilibrium case as well as in the time-dependent case. We think that our method can be useful to study trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in two or three spatial dimensions without rotational symmetry properties, as in the case of condensates with vortices, where the traditional Bogolubov approach is difficult to implement numerically due to the need to diagonalize very big matrices.

Binary Mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates: Phase dynamics and Spatial Dynamics

We investigate the relative phase coherence properties and the occurrence of demixing instabilities for two mutually interacting and time evolving Bose-Einstein condensates in traps. Our treatment naturally includes the additional decoherence effect due to fluctuations in the total number of particles. Analytical results are presented for the breathe-together solution, an extension of previously known scaling solution to the case of a binary mixture of condensates. When the three coupling constants describing the elastic interactions among the atoms in the two states are close to each other, a dramatic increase of the phase coherence time is predicted. Numerical results are presented for the parameters of the recent JILA experiments.

Simultaneous Magneto-Optical Trapping of Two Lithium Isotopes

We confine 4 10^8 fermionic 6Li atoms simultaneously with 9 10^9 bosonic 7Li atoms in a magneto-optical trap based on an all-semiconductor laser system. We optimize the two-isotope sample for sympathetic evaporative cooling. This is an essential step towards the production of a quantum-degenerate gas of fermionic lithium atoms.

Phase Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates: Losses versus Revivals

In the absence of losses the phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate undergoes collapses and revivals in time due to elastic atomic interactions. As experiments necessarily involve inelastic collisions, we develop a model to describe the phase dynamics of the condensates in presence of collisional losses. We find that a few inelastic processes are sufficient to damp the revivals of the phase. For this reason the observability of phase revivals for present experimental conditions is limited to condensates with a few hundreds of atoms.
