Bounding the $K(p-1)$-local exotic Picard group at $p>3$

In this paper, we bound the descent filtration of the exotic Picard group $\kappa_n$, for a prime number p>3 and n=p-1. Our method involves a detailed comparison of the Picard spectral sequence, the homotopy fixed point spectral sequence, and an auxiliary $\beta$-inverted homotopy fixed point spectral sequence whose input is the Farrell-Tate cohomology of the Morava stabilizer group. Along the way, we deduce that the K(n)-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for the sphere has a horizontal vanishing line at $3n^2+1$ on the $E_{2n^2+2}$-page. The same analysis also allows us to express the exotic Picard group of $K(n)$-local modules over the homotopy fixed points spectrum $\mathrm{E}_n^{hN}$, where N is the normalizer in $\mathbb{G}_n$ of a finite cyclic subgroup of order p, as a subquotient of a single continuous cohomology group $H^{2n+1}(N,\pi_{2n}\mathrm{E}_n)$.

Functor of Points and Height Functions for Noncommutative Arakelov Geometry

We propose a notion of functor of points for noncommutative spaces, valued in categories of bimodules, and endowed with an action functional determined by a notion of hermitian structures and height functions, modeled on an interpretation of the classical functor of points as a physical sigma model. We discuss different choices of such height functions, based on different notions of volumes and traces, including one based on the Hattori-Stallings rank. We show that the height function determines a dynamical time evolution on an algebra of observables associated to our functor of points. We focus in particular the case of noncommutative arithmetic curves, where the relevant algebras are sums of matrix algebras over division algebras over number fields, and we discuss a more general notion of noncommutative arithmetic spaces in higher dimensions, where our approach suggests an interpretation of the Jones index as a height function.

Wide nutation: binary black-hole spins repeatedly oscillating from full alignment to full anti-alignment

Within the framework of 2PN black-hole binary spin precession, we explore configurations where one of the two spins oscillates from being completely aligned with the orbital angular momentum to being completely anti-aligned with it during a single precession cycle. This "wide nutation" is the extreme limit of the generic phenomenon of spin nutation in black-hole binaries. Crucially, wide nutation happens on the short precession time scale and it is not a secular effect due to gravitational-wave radiation reaction. The spins of these binaries, therefore, flip repeatedly as one of these special configurations is entered. Binaries with total mass $M$, mass ratio $q$, and dimensionless spin $χ_1$ ($χ_2$) of the more (less) massive black hole are allowed to undergo wide nutation at binary separations $r \leq r_{\rm wide} \equiv [(q χ_2 - χ_1)/(1-q)]^2 M$. Sources that are more likely to nutate widely have similar masses and effective spins close to zero.
