Optimal Berry-Esseen rates on the Wiener space: the barrier of third and fourth cumulants

Let {F_n} be a normalized sequence of random variables in some fixed Wiener chaos associated with a general Gaussian field, and assume that E[F_n^4] --> E[N^4]=3, where N is a standard Gaussian random variable. Our main result is the following general bound: there exist two finite constants c,C>0 such that, for n sufficiently large, c max(|E[F_n^3]|, E[F_n^4]-3) < d(F_n,N) < C max(|E[F_n^3]|, E[F_n^4]-3), where d(F_n,N) = sup |E[h(F_n)] - E[h(N)]|, and h runs over the class of all real functions with a second derivative bounded by 1. This shows that the deterministic sequence max(|E[F_n^3]|, E[F_n^4]-3) completely characterizes the rate of convergence (with respect to smooth distances) in CLTs involving chaotic random variables. These results are used to determine optimal rates of convergence in the Breuer-Major central limit theorem, with specific emphasis on fractional Gaussian noise.

Paraproducts and Products of functions in $BMO(\mathbb R^n)$ and $H^1(\mathbb R^n)$ through wavelets

In this paper, we prove that the product (in the distribution sense) of two functions, which are respectively in $ \BMO(\bR^n)$ and $\H^1(\bR^n)$, may be written as the sum of two continuous bilinear operators, one from $\H^1(\bR^n)\times \BMO(\bR^n) $ into $L^1(\bR^n)$, the other one from $\H^1(\bR^n)\times \BMO(\bR^n) $ into a new kind of Hardy-Orlicz space denoted by $\H^{\log}(\bR^n)$. More precisely, the space $\H^{\log}(\bR^n)$ is the set of distributions $f$ whose grand maximal function $\mathcal Mf$ satisfies $$\int_{\mathbb R^n} \frac {|\mathcal M f(x)|}{\log(e+|x|) +\log (e+ |\mathcal Mf(x)|)}dx <\infty.$$ The two bilinear operators can be defined in terms of paraproducts. As a consequence, we find an endpoint estimate involving the space $\H^{\log}(\bR^n)$ for the $÷$-$\curl$ lemma.

Endpoint for the div-curl lemma in Hardy spaces

We give a div-curl type lemma for the wedge product of closed differential forms on R^n when they have coefficients respectively in a Hardy space and L^infinity or BMO. In this last case, the wedge product belongs to an appropriate Hardy-Orlicz space.

Products of Functions in Hardy and Lipschitz or Bmo Spaces

We define as a distribution the product of a function (or distribution) h in some Hardy space Hp with a function b in the dual space of Hp. Moreover, we prove that the product bxh may be written as the sum of an integrable function with a distribution that belongs to some Hardy-Orlicz space, or to the same Hardy space Hp, depending on the values of p.

Hankel Operators and Weak Factorization for Hardy-Orlicz Spaces

We study the holomorphic Hardy-Orlicz spaces H^Φ(Ω), where Ωis the unit ball or, more generally, a convex domain of finite type or a strictly pseudoconvex domain in Cn . The function Φis in particular such that H ^1(Ω) \subset H^Φ(Ω) \subset H ^p (Ω) for some p > 0. We develop for them maximal characterizations, atomic and molecular decompositions. We then prove weak factorization theorems involving the space BMOA(Omega). As a consequence, we characterize those Hankel operators which are bounded from H ^Φ(Ω) into H^1 (Ω).

Concentration of the integral norm of idempotents

This is a companion paper of a recent one, entitled {\sl Integral concentration of idempotent trigonometric polynomials with gaps}. New results of the present work concern $L^1$ concentration, while the above mentioned paper deals with $L^p$-concentration. Our aim here is two-fold. At the first place we try to explain methods and results, and give further straightforward corollaries. On the other hand, we push forward the methods to obtain a better constant for the possible concentration (in $L^1$ norm) of an idempotent on an arbitrary symmetric measurable set of positive measure. We prove a rather high level $γ_1>0.96$, which contradicts strongly the conjecture of Anderson et al. that there is no positive concentration in $L^1$ norm. The same problem is considered on the group $\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$, with $q$ say a prime number. There, the property of absolute integral concentration of idempotent polynomials fails, which is in a way a positive answer to the conjecture mentioned above. Our proof uses recent results of B. Green and S. Konyagin on the Littlewood Problem.

Integral Concentration of idempotent trigonometric polynomials with gaps

We prove that for all p>1/2 there exists a constant $γ_p>0$ such that, for any symmetric measurable set of positive measure $E\subset \TT$ and for any $γ<γ_p$, there is an idempotent trigonometrical polynomial f satisfying $\int_E |f|^p > γ\int_{\TT} |f|^p$. This disproves a conjecture of Anderson, Ash, Jones, Rider and Saffari, who proved the existence of $γ_p>0$ for p>1 and conjectured that it does not exists for p=1. Furthermore, we prove that one can take $γ_p=1$ when p>1 is not an even integer, and that polynomials f can be chosen with arbitrarily large gaps when $p\neq 2$. This shows striking differences with the case p=2, for which the best constant is strictly smaller than 1/2, as it has been known for twenty years, and for which having arbitrarily large gaps with such concentration of the integral is not possible, according to a classical theorem of Wiener. We find sharper results for $0<p\leq 1$ when we restrict to open sets, or when we enlarge the class of idempotent trigonometric polynomials to all positive definite ones.

Failure of Wiener's property for positive definite periodic functions

We say that Wiener's property holds for the exponent $p>0$ if we have that whenever a positive definite function $f$ belongs to $L^p(-ε,ε)$ for some $ε>0$, then $f$ necessarily belongs to $L^p(\TT)$, too. This holds true for $p\in 2\NN$ by a classical result of Wiener. Recently various concentration results were proved for idempotents and positive definite functions on measurable sets on the torus. These new results enable us to prove a sharp version of the failure of Wiener's property for $p\notin 2\NN$. Thus we obtain strong extensions of results of Wainger and Shapiro, who proved the negative answer to Wiener's problem for $p\notin 2\NN$.

Discrete radar ambiguity problems

In this paper, we pursue the study of the radar ambiguity problem started in \cite{Ja,GJP}. More precisely, for a given function $u$ we ask for all functions $v$ (called \emph{ambiguity partners}) such that the ambiguity functions of $u$ and $v$ have same modulus. In some cases, $v$ may be given by some elementary transformation of $u$ and is then called a \emph{trivial partner} of $u$ otherwise we call it a \emph{strange partner}. Our focus here is on two discrete versions of the problem. For the first one, we restrict the problem to functions $u$ of the Hermite class, $u=P(x)e^{-x^2/2}$, thus reducing it to an algebraic problem on polynomials. Up to some mild restriction satisfied by quasi-all and almost-all polynomials, we show that such a function has only trivial partners. The second discretization, restricting the problem to pulse type signals, reduces to a combinatorial problem on matrices of a special form. We then exploit this to obtain new examples of functions that have only trivial partners. In particular, we show that most pulse type signals have only trivial partners. Finally, we clarify the notion of \emph{trivial partner}, showing that most previous counterexamples are still trivial in some restricted sense.

Truncations of multilinear Hankel operators

We extend to multilinear Hankel operators the fact that some truncations of bounded Hankel operators are bounded. We prove and use a continuity property of bilinear Hilbert transforms on products of Lipschitz spaces and Hardy spaces.

Maximum boundary regularity of bounded Hua-harmonic functions on tube domains

In this paper we prove that bounded Hua-harmonic functions on tube domains that satisfy some boundary regularity condition are necessarily pluriharmonic. In doing so, we show that a similar theorem is true on one-dimensional extensions of the Heisenberg group or equivalently on the Siegel upper half-plane.

Hermite functions and uncertainty principles for the Fourier and the windowed Fourier transforms

We extend an uncertainty principle due to Beurling into a characterization of Hermite functions. More precisely, all functions $f$ on $\R^d$ which may be written as $P(x)\exp (Ax,x)$, with $A$ a real symmetric definite positive matrix, are characterized by integrability conditions on the product $f(x)\hat{f}(y)$. We also give the best constant in uncertainty principles of Gelf'and Shilov type. We then obtain similar results for the windowed Fourier transform (also known, up to elementary changes of functions, as the radar ambiguity function or the Wigner transform). We complete the paper with a sharp version of Heisenberg's inequality for this transform.
