Real space renormalization of Majorana fermions in quantum nano-wire superconductors

We have applied the real space quantum renormalization group approach to study the topological quantum phase transition in the one-dimensional chain of a spinless p-wave superconductor. We investigate the behavior of local compressibility and ground-state fidelity of the Kitaev chain. We show that the topological phase transition is signaled by the maximum of local compressibility at the quantum critical point tuned by the chemical potential. Moreover, a sudden drop of the ground-state fidelity and the divergence of fidelity susceptibility at the topological quantum critical point have been used as a proper indicators for the topological quantum phase transition, which signals the appearance of Majorana fermions. We also present the scaling analysis of ground-state fidelity near the critical point that manifests the universal information about the topological phase transition.

Surface state tunneling signatures in two-component superconductor UPt$_3$

Quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging of Bogoliubov excitations in quasi-two dimensional unconventional superconductors has become a powerful technique for measuring the superconducting gap and its symmetry. Here, we present the extension of this method to three-dimensional superconductors and analyze the expected QPI spectrum for the two-component heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ whose gap structure is still controversial. Starting from a 3D electronic structure and the three proposed chiral gap models $E_{1g,u}$ or $E_{2u}$, we perform a slab calculation that determines the 2D continuum Bogoliubov- de Gennes (BdG) surface quasiparticle bands and in addition the in-gap flat-band Andreev bound states that lead to surface Weyl arcs connecting the projected gap nodes. Both features are very distinct for the three models, in particular the most prominent $E_{2u}$ candidate is singled out by the existence of {\it two} Weyl arcs due to the double monopole node points. The signature of these distinct surface bound and continuum states that is left in QPI is derived and discussed. We show that it provides a fingerprint that may finally determine the true nodal structure of UPt$_3$ superconductor.

Anisotropic spin fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: role of spin-orbit coupling and induced strain

We analyze the spin anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility of Sr$_2$RuO$4$ in presence of spin-orbit coupling and anisotropic strain using quasi-two-dimensional tight-binding parametrization fitted to the ARPES results. Similar to the previous observations we find the in-plane polarization of the low ${\bf q}$ magnetic fluctuations and the out-of-plane polarization of the incommensurate magnetic fluctuation at the nesting wave vector ${\bf Q}_1 = (2/3 π,2/3 π)$ but also nearly isotropic fluctuations near ${\bf Q}_2=(π/6,π/6)$. Furthermore, one finds that apart from the high-symmetry direction of the tetragonal Brillouin zone the magnetic anisotropy is maximal, i.e. $χ^{xx} \neq χ^{yy} \neq χ^{zz}$. This is the consequence of the orbital anisotropy of the $xz$ and $yz$ orbitals in the momentum space. We also study how the magnetic anisotropy evolves in the presence of the strain and find strong Ising-like ferromagnetic fluctuations near the Lifshitz transition for the $xy$-band.

Momentum space imaging of the FFLO state

In a magnetic field superconductors (SC) with small orbital effect exhibit the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase above the Pauli limiting field. It is characterized by Cooper pairs with finite center of mass momentum and is stabilized by the gain in Zeeman energy of depaired electrons in the imbalanced Fermi gas. The ground state is a coherent superposition of paired and depaired states. This concept, although central to the FFLO state lacks a direct experimental confirmation. We propose that STM quasiparticle interference (QPI) can give a direct momentum space image of the depaired states in the FFLO wave function. For a proof of principle we investigate a 2D single orbital tight binding model with a SC s-wave order parameter. Using the equilibrium values of pair momentum and SC gap we calculate the spectral function of quasiparticles and associated QPI spectrum as function of magnetic field. We show that the characteristic depaired Fermi surface parts appear as a fingerprint in the QPI spectrum of the FFLO phase and we demonstrate its evolution with field strength. Its observation in STM experiments would constitute a direct proof for FFLO ground state wave function.

Investigation of magnetic phases in parent compounds of Iron-chalcogenides via quasiparticle scattering interference

We employ a five-orbital tight-binding model to develop the mean field solution for various possible spin density wave states in the iron-chalcogenides. The quasiparticle interference (QPI) technique is applied to detect signatures of these states due to scatterings arising from non-magnetic impurities. Apart from the experimentally observed double striped structure with ordering vector $(π/2,π/2)$, the QPI method is investigated for the extended-stripe as well as the orthogonal double stripe phase. We discuss QPI as a possible tool to detect and classify various magnetic structures with different electronic structure reconstruction within framework of the Fe$_{1+y}$Te compound.

Resonant spin excitations in unconventional heavy fermion superconductors and Kondo lattice compounds

The heavy quasiparticle bands in Kondo materials which originate in the hybridization of f- and conduction electrons exhibit numerous, sometimes coexisting, broken symmetry phases. Most notable are unconventional superconductivity, itinerant small moment antiferromagnetism and hidden order of higher order multipoles of f-electrons which all lead to a gapping of the heavy bands. In rare cases the chemical potential lies within the hybridization gap and the ground state is a Kondo semiconductor without ordering. The dynamical magnetic response of such gapped f-electron systems has been investigated with inelastic neutron scattering. It was found that collective spin exciton modes which are due to residual quasiparticle interactions appear below the threshold of superconducting or hidden order gap or directly the hybridzation gap. The spin exciton resonance is commonly located around a zone boundary vector $Q$ with nesting properties in the normal state. In the superconducting case its appearance gives a strong criterion for the gap symmetry requesting a sign change $Δ_{{\bf k}+{\bf Q}}=-Δ_{\bf k}$ due to the coherence factors. Therefore this many body effect with fundamental importance may also be used as a tool to discriminate between proposed gap models. While the spin resonance has been observed for many compounds we restrict our discussion here exclusively to the small group of f-electron superconductors CeCoIn5, CeCu2Si2 and UPd2Al3, hidden order Kondo compounds CeB6 and URu2Si2 as well as the Kondo semiconductor YbB12 .

Collective spin resonance excitation in the gapped itinerant multipole hidden order phase of URu2Si2

An attractive proposal for the hidden order (HO) in the heavy electron compound URu2Si2 is an itinerant multipole order of high rank. It is due to the pairing of electrons and holes centered on zone center and boundary, respectively in states that have maximally different total angular momentum components. Due to the pairing with commensurate zone boundary ordering vector the translational symmetry is broken and a HO quasiparticle gap opens below the transition temperature T_HO. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has demonstrated that for T<T_HO the collective magnetic response is dominated by a sharp spin exciton resonance at the ordering vector Q that is reminiscent of spin exciton modes found inside the gap of unconventional superconductors and Kondo insulators. We use an effective two-orbital tight binding model incorporating the crystalline electric field effect to derive closed expressions for quasiparticle bands reconstructed by the multipolar pairing terms. We show that the magnetic response calculated within that model exhibits the salient features of the resonance found in INS. We also use the calculated dynamical susceptibility to explain the low temperature NMR relaxation rate.

Gapped Quantum Criticality Gains Long Time Quantum Correlations

We show gapped critical environment could remarkably prevent an enhanced decay of decoherence factor and quantum correlations at the critical point, which is nontrivially different from the ones in a gapless critical environment (Quan, et.al Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{96}, 140604 (2006)). The quantum correlations display very fast decaying to their local minimum at the critical point while maximum decaying occurs away from this point. In particular, our results imply that collapse of decoherence factor is not indicator of a quantum phase transition of environment as opposed to what happens in a gapless criticallity. In the week coupling regime, the relaxation time, at which the quantum correlations touch rapidly local minima, shows a power-law singularity as a function of gap. Furthermore, quantum correlations decay exponentially with second power of relaxation time. Our results are important for a better understanding and characterisation of gap critical environment and its ability as entanglers in open quantum systems.

Hidden order symmetry and superconductivity in URu2Si2 investigated by quasiparticle interference

The hidden order (HO) in URu2Si2 has been determined as a high rank multipole formed by itinerant 5f-electrons with distinct orbital structure imposed by the crystalline electric field. Because this can lead to a considerable number of different multipoles it is of great importance to use microscopic techniques that are sensitive to their subtle physical differences. Here we investigate whether quasiparticle interference (QPI) method can distinguish between the two most frequently proposed HO parameter models: the even rank-4 hexadecapole and the odd-rank-5 dotriacontapole model. We obtain the quasiparticle dispersion and reconstructed Fermi surface in each HO phase adapting an effective two-orbital model of 5f bands that reproduces the main Fermi surface sheets of the para phase. We show that the resulting QPI spectrum reflects directly the effect of fourfold symmetry breaking in the rank-5 model which is absent in the rank-4 model. Therefore we suggest that QPI method should give a possibility of direct discrimination between the two most investigated models of HO in URu2Si2. Furthermore the signature of proposed chiral d-wave superconducting (SC) order parameter in QPI of the coexisting HO+SC phase is investigated.

Magnetic Excitations in Spin-Orbit Coupled $d^4$ Mott Insulator on Square Lattice

We study the magnetic order and excitations in strong spin-orbit coupled, Van Vleck-type, $d^4$ Mott insulators on a square lattice. Extending the previous work, we include the tetragonal crystal field splitting and explore its effects on magnetic phase diagram and magnon spectra. Two different ordered phases, with in-plane and out-of-plane orientation of the staggered moments, are found for the higher and lower values of the crystal field splitting, respectively. The magnetic excitation spectra for paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases are calculated and discussed in the context of a candidate spin-orbit $d^4$ Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$.

Gap function of hexagonal pnictide superconductor SrPtAs from quasiparticle interference spectrum

The pnictide superconductor SrPtAs has a hexagonal layered structure containing inversion symmetry. It is formed by stacking two inequivalent PtAs layers separated by Sr layers. The former have no local (in-plane) inversion symmetry and therefore a (layer-) staggered Rashba spin orbit coupling appears which splits the three Kramers degenerate bands into six quasi-2D bands. The symmetry of the superconducting state of SrPtAs is unknown. Three candidates, spin-singlet $A_{1g}$ and $E_g$ as well as triplet $A_{2u}$ states have been proposed. We predict the quasiparticle interference (QPI) spectrum for these gap functions in t-matrix Born approximation. We show that distinct differences in the pattern of characteristic QPI wave vectors appear. These results may be important to determine the gap symmetry of SrPtAs by STM-QPI method.

Full t-matrix approach to quasiparticle interference in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We develop the full t-matrix theory of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We give a closed solution for the QPI spectrum for arbitrary combination and strength of nonmagnetic (Vc) and magnetic (Vm) impurity scattering potentials in terms of integrated normal and anomalous Green's functions. The theory is applied to a realistic 2D model of the Ce-based 131- type heavy fermion superconductors. We discuss the QPI dependence on frequency, composition and strength of scattering and compare with Born approximation results. We show that the QPI pattern is remarkably stable against changes in the scattering model and can therefore give reliable information on the properties of Rashba-split Fermi surface sheets and in particular on the accidental nodal position of the mixed singlet-triplet gap function in NCS superconductors.

Multiorbital and hybridization effects in the quasiparticle interference of triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4

The tetragonal compound Sr2RuO4 exhibits a chiral p-wave superconducting (SC) state of its three t2g-type conduction bands. The characteristics of unconventional gap structure are known from experiment, in particular field-angle resolved specific heat measurements and from microscopic theories. A rotated extremal structure on the main active SC band with respect to the nodal gaps on the passive bands was concluded. We propose that this gap structure can be further specified by applying the STM- quasiparticle interference (QPI) method. We calculate the QPI spectrum within a three band and chiral three gap model and give closed analytical expressions. We show that as function of bias voltage the chiral three gap model will lead to characteristic changes in QPI that may be identified and may be used for more quantitative gap determination of the chiral gap structure.

Rashba spin-orbit coupling effects in quasiparticle interference of non-centrosymmetric superconductors

The theory of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is developed using T-matrix theory in Born approximation. We show that qualitatively new effects in the QPI pattern originate from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling: The resulting spin coherence factors lead to a distinct difference of charge- and spin- QPI and to an induced spin anisotropy in the latter even for isotropic magnetic impurity scattering. In particular a cross - QPI appears describing the spin oscillation pattern due to nonmagnetic impurity scattering which is directly related to the Rashba vector. We apply our theory to a 2D model for the NCS heavy fermion unconventional superconductor CePt$_3$Si and discuss the new QPI features for a gap model with accidental node lines due to its composite singlet-triplet nature.

Evolution of the multiband RKKY interaction: Application to iron pnictides and chalcogenides

The indirect RKKY interaction in iron pnictide and chalcogenide metals is calculated for a simplified four bands Fermi surface (FS) model. We investigate the specific multi-band features and show that distinct length scales of the RKKY oscillations appear. For the regular lattice of the local moments, the generalized RKKY interaction is defined in momentum space. We consider its momentum dependence in paramagnetic and spin density wave (SDW) phases, discuss its implications for the possible type of magnetic order and compare it to the results obtained from more realistic tight-binding type Fermi surface model. Our finding can give important clues on the magnetic ordering of the 4f- iron based superconductors.

Theory of nonequilibrium dynamics of multiband superconductors

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of multiband BCS superconductors subjected to ultrashort pump pulses. Using density-matrix theory, the time evolution of the Bogoliubov quasiparticle densities and the superconducting order parameters are computed as a function of pump pulse frequency, duration, and intensity. Focusing on two-band superconductors, we consider two different model systems. The first one, relevant for iron-based superconductors, describes two-band superconductors with a repulsive interband interaction $V_{12}$ which is much larger than the intraband pairing terms. The second model, relevant for MgB$_2$, deals with the opposite limit where the intraband interactions are dominant and the interband pair scattering $V_{12}$ is weak but attractive. For ultrashort pump pulses, both of these models exhibit a nonadiabatic behavior which is characterized by oscillations of the superconducting order parameters. We find that for nonvanishing $V_{12}$, the superconducting gap on each band exhibits two oscillatory frequencies which are determined by the long-time asymptotic values of the gaps. The relative strength of these two frequency components depends sensitively on the magnitude of the interband interaction $V_{12}$.

Inelastic magnetic scattering effect on LDOS of topological insulators

Magnetic ions such as Fe, Mn and Co with localized spins may be adsorbed on the surface of topological insulators like \Bi. They form scattering centers for the helical surface states which have a Dirac cone dispersion as long as the local spins are disordered. However, the local density of states (LDOS) may be severely modified by the formation of bound states. Commonly only elastic scattering due to normal and exchange potentials of the adatom is assumed. Magnetization measurements show, however, that considerable magnetic single ion anisotropies exist which lead to a splitting of the local impurity spin states resulting in a singlet ground state. Therefore inelastic scattering processes of helical Dirac electrons become possible as described by a dynamical local self energy of second order in the exchange interaction. The self energy influences bound state formation and leads to significant new anomalies in the LDOS at low energies and low temperatures which we calculate within T-matrix approach. We propose that they may be used for spectroscopy of local impurity spin states by appropriate tuning of chemical potential and magnetic field.

Field induced spin exciton doublet splitting in d_{x^2-y^2}-wave 115-heavy electron superconductors

We investigate the spin-exciton modes in the superconducting d_{x^2-y^2} state of CeMIn_5 heavy fermion compounds found at the antiferromagnetic wave vector by inelastic neutron scattering. We present a theoretical model that explains the field dependence for both field directions. We show that the recently observed splitting of the spin exciton doublet in CeCoIn_5 into two non-degenerate modes for in-plane field appears naturally in this model. This is due to the spin anisotropy of g- factors and quasiparticle interactions which lead to different resonant conditions for the dynamic susceptibility components. We predict that the splitting of the spin resonance doublet becomes strongly nonlinear for larger fields when the energy of both split components decreases. For field along the tetragonal axis no splitting but only a broadening of the resonance is found in agreement with experiment.
