Wavelength-scale Optical Parametric Oscillators

Despite recent progress in nonlinear optics in wavelength-scale resonators, there are still open questions on the possibility of parametric oscillation in such resonators. We present a general approach to predict the behavior and estimate the oscillation threshold of multi-mode subwavelength and wavelength-scale optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). As an example, we propose an OPO based on Mie-type multipolar resonances, and we demonstrate that due to the low-Q nature of multipolar modes in wavelength-scale resonators, there is a nonlinear interaction between these modes. As a result, the OPO threshold, compared to the single-mode case, can be reduced by a factor that is significantly larger than the number of interacting modes. The multi-mode interaction can also lead to a phase transition manifested through a sudden change in the parametric gain as well as the oscillation threshold, which can be utilized for enhanced sensing. We establish an explicit connection between the second-harmonic generation efficiency and the OPO threshold. This allows us to estimate the OPO threshold based on measured or simulated second-harmonic generation in different classes of resonators, such as bound states in the continuum and inversely designed resonators. Our approach for analyzing and modeling miniaturized OPOs can open unprecedented opportunities for classical and quantum nonlinear photonics.

Non-Dissipative Non-Hermitian Dynamics and Exceptional Points in Coupled Optical Parametric Oscillators

Engineered non-Hermitian systems featuring exceptional points can lead to a host of extraordinary phenomena in diverse fields ranging from photonics, acoustics, opto-mechanics, electronics, to atomic physics. Here we introduce and present non-Hermitian dynamics of coupled optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) arising from phase-sensitive amplification and de-amplification, and show their distinct advantages over conventional non-Hermitian systems relying on laser gain and loss. OPO-based non-Hermitian systems can benefit from the instantaneous nature of the parametric gain, noiseless phase-sensitive amplification, and rich quantum and classical nonlinear dynamics. We show that two coupled OPOs can exhibit spectral anti-PT symmetry and an exceptional point between its degenerate and non-degenerate operation regimes. To demonstrate the distinct potentials of the coupled OPO system compared to conventional non-Hermitian systems, we present higher-order exceptional points with two OPOs, tunable Floquet exceptional points in a reconfigurable dynamic non-Hermitian system, and generation of squeezed vacuum around exceptional points, all of which are not easy to realize in other non-Hermitian platforms. Our results show that coupled OPOs are an outstanding non-Hermitian setting with unprecedented opportunities in realizing nonlinear dynamical systems for enhanced sensing and quantum information processing.

Spectral Phase Transitions in Optical Parametric Oscillators

Spectral behaviors of photonic resonators have been the basis for a range of fundamental studies, with applications in classical and quantum technologies. Driven nonlinear resonators provide a fertile ground for phenomena related to phase transitions far from equilibrium, which can open opportunities unattainable in their linear counterparts. Here, we show that optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) can undergo second-order phase transitions in the spectral domain between degenerate and non-degenerate regimes. This abrupt change in the spectral response follows a square-root dependence around the critical point, exhibiting high sensitivity to parameter variation akin to systems around an exceptional point. We experimentally demonstrate such a phase transition in a quadratic OPO, map its dynamics to the universal Swift-Hohenberg equation, and extend it to Kerr OPOs. To emphasize the fundamental importance and consequences of this phase transition, we show that the divergent susceptibility of the critical point is accompanied by spontaneous symmetry breaking and distinct phase noise properties in the two regimes, indicating the importance of a beyond nonlinear bifurcation interpretation. We also predict the occurrence of first-order spectral phase transitions in coupled OPOs. Our results on non-equilibrium spectral behaviors can be utilized for enhanced sensing, advanced computing, and quantum information processing.

Mie resonance engineering in meta-shell supraparticles for nanoscale nonlinear optics

Supraparticles are coordinated assemblies of discrete nanoscale building blocks into complex and hierarchical colloidal superstructures. Holistic optical responses in such assemblies are not observed in an individual building block or in their bulk counterparts. Furthermore, subwavelength dimensions of the unit building blocks enable engraving optical metamaterials within the supraparticle, which thus far has been beyond the current pool of colloidal engineering. This can lead to effective optical features in a colloidal platform with unprecedented ability to tune the electromagnetic responses of these particles. Here, we introduce and demonstrate the nanophotonics of meta-shell supraparticle (MSP), an all dielectric colloidal superstructure having an optical nonlinear metamaterial shell conformed onto a spherical core. We show that the metamaterial shell facilitates engineering the Mie resonances in the MSP that enable significant enhancement of the second harmonic generation (SHG). We show several orders of magnitude enhancement of second-harmonic generation in an MSP compared to its building blocks. Furthermore, we show an absolute conversion efficiency as high as 10^-7 far from the damage threshold, setting a new benchmark for SHG with low-index colloids. The MSP provides pragmatic solutions for instantaneous wavelength conversions with colloidal platforms that are suitable for chemical and biological applications. Their engineerability and scalability promise a fertile ground for nonlinear nanophotonics in the colloidal platforms with structural and material diversity.

Realizing spin-Hamiltonians in nanoscale active photonic lattices

Spin models arise in the microscopic description of magnetic materials, where the macroscopic characteristics are governed by exchange interactions among the constituent magnetic moments. Recently, there has been a growing interest in complex systems with spin Hamiltonians, largely due to the rich behaviors exhibited by such interactions at the macroscale. Along these lines, it has been shown that certain classes of optimization problems involving large degrees of freedom can be effectively mapped into classical spin models. In this vein, the respective extremum can be found by identifying the ground state of the associated spin Hamiltonian. Here, we show both theoretically and experimentally, that the cooperative interplay among vectorial electromagnetic modes in coupled metallic nanolasers can be utilized as a means to emulate certain types of spin-like systems. The ensuing spin exchange interactions are in general anisotropic, in a way similar to that encountered in magnetic materials involving spin-orbit coupling. For some topologies, we find that these active nanophotonic structures are governed by a classical XY Hamiltonian that exhibits two phases akin to those associated with ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) materials. In addition, we show that in certain configurations, the electromagnetic field distribution can undergo geometrical frustration, depending on the lattice shape and the transverse resonant modes supported by the individual cavity elements. Our results could pave the way towards a new scalable nanophotonic platform to study spin exchange interactions, that can in turn be potentially exploited to investigate more large-scale networks, emulate some magnetic materials, or to address a variety of optimization problems.

Ultrabroadband Nonlinear Optics in Nanophotonic Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Waveguides

Quasi-phasematched interactions in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearities enable highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversion. In this article, we demonstrate the first generation of devices that combine the dispersion-engineering available in nanophotonic waveguides with quasi-phasematched nonlinear interactions available in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). This combination enables quasi-static interactions of femtosecond pulses, reducing the pulse energy requirements by several orders of magnitude, from picojoules to femtojoules. We experimentally demonstrate two effects associated with second harmonic generation. First, we observe efficient quasi-phasematched second harmonic generation with <100 fJ of pulse energy. Second, in the limit of strong phase-mismatch, we observe spectral broadening of both harmonics with as little as 2-pJ of pulse energy. These results lay a foundation for a new class of nonlinear devices, in which co-engineering of dispersion with quasi-phasematching enables efficient nonlinear optics at the femtojoule level.

Experimental investigation of performance differences between Coherent Ising Machines and a quantum annealer

Physical annealing systems provide heuristic approaches to solving NP-hard Ising optimization problems. Here, we study the performance of two types of annealing machines--a commercially available quantum annealer built by D-Wave Systems, and measurement-feedback coherent Ising machines (CIMs) based on optical parametric oscillator networks--on two classes of problems, the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model and MAX-CUT. The D-Wave quantum annealer outperforms the CIMs on MAX-CUT on regular graphs of degree 3. On denser problems, however, we observe an exponential penalty for the quantum annealer ($\exp(-α_\textrm{DW} N^2)$) relative to CIMs ($\exp(-α_\textrm{CIM} N)$) for fixed anneal times, on both the SK model and on 50%-edge-density MAX-CUT, where the coefficients $α_\textrm{CIM}$ and $α_\textrm{DW}$ are problem-class-dependent. On instances with over $50$ vertices, a several-orders-of-magnitude time-to-solution difference exists between CIMs and the D-Wave annealer. An optimal-annealing-time analysis is also consistent with a significant projected performance difference. The difference in performance between the sparsely connected D-Wave machine and the measurement-feedback facilitated all-to-all connectivity of the CIMs provides strong experimental support for efforts to increase the connectivity of quantum annealers.

Ultrahigh-efficiency second-harmonic generation in nanophotonic PPLN waveguides

Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide is a powerful platform for efficient wavelength conversion. Conventional PPLN converters however typically require long device lengths and high pump powers due to the limited nonlinear interaction strength. Here we use a nanostructured PPLN waveguides to demonstrate an ultrahigh normalized efficiency of 2600%/W-cm$^2$ for second-harmonic generation of 1.5-$μ$m radiation, more than 20 times higher than that in state-of-the-art diffused waveguides. This is achieved by a combination of sub-wavelength optical confinement and high-fidelity periodic poling at a first-order poling period of 4 $μ$m. Our highly integrated PPLN waveguides are promising for future chip-scale integration of classical and quantum photonic systems.

Temporal Simultons in Optical Parametric Oscillators

We identify and demonstrate a regime of operation in optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) in which the formation of temporal simultons produces stable half-harmonic pulses. Simultons are simultanous bright-dark solitons of a signal field at frequency $ω$ and the pump field at $2ω$ which form in a quadratic nonlinear medium. The formation of simultons in an OPO is evidenced by sech$^2$ spectra with broad instantaneous bandwidths which increase with pump power, and large slope efficiencies. In contrast to conventional synchronously pumped OPOs, operation in this regime is achieved by using relatively large parametric gains, and a low finesse resonator detuned to a slightly longer roundtrip time than the pump repetition period. In the experiment we achieve sub-50 fs sech$^2$ pulses with a slope efficiency of 570%, and a conversion efficiency of 55% as a result of formation of simultons in an OPO. We verify the distinct features of OPO operation in the simulton regime analytically and numerically. These results represent a fundamental shift in the understanding and design of OPOs, in which the nonlinear dynamics that arise during asynchronous operation can be used to efficiently generate few-cycle long-wavelength frequency combs.

Reduced models and design principles for half-harmonic generation in synchronously-pumped optical parametric oscillators

We develop reduced models that describe half-harmonic generation in a synchronously-pumped optical parametric oscillator above threshold, where nonlinearity, dispersion, and group-velocity mismatch are all relevant. These models are based on (1) an eigenmode expansion for low pump powers, (2) a simulton-like sech-pulse ansatz for intermediate powers, and (3) dispersionless box-shaped pulses for high powers. Analytic formulas for pulse compression, degenerate vs. nondegenerate operation, and stability are derived and compared to numerical and experimental results.

A 16-bit Coherent Ising Machine for One-Dimensional Ring and Cubic Graph Problems

Many tasks in our modern life, such as planning an efficient travel, image processing and optimizing integrated circuit design, are modeled as complex combinatorial optimization problems with binary variables. Such problems can be mapped to finding a ground state of the Ising Hamiltonian, thus various physical systems have been studied to emulate and solve this Ising problem. Recently, networks of mutually injected optical oscillators, called coherent Ising machines, have been developed as promising solvers for the problem, benefiting from programmability, scalability and room temperature operation. Here, we report a 16-bit coherent Ising machine based on a network of time-division-multiplexed femtosecond degenerate optical parametric oscillators. The system experimentally gives more than 99.6 % of success rates for one-dimensional Ising ring and nondeterministic polynomial-time (NP) hard instances. The experimental and numerical results indicate that gradual pumping of the network combined with multiple spectral and temporal modes of the femtosecond pulses can improve the computational performance of the Ising machine, offering a new path for tackling larger and more complex instances.

Simulating the classical XY model with a laser network

Drawing fair samples from the Boltzmann distribution of a statistical model is a challenging task for modern digital computers. We propose a physical implementation of a Boltzmann sampler for the classical XY model by using a laser network. The XY spins are mapped onto the phases of multiple laser pulses in a fiber ring cavity and the steady-state distribution of phases naturally realizes the Boltzmann distribution of the corresponding XY model. We experimentally implement the laser network by using an actively mode-locked fiber laser with optical delay lines, and demonstrate Boltzmann sampling for a one-dimensional XY ring.

Quantum correlation in degenerate optical parametric oscillators with mutual injections

We theoretically and numerically study the quantum dynamics of two degenerate optical parametric oscillators with mutual injections. The cavity mode in the optical coupling path between the two oscillator facets is explicitly considered. Stochastic equations for the oscillators and mutual injection path based on the positive $P$ representation are derived. The system of two gradually pumped oscillators with out-of-phase mutual injections is simulated, and its quantum state is investigated. When the incoherent loss of the oscillators other than the mutual injections is small, the squeezed quadratic amplitudes $\hat{p}$ in the oscillators are positively correlated near the oscillation threshold. It indicates finite quantum correlation, estimated via Gaussian quantum discord, and the entanglement between the intracavity subharmonic fields. When the loss in the injection path is low, each oscillator around the phase transition point forms macroscopic superposition even under a small pump noise. It suggests that the squeezed field stored in the low-loss injection path weakens the decoherence in the oscillators.

Cascaded half-harmonic generation of femtosecond frequency combs in mid-IR

For the growing demand of frequency combs in mid-infrared (mid-IR), known as the "molecular fingerprint" region of the spectrum [1], down conversion of near-IR frequency combs through half- harmonic generation offers numerous benefits including high conversion efficiency and intrinsic phase and frequency locking to the near-IR pump [2]. Hence cascaded half-harmonic generation promises a simple path towards extending the wavelength coverage of stable frequency combs. Here, we report a two-octave down-conversion of a frequency comb around 1 μm through cascaded half-harmonic generation with ~64% efficiency in the first stage, and ~18% in the second stage. We obtain broadband intrinsically-frequency-locked frequency combs with ~50-fs pulses at ~2 μm and ~110-fs pulses at ~4 μm. These results indicate the effectiveness of half-harmonic generation as a universal tool for efficient phase- and frequency-locked down-conversion, which can be beneficial for numerous applications requiring long-wavelength coherent sources.

Network of Time-Multiplexed Optical Parametric Oscillators as a Coherent Ising Machine

Finding the ground states of the Ising Hamiltonian [1] maps to various combinatorial optimization problems in biology, medicine, wireless communications, artificial intelligence, and social network. So far no efficient classical and quantum algorithm is known for these problems, and intensive research is focused on creating physical systems - Ising machines - capable of finding the absolute or approximate ground states of the Ising Hamiltonian [2-6]. Here we report a novel Ising machine using a network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). Spins are represented with above-threshold binary phases of the OPOs and the Ising couplings are realized by mutual injections [7]. The network is implemented in a single OPO ring cavity with multiple trains of femtosecond pulses and configurable mutual couplings, and operates at room temperature. We programed the smallest non-deterministic polynomial time (NP)- hard Ising problem on the machine, and in 1000 runs of the machine no computational error was detected.

A Coherent Ising Machine Based On Degenerate Optical Parametric Oscillators

A degenerate optical parametric oscillator network is proposed to solve the NP-hard problem of finding a ground state of the Ising model. The underlying operating mechanism originates from the bistable output phase of each oscillator and the inherent preference of the network in selecting oscillation modes with the minimum photon decay rate. Computational experiments are performed on all instances reducible to the NP-hard MAX-CUT problems on cubic graphs of order up to 20. The numerical results reasonably suggest the effectiveness of the proposed network.

Intracavity trace molecular detection with a broadband mid-IR frequency comb source

Ultrasensitive detection of methane, isotopic carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, acetylene and ethylene is performed in the spectral range 2.5 - 5 μm using intracavity spectroscopy in broadband optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). The OPOs were operated near degeneracy and synchronously pumped either by a mode-locked erbium (1560 nm) or thulium (2050 nm) fiber laser. A large instantaneous bandwidth of up to 800 cm$^{-1}$ allows for simultaneous detection of several gases. We observe an effective path length enhancement due to coherent interaction inside the OPO cavity and achieve part-per-billion sensitivity levels. The measured spectral shapes are in good agreement with a model that takes into account group delay dispersion across the broad OPO frequency band.

Mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in tapered chalcogenide fiber for producing octave-spanning frequency comb around 3 μm

We demonstrate mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation (SCG) with instantaneous bandwidth from 2.2 to 5 μm at 40 dB below the peak, covering the wavelength range desirable for molecular spectroscopy and numerous other applications. The SCG occurs in a tapered As2S3 fiber prepared by in-situ tapering and is pumped by femtosecond pulses from the subharmonic of a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. Interference with a narrow linewidth c.w. laser verifies that the coherence properties of the near-IR frequency comb have been preserved through these cascaded nonlinear processes. With this approach stable broad mid-IR frequency combs can be derived from commercially available near-IR frequency combs without an extra stabilization mechanism.
