Switching Control of Linear Time-Varying Networked Control Systems with Sparse Observer-Controller Networks

In this paper we provide a set of stability conditions for linear time-varying networked control systems with arbitrary topologies using a piecewise quadratic switching stabilization approach with multiple quadratic Lyapunov functions. We use this set of stability conditions to provide a novel iterative low-complexity algorithm that must be updated and optimized in discrete time for the design of a sparse observer-controller network, for a given plant network with an arbitrary topology. We employ distributed observers by utilizing the output of other subsystems to improve the stability of each observer. To avoid unbounded growth of controller and observer gains, we impose bounds on the norms of the gains.

Synchronization in Networked Systems with Parameter Mismatch: Adaptive Decentralized and Distributed Controls

Here, we study the ultimately bounded stability of network of mismatched systems using Lyapunov direct method. We derive an upper bound on the norm of the error of network states from its average states, which it achieves in finite time. Then, we devise a decentralized compensator to asymptotically pin the network of mismatched systems to a desired trajectory. Next, we design distributed estimators to compensate for the mismatched parameters performances of adaptive decentralized and distributed compensations are analyzed. Our analytical results are verified by several simulations in a network of globally connected Lorenz oscillators.

Bounded Stability in Networked Systems with Parameter Mismatch and Adaptive Decentralized Estimation

Here, we study the ultimately bounded stability of network of mismatched systems using Lyapunov direct method. The upper bound on the error of oscillators from the center of the neighborhood is derived. Then the performance of an adaptive compensation via decentralized control is analyzed. Finally, the analytical results for a network of globally connected Lorenz oscillators are verified.

On the Existence of an MVU Estimator for Target Localization with Censored, Noise Free Binary Detectors

The problem of target localization with censored noise free binary detectors is considered. In this setting only the detecting sensors report their locations to the fusion center. It is proven that if the radius of detection is not known to the fusion center, a minimum variance unbiased (MVU) estimator does not exist. Also it is shown that when the radius is known the center of mass of the possible target region is the MVU estimator. In addition, a sub-optimum estimator is introduced whose performance is close to the MVU estimator but is preferred computationally. Furthermore, minimal sufficient statistics have been provided, both when the detection radius is known and when it is not. Simulations confirmed that the derived MVU estimator outperforms several heuristic location estimators.

Probability of Stability of Synchronization in Random Networks of Mismatched Oscillators

The stability of synchronization state in networks of oscillators are studied under the assumption that oscillators and their couplings have slightly mismatched parameters. A generalized master stability function is provided that takes the mismatches into account. Using this master stability function a lower bound on the probability of synchronization is derived for regular and random network models. The probability of stability of synchronization is then used to study the phase transition behavior of the networks. Numerical examples using van der Pol oscillators are used to illustrate the results and verify the validity of the analysis. Moreover, the synchronization trend as a function of statistics of mismatches in the coupling and local dynamics is investigated using this numerical example.

Stabilization of Networked Control Systems with Sparse Observer-Controller Networks

In this paper we provide a set of stability conditions for linear time-invariant networked control systems with arbitrary topology, using a Lyapunov direct approach. We then use these stability conditions to provide a novel low-complexity algorithm for the design of a sparse observer-based control network. We employ distributed observers by employing the output of other nodes to improve the stability of each observer dynamics. To avoid unbounded growth of controller and observer gains, we impose bounds on their norms. The effects of relaxation of these bounds is discussed when trying to find the complete decentralization conditions.

On Localization of A Non-Cooperative Target with Non-Coherent Binary Detectors

Localization of a non-cooperative target with binary detectors is considered. A general expression for the Fisher information for estimation of target location and power is developed. This general expression is then used to derive closed-form approximations for the Cramer-Rao bound for the case of non-coherent detectors. Simulations show that the approximations are quite consistent with the exact bounds.

Harvesting Resource Allocation in Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks

Considering an energy harvesting sensor network, the overall probability of event loss is derived. Based on this result, a variety of harvesting resource allocation schemes (sizing the energy storages and the harvesting devices, under a total cost constraint) are provided. Their performances are verified and compared through simulations.

Synchronization Probability in Large Random Networks

In a generalized framework, where multi-state and inter-state linkages are allowed, we derive a sufficient condition for the stability of synchronization in a network of chaotic attractors. This condition explicitly relates the network structure and the local and coupling dynamics to synchronization stability. For large Erdös-Rényi networks, the obtained condition is translated into a lower bound on the probability of stability of synchrony. Our results show that the probability of stability quickly increases as the randomness crosses a threshold which for large networks is inversely proportional to the network size.
