State-Based Quantum Simulation: Releasing the Powers of Quantum States and Copies

Quantum computing employs controllable interactions to perform sequences of logical gates and entire algorithms on quantum registers. This paradigm has been widely explored, e.g., for simulating dynamics of manybody systems by decomposing their Hamiltonian evolution in a series of quantum gates. Here, we introduce a method for quantum simulation in which the Hamiltonian is decomposed in terms of states and the resulting evolution is realized by only controlled-swap gates and measurements applied on a set of auxiliary systems whose quantum states define the system dynamics. These auxiliary systems can be identically prepared in an arbitrary number of copies of known states at any intermediate time. This parametrization of the quantum simulation goes beyond traditional gate-based methods and permits simulation of, e.g., state-dependent (nonlinear) Hamiltonians and open quantum systems. We show how classical nonlinear and time-delayed ordinary differential equations can be simulated with the state-based method, and how a nonlinear variant of shortcut to adiabaticity permits adiabatic quantum computation, preparation of eigenstates, and solution of optimization tasks.

Does Quantum Mechanics Breed Larger, More Intricate Quantum Theories? The Case for Experience-Centric Quantum Theory and the Interactome of Quantum Theories

We pose and address the radical question that whether quantum mechanics, known for its firm internal structure and enormous empirical success, carries in itself the genome of larger quantum theories which have higher internal intricacies and phenomenological versatilities. That is, on the basic level of closed quantum systems and regardless of interpretational aspects, whether standard quantum theory (SQT) harbors quantum theories with context-based deformed principles or structures, having definite predictive power within broader scopes. We answer the question in affirmative following complementary evidence and reasoning arising from quantum-computation-based quantum simulation and fundamental, general, abstract rationales in the frameworks of information theory, fundamental or functional emergence, and participatory agency. In this light, as we show, one is led to the recently proposed experience-centric quantum theory (ECQT), which is a larger and richer theory of quantum behaviors with drastically generalized quantum dynamics. ECQT allows the quantum information of the closed quantum system's developed state history to continually contribute to defining manybody interactions, Hamiltonians, and even internal elements and ``particles'' of the total system. Hence the unitary evolutions are continually impacted and become guidable by the agent-system's experience. The intrinsic interplay of unitarity and non-Markovianity in ECQT brings about a host of diverse behavioral phases, which concurrently infuse closed and open quantum system characteristics and even surpasses the theory of open systems in SQT. In the broader perspective, an upshot of our investigation is the existence of the quantum interactome--the interactive landscape of all coexisting, independent context-based quantum theories which emerge from inferential participatory agencies--and its predictive phenomenological utility.

Unitary Evolutions Sourced By Interacting Quantum Memories: Closed Quantum Systems Directing Themselves Using Their State Histories

We propose, formulate and examine novel quantum systems and behavioral phases in which momentary choices of the system's memories interact in order to source the internal interactions and unitary time evolutions of the system. In a closed system of the kind, the unitary evolution operator is updated, moment by moment, by being remade out of the system's `experience', that is, its quantum state history. The `Quantum Memory Made' Hamiltonians (QMM-Hs) which generate these unitary evolutions are Hermitian nonlocal-in-time operators composed of arbitrarily-chosen past-until-present density operators of the closed system or its arbitrary subsystems. The time evolutions of the kind are described by novel nonlocal nonlinear von Neumann and Schrödinger equations. We establish that nontrivial Purely-QMM unitary evolutions are `Robustly Non-Markovian', meaning that the maximum temporal distances between the chosen quantum memories must exceed finite lower bounds which are set by the interaction couplings. After general formulation and considerations, we focus on the sufficiently-involved task of obtaining and classifying behavioral phases of one-qubit pure-state evolutions generated by first-to-third order polynomial QMM-Hs made out of one, two and three quantum memories. The behavioral attractors resulted from QMM-Hs are characterized and classified using QMM two-point-function observables as the natural probes, upon combining analytical methods with extensive numerical analyses. The QMM phase diagrams are shown to be outstandingly rich, having diverse classes of unprecedented unitary evolutions with physically remarkable behaviors. Moreover, we show that QMM interactions cause novel purely-internal dynamical phase transitions. Finally, we suggest independent fundamental and applied domains where the proposed `Experience Centric' Unitary Evolutions can be applied natuarlly and advantageously.

Planar Black Holes in Holographic Axion Gravity: Islands, Page Times, and Scrambling Times

The present work investigates the entanglement entropies of the Hawking radiations, the Page times, and the scrambling times, for the eternal planar black holes in the holographic axion gravity. The solutions correspond to a new class of charged black holes, because the boundary diffeomorphism is broken due to the graviton mass induced by the axion fields in the bulk. The information theoretical aspects of these black hole solutions is determined upon applying the island rule for the entanglement entropy. Like non-extremal charged black holes, the radiation entropy grows linearly in the no-island configurations, while is saturated at late times by asymptotic values set by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the island configurations, with the boundary being located slightly outside the outer horizon. In particular, for the extremal black planes of holographic axion gravity, we find that: (a) the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation is ill-defined at the early times when the island is absent; (b) it tends to a distinctive constant at the late times; (c) the late-time location of the island is indeed universal. Moreover, we investigate how the Page time is affected by the holographic massive gravity deformation. For neutral solutions at the small deformation parameter, and for charged solutions with almost-extremal deformation parameter, we find that the Page transition happens at earlier times.

HoloQuantum HyperNetwork Theory

The fundamental, general, kinematically-and-dynamically complete quantum many body theory of the entirely-quantized HyperNetworks, namely HoloQuantum HyperNetwork Theory, `M', is axiomatically defined and formulated out of a unique system of nine principles. HoloQuantum HyperNetworks are all the quantum states of a purely-information-theoretic (0+1) dimensional closed quantum many body system of the abstract qubits of the `absences-or-presences' endowed with a complete distinctive set of abstract many-body interactions among them. All the many-body interactions and the complete total Hamiltonian of M are uniquely obtained upon realizing the kinematical-and-dynamical quantum-hypergraphical well-definedness by all the `cascade operators', the quantum-hypergraphical isomorphisms, the global-phase U(1) redundancies of the multi-qubit states, the minimally-broken equal treatment of the abstract qubits, the maximal randomness, and `covariant completeness'. Mathematically, HoloQuantum HyperNetworks formulate in completeness all possible unitarily-evolving quantum superpositions of all the arbitrarily-chosen hypergraphs. Physically, HoloQuantum HyperNetworks formulate all the dynamical purely-information-theoretic states of every realizable quantum many body system of the arbitrarily-chosen quantum objects and their arbitrarily-chosen quantum relations. Being so, HoloQuantuam HyperNetwork Theory, M, is proposed as the fundamental, complete and covariant `it-from-qubit' theory of `All Quantum Natures'.

Hawking modes and the optimal disperser : Holographic lessons from the observer's causal-patch unitarity

Based on an observer-centric methodology, we pinpoint the basic origin of the spectral Planckianity of the asymptotic Hawking modes in the conventional treatments of the evaporating horizons. By considering an observer who analyzes a causal horizon in a generic spacetime, we first clarify how the asymptotic Planckian spectrum is imposed on the exponentially redshifted Hawking modes through a geometric dispersion mechanism developed by a semiclassical environment which is composed by all the modes that build up the curvature of the causal patch of the asymptotic observer. We also discuss the actual microscopic phenomenon of the Hawking evaporation of generic causal horizons. Our quantum description is based on a novel holographic scheme of gravitational open quantum systems in which the degrees of freedom that build up the curvature of the observer's causal patch interact with the radiated Hawking modes, initially as environmental quanta, and after a crossover time, as quantum defects. Planckian dispersion of the modes would only be developed in the strict thermodynamic limit of this quantum environment, called optimal disperser, which is nevertheless avoided holographically. Finally, we outline and characterize how our microscopic formulation of the observer-centric holography, beyond the AdS/CFT examples and for generic causal patches, does realize the information-theoretic processing of unitarity.

Electron stars for holographic metallic criticality

We refer to the ground state of a gravitating, charged ideal fluid of fermions held at a finite chemical potential as an `electron star'. In a holographic setting, electron stars are candidate gravity duals for strongly interacting finite fermion density systems. We show how electron stars develop an emergent Lifshitz scaling at low energies. This IR scaling region is a consequence of the two way interaction between emergent quantum critical bosonic modes and the finite density of fermions. By integrating from the IR region to an asymptotically AdS_4 spacetime, we compute basic properties of the electron stars, including their electrical conductivity. We emphasize the challenge of connecting UV and IR physics in strongly interacting finite density systems.

Holographically smeared Fermi surface: Quantum oscillations and Luttinger count in electron stars

We apply a small magnetic field to strongly interacting matter with a gravity dual description as an electron star. These systems are both metallic and quantum critical at low energies. The resulting quantum oscillations are shown to be of the Kosevich-Lifshitz form characteristic of Fermi liquid theory. It is seen that only fermions at a single radius in the electron star contribute to the oscillations. We proceed to show that the Fermi surface area extracted from the quantum oscillations does not obey the simplest statement of the Luttinger theorem, that is, it is not universally proportional to the total charge density. It follows that our system is a non-Fermi liquid that nonetheless exhibits Kosevich-Lifshitz quantum oscillations. We explain how the Luttinger count is recovered via a field theoretic description involving a continuum of `smeared' fermionic excitations.

The Point of E_8 in F-theory GUTs

We show that in F-theory GUTs, a natural explanation of flavor hierarchies in the quark and lepton sector requires a single point of E_8 enhancement in the internal geometry, from which all Yukawa couplings originate. The monodromy group acting on the seven-brane configuration plays a key role in this analysis. Moreover, the E_8 structure automatically leads to the existence of the additional fields and interactions needed for minimal gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking,__and almost nothing else__. Surprisingly, we find that in all but one Dirac neutrino scenario the messenger fields in the gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking sector transform as vector-like pairs in the 10 + 10* of SU(5). We also classify dark matter candidates available from this enhancement point, and rule out both annihilating and decaying dark matter scenarios as explanations for the recent experiments PAMELA, ATIC and FERMI. In F-theory GUT models, a 10-100 MeV mass gravitino remains as the prime candidate for dark matter, thus suggesting an astrophysical origin for recent experimental signals.

Cosmology of F-theory GUTs

In this paper we study the interplay between the recently proposed F-theory GUTs and cosmology. Despite the fact that the parameter range for F-theory GUT models is very narrow, we find that F-theory GUTs beautifully satisfy most cosmological constraints without any further restrictions. The viability of the scenario hinges on the interplay between various components of the axion supermultiplet, which in F-theory GUTs is also responsible for breaking supersymmetry. In these models, the gravitino is the LSP and develops a mass by eating the axino mode. The radial component of the axion supermultiplet known as the saxion typically begins to oscillate in the early Universe, eventually coming to dominate the energy density. Its decay reheats the Universe to a temperature of ~ 1 GeV, igniting BBN and diluting all thermal relics such as the gravitino by a factor of ~ 10^(-4) - 10^(-5) such that gravitinos contribute a sizable component of the dark matter. In certain cases, non-thermally produced relics such as the axion, or gravitinos generated from the decay of the saxion can also contribute to the abundance of dark matter. Remarkably enough, this cosmological scenario turns out to be independent of the initial reheating temperature of the Universe. This is due to the fact that the initial oscillation temperature of the saxion coincides with the freeze out temperature for gravitinos in F-theory GUTs. We also find that saxion dilution is compatible with generating the desired baryon asymmetry from standard leptogenesis. Finally, the gravitino mass range in F-theory GUTs is 10-100 MeV, which interestingly coincides with the window of values required for the decay of the NLSP to solve the problem of Li(7) over-production.

Black Holes and Large Order Quantum Geometry

We study five-dimensional black holes obtained by compactifying M theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Recent progress in solving topological string theory on compact, one-parameter models allows us to test numerically various conjectures about these black holes. We give convincing evidence that a microscopic description based on Gopakumar-Vafa invariants accounts correctly for their macroscopic entropy, and we check that highly nontrivial cancellations -which seem necessary to resolve the so-called entropy enigma in the OSV conjecture- do in fact occur. We also study analytically small 5d black holes obtained by wrapping M2 branes in the fiber of K3 fibrations. By using heterotic/type II duality we obtain exact formulae for the microscopic degeneracies in various geometries, and we compute their asymptotic expansion for large charges.

Critical formation of trapped surfaces in the collision of gravitational shock waves

We study the formation of marginally trapped surfaces in the head-on collision of two shock waves both in anti-de Sitter and Minkowski space-time in various dimensions as a function of the spread of the energy density in transverse space. For D=4 and D=5 it is shown that there exists a critical value of this spread above which no solution to the trapped surface equation is found. In four dimensions the trapped surface at criticality has a finite size, whereas in five the critical size vanishes. In both cases we find scaling relations characterized by critical exponents. Finally, when D>5 there is always a solution to the trapped surface equation for any transverse spread.

Critical gravitational collapse: towards a holographic understanding of the Regge region

We study the possible holographic connection between the Regge limit in QCD and critical gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid in higher dimensions. We begin by analyzing the problem of critical gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid in any number of dimensions and numerically compute the associated Choptuik exponent in d=5, 6 and 7 for a range of values of the speed of sound of the fluid. Using continuous self-similarity as guiding principle, a holographic correspondence between this process and the phenomenon of parton saturation in high-energy scattering in QCD is proposed. This holographic connection relates strong gravitational physics in the bulk with (nonsupersymmetric) QCD at weak coupling in four dimensions.

Partition function of non-supersymmetric black holes in the supergravity limit

In this note, we propose the free energy of general \emph{non-supersymmetric} black hole attractors arising in type IIA(B) superstrings on 3-fold Calabi-Yau, in the supergravity limit. This, by definition, differs from its counterpart BPS free energy by a factor of $4 $. Correspondingly, a mixed ensemble for these black holes is proposed.

Minimal redefinition of the OSV ensemble

In the interesting conjecture, Z_{BH} = |Z_{top}|^2, proposed by Ooguri, Strominger and Vafa (OSV), the black hole ensemble is a mixed ensemble and the resulting degeneracy of states, as obtained from the ensemble inverse-Laplace integration, suffers from prefactors which do not respect the electric-magnetic duality. One idea to overcome this deficiency, as claimed recently, is imposing nontrivial measures for the ensemble sum. We address this problem and upon a redefinition of the OSV ensemble whose variables are as numerous as the electric potentials, show that for restoring the symmetry no non-Euclidean measure is needful. In detail, we rewrite the OSV free energy as a function of new variables which are combinations of the electric-potentials and the black hole charges. Subsequently the Legendre transformation which bridges between the entropy and the black hole free energy in terms of these variables, points to a generalized ensemble. In this context, we will consider all the cases of relevance: small and large black holes, with or without D_6-brane charge. For the case of vanishing D_6-brane charge, the new ensemble is pure canonical and the electric-magnetic duality is restored exactly, leading to proper results for the black hole degeneracy of states. For more general cases, the construction still works well as far as the violation of the duality by the corresponding OSV result is restricted to a prefactor. In a concrete example we shall show that for black holes with non-vanishing D_6-brane charge, there are cases where the duality violation goes beyond this restriction, thus imposing non-trivial measures is incapable of restoring the duality. This observation signals for a deeper modification in the OSV proposal.
