Search or Chat? Comparing How We Learn About Debated Topics

As large language models (LLMs) become more integrated into everyday information platforms, chat-based systems are emerging as a popular alternative to traditional web searches, especially for informational search and informal learning tasks. Despite this shift, little is known about how different tools affect learning outcomes. Our work aims to improve the understanding of how chat-based information access supports and impacts learning performance in informal learning settings. In this paper, we present the results of a crowdsourcing user study (N = 194) that compares learning about debated topics using a traditional search interface versus an LLM-powered chat interface. Through our analysis of learning outcomes, user characteristics, and interaction patterns, we found no significant differences in user learning gain or critical reflection on our study tasks. Our observations from the analysis of further exploratory variables suggest that, in the context of longstanding debated topics, user characteristics such as their attitude strength and level of intellectual humility might be more important in shaping immediate learning outcomes than the information access tool.

From SERPs to Sound: How Search Engine Result Pages and AI-generated Podcasts Interact to Influence User Attitudes on Controversial Topics

Compared to search engine result pages (SERPs), AI-generated podcasts represent a relatively new and relatively more passive modality of information consumption, delivering narratives in a naturally engaging format. As these two media increasingly converge in everyday information-seeking behavior, it is essential to explore how their interaction influences user attitudes, particularly in contexts involving controversial, value-laden, and often debated topics. Addressing this need, we aim to understand how information mediums of present-day SERPs and AI-generated podcasts interact to shape the opinions of users. To this end, through a controlled user study (N=483), we investigated user attitudinal effects of consuming information via SERPs and AI-generated podcasts, focusing on how the sequence and modality of exposure shape user opinions. A majority of users in our study corresponded to attitude change outcomes, and we found an effect of sequence on attitude change. Our results further revealed a role of viewpoint bias and the degree of topic controversiality in shaping attitude change, although we found no effect of individual moderators.

A Research Vision for Web Search on Emerging Topics

We regularly encounter information on novel, emerging topics for which the body of knowledge is still evolving, which can be linked, for instance, to current events. A primary way to learn more about such topics is through web search. However, information on emerging topics is sparse and evolves dynamically as knowledge grows, making it uncertain and variable in quality and trustworthiness and prone to deliberate or accidental manipulation, misinformation, and bias. In this paper, we outline a research vision towards search systems and interfaces that support effective knowledge acquisition, awareness of the dynamic nature of topics, and responsible opinion formation among people searching the web for information on emerging topics. To realize this vision, we propose three overarching research questions, aimed at understanding the status quo, determining requirements of systems aligned with our vision, and building these systems. For each of the three questions, we highlight relevant literature, including pointers on how they could be addressed. Lastly, we discuss the challenges that will potentially arise in pursuing the proposed vision.

Fairness in Agreement With European Values: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on AI Regulation

With increasing digitalization, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming ubiquitous. AI-based systems to identify, optimize, automate, and scale solutions to complex economic and societal problems are being proposed and implemented. This has motivated regulation efforts, including the Proposal of an EU AI Act. This interdisciplinary position paper considers various concerns surrounding fairness and discrimination in AI, and discusses how AI regulations address them, focusing on (but not limited to) the Proposal. We first look at AI and fairness through the lenses of law, (AI) industry, sociotechnology, and (moral) philosophy, and present various perspectives. Then, we map these perspectives along three axes of interests: (i) Standardization vs. Localization, (ii) Utilitarianism vs. Egalitarianism, and (iii) Consequential vs. Deontological ethics which leads us to identify a pattern of common arguments and tensions between these axes. Positioning the discussion within the axes of interest and with a focus on reconciling the key tensions, we identify and propose the roles AI Regulation should take to make the endeavor of the AI Act a success in terms of AI fairness concerns.
