From Loop Groups to 2-Groups

We describe an interesting relation between Lie 2-algebras, the Kac-Moody central extensions of loop groups, and the group $\mathrm{String}(n)$. A Lie 2-algebra is a categorified version of a Lie algebra where the Jacobi identity holds up to a natural isomorphism called the "Jacobiator". Similarly, a Lie 2-group is a categorified version of a Lie group. If $G$ is a simply-connected compact simple Lie group, there is a 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras $\mathfrak{g}_k$ each having $\mathrm{Lie}(G)$ as its Lie algebra of objects, but with a Jacobiator built from the canonical 3-form on $G$. There appears to be no Lie 2-group having $\mathfrak{g}_k$ as its Lie 2-algebra, except when $k = 0$. Here, however, we construct for integral k an infinite-dimensional Lie 2-group whose Lie 2-algebra is equivalent to $\mathfrak{g}_k$. The objects of this 2-group are based paths in $G$, while the automorphisms of any object form the level-$k$ Kac-Moody central extension of the loop group of $G$. This 2-group is closely related to the $k$th power of the canonical gerbe over $G$. Its nerve gives a topological group that is an extension of $G$ by $K(\mathbb{Z},2)$. When $k = \pm 1$, this topological group can also be obtained by killing the third homotopy group of $G$. Thus, when $G = \mathrm{Spin}(n)$, it is none other than $\mathrm{String}(n)$.

Quandles with orbit series conditions

We introduce the notion of an orbit series in a quandle. Using this notion we define four families of quandles based on finiteness conditions on their orbit series. Intuitively, the classes tOS and tOSn correspond to finitary compositions of trivial quandles while the classes OS and OSn correspond to finitary compositions of connected quandles. We study properties of these four families of quandles and explore their relationships with several previously studied families of quandles: reductive, n-reductive, locally reductive, n-locally reductive, and solvable quandles.

From biquandle structures to Hom-biquandles

We investigate the relationship between the quandle and biquandle coloring invariant and obtain an enhancement of the quandle and biquandle coloring invariants using biquandle structures. We also continue the study of biquandle homomorphisms into a medial biquandle begun by the second author et al., finding biquandle analogs of results about Hom-quandles. We describe the biquandle structure of the Hom-biquandle, and consider the relationship between the Hom-quandle and Hom-biquandle.

On the Structure of Hom Quandles

We continue the study of the quandle of homomorphisms into a medial quandle begun in Crans and Nelson. We show that it suffices to consider only medial source quandles, and therefore the structure theorem of Jedlicka et al. provides a characterization of the Hom quandle. In the particular case when the target is 2-reductive this characterization takes on a simple form that makes it easy to count and determine the structure of the Hom quandle.

Homology of Associative Shelves

Homology theories for associative algebraic structures are well established and have been studied for a long time. More recently, homology theories for self-distributive algebraic structures motivated by knot theory, such as quandles and their relatives, have been developed and investigated. In this paper, we study associative self-distributive algebraic structures and their one-term and two-term (rack) homology groups.

Crossed modules of racks

We generalize the notion of a crossed module of groups to that of a crossed module of racks. We investigate the relation to categorified racks, namely strict 2-racks, and trunk-like objects in the category of racks, generalizing the relation between crossed modules of groups and strict 2-groups. Then we explore topological applications. We show that by applying the rack-space functor, a crossed module of racks gives rise to a covering. Our main result shows how the fundamental racks associated to links upstairs and downstairs in a covering fit together to form a crossed module of racks.

Hom Quandles

If $A$ is an abelian quandle and $Q$ is a quandle, the hom set $\mathrm{Hom}(Q,A)$ of quandle homomorphisms from $Q$ to $A$ has a natural quandle structure. We exploit this fact to enhance the quandle counting invariant, providing an example of links with the same counting invariant values but distinguished by the hom quandle structure. We generalize the result to the case of biquandles, collect observations and results about abelian quandles and the hom quandle, and show that the category of abelian quandles is symmetric monoidal closed.

Torsion in one-term distributive homology

The one-term distributive homology was introduced by J.H.Przytycki as an atomic replacement of rack and quandle homology, which was first introduced and developed by R.Fenn, C.Rourke and B.Sanderson, and J.S.Carter, S.Kamada and M.Saito. This homology was initially suspected to be torsion-free, but we show in this paper that the one-term homology of a finite spindle can have torsion. We carefully analyze spindles of block decomposition of type (n,1) and introduce various techniques to compute their homology precisely. In addition, we show that any finite group can appear as the torsion subgroup of the first homology of some finite spindle. Finally, we show that if a shelf satisfies a certain, rather general, condition then the one-term homology is trivial.

Polynomial knot and link invariants from the virtual biquandle

The Alexander biquandle of a virtual knot or link is a module over a 2-variable Laurent polynomial ring which is an invariant of virtual knots and links. The elementary ideals of this module are then invariants of virtual isotopy which determine both the generalized Alexander polynomial (also known as the Sawollek polynomial) for virtual knots and the classical Alexander polynomial for classical knots. For a fixed monomial ordering $<$, the Gröbner bases for these ideals are computable, comparable invariants which fully determine the elementary ideals and which generalize and unify the classical and generalized Alexander polynomials. We provide examples to illustrate the usefulness of these invariants and propose questions for future work.

Enhancements of the rack counting invariant via N-reduced dynamical cocycles

We introduce the notion of N-reduced dynamical cocycles and use these objects to define enhancements of the rack counting invariant for classical and virtual knots and links. We provide examples to show that the new invariants are not determined by the rack counting invariant, the Jones polynomial or the generalized Alexander polynomial.

Higher-Dimensional Algebra VI: Lie 2-Algebras

The theory of Lie algebras can be categorified starting from a new notion of "2-vector space", which we define as an internal category in Vect. There is a 2-category 2Vect having these 2-vector spaces as objects, "linear functors" as morphisms and "linear natural transformations" as 2-morphisms. We define a "semistrict Lie 2-algebra" to be a 2-vector space L equipped with a skew-symmetric bilinear functor satisfying the Jacobi identity up to a completely antisymmetric trilinear natural transformation called the "Jacobiator", which in turn must satisfy a certain law of its own. This law is closely related to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation, and indeed we prove that any semistrict Lie 2-algebra gives a solution of this equation, just as any Lie algebra gives a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. We construct a 2-category of semistrict Lie 2-algebras and prove that it is 2-equivalent to the 2-category of 2-term L-infinity algebras in the sense of Stasheff. We also study strict and skeletal Lie 2-algebras, obtaining the former from strict Lie 2-groups and using the latter to classify Lie 2-algebras in terms of 3rd cohomology classes in Lie algebra cohomology. This classification allows us to construct for any finite-dimensional Lie algebra g a canonical 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras g_hbar which reduces to g at hbar = 0. These are closely related to the 2-groups G_hbar constructed in a companion paper.

Musical Actions of Dihedral Groups

The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. We illustrate both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are {\it dual}. Both actions and their duality have been used to analyze works of music as diverse as Hindemith and the Beatles.

Cohomology of Frobenius Algebras and the Yang-Baxter Equation

A cohomology theory for multiplications and comultiplications of Frobenius algebras is developed in low dimensions in analogy with Hochschild cohomology of bialgebras based on deformation theory. Concrete computations are provided for key examples. Skein theoretic constructions give rise to solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation using multiplications and comultiplications of Frobenius algebras, and 2-cocycles are used to obtain deformations of R-matrices thus obtained.

Cohomology of the adjoint of Hopf algebras

A cohomology theory of the adjoint of Hopf algebras, via deformations, is presented by means of diagrammatic techniques. Explicit calculations are provided in the cases of group algebras, function algebras on groups, and the bosonization of the super line. As applications, solutions to the YBE are given and quandle cocycles are constructed from groupoid cocycles.

Exotic Statistics for Strings in 4d BF Theory

After a review of exotic statistics for point particles in 3d BF theory, and especially 3d quantum gravity, we show that string-like defects in 4d BF theory obey exotic statistics governed by the 'loop braid group'. This group has a set of generators that switch two strings just as one would normally switch point particles, but also a set of generators that switch two strings by passing one through the other. The first set generates a copy of the symmetric group, while the second generates a copy of the braid group. Thanks to recent work of Xiao-Song Lin, we can give a presentation of the whole loop braid group, which turns out to be isomorphic to the 'braid permutation group' of Fenn, Rimanyi and Rourke. In the context 4d BF theory this group naturally acts on the moduli space of flat G-bundles on the complement of a collection of unlinked unknotted circles in R^3. When G is unimodular, this gives a unitary representation of the loop braid group. We also discuss 'quandle field theory', in which the gauge group G is replaced by a quandle.

Lie 2-Algebras

We categorify the theory of Lie algebras beginning with a new notion of categorified vector space, or `2-vector space', which we define as an internal category in Vect, the category of vector spaces. We then define a `semistrict Lie 2-algebra' to be a 2-vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric bilinear functor satisfying the Jacobi identity up to a completely antisymmetric trilinear natural transformation called the `Jacobiator', which in turn must satisfy a certain law of its own. Much of the content of this first chapter has already appeared in a separate paper coauthored with John Baez, Higher Dimensional Algebra VI: Lie 2-algebras. We then explore the relationship between Lie algebras and algebraic structures called `quandles'. A quandle is a set equipped with two binary operations satisfying axioms that capture the essential properties of the operations of conjugation in a group and algebraically encode the three Reidemeister moves. Indeed, we describe the relation to groups and show that quandles give invariants of braids. We further show that both Lie algebras and quandles give solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation, and explain how conjugation plays a prominent role in the both the theories of Lie algebras and quandles. Inspired by these commonalities, we provide a novel, conceptual passage from Lie groups to Lie algebras using the language of quandles. Moreover, we propose relationships between higher Lie theory and higher-dimensional braid theory. We conclude with evidence of this connection by proving that any semistrict Lie 2-algebra gives a solution of the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation, which is the higher-dimensional analog of the Yang--Baxter equation.
