The Distances of the Magellanic Clouds

The present status of our knowledge of the distances to the Magellanic Clouds is evaluated from a post-Hipparcos perspective. After a brief summary of the effects of structure, reddening, age and metallicity, the primary distance indicators for the Large Magellanic Cloud are reviewed: The SN 1987A ring, Cepheids, RR Lyraes, Mira variables, and Eclipsing Binaries. Distances derived via these methods are weighted and combined to produce final "best" estimates for the Magellanic Clouds distance moduli.

CCD Photometry of Galactic Globular Clusters. IV. The NGC 1851 RR Lyraes

The variable star population of the galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 (C0512-400) has been studied by CCD photometry, from observations made in the B, V, and I bands during 1993-4. Light curves are presented for 29 variables, seven of which are new discoveries. The behavior of the RR lyraes in the period-temperature diagram appears normal when compared to clusters which bracket the NGC 1851 metallicity. Reddening and metallicity are re-evaluated, with no compelling evidence to change from accepted values. Photometry for stars within an annulus with radii 80 and 260 arcsec agrees to better than 0.02 mag in all colors with extensive earlier photometry, to at least V = 18.5. Instability strip boundary positions for several clusters shows a trend for the red boundary to move to redder colors as the metallicity increases.

Optical Light Curves of the Type Ia Supernovae 1990N and 1991T

We present UBVRI light curves for the bright Type Ia supernovae SN 1990N in NGC 4639 and SN 1991T in NGC 4527 based on photometry gathered in the course of the Calan/Tololo supernova program. Both objects have well-sampled light curves starting several days before maximum light and spanning well through the exponential tail. These data supercede the preliminary photometry published by Leibundgut et al (1991) and Phillips et al (1992). The host galaxies for these supernovae have (or will have) accurate distances based on the Cepheid period-luminosity relationship. The photometric data in this paper provide template curves for the study of general population of Type Ia supernova and accurate photometric indices needed for the Cepheid-supernova distance scale.

The CTIO Prime Focus CCD: System Characteristics from 1982-1988

The CTIO Prime Focus CCD instrument with an RCA CCD was in operation at the CTIO 4-m telescope for six years between 1982-1988. A large body of literature has been published based on CCD images taken with this instrument. We review the general properties of the now-retired PFCCD system to aid astronomers in the interpretation of the photometric data in the literature.
