The congruent number descent of Komotu, Watanabe and Wada

We present an elementary exposition of the descent method used by Komoto, Watanabe and Wada to show $N=42553$ is a congruent number. We generalize to $N=7p$ with $p$ prime, and try to present the method such that an amateur could understand and perform their own calculations.

On Parametric Spaces of Bicentric Quadrilaterals

In Euclidean geometry, a bicentric quadrilateral is a convex quadrilateral that has both a circumcircle passing through the four vertices and an incircle having the four sides as tangents. Consider a bicentric quadrilateral with rational sides. We discuss the problem of finding such quadrilaterals where the ratio of the radii of the circumcircle and incircle is rational. We show that this problem can be formulated in terms of a family of elliptic curves given by $E_a:y^2=x^3+(a^4-4a^3-2a^2-4a+1)x^2+16a^4x$ which have, in general, \(\mathbb Z/8\mathbb Z\), and in rare cases \(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z\times\mathbb Z/8\mathbb Z\) as torsion subgroups. We show the existence of infinitely many elliptic curves $E_a$ of rank at least two with torsion subgroup $\mathbb Z/8\mathbb Z$, parameterized by the points of an elliptic curve of rank at least one, and give five particular examples of rank $5$. We, also, show the existence of a subfamily of $E_a$ whose torsion subgroup is $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z\times\mathbb Z/8\mathbb Z$.

"Nice" Rational Functions

We consider simple rational functions $R_{mn}(x)=P_m(x)/Q_n(x)$, with $P_m$ and $Q_n$ polynomials of degree $m$ and $n$ respectively. We look for "nice" functions, which we define to be ones where as many as possible of the roots, poles, critical points and (possibly) points of inflexion are integer or, at worst, rational.

New Solutions of $d=2x^3+y^3+z^3$

We discuss finding large integer solutions of $d=2x^3+y^3+z^3$ by using Elsenhans and Jahnel's adaptation of Elkies' LLL-reduction method. We find 28 first solutions for $|d|<10000$.

Perfect Quadrilateral Right Prisms

We consider right prisms with horizontal quadrilateral bases and tops, and vertical rectangular sides. We look for examples where all the edges, face diagonals and space diagonals are integers. We find examples when the base is an isosceles trapezium and a parallelogram, but no solution for a kite or rhombus.

On Sets of Integers where Each Pair Sums to a Square

We discuss the problem of finding distinct integer sets $\{x_1,x_2,...,x_n\}$ where each sum $x_i+x_j, i \ne j$ is a square, and $n \le 7$. We confirm minimal results of Lagrange and Nicolas for $n=5$ and for the related problem with triples. We provide new solution sets for $n=6$ to add to the single known set. This provides new information for problem D15 in Guy's {\it Unsolved Problems in Number Theory}

Square Eulerian Quadruples

We consider the problem of finding 4 rational squares, such that the product of any two plus the sum of the same two always gives a square. We give some historical background and exhibit one such quadruple.

Integer Triangles with R/r=N

We consider the problem of finding integer-sided triangles with R/r an integer, where R and r are the radii of the circumcircle and incircle respectively. We show that such triangles are relatively rare.
