Electroencephalography Signal Analysis for Human Activities Classification: A Solution Based on Machine Learning and Motor Imagery

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a fundamental tool for understanding the brain's electrical activity related to human motor activities. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) uses such electrical activity to develop assistive technologies, especially those directed at people with physical disabilities. However, extracting signal features and patterns is still complex, sometimes delegated to machine learning (ML) algorithms. Therefore, this work aims to develop a ML based on the Random Forest algorithm to classify EEG signals from subjects performing real and imagery motor activities. The interpretation and correct classification of EEG signals allow the development of tools controlled by cognitive processes. We evaluated our ML Random Forest algorithm using a consumer and a research-grade EEG system. Random Forest efficiently distinguishes imagery and real activities and defines the related body part, even with consumer-grade EEG. However, interpersonal variability of the EEG signals negatively affects the classification process.

Controlling epidemic diseases based only on social distancing level

The World Health Organization (WHO) made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. To the COVID-19 outbreak, there is no vaccination and no treatment. The only way to control the COVID-19 outbreak is sustained physical distancing. In this work, a simple control law was proposed to keep the infected individuals during the COVID-19 outbreak below the desired number. The proposed control law keeps the value of infected individuals controlled only adjusting the social distancing level. The stability analysis of the proposed control law is done and the uncertainties in the parameters were considered. A version of the proposed controller to daily update was developed. This is a very simple approach to the developed control law and can be calculated in a spreadsheet. In the end, numerical simulations were done to show the behavior of the number of infected individuals during an epidemic disease when the proposed control law is used to adjust the social distancing level.

Probabilistic Interpretation for Correntropy with Complex Data

Recent studies have demonstrated that correntropy is an efficient tool for analyzing higher-order statistical moments in nonGaussian noise environments. Although it has been used with complex data, some adaptations were then necessary without deriving a generic form so that similarities between complex random variables can be aggregated. This paper presents a novel probabilistic interpretation for correntropy using complex-valued data called complex correntropy. An analytical recursive solution for the maximum complex correntropy criterion (MCCC) is introduced as based on the fixedpoint solution. This technique is applied to a simple system identification case study, as the results demonstrate prominent advantages regarding the proposed cost function if compared to the complex recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm. By using such probabilistic interpretation, correntropy can be applied to solve several problems involving complex data in a more straightforward way.
