Magnetodielectric coupling in a Ru-based 6H-perovskite, Ba3NdRu2O9

A large spin-orbit coupling is a way to control strong magnetodielectric (MD) coupling in a higher d-orbital materials. However reports are rare on such compounds due to often leaky conductive behavior. Here, we demonstrate MD coupling in a Ru-based 6H-perovskite system, Ba3NdRu2O9. The rare-earth ion in a 6H-perovskite makes the system insulating enough to carry out MD investigation. The compound is ferromagnetically ordered below 24 K (TC), followed by another magnetic feature at T~ 17 K (T2). The dielectric constant clearly traces the magnetic ordering, manifesting a peak at the onset of TC, which is suppressed by the application of an external magnetic field (H). The results indicate the presence of MD coupling in this compound, which is further confirmed by the H-dependence of the dielectric constant. Interestingly, a cross-over of the sign of MD coupling is observed at T ~ T2. We conclude that two different mechanism controls the MD coupling which yields positive and negative coupling, respectively. Both mechanisms are competing as a function of temperature and magnetic field. This brings us a step closer to design and control the magnetodielectric effect in 6H-perovskites containing higher d-orbital elements.

Dipolar spin ice states with fast monopole hopping rate in CdEr$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, S)

Excitations in a spin ice behave as magnetic monopoles, and their population and mobility control the dynamics of a spin ice at low temperature. CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ is reported to have the Pauling entropy characteristic of a spin ice, but its dynamics are three-orders of magnitude faster than the canonical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. In this letter we use diffuse neutron scattering to show that both CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ and CdEr$_2$S$_4$ support a dipolar spin ice state -- the host phase for a Coulomb gas of emergent magnetic monopoles. These Coulomb gases have similar parameters to that in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, i.e. dilute and uncorrelated, so cannot provide three-orders faster dynamics through a larger monopole population alone. We investigate the monopole dynamics using ac susceptometry and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, and verify the crystal electric field Hamiltonian of the Er$^{3+}$ ions using inelastic neutron scattering. A quantitative calculation of the monopole hopping rate using our Coulomb gas and crystal electric field parameters shows that the fast dynamics in CdEr$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, S) are primarily due to much faster monopole hopping. Our work suggests that CdEr$_2$X$_4$ offer the possibility to study alternative spin ice ground states and dynamics, with equilibration possible at much lower temperatures than the rare earth pyrochlore examples.

Frequency dependent polarisation switching in h-ErMnO$_3$

We report an electric-field poling study of the geometric-driven improper ferroelectric h-ErMnO$_3$. From a detailed dielectric analysis we deduce the temperature and frequency dependent range for which single-crystalline h-ErMnO$_3$ exhibits purely intrinsic dielectric behaviour, i.e., free from extrinsic so-called Maxwell-Wagner polarisations that arise, for example, from surface barrier layers. In this regime ferroelectric hysteresis loops as function of frequency, temperature and applied electric fields are measured revealing the theoretically predicted saturation polarisation in the order of 5 - 6 $μ$C/cm$^2$. Special emphasis is put on frequency-dependent polarisation switching, which is explained in terms of domain-wall movement similar to proper ferroelectrics. Controlling the domain walls via electric fields brings us an important step closer to their utilization in domain-wall-based electronics.

Atomic-scale coexistence of short-range magnetic order and superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$

The ground state of the parent compounds of many high temperature superconductors is an antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered phase, where superconductivity emerges when the AFM phase transition is suppressed by doping or application of pressure. This behaviour implies a close relation between the two orders. Understanding the interplay between them promises a better understanding of how the superconducting condensate forms from the AFM ordered background. Here we explore this relation in real space at the atomic scale using low temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) and spectroscopy. We investigate the transition from antiferromagnetically ordered $\mathrm{Fe}_{1+y}\mathrm{Te}$ via the spin glass phase in $\mathrm{Fe}_{1+y}\mathrm{Se}_{0.1}\mathrm{Te}_{0.9}$ to superconducting $\mathrm{Fe}_{1+y}\mathrm{Se}_{0.15}\mathrm{Te}_{0.85}$. In $\mathrm{Fe}_{1+y}\mathrm{Se}_{0.1}\mathrm{Te}_{0.9}$ we observe an atomic-scale coexistence of superconductivity and short-ranged bicollinear antiferromagnetic order.

Experimental Observation of Bethe Strings

Almost one century ago, string states - complex bound states (Wellenkomplexe) of magnetic excitations - have been predicted to exist in one-dimensional quantum magnets and since then become a subject of intensive theoretical study. However, experimental realization and identification of string states in condensed-matter systems remains an unsolved challenge up to date. Here we use high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy to identify string states in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising chain SrCo2V2O8 in strong longitudinal magnetic fields. We observe complex bound states (strings) and fractional magnetic excitations (psinons and antipsinons) in the field-induced critical regime, which are precisely described by the Bethe ansatz. Our study reveals that two-string and three-string states govern the quantum spin dynamics close to the quantum criticality, while the fractional excitations are dominant at low energies, reflecting the antiferromagnetic quantum fluctuations.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Type Scenario in Molecular Spin Liquid $A$Cr$_2$O$_4$

The spin relaxation in chromium spinel oxides $A$Cr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ ($A=$ Mg, Zn, Cd) is investigated in the paramagnetic regime by electron spin resonance (ESR). The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth indicates an unconventional spin-relaxation behavior, similar to spin-spin relaxation in the two-dimensional (2D) chromium-oxide triangular lattice antiferromagnets. The data can be described in terms of a generalized Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type scenario for 2D systems with additional internal symmetries. Based on the characteristic exponents obtained from the evaluation of the ESR linewidth, short-range order with a hidden internal symmetry is suggested.

Anisotropic Exchange in ${\bf LiCu_2O_2}$

We investigate the magnetic properties of the multiferroic quantum-spin system LiCu$_2$O$_2$ by electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements at $X$- and $Q$-band frequencies in a wide temperature range $(T_{\rm N1} \leq T \leq 300$\,K). The observed anisotropies of the $g$ tensor and the ESR linewidth in untwinned single crystals result from the crystal-electric field and from local exchange geometries acting on the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions in the zigzag-ladder like structure of LiCu$_2$O$_2$. Supported by a microscopic analysis of the exchange paths involved, we show that both the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction provide the dominant spin-spin relaxation channels in this material.

Relaxation dynamics of modulated magnetic phases in skyrmion host GaV4S8: an ac magnetic susceptibility study

We report on the slow magnetization dynamics observed upon the magnetic phase transitions of GaV4S8, a multiferroic compound featuring a long-ranged cycloidal magnetic order and a Néel-type skyrmion lattice in a relatively broad temperature range below its Curie temperature. The fundamental difference between GaV4S8 and the chiral helimagnets, wherein the skyrmion phase was first discovered, lies within the polar symmetry of GaV4S8, promoting a cycloidal instead of a helical magnetic order and rendering the magnetic phase diagram essentially different from that in the cubic helimagnets. Our ac magnetic susceptibility study reveals slow relaxation dynamics at the field-driven phase transitions between the cycloidal, skyrmion lattice and field-polarized states. At each phase boundary, the characteristic relaxation times were found to exhibit a strong temperature dependence, starting from the minute range at low temperatures, decreasing to the micro- to millisecond range at higher temperatures.

Characteristics of ferroelectric-ferroelastic domains in N{é}el-type skyrmion host GaV$_4$S$_8$

GaV$_4$S$_8$ is a multiferroic semiconductor hosting N{é}el-type magnetic skyrmions dressed with electric polarization. At T$_s$ = 42K, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition of weakly first-order, from a non-centrosymmetric cubic phase at high temperatures to a polar rhombohedral structure at low temperatures. Below T$_s$, ferroelectric domains are formed with the electric polarization pointing along any of the four $\left< 111 \right>$ axes. Although in this material the size and the shape of the ferroelectric-ferroelastic domains may act as important limiting factors in the formation of the N{é}el-type skyrmion lattice emerging below T$_C$=13\:K, the characteristics of polar domains in GaV$_4$S$_8$ have not been studied yet. Here, we report on the inspection of the local-scale ferroelectric domain distribution in rhombohedral GaV$_4$S$_8$ using low-temperature piezoresponse force microscopy. We observed mechanically and electrically compatible lamellar domain patterns, where the lamellae are aligned parallel to the (100)-type planes with a typical spacing between 100 nm-1.2 $μ$m. We expect that the control of ferroelectric domain size in polar skyrmion hosts can be exploited for the spatial confinement and manupulation of N{é}el-type skyrmions.

Antiferroelectric instability in kagome francisites Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$X (X = Cl, Br)

Density-functional calculations of lattice dynamics and high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction uncover antiferroelectric distortion in the kagome francisite Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl below 115K. Its Br-containing analogue is stable in the room-temperature crystal structure down to at least 10K, although the Br compound is on the verge of a similar antiferroelectric instability and reveals local displacements of Cu and Br atoms. The I-containing compound is stable in its room-temperature structure according to density-functional calculations. We show that the distortion involves cooperative displacements of Cu and Cl atoms, and originates from the optimization of interatomic distances for weakly bonded halogen atoms. The distortion introduces a tangible deformation of the kagome spin lattice and may be responsible for the reduced net magnetization of the Cl compound compared to the Br one. The polar structure of Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl is only slightly higher in energy than the non-polar antiferroelectric structure, but no convincing evidence of its formation could be obtained.

Pressure effect on superconductivity in FeSe0.5Te0.5

Due to the simple layered structure, isostructural FeSe and FeSe0.5Te0.5 are clue compounds for understanding the principal mechanisms of superconductivity in the family of Fe-based superconductors. High-pressure magnetic, structural and Mössbauer studies have been performed on single-crystalline samples of superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 with Tc = 13.5 K. Susceptibility data have revealed a strong increase of Tc up to 19.5 K for pressures up to 1.3 GPa, followed by a plateau in the Tc(p) dependence up to 5.0 GPa. Further pressure increase leads to a disappearance of the superconducting state around 7.0 GPa. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer studies explain this fact by a tetragonal-to-hexagonal structural phase transition. Mössbauer parameters of the non-superconducting high-pressure phase indicate less covalency of Fe-Se bonds. Based on structural and susceptibility data we conclude about a common character of Tc(p) diagrams for both FeSe and FeSe0.5Te0.5 superconductors.

From confined spinons to emergent fermions: Observation of elementary magnetic excitations in a transverse-field Ising chain

We report on spectroscopy study of elementary magnetic excitations in an Ising-like antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and applied transverse magnetic field up to 25 T. An optical as well as an acoustic branch of confined spinons, the elementary excitations at zero field, are identified in the antiferromagnetic phase below the Néel temperature of 5 K and described by a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The confinement can be suppressed by an applied transverse field and a quantum disordered phase is induced at 7 T. In this disordered paramagnetic phase, we observe three emergent fermionic excitations with different transverse-field dependencies. The nature of these modes is clarified by studying spin dynamic structure factor of a 1D transverse-field Heisenberg-Ising (XXZ) model using the method of infinite time evolving block decimation. Our work reveals emergent quantum phenomena and provides a concrete system for testifying theoretical predications of one-dimension quantum spin models.

Spiral spin-liquid and the emergence of a vortex-like state in MnSc$_2$S$_4$

Spirals and helices are common motifs of long-range order in magnetic solids, and they may also be organized into more complex emergent structures such as magnetic skyrmions and vortices. A new type of spiral state, the spiral spin-liquid, in which spins fluctuate collectively as spirals, has recently been predicted to exist. Here, using neutron scattering techniques, we experimentally prove the existence of a spiral spin-liquid in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ by directly observing the 'spiral surface' - a continuous surface of spiral propagation vectors in reciprocal space. We elucidate the multi-step ordering behavior of the spiral spin-liquid, and discover a vortex-like triple-q phase on application of a magnetic field. Our results prove the effectiveness of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Hamiltonian on the diamond lattice as a model for the spiral spin-liquid state in MnSc$_2$S$_4$, and also demonstrate a new way to realize a magnetic vortex lattice.

Evidence for Orbital Order and its Relation to Superconductivity in FeSe0.4Te0.6

The emergence of nematic electronic states accompanied by a structural phase transition is a recurring theme in many correlated electron materials, including the high-temperature copper oxide- and iron-based superconductors. We provide evidence for nematic electronic states in the iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeSe0.4Te0.6 from quasi-particle scattering detected in spectroscopic maps. The symmetry-breaking states persist above Tc into the normal state. We interpret the scattering patterns by comparison with quasi-particle interference patterns obtained from a tight-binding model, accounting for orbital ordering. The relation to superconductivity and the influence on the coherence length are discussed.

Magnetic Excitations in the Multiferroic Néel-type Skyrmion Host GaV$_4$S$_8$

Broadband microwave spectroscopy has been performed on single-crystalline GaV$_4$S$_8$, which exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram including cycloidal, Néel-type skyrmion lattice, as well as field-polarized ferromagnetic phases below 13 K. At zero and small magnetic fields two collective modes are found at 5 and 15 GHz, which are characteristic of the cycloidal state in this easy-axis magnet. In finite fields, entering the skyrmion lattice phase, the spectrum transforms into a multi-mode pattern with absorption peaks near 4, 8, and 15 GHz. The spin excitation spectra in GaV$_4$S$_8$ and their field dependencies are found to be in close relation to those observed in materials with Bloch-type skyrmions. Distinct differences arise from the strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of GaV4S8 not present in so-far known skyrmion hosts.

Raman-Scattering Detection of Nearly Degenerate $s$-Wave and $d$-Wave Pairing Channels in Iron-Based Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ Superconductors

We show that electronic Raman scattering affords a window into the essential properties of the pairing potential $V_{\mathbf{k},\mathbf{k^{\prime}}}$ of iron-based superconductors. In Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ we observe band dependent energy gaps along with excitonic Bardasis-Schrieffer modes characterizing, respectively, the dominant and subdominant pairing channel. The $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry of all excitons allows us to identify the subdominant channel to originate from the interaction between the electron bands. Consequently, the dominant channel driving superconductivity results from the interaction between the electron and hole bands and has the full lattice symmetry. The results in Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ along with earlier ones in Ba(Fe$_{0.939}$Co$_{0.061}$)$_2$As$_2$ highlight the influence of the Fermi surface topology on the pairing interactions.

Interplay between Superconductivity and Magnetism in Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2 under Pressure

High-pressure magnetization, structural and 57Fe Mössbauer studies were performed on superconducting Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2.0 with Tc = 32.4 K. The superconducting transition temperature gradually decreases on increasing pressure up to 5.0 GPa followed by a marked step-like suppression of superconductivity near 6 GPa. No structural phase transition in the Fe vacancy-ordered superstructure is observed in synchrotron XRD studies up to 15.6 GPa, while the Mössbauer spectra above 5 GPa reveal the appearance of a new paramagnetic phase and significant changes in the magnetic and electronic properties of the dominant antiferromagnetic phase, coinciding with the disappearance of superconductivity. These findings underline the strong correlation between antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity in phase-separated AxFe2-x/2Se2 (A = K, Rb, Cs) superconductors.

Competition of magnetism and superconductivity in underdoped (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2

Polycrystalline samples of underdoped (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 (x<=0.4) were synthesized and studied by x-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and 57Fe-Moessbauer-spectroscopy. The structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic lattice symmetry shifts towards lower temperatures, becomes less pronounced at x = 0.1-0.2 and is no longer present at x = 0.3. Bulk superconductivity is observed in all samples except (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2 by resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Specific heat data show a broad SDW phase transition in (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2, which is hardly discernible in (Ba0.8K0.2)Fe2As2. No SDW anomaly is found in the specific heat of optimally doped (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2, where C changes by 0.1 J/K at Tc = 37.3 K. 57Fe-Moessbauer-spectra show full magnetic hyperfine field splitting, indicative of antiferromagnetic ordering at 4.2 K in samples with x = 0-0.2, but zero magnetic hyperfine field in samples with x = 0.3. The spectra of (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2 and (Ba0.8K0.2)Fe2As2 in the phase transition regions are temperature-dependent superpositions of magnetic and non-magnetic components, caused by inhomogeneous potassium distribution. Our results suggest the co-existence of AF magnetic ordering and superconductivity without mesoscopic phase separation in the underdoped region and show unambiguously homogeneous superconducting phases close to optimal doping. This is in contrast to recently reported results about single crystal (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2.
