Near itinerancy and slow singlet formation in the triangular lattice NaRuO2

NaRuO$_2$ forms a delafossite-like structure that contains triangular sublattices of edge-sharing RuO$_6$ octahedra. It shows no evidence of magnetic order down to 100 mK and persistent spin fluctuations, suggestive of a quantum disordered magnetic ground state. In order to characterize the physical regime from which this disordered state arises, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Ru-$L_{2,3}$-edge, along with pulsed high-field magnetization to characterize both the local electronic structure and the magnetic interactions. Despite significant spin-orbit coupling inferred from XAS measurements, a spin-orbit exciton, characteristic of a spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator, was not observed with RIXS due to the presence of damped intraorbital excitations, which are characteristic of a metal. Corroborated by models of the high-field magnetization to a random singlet model, we propose a picture of a nearly itinerant system with strong magnetic and charge fluctuations that destabilize long-range magnetic order.

Impurity-induced moment freezing in NaFe$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_2$

We report the impact of magnetic impurity substitution on the quantum disordered magnetic ground state of NaRuO$_2$. Local $S=5/2$ moments are introduced into the frustrated triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ Ru moments via Fe-substitution in NaFe$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_2$, and the evolution of the magnetic ground state is reported. Local spin freezing associated with conventional spin glass behavior is observed upon Fe substitution, marking an impurity-induced freezing of the primarily dynamic magnetic ground state in NaRuO$_2$. Furthermore, local Fe moments induce a Curie-Weiss magnetic behavior in the uniform magnetic susceptibility, and the local moment magnitude is best described by dynamic Ru moments polarized about impurity sites. Our results establish an impurity-doping phenomenology consistent with inherently dynamic moments in NaRuO$_2$ that are pinned by local magnetic impurities, similar to ``swiss cheese" models of impurity-substituted copper oxides.

Mesoscopic Origin of Ferroelectric-Ferroelectric Transition in BaTiO3

Ferroelectric materials are the core of common technologies, such as medical ultrasound, mobile-phone antennae and low-power memory devices. The technological interest in ferroelectrics stems from the existence of switchable mesoscale polarization domains. Hence, understanding the origin of ferroelectric functionality requires realization of the domain dynamics during a ferroelectric transformation. However, domain dynamics characterization at the mesoscale is typically too slow with respect to the abrupt ferroic transition. Using scanning probe microscopy with 15-mK thermal-, and deep-submicron spatial-resolution, we realized the domain dynamics during an orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transition in the seminal ferroelectric BaTiO3. We show that the transition comprises four distinguishable mechanisms. The dominant mechanism is a step-by-step progression of a tetragonal-domain wavefront into the orthorhombic phase. This progression is accompanied by ripple-like surface irregularities. Small island domains that remained orthorhombic diffuse then slowly after the wavefront progression. Finally, the resultant tetragonal domains equilibrate by coalescing in a constant-speed. These observations, which are accompanied by quantitative data, bridge between existing macroscopic and microscopic models regarding the nature of ferroelectric transitions, showing the mesoscale origin of ferroelectricity.
