Flint: A Semantics-Driven Data Visualization Intermediate Language

We present Flint, an intermediate language that enables authors to create high-quality visualizations from concise, semantics-driven specifications without explicitly configuring low-level parameters such as scales, axes, and formatting. Unlike prior systems that infer default configurations from surface-level data representations, often producing brittle choices, Flint introduces a hierarchical data semantic model that allows users to specify the meanings of data fields structurally and helps the compiler derive appropriate visualization configurations. From a concise specification, the system generates and optimizes library-agnostic visualization configurations and translates them into complete, executable specifications for multiple target grammars, including Vega-Lite, Apache ECharts, and Chart.js. We demonstrate that Flint simplifies the authoring process without compromising on visual quality, and it is an effective intermediate language for both humans and AI agents to create visualizations.

ChartA11y: Designing Accessible Touch Experiences of Visualizations with Blind Smartphone Users

We introduce ChartA11y, an app developed to enable accessible 2-D visualizations on smartphones for blind users through a participatory and iterative design process involving 13 sessions with two blind partners. We also present a design journey for making accessible touch experiences that go beyond simple auditory feedback, incorporating multimodal interactions and multisensory data representations. Together, ChartA11y aimed at providing direct chart accessing and comprehensive chart understanding by applying a two-mode setting: a semantic navigation framework mode and a direct touch mapping mode. By re-designing traditional touch-to-audio interactions, ChartA11y also extends to accessible scatter plots, addressing the under-explored challenges posed by their non-linear data distribution. Our main contributions encompass the detailed participatory design process and the resulting system, ChartA11y, offering a novel approach for blind users to access visualizations on their smartphones.

Visual Designs for Binned Aggregation of Multi-Class Scatterplots

Point sets in 2D with multiple classes are a common type of data. A canonical visualization design for them are scatterplots, which do not scale to large collections of points. For these larger data sets, binned aggregation (or binning) is often used to summarize the data, with many possible design alternatives for creating effective visual representations of these summaries. There are a wide range of designs to show summaries of 2D multi-class point data, each capable of supporting different analysis tasks. In this paper, we explore the space of visual designs for such data, and provide design guidelines for different analysis scenarios. To support these guidelines, we compile a set of abstract tasks and ground them in concrete examples using multiple sample datasets. We then assess designs, and survey a range of design decisions, considering their appropriateness to the tasks. In addition, we provide a web-based implementation to experiment with design choices, supporting the validation of designs based on task needs.
