A compact entanglement distillery

Large-scale quantum-correlated networks could transform technologies ranging from communications and cryptography to computation, metrology, and simulation of novel materials. Critical to achieving such quantum enhancements is distributing high-quality entanglement between distant nodes. This is made possible in the unavoidable presence of decoherence by entanglement distillation. However, current versions of this protocol are prohibitively costly in terms of resources. We introduce a new scheme for continuous-variable entanglement distillation that requires only linear temporal and constant physical or spatial resources, both of which are exponential improvements over existing protocols. Our scheme uses a fixed module - an entanglement distillery - comprising only four quantum memories of at most 50 % storage efficiency and allowing a feasible experimental implementation. Tangible quantum advantages are obtained by using non-ideal quantum memories outside their conventional role of storage. By creating, storing and processing information in the same physical space, the scheme establishes a potentially valuable technique for designing stable, scalable protocols across different quantum technologies.

Quantavo: a Maple Toolbox for Linear Quantum Optics

This manual describes the basic objectives, functionalities and uses of the toolbox for Maple (Maplesoft^TM) called Quantavo. It is intended to facilitate calculations both symbolically and numerically related to Quantum Optics. In particular the evolution, measurement and entanglement properties of quantum states in the Fock basis can be simulated with it. It is provided to the community as a free open source module.

Bell's inequalities with realistic noise for polarization-entangled photons

Contrary to the usual assumption that the experimental preparation of pure entangled states can be described by mixed states due to white noise, a more realistic description for polarization-entangled states produced by parametric down-conversion is that they are mixed states due to decoherence in a preferred polarization basis. This distinction between white and colored noise is crucial when we look for maximal violations of Bell's inequalities for two-qubit and two-qutrit entangled states. We find that violations of Bell's inequalities with realistic noise for polarization-entangled photons are extremely robust for colored noise, whereas this is not the case for white noise. In addition, we study the difference between white and colored noise for maximal violations of Bell's inequalities for three and four-qubit entangled states.
