Forward-backward equations for nonlinear propagation in axially-invariant optical systems

We present a novel general framework to deal with forward and backward components of the electromagnetic field in axially-invariant nonlinear optical systems, which include those having any type of linear or nonlinear transverse inhomogeneities. With a minimum amount of approximations, we obtain a system of two first-order equations for forward and backward components explicitly showing the nonlinear couplings among them. The modal approach used allows for an effective reduction of the dimensionality of the original problem from 3+1 (three spatial dimensions plus one time dimension) to 1+1 (one spatial dimension plus one frequency dimension). The new equations can be written in a spinor Dirac-like form, out of which conserved quantities can be calculated in an elegant manner. Finally, these new equations inherently incorporate spatio-temporal couplings, so that they can be easily particularized to deal with purely temporal or purely spatial effects. Nonlinear forward pulse propagation and non-paraxial evolution of spatial structures are analyzed as examples.

Stochastic backgrounds of gravitational waves and spherical detectors

The analysis of how a stochastic background of gravitational radiation interacts with a spherical detector is given in detail, which leads to explicit expressions for the system response functions, as well as for the cross-correlation matrix of different readout channels. It is shown that distinctive features of GW induced random detector excitations, relative to locally generated noise, are in practice insufficient to separate the signal from the noise by means of a single sphere, if prior knowledge on the GW spectral density is nil. The situation significantly improves when such previous knowledge is available, due to the omnidirectionality and multimode capacities of a spherical GW antenna.

Fake signals caused by heavy mass motions near a sensitive spherical gravitational wave antenna

This paper analyses in quantitative detail the effect caused by a moving mass on a spherical gravitational wave detector. This applies to situations where heavy traffic or similar disturbances happen near the GW antenna. Such disturbances result in quadrupole tidal stresses in the antenna mass, and they therefore precisely fake a real gravitational signal. The study shows that there always are characteristic frequencies, depending on the motion of the external masses, at which the fake signals are most intense. It however appears that, even at those frequencies, fake signals should be orders of magnitude below the sensitivity curve of an optimised detector, in likely realistic situations.

Monopole and vortex content of a meron pair

We investigate the monopole and vortex content of a meron pair by calculating the points at which the transformation to the Laplacian Center Gauge is ill-defined and by studying the behavior of Wilson loops. These techniques reveal complementary aspects of the vortex and monopole structure, including the presence of closed monopole lines and closed vortex surfaces joining the two merons, and evidence for intersecting vortex surfaces at each meron.

SU(2) vortex configuration in Laplacian Center Gauge

We study how Laplacian Center Gauge identifies the vortex content of a thick SU(2) vortex configuration on the lattice. This configuration is a solution of the Yang-Mills classical equations of motion having vortex properties. We find that this gauge fixing procedure cleanly identifies the underlying vortex properties. We also study the monopole content of this configuration detected with this procedure. We obtain two monopole curves lying on the surface of the vortex.

Numerical analysis of fractional charge solutions on the torus

We study by numerical methods a particular kind of SU(N) Yang-Mills solutions of the Euclidean equations of motion which appear on the torus when twisted boundary conditions are imposed. These are instanton-like configurations with the peculiarity of having fractional topological charge. We focus on those solutions with minimal non-trivial action $S=8π^2/\N$ and extract their properties in a few different cases, paying special attention to the $N \to \infty$ limit.

Vortex configurations in the large N limit

We study the properties of vortex-like configurations which are solutions of the SU(N) Yang-Mills classical equations of motion. We show that these solutions are concentrated along a two-dimensional wall with size growing with the number of colors.

SU(3) vortex-like configurations in the maximal center gauge

A new algorithm for fixing the gauge to (direct) maximal center gauge in SU(N) lattice gauge theory is presented. We check how this method works on SU(3) configurations which are vortex-like, and show how these configurations look like when center projected.
