Entanglement, anomalies and Mathisson's helices

We study the physical properties of a length-torsion functional which encodes the holographic entanglement entropy for 1+1 dimensional theories with chiral anomalies. Previously, we have shown that its extremal curves correspond to the mysterious Mathisson's helical motions for the centroids of spinning bodies. We explore the properties of these helices in domain-wall backgrounds using both analytic and numerical techniques. Using these insights we derive an entropic $c$-function $c_{\mathrm{Hel}}(\ell)$ which can be succinctly expressed in terms of Noether charges conserved along these helical motions. While for generic values of the anomaly there is some ambiguity in the definition of $c_{\mathrm{Hel}}(\ell)$, we argue that at the chiral point this ambiguity is absent.

Spinning probes and helices in AdS$_3$

We study extremal curves associated with a functional which is linear in the curve's torsion. The functional in question is known to capture the properties of entanglement entropy for two-dimensional conformal field theories with chiral anomalies and has potential applications in elucidating the equilibrium shape of elastic linear structures. We derive the equations that determine the shape of its extremal curves in general ambient spaces in terms of geometric quantities. We show that the solutions to these shape equations correspond to a three-dimensional version of Mathisson's helical motions for the centers of mass of spinning probes. Thereafter, we focus on the case of maximally symmetric spaces, where solutions correspond to cylindrical helices and find that the Lancret ratio of these equals the relative speed between the Mathisson-Pirani and the Tulczyjew-Dixon observers. Finally, we construct all possible helical motions in three-dimensional manifolds with constant negative curvature. In particular, we discover a rich space of helices in AdS$_3$ which we explore in detail.

On the Shape of Things: From holography to elastica

We explore the question of which shape a manifold is compelled to take when immersed in another one, provided it must be the extremum of some functional. We consider a family of functionals which depend quadratically on the extrinsic curvatures and on projections of the ambient curvatures. These functionals capture a number of physical setups ranging from holography to the study of membranes and elastica. We present a detailed derivation of the equations of motion, known as the shape equations, placing particular emphasis on the issue of gauge freedom in the choice of normal frame. We apply these equations to the particular case of holographic entanglement entropy for higher curvature three dimensional gravity and find new classes of entangling curves. In particular, we discuss the case of New Massive Gravity where we show that non-geodesic entangling curves have always a smaller on-shell value of the entropy functional. Then we apply this formalism to the computation of the entanglement entropy for dual logarithmic CFTs. Nevertheless, the correct value for the entanglement entropy is provided by geodesics. Then, we discuss the importance of these equations in the context of classical elastica and comment on terms that break gauge invariance.

Entanglement and mutual information in two-dimensional nonrelativistic field theories

We carry out a systematic study of entanglement entropy in nonrelativistic conformal field theories via holographic techniques. After a discussion of recent results concerning Galilean conformal field theories, we deduce a novel expression for the entanglement entropy of (1+1)-dimensional Lifshitz field theories --- this is done both at zero and finite temperature. Based on these results, we pose a conjecture for the anomaly coefficient of a Lifshitz field theory dual to new massive gravity. It is found that the Lifshitz entanglement entropy at finite temperature displays a striking similarity with that corresponding to a flat space cosmology in three dimensions. We claim that this structure is an inherent feature of the entanglement entropy for nonrelativistic conformal field theories. We finish by exploring the behavior of the mutual information for such theories.

Scrambling without chaos in RCFT

In this paper we investigate measures of chaos and entanglement in rational conformal field theories in 1+1 dimensions. First, we derive a universal formula for the late time value of the out-of-time-ordered correlators for this class of theories. Our universal result can be expressed as a particular combination of the modular S-matrix elements known as the anyon monodromy scalar. Next, in the explicit setup of a $SU(N)_k$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model, we compare the late time behavior of the out-of-time-ordered correlators and the purity. Interestingly, in the large-c limit, the purity grows logarithmically as in holographic theories; in contrast, the out-of-time-ordered correlators remain, in general, non-vanishing.

Graph duality as an instrument of Gauge-String correspondence

We explore an identity between two branching graphs and propose a physical meaning in the context of the gauge-gravity correspondence. From the mathematical point of view, the identity equates probabilities associated with $\mathbb{GT}$, the branching graph of the unitary groups, with probabilities associated with $\mathbb{Y}$, the branching graph of the symmetric groups. In order to furnish the identity with physical meaning, we exactly reproduce these probabilities as the square of three point functions involving certain hook-shaped backgrounds. We study these backgrounds in the context of LLM geometries and discover that they are domain walls interpolating two AdS spaces with different radii. We also find that, in certain cases, the probabilities match the eigenvalues of some observables, the embedding chain charges. We finally discuss a holographic interpretation of the mathematical identity through our results.

Counting paths with Schur transitions

In this work we explore the structure of the branching graph of the unitary group using Schur transitions. We find that these transitions suggest a new combinatorial expression for counting paths in the branching graph. This formula, which is valid for any rank of the unitary group, reproduces known asymptotic results. We proceed to establish the general validity of this expression by a formal proof. The form of this equation strongly hints towards a quantum generalization. Thus, we introduce a notion of quantum relative dimension and subject it to the appropriate consistency tests. This new quantity finds its natural environment in the context of RCFTs and fractional statistics; where the already established notion of quantum dimension has proven to be of great physical importance.

Gravitational anomalies, entanglement entropy, and flat-space holography

We introduce a prescription to compute the entanglement entropy of Galilean conformal field theories by combining gravitational anomalies and an İnönü-Wigner contraction. We find that our expression for the entanglement entropy in the thermal limit reproduces the Cardy formula for Galilean conformal field theories. Using this proposal, we calculate the entanglement entropy for a class of Galilean conformal field theories, which are believed to be dual to three-dimensional flat-space cosmological solutions. These geometries describe expanding (contracting) universes and can be viewed as the flat-space limit of rotating Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes. We show that our finding reduces, in the appropriate limits, to the results discussed in the literature and provide interpretations for the previously unexplored regimes, such as flat-space chiral gravity.

Entanglement constant for conformal families

We show that in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories, exciting a state with a local operator increases the Renyi entanglement entropies by a constant which is the same for every member of the conformal family. Hence, it is an intrinsic parameter that characterises local operators from the perspective of quantum entanglement. In rational conformal field theories this constant corresponds to the logarithm of the quantum dimension of the primary operator. We provide several detailed examples for the second Renyi entropies and a general derivation.

Free-kick condition for entanglement entropy in higher curvature gravity

In order to compute the entanglement entropy for a given region in a theory with an Einstein gravity dual, the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription tells us that we must compute the the area of an extremal surface anchored to the entangling region. However, if the dual gravity theory receives higher-curvature corrections we are compelled to extremize a quantity which is no longer given by the area but a higher-derivative functional. Hence, in order to find the extremal surface that yields the correct value of the entanglement entropy, we must include an additional boundary condition to the problem. We claim that the additional condition can be fixed by demanding that the relationship between the bulk depth and the size of the entangling region is the one induced by geodesics, we call this the free-kick condition. We implement this prescription in the computation of the entanglement entropy of the hairy black hole in new massive gravity, and find a perfect agreement with conformal field theory expectations.

Renormalized Entanglement Entropy for BPS Black Branes

We compute the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) for BPS black solutions in ${\cal N}=2$, 4d gauged supergravity. We find that this quantity decreases monotonically with the size of the entangling region until it reaches a critical point, then increases and approaches the entropy density of the brane. This behavior can be understood as a consequence of the REE being driven by two competing factors, namely entanglement and the mixedness of the black brane. In the UV entanglement dominates, whereas in the IR the mixedness takes over.

Quantum corrections to extremal black brane solutions

We discuss quantum corrections to extremal black brane solutions in N=2 U(1) gauged supergravity in four dimensions. We consider modifications due to a certain class of higher-derivative terms as well as perturbative corrections to the prepotential. We use the entropy function formalism to assess the impact of these corrections on singular brane solutions and we give a few examples. We then use first-order flow equations to construct solutions that interpolate between quantum corrected fixed points of the associated potentials.

On the sigma-model of deformed special geometry

We discuss the deformed sigma-model that arises when considering four-dimensional N=2 abelian vector multiplets in the presence of an arbitrary chiral background field. In addition, we allow for a class of deformations of special geometry by non-holomorphic terms. We analyze the geometry of the sigma-model in terms of intrinsic torsion classes. We show that, generically, the deformed geometry is non-Kahler. We illustrate our findings with an example. We also express the deformed sigma-model in terms of the Hesse potential that underlies the real formulation of special geometry.

Non-homogenous disks in the chain of matrices

We investigate the generating functions of multi-colored discrete disks with non-homogenous boundary conditions in the context of the Hermitian multi-matrix model where the matrices are coupled in an open chain. We show that the study of the spectral curve of the matrix model allows one to solve a set of loop equations to get a recursive formula computing mixed trace correlation functions to leading order in the large matrix limit.
