Döblin--Fourier cancellation and kinetic Aleksandrov estimates

We develop a cancellation mechanism for linear second-order kinetic equations in non-divergence form with measurable uniformly elliptic coefficients. We decompose the dynamics into spatial waves and follow two families of velocity paths along which the waves acquire nearly opposite phases. The parabolic Krylov--Safonov theory gives a common lower bound for the two velocity marginals. The corresponding contributions cancel up to a small phase error, producing a contraction \textit{à la Döblin}. Iterating this contraction yields exponential Fourier decay estimates with enhanced dissipation. We then present two applications. The first contribution is a kinetic Aleksandrov estimate: a maximum principle in which the source is measured in an $L^p$ norm. For rough coefficients $A(t,v)$ independent of position, we obtain the estimate for every $p>2n+1$, where $n$ is the dimension of position and velocity. The Fourier decay also gives spatial smoothness, and parabolic regularity gives Hölder continuity in time and velocity. For autonomous coefficients $a(x,v)$ in dimension one, position serves as time away from zero velocity. A Harnack comparison controls returns to small velocity intervals and yields the estimate for every $p>4$. Both thresholds are optimal among those valid for all ellipticity ratios. The second contribution concerns position on the torus and velocity on the sphere, with measurable uniformly elliptic diffusion coefficients $A(t,v)$ independent of position. We prove enhanced dissipation with the optimal square-root frequency power and Gevrey regularity in position. For autonomous coefficients $A=A(v)$, we also obtain exponential convergence to equilibrium in $L^2$ weighted by the invariant velocity measure, and a quantitative spectral gap. To our knowledge, these are the first results on decay established for laws of kinetic equations with rough coefficients.

Poincaré inequality and quantitative De Giorgi method for hypoelliptic operators

We propose a systematic approach based on trajectories to prove a Poincaré inequality for weak non-negative sub-solutions to hypoelliptic equations with an arbitrary number of Hörmander commutators, both in the local and in the non-local case. As a consequence, we deduce the weak Harnack inequality and Hölder regularity along the line of the De Giorgi method.

Semi-local behaviour of non-local hypoelliptic equations: divergence form

We derive the Strong Harnack inequality for a class of hypoelliptic integro-differential equations in divergence form. Our result is semi-local, in the sense that we require the equation to hold globally in velocity. In fact, it is known that the Strong Harnack inequality fails in the kinetic case if the equation is merely satisfied in a bounded velocity domain [arXiv:2405.05223]. This is in stark contrast to the case of parabolic equations, for which a local Strong Harnack inequality holds. In a first step, we derive a local bound on the non-local tail on upper level sets by exploiting the coercivity of the cross terms. In a second step, we perform a De Giorgi argument in $L^1$, since we control the tail term only in $L^1$. This yields a linear $L^1$ to $L^\infty$ bound. Consequently, we prove polynomial upper bounds for $s\in(0,1)$ and exponential lower bounds for $s\in(\frac12,1)$ on the fundamental solution by adapting Aronson's method to non-local hypoelliptic equations.

Conditional appearance of decay for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation in a bounded domain

This work is concerned with the generation of decay estimates in the velocity variable for solutions of the space-inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without cutoff on a bounded spatial domain for hard and moderately soft potentials. We work with suitable weak solutions, provided that mass, energy and entropy density functions are under control. The following boundary conditions are treated: in-flow, bounce-back, specular reflection, diffuse reflection and Maxwell reflection. The notion of weak solutions relies on a family of Truncated Convex Inequalities that is inspired by the one recently introduced through F.~Golse, L.~Silvestre and the first author (2023) in the spatially homogeneous case. We show that the solutions generate some amount (up to $d+1$) of pointwise polynomial velocity decay. In case of moderately soft potentials, we show that it is not possible to generate a decay higher than $d+2$ if the energy is bounded.

Quantitative Schauder estimates for hypoelliptic equations

We derive Schauder estimates using ideas from Campanato's approach for a general class of local hypoelliptic operators and non-local kinetic equations. The method covers equations in divergence and non-divergence form. In particular our results are applicable to the inhomogeneous Landau and to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation. The paper is self-contained.

Global smooth solutions to the Landau-Coulomb equation in $L^{3/2}$

We consider the homogeneous Landau equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with Coulomb potential and initial data in polynomially weighted $L^{3/2}$. We show that there exists a smooth solution that is bounded for all positive times. The proof is based on short-time regularization estimates for the Fisher information, which, combined with the recent result of Guillen and Silvestre, yields the existence of a global-in-time smooth solution. Additionally, if the initial data belongs to $L^p$ with $p>3/2$, there is a unique solution. At the crux of the result is a new $\varepsilon$-regularity criterion in the spirit of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg theorem: a solution which is small in weighted $L^{3/2}$ is regular. Although the $L^{3/2}$ norm is a critical quantity for the Landau-Coulomb equation, using this norm to measure the regularity of solutions presents significant complications. For instance, the $L^{3/2}$ norm alone is not enough to control the $L^\infty$ norm of the competing reaction and diffusion coefficients. These analytical challenges caused prior methods relying on the parabolic structure of the Landau-Coulomb to break down. Our new framework is general enough to handle slowly decaying and singular initial data, and provides the first proof of global well-posedness for the Landau-Coulomb equation with rough initial data.

Semi-local behaviour of non-local hypoelliptic equations: Boltzmann

The purpose of this note is to demonstrate the announced result in [Loher, The Strong Harnack inequality for the Boltzmann equation, Séminaire Laurent Schwartz proceeding] by filling the gap in the proof sketch. We prove the semi-local Strong Harnack inequality for the Boltzmann equation for moderately soft potentials without cutoff assumption. The non-local operator in the Boltzmann equation is in non-divergence form, and thus the method developed in [arXiv:2404.05612] does not apply. However, we exploit that the Boltzmann equation is on average in divergence form, and we show that the non-divergent part of the collision operator is of lower order in a suitable sense, which proves to be sufficient to deduce the Strong Harnack inequality. Consequentially, we derive upper and lower bounds on the fundamental solution of the linearised Boltzmann equation.

Nonlinear regularization estimates and global well-posedness for the Landau-Coulomb equation near equilibrium

We consider the Landau equation with Coulomb potential in the spatially homogeneous case. We show short time propagation of smallness in $L^p$ norms for $p>3/2$ and instantaneous regularization in Sobolev spaces. This yields new short time quantitative a priori estimates that are unconditional near equilibrium. We combine these estimates with existing literature on global well-posedness for regular data to extend the well-posedness theory to small $L^p$ data with $p$ arbitrarily close to $3/2$. The threshold $p = 3/2$ agrees with previous work on conditional regularity for the Landau equation in the far from equilibrium regime. In light of the monotonicity of the Fisher information shown in the recent preprint [arXiv:2311.09420], our primary nonlinear regularization estimate holds even in the far-from-equilibrium regime. As a consequence, we obtain exponential convergence to equilibrium for suitably localized solutions in every Sobolev norm.

Quantitative De Giorgi methods in kinetic theory for non-local operators

We derive quantitatively the Harnack inequalities for kinetic integro-differential equations. This implies Hölder continuity. Our method is based on trajectories and exploits a term arising due to the non-locality in the energy estimate. This permits to quantitatively prove the intermediate value lemma for the full range of non-locality parameter $s \in (0, 1)$. Our results recover the results from Imbert and Silvestre [22] for the inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation in the non-cutoff case. The paper is self-contained.

Local-in-time strong solutions of the homogeneous Landau-Coulomb equation with $L^p$ initial datum

We consider the homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential and general initial data $f_{in} \in L^p$, where $p$ is arbitrarily close to $3/2$. We show the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions for such initial data. The constraint $p > 3/2$ has appeared in several related works and appears to be the minimal integrability assumption achievable with current techniques. We adapt recent ODE methods and conditional regularity results appearing in [arXiv:2303.02281] to deduce new short time $L^p \to L^\infty$ smoothing estimates. These estimates enable us to construct local-in-time smooth solutions for large $L^p$ initial data, and allow us to show directly conditional regularity results for solutions verifying \emph{unweighted} Prodi-Serrin type conditions. As a consequence, we obtain additional stability and uniqueness results for the solutions we construct.
