Supersimplicity and arithmetic progressions

The main motivation for this article is to explore the connections between the existence of certain combinatorial patterns (as in van der Corputs's theorem on arithmetic progressions of length $3$) with well-known tools and theorems for definable groups in simple theories. In the last sections of this article, we apply our model-theoretic results to bound the number of initial points starting few arithmetic progression of length $3$ in the structure of the additive group of integers with a predicate for the prime integers, assuming Dickson's conjecture, or with a predicate for the square-free integers, as well as for asymptotic limits of finite fields. Our techniques yield similar results for the elements appearing as distances in skew-corners and for Sárközy's theorem on the distance of distinct elements being perfect squares.

Model theory, differential algebra and functional transcendence

The goal of this text is to exhibit some of the ideas and methods from geometric model theory, translated to the particular context of differentially closed fields, exhibiting in a more or less self-contained way the tools needed for the recent proof of Freitag, Jaoui and Moosa on functional transcendence and their so-called C$_2$-property, which serves as a leitmotif for the presentation.

Stability, corners, and other 2-dimensional shapes

We introduce a relaxation of stability, called almost sure stability, which is insensitive to perturbations by subsets of Loeb measure $0$ in a non-standard finite group. We show that almost sure stability satisfies a stationarity principle in the sense of geometric stability theory for measure independent elements. We apply this principle to deduce the existence of squares in dense almost surely stable subsets of Cartesian products of non-standard finite groups, possibly non-abelian. Our results imply qualitative asymptotic versions for Cartesian products of finite groups. In the final section, we establish the existence of $3\times 2$-grids (and thus of $L$-shapes) in dense almost surely stable $2$-dimensional subsets of finite abelian groups of odd order.

Forking independence in differentially closed fields of positive characteristic

We provide a differential-algebraic description of forking independence in the stable theory DCF$_{p,m}$ of differentially closed fields of characteristic $p>0$ with $m$-many commuting derivations. As a by-product of this description, we prove that types over algebraically closed subsets of the real sort are stationary. In addition, we prove that the set of non-zero solutions to the Bernoulli differential equation $x'=x^{p^k+1}$ with $k>0$ is strongly minimal and its geometry is strictly disintegrated, which implies that this set is algebraically independent over $\mathbb{F}_p$.

Simplicity of the automorphism group of fields with operators

We adapt a proof of Lascar in order to show the simplicity of the group of automorphisms fixing pointwise all non-generic elements for a class of uncountable models of suitable theories, encompassing both strongly minimal theories as well as several theories of fields with operators.

Non-forking independence in stable theories

We observe that a simple condition suffices to describes non-forking independence over models in a stable theory. Under mild assumptions, this description can be extended to non-forking independence over algebraically closed subsets, without having to use the full strength of the work of the seminal work of Kim and Pillay. The results in this note (which are surely well-known among most model theorists) essentially use that types over models in a stable theory are stationary.

Noetherian theories

A first-order theory is Noetherian with respect to the collection of formulae $\mathcal{F}$ if every definable set is a Boolean combination of instances of formulae in $\mathcal{F}$ and the topology whose subbasis of closed sets is the collection of instances of arbitrary formulae in $\mathcal{F}$ is Noetherian. Noetherianity is a strengthening of equationality, which itself implies stability. We show the Noetherianity of the theory of proper pairs of algebraically closed fields in any characteristic.

Stabilizers, Measures and IP-sets

The purpose of this simple note is to provide elementary model-theoretic proofs to some existing results on sumset phenomena and IP sets, motivated by Hrushovski's work on the stabilizer theorem.

Complete type amalgamation for non-standard finite groups

We extend previous work on Hrushovski's stabilizer's theorem and prove a measure-theoretic version of a well-known result of Pillay-Scanlon-Wagner on products of three types. This generalizes results of Gowers on products of three sets and yields model-theoretic proofs of existing asymptotic results for quasirandom groups. We also obtain a model-theoretic proof of Roth's theorem on the existence of arithmetic progressions of length $3$ for subsets of positive density in suitable definably amenable groups, such as countable amenable abelian groups without involutions and ultraproducts of finite abelian groups of odd order.

Trois couleurs: A new non-equational theory

A first-order theory is equational if every definable set is a Boolean combination of instances of equations, that is, of formulae such that the family of finite intersections of instances has the descending chain condition. Equationality is a strengthening of stability yet so far only two examples of non-equational stable theories are known. We construct non-equational $ω$-stable theories by a suitable colouring of the free pseudospace, based on Hrushovski and Srour's original example.

Ample Pairs

We show that the ample degree of a stable theory with trivial forking is preserved when we consider the corresponding theory of belles paires, if it exists. This result also applies to the theory of $H$-structures of a trivial theory of rank $1$.

Un Crit{È}Re Simple

In this short note, we mimic the proof of the simplicity of the theory ACFA of generic difference fields in order to provide a criterion, valid for certain theories of pure fields and fields equipped with operators, which shows that a complete theory is simple whenever its definable and algebraic closures are controlled by an underlying stable theory.

Equational theories of fields

A complete first-order theory is equational if every definable set is a Boolean combination of instances of equations, that is, of formulae such that the family of finite intersections of instances has the descending chain condition. Equationality is a strengthening of stability. We show the equationality of the theory of proper extensions of algebraically closed fields of some fixed characteristic and of the theory of separably closed fields of arbitrary imperfection degree. Srour showed that the theory of differentially closed fields in positive characteristic is equational. We give also a different proof of his result.

A model theoretic study of right-angled buildings

We study the model theory of countable right-angled buildings with infinite residues. For every Coxeter graph we obtain a complete theory with a natural axiomatisation, which is $ω$-stable and equational. Furthermore, we provide sharp lower and upper bounds for its degree of ampleness, computed exclusively in terms of the associated Coxeter graph. This generalises and provides an alternative treatment of the free pseudospace.

Looking for the lost torus

We classify the groups definable in the coloured fields obtained by Hrushovski amalgamation. A group definable in the bad green field is isogenous to the quotient of a subgroup of an algebraic group by a Cartesian power of the group of green elements. A definable subgroup of an algebraic group in the green or red field is an extension of the coloured points of a multiplicative or additive algebraic group by an algebraic group. In particular, a simple group in a coloured field is algebraic.
