Bias-Corrected Estimators for Joint Entropy, Conditional Entropy, and Mutual Information in the Discrete Bivariate Case: Theory and an Application to Motor Insurance

This paper studies the finite-sample bias of plug-in estimators for joint entropy, conditional entropy, and mutual information for finitely supported discrete random variables. Using the univariate reduction framework developed in our companion works, we derive explicit first-order bias formulas. For a pair (X,Y) with support sizes r and s, the biases are respectively -(rs-1)/(2n), -r(s-1)/(2n), and (r-1)(s-1)/(2n). We then propose bias-corrected estimators for the three measures and prove that the uncorrected and corrected versions are asymptotically equivalent, differing by a deterministic term of order O(1/n); consequently, they share the same asymptotic distribution. A simulation study validates the theoretical results, including a dedicated independence study and the relationship with Wilks' theorem. An application to a motor insurance portfolio, where X is the driver's age class and Y the claim severity class, illustrates the improvement brought by the bias correction for risk classification.

Consistency Bands for divergences measures

By wavelets approach we estimate densities. Then by means of mean value theorem we establish asymptotic consistency and normality for special divergence measures and construct their consistency bands.

Finite-Sample Bias Correction for Plug-in Estimators of Extropy, Rényi Extropy, and Tsallis Extropy

This paper studies the finite-sample bias of plug-in estimators for Shannon, Rényi, and Tsallis extropies for finitely supported discrete random variables. We derive explicit first-order bias formulas for all three estimators by analyzing the bias of the intermediate functional S_α= \sum_{i=1}^r (1-p_i)^α. Bias-corrected estimators are then proposed. We show that the uncorrected and corrected estimators are asymptotically equivalent, differing only by terms of order O(1/n). A simulation study validates the theoretical results and demonstrates the superior finite-sample performance of the bias-corrected estimators. The results justify the use of the simpler uncorrected plug-in estimators in asymptotic settings, such as those considered in the companion paper on almost sure convergence and asymptotic normality.

Nonparametric Estimation of Extropy, Rényi Extropy, and Tsallis Extropy: Almost Sure Convergence and Asymptotic Normality

This paper proposes a nonparametric estimation procedure for extropy and its extensions, namely the α-Rényi and α-Tsallis extropies, for finite discrete random variables. We establish almost sure rates of convergence and asymptotic normality for the plug-in estimators. The theoretical results are validated through a comprehensive simulation study. The findings provide a solid foundation for the use of extropy-based measures in practical applications, including forecasting, risk assessment, and decision-making under uncertainty.

Non parametric estimation of joint, Renyi-Stallis entropies and mutual information and asymptotic limits

This paper proposes a new method for estimating the joint probability mass function of a pair of discrete random variables. This estimator is used to construct joint Shannon Rényi-Tsallis entropies, and the mutual information estimates of a pair of discrete random variables. Almost sure consistency and central limit Theorems are established. Our theorical results are validated by simulations.

Entropies and their Asymptotic Theory in the discrete case

We present some new nonparametric estimators of entropies and we establish almost sure consistency and central limit Theorems for some of the most important entropies in the discrete case. Our theorical results are validated by simulations.
