Some open billiards with distinct top Lyapunov exponents

We study open billiard flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$ generated by reflections in the exterior of at least three ellipsoids with $C^3$ boundaries. Each obstacle is congruent to $$\tilde{K} = \{(x,y,z)\in \mathbb{R}^3 : x^2+y^2+(βz)^2 \leq r^2\},$$ with parameter $β>1$, small radii, and centers $O_i$ lying in the plane $Γ=\{z=0\}$. The configuration satisfies the no-eclipse condition (H). For any Gibbs measure on the non-wandering set of the billiard ball map, we prove that if $β>1/c_1^2$, for some constant $c_1>0$ determined by the geometry of the configuration, the two positive Lyapunov exponents are distinct and positive: $λ_1(β)>λ_2(β)>0$. Moreover, $λ_2$ is independent of $β$ and corresponds to the restriction of the billiard flow to the plane $Γ$.

Lyapunov Exponents for Open Billiards in the Exterior of Balls

In this paper we consider the billiard flow in the exterior of several (at least three) balls in $\R^3$ with centres lying on a plane. We assume that the balls satisfy the no eclipse condition (H) and their radii are small compared to the distances between their centres. We prove that with respect to any Gibbs measure on the non-wandering set of the billiard flow the two positive Lyapunov exponents are different: $λ_1 > λ_2 > 0$.

Differentiability of the largest Lyapunov exponent for non-planar open billiards

This paper investigates the behaviour of open billiard systems in high-dimensional spaces. Specifically, we estimate the largest Lyapunov exponent, which quantifies the rate of divergence between nearby trajectories in a dynamical system. This exponent is shown to be continuously dependent and differentiable with respect to a small perturbation parameter. A theoretical analysis forms the basis of the investigation. Our findings contribute to the field of dynamical systems theory and have significant implications for the stability of open billiard systems, which are used to model physical phenomena. The results provide a deeper comprehension of the behaviour of open billiard systems in high-dimensional spaces and emphasise the importance of taking small perturbations into consideration when analysing these systems.
