Regular Expression Denial of Service Induced by Backreferences

This paper presents the first systematic study of denial-of-service vulnerabilities in Regular Expressions with Backreferences (REwB). We introduce the Two-Phase Memory Automaton (2PMFA), an automaton model that precisely captures REwB semantics. Using this model, we derive necessary conditions under which backreferences induce super-linear backtracking runtime, even when sink ambiguity is linear -- a regime where existing detectors report no vulnerability. Based on these conditions, we identify three vulnerability patterns, develop detection and attack-construction algorithms, and validate them in practice. Using the Snort intrusion detection ruleset, our evaluation identifies 45 previously unknown REwB vulnerabilities with quadratic or worse runtime. We further demonstrate practical exploits against Snort, including slowing rule evaluation by 0.6-1.2 seconds and bypassing alerts by triggering PCRE's matching limit.

Quantum Transformer: Accelerating model inference via quantum linear algebra

Powerful generative artificial intelligence from large language models (LLMs) harnesses extensive computational resources for inference. In this work, we investigate the transformer architecture, a key component of these models, under the lens of fault-tolerant quantum computing. We develop quantum subroutines to construct the building blocks in the transformer, including the self-attention, residual connection with layer normalization, and feed-forward network. As an important subroutine, we show how to efficiently implement the Hadamard product and element-wise functions of matrices on quantum computers. Our algorithm prepares an amplitude encoding of the transformer output, which can be measured for prediction or use in the next layer. We find that the matrix norm of the input sequence plays a dominant role in the quantum complexity. With numerical experiments on open-source LLMs, including for bio-informatics applications, we demonstrate the potential of a quantum speedup for transformer inference in practical regimes.

Learning Restricted Boltzmann Machines with greedy quantum search

Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) are widely used probabilistic undirected graphical models with visible and latent nodes, playing an important role in statistics and machine learning. The task of structure learning for RBMs involves inferring the underlying graph by using samples from the visible nodes. Specifically, learning the two-hop neighbors of each visible node allows for the inference of the graph structure. Prior research has addressed the structure learning problem for specific classes of RBMs, namely ferromagnetic and locally consistent RBMs. In this paper, we extend the scope to the quantum computing domain and propose corresponding quantum algorithms for this problem. Our study demonstrates that the proposed quantum algorithms yield a polynomial speedup compared to the classical algorithms for learning the structure of these two classes of RBMs.

On Permutation Weights and $q$-Eulerian Polynomials

Weights of permutations were originally introduced by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019) in their study of the combinatorics of tiered trees. Given a permutation $σ$ viewed as a sequence of integers, computing the weight of $σ$ involves recursively counting descents of certain subpermutations of $σ$. Using this weight function, one can define a $q$-analog $E_n(x,q)$ of the Eulerian polynomials. We prove two main results regarding weights of permutations and the polynomials $E_n(x,q)$. First, we show that the coefficients of $E_n(x, q)$ stabilize as $n$ goes to infinity, which was conjectured by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019), and enables the definition of the formal power series $W_d(t)$, which has interesting combinatorial properties. Second, we derive a recurrence relation for $E_n(x, q)$, similar to the known recurrence for the classical Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$. Finally, we give a recursive formula for the numbers of certain integer partitions and, from this, conjecture a recursive formula for the stabilized coefficients mentioned above.

Towards cavity-free ground state cooling of an acoustic-frequency silicon nitride membrane

We demonstrate feedback cooling of a millimeter-scale, 40 kHz SiN membrane from room temperature to 5 mK (3000 phonons) using a Michelson interferometer, and discuss the challenges to ground state cooling without an optical cavity. This advance appears within reach of current membrane technology, positioning it as a compelling alternative to levitated systems for quantum sensing and fundamental weak force measurements.

Mueller matrix spectroscopy of Fano resonance in Plasmonic Oligomers

Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomers originating from the interference of a spectrally broad superradiant mode and a discrete subradiant mode is under intensive recent investigations due to numerous potential applications. In this regard, development of experimental means to understand and control the complex Fano interference process and to modulate the resulting asymmetric Fano spectral line shape is highly sought after. Here we present a polarization Mueller matrix measurement and inverse analysis approach for quantitative understanding and interpretation of the complex interference process that lead to Fano resonance in symmetry broken plasmonic oligomers. The spectral Mueller matrices of the plasmonic oligomers were recorded using a custom designed dark-field Mueller matrix spectroscopy system. These were subsequently analyzed using differential Mueller matrix decomposition technique to yield the quantitative sample polarimetry characteristics, namely, polarization diattenuation (d) and linear retardance (δ) parameters. The unique signature of the interference of the superradiant dipolar plasmon mode and the subradiant quadrupolar mode of the symmetry broken plasmonic oligomers manifested as rapid spectral variation of the diattenuation and the linear retardance parameters across the Fano spectral dip. The polarization information contained in the Mueller matrix was further utilized to desirably control the Fano spectral line shape. The experimental Mueller matrix analysis was complemented with finite element based numerical simulations, which enabled quantitative understanding of the interference of the superradiant and the subradiant plasmon modes and its link with the polarization diattenuation and retardance parameters.
