Coupling of neutrino beam-driven MHD waves and resonant instabilities in rotating magnetoplasmas with neutrino two-flavor oscillations

We present an analysis of neutrino-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities in a rotating magnetoplasma with weak neutrino interactions. We show that neutrino-driven shear Alfv{é}n and oblique magnetosonic waves can be coupled by the Coriolis force, forming new wave modes affected by this force, as well as neutrino beam and two neutrino flavor oscillations. Our work extends previous theories by demonstrating that shear Alfv{é}n waves are influenced by neutrino effects and by identifying instabilities resulting from resonant interactions with both a streaming neutrino beam and flavor oscillations. We find that the Coriolis force, plasma density, and magnetic field strength significantly affect the profiles of instability growth rates. Such a growth rate for magnetosonic waves appears much higher than the Alfv{é}n wave, implying that magnetosonic waves provide a superior mechanism for energy extraction from the neutrino beam. For typical parameters relevant to the protoneutron star surface, the instability time for magnetosonic waves may vary in the range 0.09-0.14 s, which is within the predicted time of the neutrino-driven explosion (0.3 s after bounce) reported in the recent three-dimensional MHD simulations of core-collapse supernovae. Our findings may shed new light on the physical mechanisms underlying core-collapse supernovae.

Dust-ion-acoustic damped solitary waves and shocks in laboratory and Saturn's E-ring magnetized nonthermal dusty plasmas with anisotropic ion pressure and dust-charge fluctuation

We study the oblique propagation of weakly nonlinear dust-ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary waves (SWs) and shocks in collisional magnetized nonthermal dusty plasmas that are relevant in laboratory and space (Saturn's E-ring) environments. We consider plasmas to be composed of $q$-nonextensive hot electrons, thermal positive ions, and immobile negatively charged dust grains immersed in a static magnetic field and take into account the effects of ion creation (source), and ion loss (sink), ion-neutral and ion-dust collisions, anisotropic ion pressure and dust-charge fluctuations on the evolution of small-amplitude SWs and shocks. The ion-neutral collision enhancement equilibrium dust-charge number is self-consistently determined using Newton's Raphson method. We found that in laboratory dusty plasmas with adiabatic dust-charge variation [i.e., when the dust charging frequency ($ν_{\rm{ch}}$) is much higher than the dust-plasma oscillation frequency ($ω_{\rm{pd}}$)], the DIA solitary waves (DIASWs) get damped by the effects of the ion-dust and ion-neutral collisions, whereas the ion creation and ion loss leads to the amplification of solitary waves, and they appear as only compressive types with positive potential. On the other hand, in Saturn's E-ring plasmas, where the collisional and ion creation or ion loss effects are insignificant, the non-adiabaticity of dust-charge variation can give rise to the evolution of either damped DIASWs or DIA shocks, depending on the smallness of the ratios $ν_{\rm{ch}}/ω_{\rm{pd}}$ or $ω_{\rm{pd}}/ν_{\rm{ch}}$, respectively. Furthermore, two critical values of the nonextensive parameter $q$ exist, below (or above) which, the DIASWs and shocks can appear as rarefactive (or compressive) types. The characteristics of DIASWs and shocks are also analyzed numerically for parameters relevant to the laboratory and Saturn's E-ring plasmas.

Ion-acoustic solitary waves in a partially degenerate plasma

The propagation of arbitrary amplitude ion-acoustic (IA) solitary waves (SWs) is studied in unmagnetized, collisionless, homogeneous electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasmas with finite temperature degeneracy of both electrons and positrons. Starting from a set of fluid equations for classical ions and Fermi-Dirac distribution for degenerate electrons and positrons, a linear dispersion relation for IA waves is derived. It is seen that the wave dispersion is significantly modified due to the presence of positron species and the effects of finite temperature degeneracy of electrons and positrons. In the nonlinear regime, the Sagdeev's pseudopotential approach is employed to study the existence domain and the evolution of nonlinear IA-SWs in terms of the parameters that are associated with the finite temperature degeneracy, the background number densities, and the thermal energies of electrons and positrons. It is found that in contrast to classical electron-ion plasmas both the subsonic and supersonic IA-SWs can exist in a partially degenerate e-p-i plasma.

Stability of electromagnetic solitons]{Electromagnetic solitons and their stability in relativistic degenerate dense plasmas with two electron species

The evolution of electromagnetic (EM) solitons due to nonlinear coupling of circularly polarized intense laser pulses with low-frequency electron-acoustic perturbations is studied in relativistic degenerate dense astrophysical plasmas with two groups of electrons: a sparse population of classical relativistic electrons and a dense population of relativistic degenerate electron gas. Different forms of localized stationary solutions are obtained and their properties are analyzed. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion, the conditions for the existence and stability of a moving EM soliton are also studied. It is noted that the stable and unstable regions shift around the plane of soliton eigenfrequency and the soliton velocity due to the effects of relativistic degeneracy, the fraction of classical to degenerate electrons and the EM wave frequency. Furthermore, while the standing solitons exhibit stable profiles for a longer time, the moving solitons, however, can be stable or unstable depending on the degree of electron degeneracy, the soliton eigenfrequency and the soliton velocity. The latter with an enhanced value can eventually lead to a soliton collapse. The results should be useful for understanding the formation of solitons in the coupling of highly intense laser pulses with slow response of degenerate dense plasmas in the next generation laser-plasma interaction experiments as well as the novel features of $x$-ray and $γ$-ray pulses that originate from compact astrophysical objects.

Wave-particle interactions in quantum plasmas

Wave-particle interaction (WPI) is one of the most fundamental processes in plasma physics in which one most prominent example is the Landau damping. Owing to its excellent energy-exchange mechanism, the WPI has gained increasing interest not only from theoretical points of view but also its many important applications including plasma heating and plasma acceleration. In this review work, we present theoretical backgrounds of linear and nonlinear wave-particle interactions in quantum plasmas. Specifically, we focus on the wave-particle interactions for homogeneous plasma waves (i.e., waves with infinite extent rather than a localized pulse) as well as for propagating electrostatic waves in the weak and strong quantum regimes to demonstrate the modifications of several classical features including those associated with resonant and trapped particles. Finally, the future perspectives of WPI in quantum plasmas are presented.

Landau damping of electron-acoustic waves due to multi-plasmon resonances

The linear and nonlinear theories of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) are studied in a partially degenerate quantum plasma with two-temperature electrons and stationary ions. The initial equilibrium of electrons is assumed to be given by the Fermi-Dirac distribution at finite temperature. By employing the multi-scale asymptotic expansion technique to the one-dimensional Wigner-Moyal and Poisson equations, it is shown that the effects of multi-plasmon resonances lead to a modified complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with a new nonlocal nonlinearity. Besides giving rise to a nonlocal nonlinear term, the wave-particle resonance also modifies the local nonlinear coupling coefficient of the KdV equation. The latter is shown to conserve the number of particles, however, the wave energy decays with time. A careful analysis shows that the two-plasmon resonance is the dominant mechanism for nonlinear Landau damping of EAWs. An approximate soliton solution of the KdV equation is also obtained, and it is shown that the nonlinear Landau damping causes the wave amplitude to decay slowly with time compared to the classical theory.

Effects of group velocity and multi-plasmon resonances on the modulation of Langmuir waves in a degenerate plasma

We study the nonlinear wave modulation of Langmuir waves (LWs) in a fully degenerate plasma. Using the Wigner-Moyal equation coupled to the Poisson equation and the multiple scale expansion technique, a modified nonlocal nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is derived which governs the evolution of LW envelopes in degenerate plasmas. The nonlocal nonlinearity in the NLS equation appears due to the group velocity and multi-plasmon resonances, i.e., resonances induced by the simultaneous particle absorption of multiple wave quanta. We focus on the regime where the resonant velocity of electrons is larger than the Fermi velocity and thereby the linear Landau damping is forbidden. As a result, the nonlinear wave-particle resonances due to the group velocity and multi-plasmon processes are the dominant mechanisms for wave-particle interaction. It is found that in contrast to classical or semiclassical plasmas, the group velocity resonance does not necessarily give rise the wave damping in the strong quantum regime where $ \hbar k\sim mv_{F}$ with $\hbar$ denoting the reduced Planck's constant, $m$ the electron mass and $v_F$ the Fermi velocity, however, the three-plasmon process plays a dominant role in the nonlinear Landau damping of wave envelopes. In this regime, the decay rate of the wave amplitude is also found to be higher compared to that in the modest quantum regime where the multi-plasmon effects are forbidden.

Stability of two-dimensional ion-acoustic wave packets in quantum plasmas

The nonlinear propagation of two-dimensional (2D) quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) is studied in a quantum electron-ion plasma. By using a 2D quantum hydrodynamic model and the method of multiple scales, a new set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations is derived which governs the slow modulation of the 2D QIAW packets. The oblique modulational instability (MI) is then studied by means of a corresponding nonlinear Schroedinger equation derived from the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. It is shown that the quantum parameter H (proportional to $\hbar$), associated with the Bohm potential, shifts the MI domains around the $kθ$-plane, where $k$ is the carrier wave number and $θ$ is the angle of modulation. In particular, the ion-acoustic wave (IAW), previously known to be stable under parallel modulation in classical plasmas, is shown to be unstable in quantum plasmas. The growth rate of the MI is found to be quenched by the obliqueness of modulation. The modulation of 2D QIAW packets along $\mathbf{k}$ is shown to be described by a set of Davey-Stewartson-like equations. The latter can be studied for the 2D wave collapse in dense plasmas. The predicted results, which could be important to look for stable wave propagation in laboratory experiments as well as in dense astrophysical plasmas, thus generalize the theory of MI of IAW propagations both in classical and quantum electron-ion plasmas.
