Evading the CMB $\mu$-distortion bound on Supermassive Primordial Black Hole seeds with Non-Gaussian tails

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) powering quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$ are difficult to grow from stellar mass remnants, motivating seeds from primordial black holes (PBHs) with masses $10^5-10^7 M_{\odot}$. This range is constrained by the COBE/FIRAS bound on the CMB $\mu$-distortion, which limits the small-scale curvature variance to $\sigma_\zeta^2 \lesssim 10^{-4}$. For Gaussian perturbations, the variance fixes the far tail of the one-point probability distribution function (PDF), making the PBH abundance negligible. We call this the Gaussian barrier. The barrier can be evaded only if the variance probed by the distortion is decoupled from the tail probability controlling collapse. We implement this idea in the non-perturbative $\delta N$ formalism and relate asymptotic PDF tails to the global shape of the $\delta N$ map. Four Gaussian-cored families are analyzed: generalized-normal, stretched-exponential, power-law, and log-normal tails. After standardizing each family to unit variance, we impose the FIRAS cap and compute the distortion-limited PBH abundance in the tail-shape parameter space. The ordinary exponential tail produced by standard single-field non-attractor dynamics is still too light to reopen the seed window. Algebraic tails from fractional-potential dynamics, and sufficiently heavy log-normal tails treated as a phenomenological proxy for multiplicative dynamics, can supply seed-relevant abundances while respecting the distortion bound.

Sound Speed Resonance in the Gravitational Wave Background as a probe for non-standard early universe cosmologies

Gravitational waves constitute a powerful probe of the underlying theory of gravity. In extensions of general relativity, additional degrees of freedom, such as scalar fields in the gravitational sector, can modify their propagation through changes in the effective friction term and propagation speed. These modifications may potentially induce resonant phenomena leading to distinctive signatures in the gravitational wave spectrum. One important aspect to be investigated is whether the resonances can be strong enough to enhance the underlying background of primordial tensor modes to levels detectable by upcoming gravitational wave detectors, such as LISA or the Einstein telescope. The characteristic peaks in the SBGW spectrum depend on the parameters of the resonant model as well as on the parameters of the primordial tensor spectrum, such as $r$ and $n_{t}$. Thus these resonance effects open a powerful pathway to explore physics of the very early Universe by amplifying otherwise feeble signals to experimentally detectable levels. Here we analyze how the signals of the primordial Universe can resonate in these scenarios, bringing the early universe physics into the realm of experimental access.

Ultra-light dark matter with non-canonical kinetics reopening the mass window

Fuzzy dark matter (FDM) with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV is viewed as a promising paradigm in understanding the structure formation of the local universe at small scales. Recent observations, however, begin to challenge FDM in return. We focus on the arguments between the solution to CDM small-scale curiosities and recent observations on matter power spectrum, and find its implication on an earlier formation of small-scale structure. In this article, we propose a scheme of k-ULDM scalar field with a differently-evolving sound speed, thanks to the non-canonical kinetics. With the help of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theory, we illustrate to change the behavior of the quantum pressure term countering collapse, therefore change the history of structure growth. We find that it can truly reopen the ULDM mass window closed by the Lyman-$α$ problem. We will discuss such examples in this paper, while more possibilities remain to be explored.

A Compaction Function Analysis of CMB $μ$ distortion Constraints on Primordial Black Holes

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are considered viable candidates for dark matter and the seeds of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), with their fruitful physical influences providing significant insights into the conditions of the early Universe. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) $μ$ distortion tightly constrain the abundance of PBHs in the mass range of $10^4 \sim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ recently, limiting their potential to serve as seeds for the SMBHs observed. Given that $μ$ distortion directly constrain the primordial power spectrum, it is crucial to employ more precise methods in computing PBH abundance to strengthen the reliability of these constraints. By a Press-Schechter (PS) type method utilizing the compaction function, we find that the abundance of PBHs could be higher than previously estimated constraints from $μ$ distortion observations. Furthermore, our analysis shows that variations in the shape of the power spectrum have a negligible impact on our conclusions within the mass ranges under consideration. This conclusion provides us a perspective for further research on the constrain of PBH by $μ$ distortion.

Quasinormal modes of black holes in f(T) gravity

We calculate the quasinormal modes (QNM) frequencies of a test massless scalar field and an electromagnetic field around static black holes in $f(T)$ gravity. Focusing on quadratic $f(T)$ modifications, which is a good approximation for every realistic $f(T)$ theory, we first extract the spherically symmetric solutions using the perturbative method, imposing two ans$\ddot{\text{a}}$tze for the metric functions, which suitably quantify the deviation from the Schwarzschild solution. Moreover, we extract the effective potential, and then calculate the QNM frequency of the obtained solutions. Firstly, we numerically solve the Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger-like equation using the discretization method, and we extract the frequency and the time evolution of the dominant mode applying the function fit method. Secondly, we perform a semi-analytical calculation by applying the WKB method with the Pade approximation. We show that the results for $f(T)$ gravity are different compared to General Relativity, and in particular we obtain a different slope and period of the field decay behavior for different model parameter values. Hence, under the light of gravitational-wave observations of increasing accuracy from binary systems, the whole analysis could be used as an additional tool to test General Relativity and examine whether torsional gravitational modifications are possible.

Scalar and Tensor Perturbations in DHOST Bounce Cosmology

We investigate the bounce realization in the framework of DHOST cosmology, focusing on the relation with observables. We perform a detailed analysis of the scalar and tensor perturbations during the Ekpyrotic contraction phase, the bounce phase, and the fast-roll expansion phase, calculating the power spectra, the spectral indices, and the tensor to-scalar ratio. Furthermore, we study the initial conditions, incorporating perturbations generated by Ekpyrotic vacuum fluctuations, by matter vacuum fluctuations, and by thermal fluctuations. The scale invariance of the scalar power spectrum can be acquired by introducing a matter contraction phase before the Ekpyrotic phase or invoking a thermal gas as the source. The DHOST bounce scenario with cosmological perturbations generated by thermal fluctuations proves to be the most efficient one, and the corresponding predictions are in perfect agreement with observational bounds. Especially the tensor-to-scalar ratio is many orders of magnitude within the allowed region since it is suppressed by the Hubble parameter at the beginning of the bounce phase.

Emergent Universe and Genesis from the DHOST Cosmology

In this article, we present an emergent universe scenario that can be derived from DHOST cosmology. The universe starts asymptotically Minkowski in the far past just like the regular Galileon Genesis, but evolves to a radiation dominated period at the late stage, and therefore, the universe has a graceful exit which is absent in the regular Galileon Genesis. We analyze the behavior of cosmological perturbations and show that both the scalar and tensor modes are free from the gradient instability problem. We further analyze the primordial scalar spectrum generated in various situations and discuss whether a scale invariance can be achieved.

DHOST Bounce

We present a new class of nonsingular bounce cosmology free from instabilities, using a single scalar field coupled to gravity within the framework of the Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories. In this type of scenarios, the gradient instability that widely exists in nonsingular bounce cosmologies in the framework of scalar-tensor and Horndeski/Galileon theories is removed by the effects of new operators introduced by the DHOST, due to the modification that they later bring about to the dispersion relation of perturbations. Hence, our results demonstrate that there is indeed a loophole for this type of bounce scenarios to be free from pathologies when primordial perturbations evolve through the bounce phase, and thus the theoretical {\it no-go} theorem for nonsingular bounce cosmology of Horndeski/Galileon theories can be delicately evaded in DHOST extensions.

Warm Modified Chaplygin Gas Shaft Inflation

In this paper, we examine the possible realization of a new family of inflation called "shaft inflation" by assuming the modified Chaplygin gas model and tachyon scalar field. We also consider the special form of dissipative coefficient as $Γ={a_0}\frac{T^{3}}{ϕ^{2 }}$ and calculate the various inflationary parameters in the scenario of strong and weak dissipative regimes. In order to examine the behavior of inflationary parameters, the planes of $n_s - ϕ,~n_s - r$ and $n_s - α_s$ (where $n_s,~α_s,~r$ and $ϕ$ represent spectral index, its running, tensor to scalar ratio and scalar field respectively) are being developed which lead to the constraints: $r< 0.11$, $n_s=0.96\pm0.025$ and $α_s =-0.019\pm0.025$. It is quite interesting that these results of inflationary parameters are compatible with BICEP$2$, WMAP $(7+9)$ and recent Planck data.

Dynamics of Modified Chaplygin Gas Inflation on the Brane with Bulk Viscous Pressure

We investigate the role of bulk viscous pressure on the warm inflationary modified Chaplygin gas in brane-world framework in the presence of standard scalar field. We assume the intermediate inflationary scenario in strong dissipative regime and constructed the inflaton, potential, entropy density, slow-roll parameters, scalar and tensor power spectra, scalar spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio. We develop various trajectories such as $n_s - N$, $n_s - r$ and $n_s - α_s$ (where $n_s$ is the spectral index, $α_s$ is the running of spectral index, $N$ is the number of e-folds and $r$ is tensor-to-scalar ratio) for variable as well as constant dissipation and bulk viscous coefficients at high dissipative regime. It is interesting to remark here that our results of these parameters are compatible with recent observational data such as WMAP $7+9$, BICEP$2$ and Planck data.
