Rotating and spatially twisting Locally Rotationally Symmetric Spacetimes in f(R)-Gravity: a No-Go theorem

Recently, in a series of papers, we established the existence and found a general solution for the simultaneously rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes in general relativity, which can model inhomogeneous and dynamic astrophysical bodies. However, these spacetimes necessarily require imperfect fluids with entropy flux. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the existence of these spacetimes in generic f(R)-gravity models, where the entropy flux is generated purely by higher order curvature effects, while the standard matter still remains a perfect fluid. However, we transparently demonstrate here, that the symmetries of these spacetimes force the theory to be general relativity. This is a novel study that shows how the geometrical properties of a spacetime can be used to restrict the theories of gravity.

Inflationary f(R) cosmologies

This paper discusses a simple procedure to reconstruct f (R)-gravity models from exact cosmological solutions of the Einstein field equations with a noninteracting classical scalar field-and-radiation background. From the kind of inflationary scenario we want, we show how the potential functions can be obtained. We then show how an f (R) gravitational Lagrangian density that mimics the same cosmological expansion as the scalar field-driven inflation of General Relativity can be reconstructed. As a demonstration, we calculate the slow-roll parameters (the spectral index n s and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r) and compare them to the Planck data.

On $f(R)$ gravity in scalar-tensor theories

We study $f(R)$ gravity models in the language of scalar-tensor theories. The correspondence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories is revisited since $f(R)$ gravity is a subclass of Brans-Dicke models, with a vanishing coupling constant ($ω=0$). In this treatment, four $f(R)$ toy models are used to analyze the early-universe cosmology, when the scalar field $ϕ$ dominates over standard matter. We have obtained solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation for those models. It is found that for the first model $\left(f(R)=βR^{n}\right)$, as time increases the scalar field decreases and decays asymptotically. For the second model $\left(f(R)=αR+βR^{n}\right)$ it was found that the function $ϕ(t)$ crosses the $t$-axis at different values for different values of $β$. For the third model $\left(f(R)=R-\frac{ν^{4}}{R}\right)$, when the value of $ν$ is small the potential $V(ϕ)$ behaves like the standard inflationary potential. For the fourth model $\left(f(R)=R-(1-m)ν^{2}\Big(\frac{R}{ν^{2}}\Big)^{m}-2Λ\right)$, we show that there is a transition between $1.5 1.55$. The slow-roll approximation is applied to each of the four $f(R)$ models and we obtain the respective expressions for the spectral index $n_{s}$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$.

Reconstructing f(R) Gravity from a Chaplygin Scalar Field in de Sitter Spacetimes

We present a reconstruction technique for models of $f(R)$ gravity from the Chaplygin scalar field in flat de Sitter spacetimes. Exploiting the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories, and treating the Chaplygin gas as a scalar field model in a universe without conventional matter forms, the Lagrangian densities for the $f(R)$ action are derived. Exact $f(R)$ models and corresponding scalar field potentials are obtained for asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes in early and late cosmological expansion histories. It is shown that the reconstructed $f(R)$ models all have General Relativity as a limiting solution.

Integrability conditions of quasi-Newtonian cosmologies in modified gravity

We investigate the integrability conditions of a class of shear-free perfect-fluid cosmological models within the framework of anisotropic fluid sources, applying our results to f(R) dark energy models. Generalising earlier general relativistic results for time-like geodesics, we extend the potential and acceleration terms of the quasi-Newtonian formulation of integrable dust cosmological models about a linearized Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background and derive the equations that describe their dynamical evolutions. We show that in general, models with an anisotropic fluid source are not consistent, but because of the particular form the anisotropic stress takes in f(R) gravity, the general integrability conditions, in this case, are satisfied.

Chaplygin-gas Solutions of f(R) Gravity

We explore exact f(R) gravity solutions that mimic Chaplygin-gas inspired LCDM cosmology. Starting with the original and modified Chaplygin gas equations of state, we reconstruct the forms of f(R) Lagrangians. The resulting solutions are generally quadratic in the Ricci scalar, but have appropriate LCDM solutions in limiting cases. These solutions, given appropriate initial conditions, can be potential candidates for scalar field-driven early universe expansion (inflation) and dark energy-driven late-time cosmic acceleration.

Shear-free Anisotropic Cosmological Models in f(R) Gravity

We study a class of shear-free, homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models with imperfect matter sources in the context of f(R) gravity. We show that the anisotropic stresses are related to the electric part of the Weyl tensor in such a way that they balance each other. We also show that within the class of orthogonal f(R) models, small perturbations of shear are damped, and that the electric part of the Weyl tensor and the anisotropic stress tensor decay with the expansion as well as the heat flux of the curvature fluid. Specializing in locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes in orthonormal frames, we examine the late-time behaviour of the de Sitter universe in $f(R)$ gravity. For the Starobinsky model of f(R), we study the evolutionary behavior of the Universe by numerically integrating the Friedmann equation, where the initial conditions for the expansion, acceleration and jerk parameters are taken from observational data.

Irrotational-fluid cosmologies in fourth-order gravity

In this paper, we explore classes of irrotational-fluid cosmological models in the context of f(R)-gravity in an attempt to put some theoretical and mathematical restrictions on the form of the f(R) gravitational Lagrangian. In particular, we investigate the consistency of linearised dust models for shear-free cases as well as in the limiting cases when either the gravito-magnetic or gravito-elecric components of the Weyl tensor vanish. We also discuss the existence and consistency of classes of non-expanding irrotational spacetimes in f(R)-gravity.

Breaking the cosmological background degeneracy by two-fluid perturbations in f(R) gravity

One of the exact solutions of f(R) theories of gravity in the presence of different forms of matter exactly mimics the LCDM solution of general relativity at the background level. In this work we study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the covariant and gauge-invariant formalism and show that although the background in such a model is indistinguishable from the standard LCDM cosmology, this degeneracy is broken at the level of first-order perturbations. This is done by predicting different rates of structure formation in LCDM and the f(R) model both in the complete and quasi\hs static regimes.

Anti-Newtonian cosmologies in f(R) gravity

In this paper, we investigate a class of perfect-fluid "anti-Newtonian" cosmological models in the context of f(R) gravity. In particular, we study the integrability conditions of such gravity models using covariant consistency analysis formalisms. We show that, unlike the results in General Relativity, anti-Newtonian cosmologies are not silent models and that they can exist subject to the solution of an integrability condition equation we derive. We also present the set of evolution equations governing the linear perturbations of matter, expansion and Ricci scalar for this class of models.

Large Scale Structure Constraints for a Class of f(R) Theories of Gravity

Over the last few years much attention has been given to the study of modified gravity theories in order to find a more natural explanation for the late time acceleration of the Universe. Nevertheless, a comparison of the matter power spectrum predictions made by these theories with available data has not yet been subjected to a detailed analysis. In the context of f(R) theories of gravity we study the predicted power spectra using both a dynamical systems approach for the background and solving for the matter perturbations without using the quasi-static approximation, comparing the theoretical results with several SDSS data. The importance of studying the first order perturbed equations by assuming the correct background evolution and the relevance of the initial conditions are also stressed. We determine the statistical significance in relation to the observational data and demonstrate their conflict with existing observations.

Covariant gauge-invariant perturbations in multifluid f(R) gravity

We study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the (1+3)- covariant gauge-invariant formalism for generic $f(R)$ theories of gravity. Extending previous works, we give a complete set of equations describing the evolution of matter and curvature fluctuations for a multi-fluid cosmological medium. We then specialize to a radiation-dust fluid described by barotropic equations of state and solve the perturbation equations around a background solution of $R^{n}$ gravity. In particular we study exact solutions for scales much smaller and much larger than the Hubble radius and show that $n>2/3$ in order to have a growth rate compatible with the Mészáros effect.

On Shear-free perturbations of f(R) gravity

Recently it was shown that if the matter congruence of a general relativistic perfect fluid flow in an almost FLRW universe is shear-free, then it must be either expansion or rotation-free. Here we generalize this result for a general f(R) theory of gravity and show there exist scenarios where this result can be avoided. This suggests that there are situations where linearized forth-order gravity shares properties with Newtonian theory not valid in General Relativity.
