Equilibrium Statistics as Conditional Laws and Conservation-Induced Correlations

We present a novel unified conditional-probability framework for relativistic systems in which conditioning on additive conservation laws simultaneously yields equilibrium occupation statistics and conservation-induced correlations. In this formulation, equilibrium arises as a conditional limit law of a closed system. The one-mode marginal gives Maxwell--Boltzmann, Bose--Einstein, and Fermi--Dirac statistics at leading saddle order, with the conserved quantities fixing the exponential tilt and the microscopic occupation measure determining the statistics. Expanding the two-mode marginal to Gaussian order gives the leading finite-rank covariance between modes induced by exact conservation. When contracted with observables linear in mode occupations, this covariance gives their leading exact-conservation contribution. We use this structure to define projected observables orthogonal to selected conserved quantities. By construction, their covariance has no leading exact-conservation contribution. In small collision systems, where conservation effects are less suppressed by multiplicity and can survive standard nonflow suppressions, this provides a direct way to isolate conservation-aligned contributions to long-range correlations. We demonstrate this with PYTHIA8/Angantyr-generated p+Pb events at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$ by comparing ordinary and projected covariances, showing that the projection removes the conservation-aligned contribution while leaving the conservation-orthogonal covariance essentially unchanged.

Spin dynamics and polarization in relativistic systems: recent developments

We review recent theoretical and experimental developments in spin dynamics and polarization phenomena in relativistic systems, with a particular focus on heavy-ion collisions. The large angular momentum and magnetic field generated in non-central collisions induce vorticity in the quark-gluon plasma, leading to observable spin polarization of emitted hadrons. We discuss the theoretical foundations of spin polarization arising from spin-vorticity coupling, including formulations based on relativistic hydrodynamics, kinetic theory, and quantum statistical approaches such as the Zubarev density operator. A central theme of the review is the role of pseudo-gauge freedom and its implications for defining energy-momentum and spin tensors, which can influence theoretical predictions of polarization observables. We further examine different formulations of spin hydrodynamics, emphasizing the impact of gradient expansions, spin chemical potential, and entropy-current analysis on the structure of the theory and associated transport coefficients. In addition, we discuss the recent developments in heavy flavor spin dynamics within the framework of rotational Brownian motion, where spin degrees of freedom undergo stochastic evolution due to interactions with the medium. This framework provides a complementary perspective on spin relaxation and diffusion by incorporating the effects of strong initial magnetic fields and establishes connections between spin polarization and the initial geometry through the definition of polarization harmonics. This review provides a comprehensive overview of relativistic spin hydrodynamics as well as non-equilibrium spin dynamics, and outlines future directions toward a consistent and predictive description of spin phenomena in strongly interacting matter.

Quantum spin dynamics of heavy quarks and polarization observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We develop a quantum spin-density-matrix framework for heavy-quark spin dynamics in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Starting from an initial polarization induced along the magnetic-field direction, we derive the evolution equation for spin polarization within this framework and obtain analytic solutions. The evolved polarization is connected to open heavy-flavor observables via a fragmentation-based hadronization prescription. For vector mesons, the spin-alignment parameter $\rho_{00}$ is constructed by coupling the heavy-quark spin to that of the light antiquark produced during fragmentation. We confront our results with recent ALICE measurements of prompt $D^{*+}$ spin alignment in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02~{\rm TeV}$ and extract an effective depolarization strength that determines the spin-relaxation time scale. Using this fitted parameter, we provide benchmark estimates for $\Lambda_c^+$ and $\bar{\Lambda}_c^-$ polarization, up to an overall spin-transfer normalization. We further estimate the recently proposed elliptic polarization harmonic arising from path-length-dependent depolarization in an anisotropic fireball.

Dissipative spin hydrodynamics in Bjorken flow and thermal dilepton production

We investigate the boost-invariant expansion of a recently developed first-order spin hydrodynamic framework in which the spin chemical potential is treated as a leading-order hydrodynamic variable. Considering a symmetric energy-momentum tensor and a separately conserved spin tensor, we derive the coupled evolution equations for the medium temperature and the independent components of the spin chemical potential in the presence of both viscous and spin-diffusive transport coefficients. For a boost-invariant system, only the magnetic-like components of the spin chemical potential survive, and their evolution is shown to depend sensitively on the spin transport coefficients. The transverse spin components decay more rapidly due to spin dissipation, while the longitudinal component survives for a longer duration. We further demonstrate that the evolution of the spin degrees of freedom modifies the temperature profile of the expanding medium. Using the resulting temperature profiles, we calculate thermal dilepton production rates from quark-antiquark annihilation. We find that the presence of spin dynamics enhances the dilepton yield relative to standard dissipative hydrodynamics, with the magnitude of the enhancement depending on the spin transport coefficients. Our results indicate that thermal dileptons can provide an indirect probe of spin dynamics and spin transport in the quark-gluon plasma.

Hyperon longitudinal polarization and vector meson spin alignment in a thermal model for heavy-ion collisions

The concept of a common local spin equilibrium for both spin-1/2 and spin-1 particles is incorporated into a thermal model of particle production in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. We show that an effective spin polarization tensor leading to a correct description of the longitudinal spin polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons simultaneously yields a positive alignment of vector mesons ($\phi$ and $K^{*0}$) that grows monotonically with transverse momentum and centrality. Similar trends can be seen in the data, suggesting a possible common mechanism for longitudinal spin polarization and alignment. However, model calculations are insufficient to explain the data in a fully quantitative way. The correlation found between the magnitude of the $\Lambda$ longitudinal polarization and vector meson alignment suggests further more elaborate investigations of this issue.

Heavy quark polarization anisotropy as a novel probe of fireball geometry

We propose a new approach to probe the initial fireball geometry in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using spin polarization. Specifically, we introduce polarization harmonics of open heavy hadrons as a novel observable sensitive to geometric anisotropies. Heavy quarks are produced in early hard scatterings and can acquire spin polarization from the strong, transient electromagnetic fields present at early times. As they propagate through the anisotropic quark-gluon plasma, medium-induced interactions lead to path-length dependent depolarization, imprinting an azimuthally anisotropic polarization pattern. Within the framework of rotational Brownian motion, we show that the resulting polarization harmonics are directly related to the initial spatial eccentricities, thereby establishing heavy-flavor polarization anisotropies as a sensitive and complementary probe of the early-time collision geometry. We present quantitative estimates of the second (elliptic) polarization harmonic associated with the recently observed $D^{*+}$ spin alignment reported by the ALICE Collaboration.

Polarized tau decay and CP violation in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the role of $\tau$-lepton polarization in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions (UPCs) as a novel application of the intense electromagnetic fields generated in such processes. In particular, we analyze the decay distributions of polarized $\tau$-leptons produced via photon-photon fusion, focusing on both leptonic and semi-leptonic channels. We show that the external magnetic field present in UPCs induces a preferred spin quantization axis, which modifies the angular and energy distributions of $\tau$ decay products relative to the standard helicity frame. By formulating the spin polarization along the magnetic field direction, we derive modified polarization-sensitive observables and demonstrate how kinematic selections can retain nonvanishing polarization signals even after ensemble averaging. Furthermore, we propose that the relative polarization of $\tau^-$ and $\tau^+$, accessible through complementary angular ranges of their decay products, serves as a sensitive observable for potential CP-violating effects. This framework provides a pathway for future experimental studies at the LHC and future colliders to exploit polarized $\tau$ decays in UPCs as an application of the strong electromagnetic fields to probe new sources of CP violation.

Thermo-coalescence model for Light Nuclei production in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We employ a hybrid approach to describe the light nuclei production mechanism where the nucleons are assumed to be thermally produced, and are allowed to form light nuclei using a coalescence prescription. In this approach, we first fit transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) distribution of nucleons using hydro-inspired boost-invariant blast-wave model. The extracted parameters are then used to describe the deuteron $p_{T}$ spectra, along with two additional parameters that characterize the coalescence prescription employed in this study. We refer this combined approach as ``thermo-coalescence model'' and it is designed to study the deuteron production and describe the experimental measurements. In this work, we analyze the measured $p_{T}$ distribution of protons and deuterons from Pb-Pb collisions at the ALICE Collaboration at LHC. We also evaluate the $p_{T}$-integrated deuteron yields using this approach and compare with experimental measurements. A Bayesian inference framework is employed to determine the best-fit parameters of the thermo-coalescence model. Finally, we estimate the traditionally used experimental coalescence parameter ($B_{A}$) within our framework in order to establish a connection between our model and the conventional coalescence approach commonly used to relate experimental data with theoretical descriptions of light nuclei production.

Rotational Brownian motion and heavy quark polarization in QCD medium

We consider the rotational Brownian motion of heavy quark in QCD medium and provide analytical results for polarization of open heavy-flavor hadrons. We calculate expressions for vector and tensor polarization, corresponding to baryon spin polarization and vector meson spin alignment, respectively. Assuming that heavy quarks are initially fully spin polarized along the direction of magnetic field, we compare our results with recent experimental data from ALICE collaboration for $D^{*+}$ meson and provide predictions for spin polarization of open charm baryons. We propose that the transverse momentum dependence of heavy quark polarization may serve as a distinctive signature of the intense initial magnetic field generated in off-central relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Dynamics of Hot QCD Matter 2024 -- Bulk Properties

The second Hot QCD Matter 2024 conference at IIT Mandi focused on various ongoing topics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, encompassing theoretical and experimental perspectives. This proceedings volume includes 19 contributions that collectively explore diverse aspects of the bulk properties of hot QCD matter. The topics encompass the dynamics of electromagnetic fields, transport properties, hadronic matter, spin hydrodynamics, and the role of conserved charges in high-energy environments. These studies significantly enhance our understanding of the complex dynamics of hot QCD matter, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed in high-energy nuclear collisions. Advances in theoretical frameworks, including hydrodynamics, spin dynamics, and fluctuation studies, aim to improve theoretical calculations and refine our knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting matter. Experimental efforts, such as those conducted by the ALICE and STAR collaborations, play a vital role in validating these theoretical predictions and deepening our insight into the QCD phase diagram, collectivity in small systems, and the early-stage behavior of strongly interacting matter. Combining theoretical models with experimental observations offers a comprehensive understanding of the extreme conditions encountered in relativistic heavy-ion and proton-proton collisions.

Quasiparticle second-order dissipative hydrodynamics at finite chemical potential

We extend the derivation of second-order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics to incorporate the effects of baryon current, a non-vanishing chemical potential, and a realistic equation of state. Starting from a microscopic quantum theory, we employ a quasiparticle approximation to describe the evolution of hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and establish its connection to the Wigner formalism. Using methods from relativistic kinetic theory, we perform a second-order expansion to derive a closed set of equations for the components of the stress-energy tensor and the baryon current. The resulting transport coefficients, which depend on the equation of state, are obtained through a unified prescription that ensures thermodynamic consistency.

Energy-momentum correlators of fermions at finite temperature and density

Equal-time commutators of different components of the energy-momentum tensor at spatially separated points are calculated for a relativistic quantum Fermi gas at finite temperature and density. Different definitions of such components, also known as different pseudogauges, are used and smeared with a Gaussian profile characterized by the width $\sigma$. In this way, we introduce observables that may represent measurements of energy and momentum in a spatial region of size $\sigma$. We find that the obtained commutators are sensitive to the pseudogauge chosen if the probed systems or the spatial separation are small. The pseudogauge dependence is expected as different quantum operators are analyzed in this case. On the other hand, we find that for sufficiently large probed systems or with large separation, the studied commutators are pseudogauge independent.

Spin-hydrodynamics of electrons in graphene and magnetization due to thermal vorticity

We examine the framework of relativistic spin-hydrodynamics in the context of electron hydrodynamics in graphene. We develop a spin-hydrodynamic model for a (2 + 1)-dimensional system of fermions under the condition of small spin polarization. Our analysis confirms that thermal vorticity, which satisfies the global equilibrium condition, is also a solution to the spin-hydrodynamic equations. Additionally, we calculate the magnetization of the system in global equilibrium and introduce a novel phenomenon - thermovortical magnetization - resulting from thermal vorticity, which can be experimentally observed in graphene.

Effects of strangeness on the chiral pseudocritical line

Within a 2+1 flavor Nambu\textendash Jona-Lasinio model, we calculate the curvature coefficients and check them against available lattice QCD estimations. With the observation that the flavor mixing due to the `t Hooft determinant term significantly affects the $κ_{2}^{S}$, we explore the effect of $μ_{S}$ on the $T-μ_{B}$ crossover lines. With the novel determination of negative $κ_{2}^{B}$ at large $μ_{S}$, we advocate the importance of studying the same in lattice QCD.

Causal third-order viscous hydrodynamics within relaxation-time approximation

In the present work, we derive a linearly stable and causal theory of relativistic third-order viscous hydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation with relaxation-time approximation. We employ viscous correction to the distribution function obtained using a Chapman-Enskog like iterative solution of the Boltzmann equation. Our derivation highlights the necessity of incorporating a new dynamical degree of freedom, specifically an irreducible tensors of rank three, within this framework. This differs from the recent formulation of causal third-order theory from the method of moments which requires two dynamical degrees of freedom: an irreducible third-rank and a fourth-rank tensor. We verify the linear stability and causality of the proposed formulation by examining perturbations around a global equilibrium state.

Longitudinal spin polarization in a thermal model with dissipative corrections

In this work, we address the problem of longitudinal spin polarization of the $Λ$ hyperons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We combine a relativistic kinetic-theory framework that includes spin degrees of freedom treated in a classical way with the freeze-out parametrization used in previous investigations. The use of the kinetic theory allows us to incorporate dissipative corrections (due to the thermal shear and gradients of thermal vorticity) into the Pauli-Lubanski vector that determines spin polarization and can be directly compared with the experimental data. As in earlier similar studies, it turns out that a successful description of data can only be achieved with additional assumptions -- in our case, they involve the use of projected thermal vorticity and a suitably adjusted time for spin relaxation ($τ_s$). From our analysis, we find that $τ_s \sim 5$ fm/$c$, which is comparable with other estimates.

Diffusion coefficient matrix for multiple conserved charges: a Kubo approach

The strongly interacting matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions possesses several conserved quantum numbers, such as baryon number, strangeness, and electric charge. The diffusion process of these charges can be characterized by a diffusion matrix that describes the mutual influence of the diffusion of various charges. We derive the Kubo relations for evaluating diffusion coefficients as elements of a diffusion matrix. We further demonstrate that in the weak coupling limit, the diffusion matrix elements obtained through Kubo relations reduce to those obtained from kinetic theory with an appropriate identification of the relaxation times. We illustrate this evaluation in a toy model of two interacting scalar fields with two conserved charges.

Quasiparticle Cosmology

We consider thermodynamics of the Universe within a quasiparticle approach where the collective dynamics of a system is governed by the thermal mass of the constituents. The spacetime dependence of this thermal mass leads to a negative contribution to the pressure and a positive contribution to the energy density, similar to the effect due to dark energy. We propose a mechanism based on thermodynamic arguments to quantify this contribution from the thermal vacuum of the system. For a sufficiently large spacetime variation of the thermal mass, the effective pressure can become negative and could mimic a dark energy equation of state. We validate our framework using results from renormalizable interacting scalar field theory and demonstrate an application on QCD axion.
