Charm as a domain wall fermion in quenched lattice QCD

We report a study describing the charm quark by a domain-wall fermion (DWF) in lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our study uses a quenched gauge ensemble with the DBW2 rectangle-improved gauge action at a lattice cutoff of $a^{-1} \sim 3$ GeV. We calculate masses of heavy-light (charmed) and heavy-heavy (charmonium) mesons with spin-parity $J^P = 0^\mp$ and $1^\mp$, leptonic decay constants of the charmed pseudoscalar mesons ($D$ and $D_s$), and the $D^0$-$\bar{D^0}$ mixing parameter. The charm quark mass is found to be $m^{\bar{\rm MS}}_{c}(m_{c})=1.24(1)(18)$ GeV. The mass splittings in charmed-meson parity partners $Δ_{q,J=0}$ and $Δ_{q, J=1}$ are degenerate within statistical errors, in accord with experiment, and they satisfy a relation $Δ_{q=ud, J} > Δ_{q=s, J}$, also consistent with experiment. A C-odd axial vector charmonium state, $h_c), lies 22(11) MeV above the $χ_{c1}$ meson, or $m_{h_{c}} = 3533(11)_{\rm stat.}$ MeV using the experimental $χ_{c1}) mass. However, in this regard, we emphasize significant discrepancies in the calculation of hyperfine splittings on the lattice. The leptonic decay constants of $D$ and $D_s$ mesons are found to be $f_D=232(7)_{\rm stat.}(^{+6}_{-0})_{\rm chiral}(11)_{\rm syst.}$ MeV and $f_{D_s}/f_{D} = 1.05(2)_{\rm stat.}(^{+0}_{-2})_{\rm chiral}(2)_{\rm syst.}$, where the first error is statistical, the second a systematic due to chiral extrapolation and the third error combination of other known systematics. The $D^0$-$\bar{D^0}$ mixing bag parameter, which enters the $ΔC = 2$ transition amplitude, is found to be $B_D(2{GeV})=0.845(24)_{\rm stat.}(^{+24}_{-6})_{\rm chiral}(105)_{\rm syst.}$.

Neutrino masses, mixing and leptogenesis in a two Higgs doublet model for the third generation

We examine neutrino oscillations in a two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) in which the second doublet couples only to the third generation right-handed up-fermions, i.e., to t_R and to N_3 which is the heaviest right-handed Majorana neutrino. The inherently large tan(beta) of this model can naturally account for the large top mass and, based on a quark-lepton similarity ansatz, when embedded into a seesaw mechanism it can also account for the observed neutrino masses and mixing angles giving a very small θ_{13}: -0.017 < θ_{13} < 0.021 at 99% CL, and a very restrictive prediction for the atmospheric mixing angle: 42.9^0 < θ_{atm} < 45.2^0 at 99% CL. The large value of tan(beta) also sets the mass scale of the heaviest right-handed Majorana neutrino N_3 and triggers successful leptogenesis through a CP-asymmetry in the decays of the N_1 (lightest right-handed Majorana) which is tan^2(beta) enhanced compared to the CP-asymmetry obtained in models for leptogenesis with one Higgs doublet or in the MSSM. This enhancement allows us to relax the lower bound on M_{N_1} and consequently also the lower bound on the reheating temperature of the early universe.

Determination of gamma from charmless B^+/- -> M^0 M^+/- decays using U-spin

U-spin multiplet approach is applied to the full set of charmless hadronic B+/- --> M0 M+/- decays for the purpose of precise extraction of the unitarity angle gamma. Each of the four data sets, P0 P+/-, P0 V+/-, V0 P+/- and V0 V+/-, with P = pseudoscalar and V = vector, can be used to yield a precise value of gamma. The crucial advantage of this method over the common SU(3) symmetry based quark-diagrammatic approach is that no assumptions regarding relative sizes of topological decay amplitudes need to be made. As a result, this method avoids an uncontrollable theoretical uncertainty that is related to the neglect of some topological diagrams (e.g., exchange and annihilation graphs) in the SU(3) approach. Application of the U-spin approach to the current data yields: gamma=54^{+12}_{-11} degrees. We find that improved measurements of phi pi+/- and K*0bar K+/- branching ratios would lead to appreciably better extraction of gamma. In this method, which is completely data driven, in a few years we should be able to obtain a model independent determination of gamma with an accuracy of O(few degrees).

"Seesawing" away the hierarchy problem

We describe a model for the scalar sector where all interactions occur either at an ultra-high scale L_U ~ 10^16 - 10^19 GeV or at an intermediate scale L_I=10^9 - 10^11 GeV. The interaction of physics on these two scales results in an SU(2) Higgs condensate at the electroweak (EW) scale, L_EW, through a seesaw-like Higgs mechanism, L_EW ~ (L_I)^2/L_U, while the breaking of the SM SU(2)XU(1) gauge symmetry occurs at the intermediate scale L_I. The EW scale is, therefore, not fundamental but is naturally generated in terms of ultra-high energy phenomena and so the hierarchy problem is alleviated. We show that our ``seesaw-Higgs'' model predicts the existence of sub-eV neutrino masses which are generated through a ``two-step'' seesaw mechanism in terms of the same two ultra-high scales: m_nu ~ (L_I)^4/(L_U)^3 ~ (L_EW)^2/L_U. We also show that our seesaw Higgs model can be naturally embedded in theories with tiny extra dimensions of size R ~ 1/L_U ~ 10^{-16} fm, where the seesaw induced EW scale arises from a violation of a symmetry at a distant brane if there are 7 tiny extra dimensions.

Neutrinos in a left-right model with a horizontal symmetry

We analyze the lepton sector of a Left-Right Model based on the gauge group SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1), concentrating mainly on neutrino properties. Using the seesaw mechanism and a horizontal symmetry, we keep the right-handed symmetry breaking scale relatively low, while simultaneously satisfying phenomenological constraints on the light neutrino masses. We take the right-handed scale to be of order 10's of TeV and perform a full numerical analysis of the model's parameter space, subject to experimental constraints on neutrino masses and mixings. The numerical procedure yields results for the right-handed neutrino masses and mixings and the various CP-violating phases. We also discuss phenomenological applications of the model to neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton-flavor-violating decays (including decays such as τ\to 3μ) and leptogenesis.

CP-violating asymmetries in B^0 decays to K^+K^-K_{S(L)}^0 and K_S^0K_S^0K_{S(L)}^0

Decay rates and time-dependent and direct CP asymmetries in the decays $B^0\to K^+K^-K_{S(L)}$ and $K_S K_S K_{S(L)}$ are studied. Resonant and nonresonant contributions to the three-body decays are carefully investigated. Nonresonant effects on 2-body and 3-body matrix elements are constrained by QCD counting rules. The predicted branching ratios are consistent with the data within the theoretical and experimental errors, though the theoretical central values are somewhat smaller than the experimental ones. Owing to the presence of color-allowed tree amplitudes in $B^0\to K^+K^-K_{S(L)}$, this penguin-dominated mode is subject to a significant tree pollution and the deviation of the mixing-induced \CP asymmetry from that measured in $B\to J/ψK_S$, namely, $Δ\sin 2β_{K^+K^-K_{S(L)}}\equiv \sin 2β_{K^+K^-K_{S(L)}}-\sin 2 β_{J/ψK_S}$, can be as large as O(0.10). In contrast, the $K_SK_SK_{S(L)}$ modes appear theoretically very clean in our picture with negligible $Δ\sin 2β_{K_SK_SK_{S(L)}}$. Direct CP asymmetries in $K^+K^-K_{S(L)}$ and $K_S K_S K_{S(L)}$ modes are found to be very small.

CP Violation Highlights: Circa 2005

Recent highlights in CP violation phenomena are reviewed. B-factory results imply that CP-violation phase in the CKM matrix is the dominant contributor to the observed CP violation in K and B-physics. Deviations from the predictions of the CKM-paradigm due to beyond the Standard Model CP-odd phase are likely to be a small perturbation. Therefore, large data sample of clean B's will be needed. Precise determination of the unitarity triangle, along with time dependent CP in penguin dominated hadronic and radiative modes are discussed. Null tests in B, K and top-physics and separate determination of the K-unitarity triangle are also emphasized.

Seesaw induced electroweak scale, the hierarchy problem and sub-eV neutrino masses

We describe a model for the scalar sector where all interactions occur either at an ultra-high scale L_U ~ 10^{16}-10^{19} GeV or at an intermediate scale L_I ~ 10^{9}-10^{11} GeV. The interaction of physics on these two scales results in an SU(2) Higgs condensate at the electroweak (EW) scale, L_{EW}, through a seesaw-like Higgs mechanism, L_{EW} ~ L_I^2/L_U, while the breaking of the SM SU(2)XU(1) gauge symmetry occurs at the intermediate scale L_I. The EW scale is, therefore, not fundamental but is naturally generated in terms of ultra-high energy phenomena and so the hierarchy problem is alleviated. We show that the class of such ``seesaw Higgs'' models predict the existence of sub-eV neutrino masses which are generated through a ``two-step'' seesaw mechanism in terms of the same two ultra-high scales: m_nu ~ L_I^4/L_U^3 ~ L_{EW}^2/L_U. The neutrinos can be either Dirac or Majorana, depending on the structure of the scalar potential. We also show that our seesaw Higgs model can be naturally embedded in theories with tiny extra dimensions of size R ~ 1/L_U ~ 10^{-16} fm, where the seesaw induced EW scale arises from a violation of a symmetry at a distant brane; in particular, in the scenario presented there are 7 tiny extra dimensions.

Effects of Final-state Interactions on Mixing-induced CP Violation in Penguin-dominated B Decays

Motivated by the recent indications of the possibility of sizable deviations of the mixing-induced CP violation parameter, $S_f$, in the penguin-dominated $b\to sq\bar q$ transition decays such as $B^0\to (ϕ,ω,ρ^0,η',η,π^0,f_0)K_S$ from $\sin 2β$ determined from $B\to J/ψK_S$, we study final-state rescattering effects on their decay rates and CP violation. Recent observations of large direct CP asymmetry in modes such as $B^0\to K^+π^-,ρ^-π^+$ means that final state phases in 2-body B decays may not be small. It is therefore important to examine these long-distance effects on penguin-dominated decays. Such long-distance effects on $S_f$ are found to be generally small [i.e. ${\cal O}(1-2%)$] or negligible except for the $ωK_S$ and $ρ^0K_S$ modes where $S_f$ is lowered by around 15% for the former and increased by the same percentage for the latter. However, final-state rescattering can enhance the $ωK_S, ϕK_S, η'K_S, ρ^0K_S$ and $π^0K_S$ rates significantly and flip the signs of direct CP asymmetries of the last two modes. Direct CP asymmetries in $ωK_S$ and $ρ^0K_S$ channels are predicted to be $\A_{ωK_S}\approx -0.13$ and $\A_{ρ^0K_S}\approx 0.47$, respectively. However, direct CP asymmetry in all the other $b\to s$ penguin dominated modes that we study is found to be rather small (a few percents), rendering these modes a viable place to search for the CP-odd phases beyond the standard model.

Mixing-Induced CP Violation in B -> P_1 P_2 gamma in Search of Clean New Physics Signals

We show that in a decay of the form B_d or B_s-> P_1 P_2 gamma (where P_1 and P_2 are pseudoscalar mesons), through a flavor changing dipole transition, time dependent oscillations can reveal the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model. If P_1 and P_2 are CP eigenstates (e.g. as in B_d -> K_S pi0 gamma), the oscillation is independent of the resonance structure. Thus data from resonances as well as from nonresonant decays can be included. This may significantly enhance the sensitivity to new physics of the method. If P_1 is a charged particle, and P_2 its anti-particle (e.g. as in B_d -> pi+ pi- gamma), one has the additional advantage that both the magnitude and the weak phase of any new physics contribution can be determined from a study of the angular distribution. These signals offer excellent ways to detect new physics because they are suppressed in the Standard Model. We also show that the potential contamination of these signals originating from the Standard Model annihilation diagram gives rise to photons with, to a very good approximation, the same helicity as the dominant penguin graph and thus causes no serious difficulty.

Lattice extraction of $ K \to ππ$ amplitudes to NLO in partially quenched and in full chiral perturbation theory

We show that it is possible to construct $ε^\prime/ε$ to NLO using partially quenched chiral perturbation theory (PQChPT) from amplitudes that are computable on the lattice. We demonstrate that none of the needed amplitudes require three-momentum on the lattice for either the full theory or the partially quenched theory; non-degenerate quark masses suffice. Furthermore, we find that the electro-weak penguin ($ΔI=3/2$ and 1/2) contributions to $ε^\prime/ε$ in PQChPT can be determined to NLO using only degenerate ($m_K=m_π$) $K\toπ$ computations without momentum insertion. Issues pertaining to power divergent contributions, originating from mixing with lower dimensional operators, are addressed. Direct calculations of $K\toππ$ at unphysical kinematics are plagued with enhanced finite volume effects in the (partially) quenched theory, but in simulations when the sea quark mass is equal to the up and down quark mass the enhanced finite volume effects vanish to NLO in PQChPT. In embedding the QCD penguin left-right operator onto PQChPT an ambiguity arises, as first emphasized by Golterman and Pallante. With one version (the "PQS") of the QCD penguin, the inputs needed from the lattice for constructing $K\toππ$ at NLO in PQChPT coincide with those needed for the full theory. Explicit expressions for the finite logarithms emerging from our NLO analysis to the above amplitudes are also given.

Final State Interactions in Hadronic B Decays

There exist many experimental indications that final-state interactions (FSIs) may play a prominent role not only in charmful B decays but also in charmless B ones. We examine the final-state rescattering effects on the hadronic B decay rates and their impact on direct CP violation. The color-suppressed neutral modes such as $B^0\to D^0π^0,π^0π^0,ρ^0π^0,K^0π^0$ can be substantially enhanced by long-distance rescattering effects. The direct CP-violating partial rate asymmetries in charmless B decays to $ππ/πK$ and $ρπ$ are significantly affected by final-state rescattering and their signs are generally different from that predicted by the short-distance approach. For example, direct CP asymmetry in $B^0\toρ^0π^0$ is increased to around 60% due to final state rescattering effects whereas the short-distance picture gives about 1%. Evidence of direct CP violation in the decay $\bar B^0\to K^-π^+$ is now established, while the combined BaBar and Belle measurements of $\bar B^0\toρ^\pmπ^\mp$ imply a $3.6σ$ direct CP asymmetry in the $ρ^+π^-$ mode. Our predictions for CP violation agree with experiment in both magnitude and sign, whereas the QCD factorization predictions seem to have some difficulty with the data. Current data on $πK$ modes seem to violate the isospin sum rule relation, suggesting the presence of electroweak penguin contributions. We have also investigated whether a large transverse polarization in $B\to ϕK^*$ can arise from the final-state rescattering of $D^{(*)}\bar D_s^{(*)}$ into $ϕK^*$.

Search for New Physics at a Super-B Factory

The importance of a Super-B Factory in the search for New Physics, in particular, due to CP-od phase(s) from physics beyond the Standard Model is surveyed. The first point to emphasize is that we know now how to directly measure all three angles of the unitarity triangle very cleanly, {\it i.e. without theoretical assumptions} with {\it irreducible theory error $ \lsim 1%$}; however this requires much more luminosity than is currently available at B-factories. Direct searches via penguin-dominated hadronic modes as well as radiative, pair-leptonic and semi-leptonic decays are also discussed. {\bf Null tests of the SM} are stressed as these will play a crucial role especially if the effects of BSM phase(s) on B-physics are small.

B-factory Signals for a Warped Extra Dimension

We study predictions for B-physics in a class of models, recently introduced, with a non-supersymmetric warped extra dimension. In these models few ($\sim 3$) TeV Kaluza-Klein masses are consistent with electroweak data due to bulk custodial symmetry. Furthermore, there is an analog of GIM mechanism which is violated by the heavy top quark (just as in SM) leading to striking signals at $B$-factories:(i) New Physics (NP) contributions to $ΔF= 2$ transitions are comparable to SM. This implies that, within this NP framework, the success of SM unitarity triangle fit is a ``coincidence'' Thus, clean extractions of unitarity angles via e.g. $B \to ππ,ρπ, ρρ, DK$ are likely to be affected, in addition to O(1) deviation from SM prediction in $B_s$ mixing. (ii) O(1) deviation from SM predictions for $B \to X_s l^+ l^-$ in rate as well as in forward-backward and direct CP asymmetry. (iii) Large mixing-induced CP asymmetry in radiative B decays, wherein the SM unamibgously predicts very small asymmetries. Also with KK masses 3 TeV or less, and with anarchic Yukawa masses, contributions to electric dipole moments of the neutron are roughly 20 times larger than the current experimental bound so that this framework has a "CP problem".

Flavor Structure of Warped Extra Dimension Models

We recently showed, in hep-ph/0406101, that warped extra dimensional models with bulk custodial symmetry and few TeV KK masses lead to striking signals at $B$-factories. In this paper, using a spurion analysis, we systematically study the flavor structure of models that belong to the above class. In particular we find that the profiles of the zero modes, which are similar in all these models, essentially control the underlying flavor structure. This implies that our results are robust and model independent in this class of models. We discuss in detail the origin of the signals in B-physics. We also briefly study other NP signatures that arise in rare K decays ($K \to πνν$), in rare top decays [$t \to c γ(Z, gluon)$] and the possibilty of CP asymmetries in $D^0$ decays to CP eigenstates such as $K_S π^0$ and others. Finally we demonstrate that with light KK masses, $\sim3$ TeV, the above class of models with anarchic $5D$ Yukawas has a ``CP problem'' since contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment are roughly 20 times larger than the current experimental bound. Using AdS/CFT correspondence, these extra-dimensional models are dual to a purely 4D strongly coupled conformal Higgs sector thus enhancing their appeal.

Three heavy jet events at hadron colliders as a sensitive probe of the Higgs sector

Assuming that a non-standard neutral Higgs with an enhanced Yukawa coupling to a bottom quark is observed at future hadron experiments, we propose a method for a better understanding of the Higgs sector. Our procedure is based on "counting" the number of events with heavy jets (where "heavy" stands for a c or b jet) versus b jets, in the final state of processes in which the Higgs is produced in association with a single high p_T c or b jet. We show that an observed signal of the type proposed, at either the Tevatron or the LHC, will rule out the popular two Higgs doublet model of type II as well as its supersymmetric version - the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), and may provide new evidence in favor of some more exotic multi Higgs scenarios. As an example, we show that in a version of a two Higgs doublet model which naturally accounts for the large mass of the top quark, our signal can be easily detected at the LHC within that framework. We also find that such a signal may be observable at the upgraded Tevatron RunIII, if the neutral Higgs in this model has a mass around 100 GeV and \tanβ> 50 and if the efficiency for distinguishing a c jet from a light jet will reach the level of 50%.

Pathways to a clean gamma (phi3): From B to Super B-factories

The implementation of various methods for the determination of gamma through direct CP violation arising in the interference of b->c and b->u processes in charged as well as neutral B meson decays are considered. We show that the inclusion of D0 resulting from D*0-->D0+pi0(gamma) say via B-->KD*0 makes a significant difference in the attainable accuracy for gamma. Both exclusive and inclusive decays of the B+- and B0 to states containing D0/D0-bar followed by both inclusive and exclusive decays of the D0 are discussed. It is shown that with statistics which might be obtained at B factories (5-10 X 10^8 B-pairs) a 1-sigma determination of gamma to about +-5 degrees may be possible depending on the efficiency of reconstruction, backgrounds and the details of the decay amplitudes involved. The role of data from a charm factory as well as effects of D0 mixing are discussed. Extraction of gamma with accuracy that is roughly commensurate with the intrinsic theory error of these methods (i.e. around 0.1%), which is an important goal, will require >10^{10} B-pairs, namely a Super-B Factory.

Role of Charm Factory in Extracting CKM-Phase Information via B --> DK

In this paper we study the impact of data that can be obtained from a Charm Factory on the determination of the CKM parameter gamma from decays of the form B -> D0 K where the D0 decays to specific inclusive and exclusive final states. In particular, for each exclusive final state $f$, the charm factory can determine the strong phase difference between D0-> f and D0-bar -> f by exploiting correlations in psi(3770)-> D0 D0-bar. This provides crucial input to the determination of gamma via the interference of B+- -> K+- D0 -> f with B+- -> K+- D0-bar -> f. We discuss how the method may be generalized to inclusive final states and illustrate with a toy model how such methods may offer one of the best means to determine gamma with 10^8-10^9 B-mesons.
