Quantum state of interacting primordial inhomogeneities: de-squeezing and decoherence

We investigate how interactions affect the quantum state of scalar perturbations during inflation and the quantum correlations they may exhibit. Focusing on the case of scalar perturbations in single-field inflation, we model interactions using a Lindblad equation with a non-unitary contribution quadratic in the scalar perturbations, and of parametrisable amplitude and time dependence. We compute the quantum state of these interacting perturbations, which is fully described by its purity and squeezing parameters. First, we show that, in most of the parameter space, not only the purity but also the squeezing parameter is significantly reduced by interactions. Second, we show that this de-squeezing induced by the interactions, on top of the purity loss, causes a further suppression of quantum correlations. We thus emphasise that the quantum or classical character of the correlations exhibited by the perturbations cannot be correctly determined by computing the effect of interactions on the purity alone. Since the phenomenological framework adopted in this paper encompasses a wide class of possible interactions, our results provide general insights into the nature of decoherence processes in primordial fluctuations.

Observation of entanglement in a cold atom analog of cosmological preheating

We observe entanglement between collective excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a configuration analogous to particle production during the preheating phase of the early universe. In our setup, the oscillation of the inflaton field is mimicked by the transverse breathing mode of a cigar-shaped condensate, which parametrically excites longitudinal quasiparticles with opposite momenta. After a short modulation period, we observe entanglement of these pairs which reveals the role played by vacuum fluctuations in seeding the parametric growth, confirming the quantum origin of the excitations. As the system continues to evolve, we observe a decrease in correlations and a disappearance of non-classical features. These point towards future experimental probes of the late-time nonlinear regime where further analogies can be drawn with reheating, i.e. the thermalization of the post-inflationary Universe.

Parametric pair production of collective excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate

By exciting the transverse breathing mode of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate, we parametrically produce longitudinal collective excitations in a pairwise manner. This process also referred to as Faraday wave generation, can be seen as an analog to cosmological particle production. Building upon single particle detection, we investigate the early time dynamics of the exponential growth and compare our observations with a Bogoliubov description. The growth rate we observe experimentally is in very good agreement with theoretical predictions, demonstrating the validity of the Bogoliubov description and thereby confirming the smallness of quasiparticle interactions in such an elongated gas. We also discuss the presence of oscillations in the atom number, which are due to pair correlations and to the rate at which interactions are switched off.

Dissipative parametric resonance in a modulated 1D Bose gas

We synthesize results of previous works to give a coherent and self-consistent account of parametric resonance in a modulated quasi-1D Bose gas in the presence of a dissipative mechanism. The resonant behaviour is shown to be largely in line with the predictions of a phenomenological model published in 2014, while the associated dissipation rate is consistent with that derived in 2022 from three-wave mixing processes between the produced phonons and thermal fluctuations.

Entanglement and decoherence in cosmology and in analogue gravity experiments

This thesis is dedicated to analysing the generation and destruction of quantum correlations in the context of inflationary cosmology and an experiment of 'analogue' preheating. Inflation is a phase of accelerated expansion of the Universe, preceding the so-called Standard Model of Big Bang cosmology, introduced to solve some shortcomings of this model. It also provides a mechanism for the emergence of primordial inhomogeneities by amplification of initial quantum fluctuations. Inflation is followed by a 'reheating' period, in which most particles are expected to be generated and reach thermal equilibrium, setting the stage for the standard Big Bang of cosmology. During a 'preheating' period, this creation proceeds partly by parametric excitation of resonant modes of the matter fields initially in their vacuum, a genuine quantum process. The physics of both situations, inflation and preheating, is that of a strong classical field acting on a quantum field to produce entangled (quasi-)particles. When the classical source is the space-time metric itself, as in inflation, we are in the framework of Quantum Field Theory in Curved Space-time (QFTCS). The evolution of the generated quantum correlations is the topic of this PhD.

Comparing quantumness criteria

Measuring the quantumness of a system can be done with a variety of methods. In this article we compare different criteria, namely quantum discord, Bell inequality violation and non-separability, for systems placed in a Gaussian state. When the state is pure, these criteria are equivalent, while we find that they do not necessarily coincide when decoherence takes place. Finally, we prove that these criteria are essentially controlled by the semi-minor axis of the ellipse representing the state's Wigner function in phase space.

Quantum cosmological gravitational waves?

General relativity and its cosmological solution predicts the existence of tensor modes of perturbations evolving on top of our Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker expanding Universe. Being gauge invariant and not necessarily coupled to other quantum sources, they can be seen as representing pure gravity. Unambiguously showing they are indeed to be quantised would thus provide an unquestionable proof of the quantum nature of gravitation. This review will present a summary of the various theoretical issues that could lead to this conclusion.

Phonon decay in 1D atomic Bose quasicondensates via Beliaev-Landau damping

In a 1D Bose gas, there is no non-trivial scattering channel involving three Bogoliubov quasiparticles that conserves both energy and momentum. Nevertheless, we show that such 3-wave mixing processes (Beliaev and Landau damping) account for their decay via interactions with thermal fluctuations. Within an appropriate time window where the Fermi Golden Rule is expected to apply, the occupation number of the initially occupied mode decays exponentially and the rate takes a simple analytic form. The result is shown to compare favorably with simulations based on the Truncated Wigner Approximation. It is also shown that the same processes slow down the exponential growth of phonons induced by a parametric oscillation.

Discord and Decoherence

In quantum information theory, quantum discord has been proposed as a tool to characterise the presence of "quantum correlations" between the subparts of a given system. Whether a system behaves quantum-mechanically or classically is believed to be impacted by the phenomenon of decoherence, which originates from the unavoidable interaction between this system and an environment. Generically, decoherence is associated with a decrease of the state purity, i.e. a transition from a pure to a mixed state. In this paper, we investigate how quantum discord is modified by this quantum-to-classical transition. This study is carried out on systems described by quadratic Hamiltonians and Gaussian states, with generalised squeezing parameters. A generic parametrisation is also introduced to describe the way the system is partitioned into two subsystems. We find that the evolution of quantum discord in presence of an environment is a competition between the growth of the squeezing amplitude and the decrease of the state purity. In phase space, this corresponds to whether the semi-minor axis of the Wigner ellipse increases or decreases, which has a clear geometrical interpretation. Finally, these considerations are applied to primordial cosmological perturbations, thus allowing us to investigate how large-scale structures in our universe, which are believed to arise from quantum fluctuations, can exhibit classical properties.
