Causality Violation in Non-local Quantum Field Theory

We study the causality violation in the non-local phi ^{4}-theory (as formulated by Kleppe and Woodard) containing a finite mass scale Lambda . Starting from the Bogoliubov-Shirkov criterion for causality, we construct and study combinations of S-matrix elements that signal the violation of causality in the one loop approximation. We find that the causality violation in the exclusive process ϕ+ϕ--> ϕ+ϕgrows with energy, but the growth with energy, (for low to moderate energies) is suppressed to all orders compared to what one would expect purely from dimensional considerations. We however find that the causality violation in other processes such as ϕ+ϕ--> ϕ+ϕ+ϕ+ϕgrows with energy as expected from dimensional considerations at low to moderate energies. For high enough energies comparable to the mass scale Lambda, however, we find a rapid (exponential-like) growth in the degree of causality violation. We suggest a scenario, based on an earlier work, that will enable one to evade a large theoretical causality violation at high energies, should it be unobserved experimentally.

Production Mechanism for Quark Gluon Plasma in Heavy Ion Collisions

A general scheme is proposed here to describe the production of semi soft and soft quarks and gluons that form the bulk of the plasma in ultra relativistic heavy ion collisions. We show how to obtain rates as a function of time in a self consistent manner, without any ad-hoc assumption. All the required features - the dynamical nature of QCD vacuum, the non-Markovian nature of the production, and quasi particle nature of the partons, and the importance of quantum interference effects are naturally incorporated. We illustrate the results with a realistic albeit toy model and show how almost all the currently employed source terms are unreliable in their predictions. We show the rates in the momentum space and indicate at the end how to extract the full phase-space dependence.

Neutrino-Induced Giant Air Showers in Large Extra Dimension Models

In models based on large extra dimensions where massive spin 2 exchange can dominate at high energies, the neutrino-proton cross section can rise to typical hadronic values at energies above 10^20 eV. The neutrino then becomes a candidate for the primary that initiates the highest energy cosmic ray showers. We investigate characteristics of neutrino-induced showers compared to proton-induced showers. The comparison includes study of starting depth, profile with depth, lateral particle distribution at ground and muon lateral distribution at ground level. We find that for cross sections above 20 mb there are regions of parameter space where the two types of showers are essentially indistinguishable. We conclude that the neutrino candidate hypothesis cannot be ruled out on the basis of shower characteristics.
