Three-dimensional Coulomb branches have a prominent role in the study of moduli spaces of supersymmetric gauge theories with $8$ supercharges in $3,4,5$, and $6$ dimensions. Inspired by simply laced $3$d $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories, we consider Coulomb branches constructed from non-simply laced quivers with edge multiplicity $k$ and no flavor nodes. In a computation of the Coulomb branch as the space of dressed monopole operators, a center-of-mass $U(1)$ symmetry needs to be ungauged. Typically, for a simply laced theory, all choices of the ungauged $U(1)$ (i.e. all choices of ungauging schemes) are equivalent and the Coulomb branch is unique. In this note, we study various ungauging schemes and their effect on the resulting Coulomb branch variety. It is shown that, for a non-simply laced quiver, inequivalent ungauging schemes exist which correspond to inequivalent Coulomb branch varieties. Ungauging on any of the long nodes of a non-simply laced quiver yields the same Coulomb branch $\mathcal{C}$. For choices of ungauging the $U(1)$ on a short node of rank higher than $1$, the GNO dual magnetic lattice deforms such that it no longer corresponds to a Lie group, and therefore, the monopole formula yields a non-valid Coulomb branch. However, if the ungauging is performed on a short node of rank $1$, the one-dimensional magnetic lattice is rescaled conformally along its single direction and the corresponding Coulomb branch is an orbifold of the form $\mathcal{C}/\mathbb{Z}_k$. Ungauging schemes of $3$d Coulomb branches provide a particularly interesting and intuitive description of a subset of actions on the nilpotent orbits studied by Kostant and Brylinski arXiv:math/9204227. The ungauging scheme analysis is carried out for minimally unbalanced $C_n$, affine $F_4$, affine $G_2$, and twisted affine $D_4^{(3)}$ quivers, respectively.
M5 branes on a D-type ALE singularity display various phenomena that introduce additional massless degrees of freedom. The M5 branes are known to fractionate on a D-type singularity. Whenever two fractional M5 branes coincide, tensionless strings arise. Therefore, these systems do not admit a low-energy Lagrangian description. Focusing on the 6-dimensional N=(1,0) world-volume theories on the M5 branes, the vacuum moduli space has two branches were either the scalar fields in the tensor multiplet or the scalars in the hypermultiplets acquire a non-trivial vacuum expectation value. As suggested in previous work, the Higgs branch may change drastically whenever a BPS-string becomes tensionless. Recently, magnetic quivers have been introduced with the aim to capture all Higgs branches over any point of the tensor branch. In this paper, the formalism is extended to Type IIA brane configurations involving O6 planes. Since the 6d N=(1,0) theories are composed of orthosymplectic gauge groups, the derivation rules for the magnetic quiver in the presence of O6 planes have to be conjectured. This is achieved by analysing the 6d theories for a single M5 brane on a D-type singularity and deriving the magnetic quivers for the finite and infinite gauge coupling Higgs branch from a brane configuration. The validity of the proposed derivation rules is underpinned by deriving the associated Hasse diagram. For multiple M5 branes, the approach of this paper provides magnetic quivers for all Higgs branches over any point of the tensor branch. In particular, an interesting infinite gauge coupling transition is found that is related to the SO(8) non-Higgsable cluster.
It is widely considered that the classical Higgs branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD is a well understood object. However there is no satisfactory understanding of its structure. There are two complications: (1) the Higgs branch chiral ring contains nilpotent elements, as can easily be checked in the case of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ with 1 flavour. (2) the Higgs branch as a geometric space can in general be decomposed into two cones with nontrivial intersection, the baryonic and mesonic branches. To study the second point in detail we use the recently developed tool of magnetic quivers for five-brane webs, using the fact that the classical Higgs branch for theories with 8 supercharges does not change through dimensional reduction. We compare this approach with the computation of the hyper-Kähler quotient using Hilbert series techniques, finding perfect agreement if nilpotent operators are eliminated by the computation of a so called radical. We study the nature of the nilpotent operators and give conjectures for the Hilbert series of the full Higgs branch, giving new insights into the vacuum structure of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD. In addition we demonstrate the power of the magnetic quiver technique, as it allows us to identify the decomposition into cones, and provides us with the global symmetries of the theory, as a simple alternative to the techniques that were used to date.
We explore the geometrical structure of Higgs branches of quantum field theories with 8 supercharges in 3, 4, 5 and 6 dimensions. They are symplectic singularities, and as such admit a decomposition (or foliation) into so-called symplectic leaves, which are related to each other by transverse slices. We identify this foliation with the pattern of partial Higgs mechanism of the theory and, using brane systems and recently introduced notions of magnetic quivers and quiver subtraction, we formalise the rules to obtain the Hasse diagram which encodes the structure of the foliation. While the unbroken gauge symmetry and the number of flat directions are obtainable by classical field theory analysis for Lagrangian theories, our approach allows us to characterise the geometry of the Higgs branch by a Hasse diagram with symplectic leaves and transverse slices, thus refining the analysis and extending it to non-Lagrangian theories. Most of the Hasse diagrams we obtain extend beyond the cases of nilpotent orbit closures known in the mathematics literature. The geometric analysis developed in this paper is applied to Higgs branches of several Lagrangian gauge theories, Argyres-Douglas theories, five dimensional SQCD theories at the conformal fixed point, and six dimensional SCFTs.
We build on previous studies of the Higgs and Coulomb branches of SUSY quiver theories having 8 supercharges, including $3d~{\cal N}=4$, and Classical gauge groups. The vacuum moduli spaces of many such theories can be parameterised by pairs of nilpotent orbits of Classical Lie algebras; they are transverse to one orbit and intersect the closure of the second. We refer to these transverse spaces as Slodowy intersections. They embrace reduced single instanton moduli spaces, nilpotent orbits, Kraft-Procesi transitions and Slodowy slices, as well as other types. We show how quiver subtractions, between multi-flavoured unitary or ortho-symplectic quivers, can be used to find a complete set of Higgs branch constructions for the Slodowy intersections of any Classical group. We discuss the relationships between the Higgs and Coulomb branches of these quivers and $T_σ^ρ$ theories in the context of $3d$ mirror symmetry, including problematic aspects of Coulomb branch constructions from ortho-symplectic quivers. We review Coulomb and Higgs branch constructions for a subset of Slodowy intersections from multi-flavoured Dynkin diagram quivers. We tabulate Hilbert series and Highest Weight Generating functions for Slodowy intersections of Classical algebras up to rank 4. The results are confirmed by direct calculation of Hilbert series from a localisation formula for normal Slodowy intersections that is related to the Hall Littlewood polynomials.
The physics of M5 branes placed near an M9 plane on an A-type ALE singularity exhibits a variety of phenomena that introduce additional massless degrees of freedom. There are tensionless strings whenever two M5 branes coincide or whenever an M5 brane approaches the M9 plane. These systems do not admit a low-energy Lagrangian description so new techniques are desirable to shed light on the physics of these phenomena. The 6-dimensional N=(1,0) world-volume theory on the M5 branes is composed of massless vector, tensor, and hyper multiplets, and has two branches of the vacuum moduli space where either the scalar fields in the tensor or hyper multiplets receive vacuum expectation values. Focusing on the Higgs branch of the low-energy theory, previous works suggest the conjecture that a new Higgs branch arises whenever a BPS-string becomes tensionless. Consequently, a single theory admits a multitude of Higgs branches depending on the types of tensionless strings in the spectrum. The two main phenomena discrete gauging and small E8 instanton transition can be treated in a concise and effective manner by means of Coulomb branches of 3-dimensional N=4 gauge theories. In this paper, a formalism is introduced that allows to derive a novel object from a brane configuration, called the magnetic quiver. The main features are as follows: (i) the 3d Coulomb branch of the magnetic quiver yields the Higgs branch of the 6d system, (ii) all discrete gauging and E8 instanton transitions have an explicit brane realisation, and (iii) exceptional symmetries arise directly from brane configurations. The formalism facilitates the description of Higgs branches at finite and infinite gauge coupling as spaces of dressed monopole operators.
We develop a new method for constructing $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ Coulomb branch chiral rings in terms of gauge-invariant generators and relations while making the global symmetry manifest. Our examples generalise to all balanced quivers of type $A$ and $D$ whose Coulomb branches are closures of nilpotent orbits. This new approach is a synthesis of operator counting using Hilbert series and explicit algebraic construction introduced by Bullimore, Dimofte and Gaiotto with significant potential for further generalisation to other quivers, including non-simply laced. The method also identifies complex mass deformations of many Coulomb branches, providing an explicit construction for complex deformations of nilpotent orbits.
We utilise SUSY quiver gauge theories to compute properties of Slodowy slices; these are spaces transverse to the nilpotent orbits of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. We analyse classes of quiver theories, with Classical gauge and flavour groups, whose Higgs branch Hilbert series are the intersections between Slodowy slices and the nilpotent cone $\mathcal S\cap \mathcal N$ of $\mathfrak{g}$. We calculate refined Hilbert series for Classical algebras up to rank $4$ (and $A_5$), and find descriptions of their representation matrix generators as algebraic varieties encoding the relations of the chiral ring. We also analyse a class of dual quiver theories, whose Coulomb branches are intersections $\mathcal S\cap \mathcal N$; such dual quiver theories exist for the Slodowy slices of $A$ algebras, but are limited to a subset of the Slodowy slices of $BCD$ algebras. The analysis opens new questions about the extent of $3d$ mirror symmetry within the class of SCFTs known as $T_σ^ρ(G)$ theories. We also give simple group theoretic formulae for the Hilbert series of Slodowy slices; these draw directly on the $SU(2)$ embedding into $G$ of the associated nilpotent orbit, and the Hilbert series of the nilpotent cone.
Two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories are realized as D3-brane box configurations (two dimensional intervals) which are bounded by NS5-branes and intersect with D5-branes. The periodic brane configuration is mapped to D1-D5-D5$'$ brane system at orbifold singularity via T-duality. The matter content and interactions are encoded by the $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ quiver diagrams which are determined by the brane configurations. The Abelian gauge anomaly cancellation indicates the presence of Fermi multiplets at the NS-NS$'$ junction. We also discuss the brane construction of $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetric boundary conditions in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories involving two-dimensional boundary degrees of freedom that cancel gauge anomaly.
We develop a classification of \emph{minimally unbalanced} $3d~\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories. These gauge theories are important because the isometry group $G$ of their Coulomb branch contains a single factor, which is either a classical or an exceptional Lie group. Concurrently, this provides a classification of hyperkähler cones with isometry group $G$ which are obtainable by Coulomb branch constructions. HyperKähler cones such as Coulomb branches of $3d~\mathcal{N}=4$ quivers are indispensable tools for describing Higgs branches of different theories in various dimensions. In particular, they are used to describe Higgs branches of $5d~\mathcal{N}=1$ SQCD with gauge group $SU(N_c)$ and $6d~\mathcal N = (1,0)$ SQCD with gauge group $Sp(N_c)$ at the respective UV fixed points.
Superconformal five dimensional theories have a rich structure of phases and brane webs play a crucial role in studying their properties. This paper is devoted to the study of a three parameter family of SQCD theories, given by the number of colors $N_c$ for an $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory, number of fundamental flavors $N_f$, and the Chern Simons level $k$. The study of their infinite coupling Higgs branch is a long standing problem and reveals a rich pattern of moduli spaces, depending on the 3 values in a critical way. For a generic choice of the parameters we find a surprising number of 3 different components, with intersections that are closures of height 2 nilpotent orbits of the flavor symmetry. This is in contrast to previous studies where except for one case ($N_c=2, N_f=2$), the parameters were restricted to the cases of Higgs branches that have only one component. The new feature is achieved thanks to a concept in tropical geometry which is called stable intersection and allows for a computation of the Higgs branch to almost all the cases which were previously unknown for this three parameter family apart form certain small number of exceptional theories with low rank gauge group. A crucial feature in the construction of the Higgs branch is the notion of dressed monopole operators.
We analyze the moduli spaces near N=4 supersymmetric AdS4 vacua of string theory by combining and comparing various approaches: (a) the known exact solutions of Type IIB string theory with localized 5-brane sourcees, (b) the holographically dual 3d quiver gauge theories; (c) gauged supergravity, and (d) the representations of the superconformal algebra Osp(4|4). Short multiplets containing the marginal N=2 deformations transform in the (2;0), (0;2) or (1;1) representations of the R-symmetry group SU(2)_H x SU(2)_C. The first two are classified by the chiral rings of the Higgs and Coulomb branches, while the latter contain mixed-branch operators. We identify the origin of these moduli in string theory, matching in particular the operators of the chiral rings with open strings on the magnetized 5-brane sources. Our results provide new evidence for the underlying holographic duality. The existence of a large number of bound-state moduli highlights the limitations of effective supergravity.
The Coulomb branches of certain 3-dimensional N=4 quiver gauge theories are closures of nilpotent orbits of classical or exceptional algebras. The monopole formula, as Hilbert series of the associated Coulomb branch chiral ring, has been successful in describing the singular hyper-Kähler structure. By means of the monopole formula with background charges for flavour symmetries, which realises real mass deformations, we study the resolution properties of all (characteristic) height two nilpotent orbits. As a result, the monopole formula correctly reproduces (i) the existence of a symplectic resolution, (ii) the form of the symplectic resolution, and (iii) the Mukai flops in the case of multiple resolutions. Moreover, the (characteristic) height two nilpotent orbit closures are resolved by cotangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces and the unitary Coulomb branch quiver realisations exhaust all the possibilities.
The study of Coulomb branches of 3-dimensional N=4 gauge theories via the associated Hilbert series, the so-called monopole formula, has been proven useful not only for 3-dimensional theories, but also for Higgs branches of 5 and 6-dimensional gauge theories with 8 supercharges. Recently, a conjecture connected different phases of 6-dimensional Higgs branches via gauging of a discrete global $S_n$ symmetry. On the corresponding 3-dimensional Coulomb branch, this amounts to a geometric $S_n$-quotient. In this note, we prove the conjecture on Coulomb branches with unitary nodes and, moreover, extend it to Coulomb branches with other classical groups. The results promote discrete $S_n$-quotients to a versatile tool in the study of Coulomb branches.
This paper tests a conjecture on discrete non-Abelian gauging of 3d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Given a parent quiver with a bouquet of $n$ nodes of rank $1$, invariant under a discrete $S_n$ global symmetry, one can construct a daughter quiver where the bouquet is substituted by a single adjoint $n$ node. Based on the main conjecture in this paper, the daughter quiver corresponds to a theory where the $S_n$ discrete global symmetry is gauged and the new Coulomb branch is a non-Abelian orbifold of the parent Coulomb branch. We demonstrate and test the conjecture for three simply laced families of bouquet quivers and a non-simply laced bouquet quiver with $C_2$ factor in the global symmetry.
One of the simplest $(1,0)$ supersymmetric theories in six dimensions lives on the world volume of one M5 brane at a $D$ type singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/D_k$. The low energy theory is given by an SQCD theory with $Sp(k-4)$ gauge group, a precise number of $2k$ flavors which is anomaly free, and a scale which is set by the inverse gauge coupling. The Higgs branch at finite coupling $\mathcal{H}_f$ is a closure of a nilpotent orbit of $D_{2k}$ and develops many more flat directions as the inverse gauge coupling is set to zero (violating a standard lore that wrongly claims the Higgs branch remains classical). The quaternionic dimension grows by $29$ for any $k$ and the Higgs branch stops being a closure of a nilpotent orbit for $k>4$, with an exception of $k=4$ where it becomes $\overline{{\rm min}_{E_8}}$, the closure of the minimal nilpotent orbit of $E_8$, thus having a rare phenomenon of flavor symmetry enhancement in six dimensions. Geometrically, the natural inclusion of $\mathcal{H}_f \subset \mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ fits into the Brieskorn Slodowy theory of transverse slices, and the transverse slice is computed to be $\overline{{\rm min}_{E_8}}$ for any $k>3$. This is identified with the well known small $E_8$ instanton transition where 1 tensor multiplet is traded with 29 hypermultiplets, thus giving a physical interpretation to the geometric theory. By the analogy with the classical case, we call this the Kraft Procesi transition.
Compactifying N=(1,0) theories on a torus, with additional fluxes for global symmetries, we obtain N=1 supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. It is shown that for many choices of flux these models are toric quiver gauge theories with singlet fields. In particular we compare the anomalies deduced from the description of the six-dimensional theory and the anomalies of the quiver gauge theories. We also give predictions for anomalies of four-dimensional theories corresponding to general compactifications of M5-branes probing C_2/Z_k singularities.
