Counting curves on surfaces in Calabi-Yau 3-folds

Motivated by S-duality modularity conjectures in string theory, we define new invariants counting a restricted class of 2-dimensional torsion sheaves, enumerating pairs $Z\subset H$ in a Calabi-Yau threefold X. Here H is a member of a sufficiently positive linear system and Z is a 1-dimensional subscheme of it. The associated sheaf is the ideal sheaf of $Z\subset H$, pushed forward to X and considered as a certain Joyce-Song pair in the derived category of X. We express these invariants in terms of the MNOP invariants of X.

Cremona symmetry in Gromov-Witten theory

We establish the existence of a symmetry within the Gromov-Witten theory of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and its blowup along points. The nature of this symmetry is encoded in the Cremona transform and its resolution, which lives on the toric variety of the permutohedron. This symmetry expresses some difficult to compute invariants in terms of others less difficult to compute. We focus on enumerative implications; in particular this technique yields a one line proof of the uniqueness of the rational normal curve. Our method involves a study of the toric geometry of the permutohedron, and degeneration of Gromov-Witten invariants.

Invariants of pure 2-dimensional sheaves inside threefolds and modular forms

Motivated by S-duality modularity conjectures in string theory, we study the Donaldson-Thomas type invariants of pure 2-dimensional sheaves inside a nonsingular threefold X in three different situations: (1). X is a K3 fibration over a curve. We study the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the 2 dimensional Gieseker stable sheaves in X supported on the fibers. Analogous to the Gromov-Witten theory formula established in the work of Maulik-Pandharipande, we express these invariants in terms of the Euler characteristic of the Hilbert scheme of points on the K3 surface and the Noether-Lefschetz numbers of the fibration, and prove that the invariants have modular properties. (2). X is the total space of the canonical bundle of P^2. We study the generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants defined by Joyce-Song of the moduli spaces of the 2-dimensional Gieseker semistable sheaves on X with first Chern class equal to k times the class of the zero section of X. When k=1,2 or 3, and semistability implies stability, we express the invariants in terms of known modular forms. We prove a combinatorial formula for the invariants when k=2 in the presence of the strictly semistable sheaves, and verify the BPS integrality conjecture of Joyce-Song in some cases. (3). (Joint with Richard Thomas) X is a Calabi-Yau threefold and L is a sufficiently positive line bundle. We define new invariants counting a restricted class of 2-dimensional torsion sheaves, enumerating pairs (Z,H) in X where H is a member of the linear system |L| and Z is a 1-dimensional subscheme of H. The associated sheaf is the ideal sheaf of Z in H, pushed forward to X and considered as a certain Joyce-Song pair in the derived category of X. We express these invariants in terms of the MNOP invariants of X.

Counting invariants for the ADE McKay quivers

We consider the moduli space of the McKay quiver representations associated to the binary polyhedral groups G < SU(2) < SU(3). The derived category of such representations is equivalent to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the corresponding ADE resolution Y=G-Hilb(C^3). Following the ideas of Nagao and Nakajima, by making particular choices of parameters in the space of stability conditions on the equivalent derived categories above, we recover Donaldson-Thomas (DT), Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) and Szendroi (NCDT) moduli spaces. We also compute the Gromov-Witten (GW) partition function of Y directly and express the result in terms of the root system of the associated ADE Dynkin diagram. We then verify the conjectural GW/DT/NCDT-correspondence by assuming the DT/PT-correspondence. The Szendroi invariants are the same as the orbifold Donaldson-Thomas invariants for C^3/G defined by Bryan. This will allow us to verify the Crepant Resolution Conjecture for the orbifold Donaldson-Thomas theory in this case.

Connected Gromov-Witten invariants of [Sym^n(A_r)]

We explore the theory of connected Gromov-Witten invariants of the symmetric product stack [Sym^n(A_r)]. We derive closed-form expressions for all equivariant invariants with two insertions and reveal a natural correspondence between the theory and the relative Gromov-Witten theory of the threefold A_r x P^1. When n is less than or equal to 3, we determine 3-point (usual) Gromov-Witten invariants of [Sym^n(A_1)].

The Quantum McKay Correspondence for polyhedral singularities

Let G be a polyhedral group, namely a finite subgroup of SO(3). Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme provides a preferred Calabi-Yau resolution Y of the polyhedral singularity C^3/G. The classical McKay correspondence describes the classical geometry of Y in terms of the representation theory of G. In this paper we describe the quantum geometry of Y in terms of R, an ADE root system associated to G. Namely, we give an explicit formula for the Gromov-Witten partition function of Y as a product over the positive roots of R. In terms of counts of BPS states (Gopakumar-Vafa invariants), our result can be stated as a correspondence: each positive root of R corresponds to one half of a genus zero BPS state. As an application, we use the crepant resolution conjecture to provide a full prediction for the orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of [C^3/G].

BPS invariants for resolutions of polyhedral singularities

We study the BPS invariants of the preferred Calabi-Yau resolution of ADE polyhedral singularities C^3/G given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert schemes. Genus 0 BPS invariants are defined by means of the moduli space of torsion sheaves as proposed by Sheldon Katz. We show that these invariants are equal to half the number of certain positive roots of an ADE root system associated to G. This is in agreement with the prediction via Gromov-Witten theory.

Hurwitz-Hodge Integrals, the E6 and D4 root systems, and the Crepant Resolution Conjecture

Let G be the group A_4 or Z_2xZ_2. We compute the integral of λ_g on the Hurwitz locus H_G\subset M_g of curves admitting a degree 4 cover of P^1 having monodromy group G. We compute the generating functions for these integrals and write them as a trigonometric expression summed over the positive roots of the E_6 and D_4 root systems respectively. As an application, we prove the Crepant Resolution Conjecture for the orbifolds [C^3/A_4] and [C^3/(Z_2xZ_2)].

Root Systems and the Quantum Cohomology of ADE resolutions

We compute the C*-equivariant quantum cohomology ring of Y, the minimal resolution of the DuVal singularity C^2/G where G is a finite subgroup of SU(2). The quantum product is expressed in terms of an ADE root system canonically associated to G. We generalize the resulting Frobenius manifold to non-simply laced root systems to obtain an n parameter family of algebra structures on the affine root lattice of any root system. Using the Crepant Resolution Conjecture, we obtain a prediction for the orbifold Gromov-Witten potential of [C^2/G].

On the equivariant Gromov-Witten Theory of P^2-bundles over curves

We compute section class relative equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of the total space of P^2-bundles of the form P(O+L1+L2)-->C where C is a genus g curve, O is the trivial bundle, and L1 (resp. L2) is an arbitrary line bundle of degree k1 (resp. k2) over C. We prove a gluing formula for the partition functions of these invariants. Using this gluing formula together with localization techniques, we construct three explicit 3x3 matrices G, U1 and U2 with entries in Q((u))(t0,t1,t2), where u is the genus parameter, and t0,t1,t2 are the equivariant parameters. Then we prove that the partition function of the section class, ordinary equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of X is given by trace(G^(g-1).U1^k1.U2^k2). As an application, we establish a formula for the partition function of the ordinary Gromov-Witten invariants of any P^2-bundle X over a curve of genus g for any class which is a Calabi-Yau section class. We prove that this partition function is given by 3^g(2sin u/2)^(2g-2).
