RG-Flow Renormalized One-Loop Corrections to the Power Spectrum in USR Inflation

The nature of one-loop corrections to long-wavelength CMB-scale modes in single-field inflation models with an intermediate ultra-slow-roll (USR) phase remains a subject of active debate. In this work, we perform a detailed investigation into the regularization and renormalization of these one-loop corrections to the curvature perturbation power spectrum. Employing a combined UV-IR regularization scheme within the renormalization group (RG) flow formalism, we compute the renormalized one-loop contributions, including those from the tadpole diagram, arising from both the cubic and quartic interaction Hamiltonians. This allows us to study meaningfully the running of the coupling constant aiming at removing the divergences appear in our study. We demonstrate that the fully regularized and renormalized fractional loop correction to the power spectrum is controlled by its peak value at the end of the USR phase, scaling as $\mathcal{P}_\mathrm{peak} \sim e^{6 ΔN}$, where $ΔN$ is the duration of the USR phase. This result confirms the original conclusion that loop corrections can become non-perturbatively large if the transition from the USR phase to the final slow-roll phase is instantaneous and sharp, potentially challenging the perturbative framework of such inflationary scenarios for primordial black hole formation.

Stochastic Inflation with Interacting Noises

Stochastic $δN$ formalism is a powerful tool to calculate the cosmological correlators non-perturbatively. However, it requires the initial data for the amplitude of the noise on the initial flat hypersurface which for a free theory during inflation is fixed to be $\frac{H}{2 π}$. In this work, we study the setups where the underlying theory involves interactions and the stochastic noises inherit these interactions. We extend the stochastic $δN$ formalism to these setups and rewrite the corresponding Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations in which the QFT corrections in the amplitude of the noises are taken into account. As an example, in the three-phase SR-USR-SR setup which is employed for PBHs formation, the modification in the amplitude of noise is calculated from the one-loop corrections in power spectrum via in-in formalism. We show that in these setups the amplitude of the stochastic noise is modified to $\frac{H}{2 π} \Big(1+ \frac{ Δ{\cal P}_{\cal R} }{ {\cal P}^{(0)}_{ {\cal R} } }\Big)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ in which $ \frac{Δ{\cal P}_{\cal R} }{ {\cal P}^{(0)}_{{\cal R} } }$ is the fractional one-loop correction in power spectrum.

Trispectrum in Extended USR Model with Transition to SR

We study the trispectrum in a two-phase USR-SR setup of inflation in which the USR stage is extended in the initial phase of inflation while the second stage of inflation proceeds via a slow-roll phase. A key role is played by the sharpness parameter which controls how quickly the system reaches the final attractor phase after the USR stage. We employ both $δN$ and in-in formalisms and calculate trispectrum and the corresponding dimensionless parameters $g_{NL}$ and $τ_{NL}$. We show that both approaches yield the same results and study the shapes of trispectrum in various configurations. It is shown that the maximum value of trispectrum occurs in the setup with an infinitely sharp transition to the attractor phase while much of trispectrum is washed out in the opposite limit of a mild transition.

Small noise expansion of stochastic inflation

By introducing the small noise expansion techniques, we show that the fully nonlinear (non-Markovian) stochastic inflationary system, may be re-cast in terms of an infinite set of Wiener processes (stochastic equations with white noises). As a byproduct, we show that the Starobinsky test field approximation might only provide information about the linear regime of cosmological perturbations and scalar-feld non-Gaussianities might only appear at leading order in slow-roll parameters.

Induced Gravitational Waves from Non-attractor Inflation and NANOGrav data

In this paper, we investigate the scalar-induced gravitational waves in single-field non-attractor inflation for the Pulsar Timing Arrays data. Our model comprises three phases of inflation: the first and third phases are slow-roll inflation, while the second phase is a period of non-attractor inflation. We analyze the model's predictions for various values of the sound speed $c_s$ and examine the sharp transitions to the final attractor phase. Furthermore, we study the model's predictions for NANOGrav observations and future gravitational wave observations. We also calculate the non-Gaussianity parameter $f_{NL}$ for the non-attractor setup with a general sound speed and the sharpness parameter.

Stochastic Multiple Fields Inflation: Diffusion Dominated Regime

We study multiple fields inflation in diffusion dominated regime using stochastic $δN$ formalism. The fields are under pure Brownian motion in a dS background with boundaries in higher dimensional field space. This setup can be realized towards the final stages of the ultra slow-roll setup where the classical drifts fall off exponentially and the perturbations are driven by quantum kicks. We consider both symmetric and asymmetric boundaries with absorbing and reflective boundary conditions and calculate the average number of e-folds, the first crossing probabilities and the power spectrum. We study the primordial black holes (PBHs) formation in this setup and calculate the mass fraction and the contribution of PBHs in dark matter energy density for various higher dimensional field spaces.

Inflation with Stochastic Boundary

We study the Brownian motion of a field where there are boundaries in the inflationary field space. Both the field and the boundary undergo Brownian motions with the amplitudes of the noises determined by the Hubble expansion rate of the corresponding dS spacetime. This setup mimics models of inflation in which curvature perturbation is induced from inhomogeneities generated at the surface of end of inflation. The cases of the drift dominated regime as well as the diffusion dominated regime are studied in details. We calculate the first hitting probabilities as well as the mean number of e-folds for the field to hit either of the boundaries in the field space. The implications for models of inflation are reviewed.

Stochastic Effects in Axion Inflation and Primordial Black Holes Formation

We revisit the model of axion inflation in the context of stochastic inflation and investigate the effects of the stochastic noises associated to the electromagnetic fields. Because of the parity violating interaction, one polarization of the gauge field is amplified inducing large curvature perturbation power spectrum. Taking into account the stochastic kicks arising from the short modes at the time of horizon crossing we obtain the corresponding Langevin equations for the long modes of the electromagnetic and axion fields. It is shown that a mean-reverting process governs the dynamics of the electromagnetic fields such that the tachyonic growth of the gauge fields is balanced by the diffusion forces. As the instability parameter grows towards the end of inflation, the large curvature perturbations induced from gauge field perturbations lead to copious production of small mass primordial black holes (PBHs). It is shown that the produced PBHs follow a Gaussian statistics. Imposing the observational constraints on PBHs formation relaxes the previous bounds on the instability parameter by about fifty percents.

Primordial Helical Magnetic Fields from Inflation?

We revisit the mechanism of helical magnetogenesis during inflation with a parity violating interaction using the formalism of stochastic inflation. One of the polarization of the gauge field undergoes tachyonic growth leading to the generation of helical magnetic fields. We obtain the Langevin equations associated with the electromagnetic fields which are in the form of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic differential equations. Consequently, the tachyonic growth of the helical magnetic fields is balanced by a mean-reverting process of stochastic dynamics such that the magnetic fields settle down to an equilibrium state with the amplitude smaller than what is obtained in the absence of the stochastic noises. Working in the parameter space of the model where both the backreaction and the strong coupling problems are under control the model does not provide large enough seed to be amplified by the galactic dynamo as the source of the magnetic fields observed on cosmological scales.

Stochastic non-attractor inflation

We extend the formalism of stochastic inflation to the setup of non-attractor inflation with a sound speed $c_s$. We obtain the Langevin equations for the superhorizon perturbations and calculate the stochastic corrections to curvature perturbation power spectrum. It is shown that the fractional stochastic corrections in mean number of e-folds and power spectrum are at the order of power spectrum. We also calculate the boundary crossing and the first hitting probabilities in a hypothetical dS space with two boundaries in field space. Furthermore, the stochastic corrections in power spectrum in a setup akin to eternal inflation with large diffusion term are calculated.

Revisiting Magnetogenesis during Inflation

We revisit the mechanism of primordial magnetogenesis during inflation by taking into account the dynamics of the stochastic noises of the electromagnetic perturbations. We obtain the associated Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations for the electromagnetic fields and solve them analytically. It is shown that while the backreactions of the electric field energy density may spoil inflation too early, but there are regions of parameter space where the usual decaying behavior of the magnetic fields are replaced by a mean-reverting process of stochastic dynamics. As a result, the magnetic fields settle down into an equilibrium state with the amplitude significantly larger than what is obtained in the absence of the stochastic noises. We show that magnetic fields with present time amplitude $\sim 10^{-13}$ Gauss and coherent length ${\rm Mpc}$ can be generated while the backreactions of the electric field perturbations are under control.

Stochastic Effects in Anisotropic Inflation

We revisit the stochastic effects in the model of anisotropic inflation containing a $U(1)$ gauge field. We obtain the Langevin equations for the inflaton and gauge fields perturbations and solve them analytically. We show that if the initial value of the electric field is larger than its classical attractor value, then the random stochastic forces associated with the gauge field is balanced by the frictional damping (classical) force and the electric field falls into an equilibrium (stationary) regime. As a result, the classical attractor value of the electric field is replaced by its stationary value. We show that the probability of generating quadrupolar statistical anisotropy consistent with CMB constraints can be significant.

Stochastic Ultra Slow Roll Inflation

We study the ultra slow roll model in the context of stochastic inflation. Using stochastic $δN$ formalism, we calculate the mean number of $e$-folds, the power spectrum, the bispectrum and the stochastic corrections into these observables. We reproduce correctly the known leading classical contributions to these cosmological observables while we show that the fractional corrections to cosmological observables induced from stochastic dynamics are at the order of power spectrum. In addition, we consider a hypothetical setup containing two absorbing barriers on both sides of the field configuration and calculate the probability of first boundary crossing associated with the classical motion and quantum jumps. This analysis includes the limit of Brownian motion of the quantum fluctuations of a test scalar field in a dS spacetime.
