Phase Noise Detection via Expectation Propagation and Related Algorithms

In the context of signal detection in the presence of an unknown time-varying channel parameter, receivers based on the Expectation Propagation (EP) framework appear to be very promising. EP is a message-passing algorithm based on factor graphs with an inherent ability to combine prior knowledge of system variables with channel observations. This suggests that an effective estimation of random channel parameters can be achieved even with a very limited number of pilot symbols, thus increasing the payload efficiency. However, achieving satisfactory performance often requires ad-hoc adjustments in the way the probability distributions of latent variables - both data and channel parameters - are combined and projected. Here, we apply EP to a classical problem of coded transmission on a strong Wiener phase noise channel, employing soft-input soft-output decoding. We identify its limitations and propose new strategies which reach the performance benchmark while maintaining low complexity, with a primary focus on challenging scenarios where the state-of-the-art algorithms fail.

Discrete-time models and performance of phase noise channels

This paper deals with the phase noise affecting communication systems, where local oscillators are employed to obtain reference signals for carrier and timing synchronizations. The most common discrete-time phase noise channel model is analyzed, with the aim to fill the gap between measurements and analytical models. In particular, the power loss and the intersymbol interference due to the presence of phase noise is evaluated with reference to the measurements parameters and to the system bandwidth. Moreover, the impact on the communication systems' performance of the phase noise originating from the oscillator non idealities is considered, in case of free-running and phase-locked oscillators. The proposed analysis allows to extrapolate useful information about the performance of practical systems by investigating the power spectral density of the oscillator phase noise. An expression for the variance of the residual phase error after tracking, which depends on the main parameters of practical oscillators, is derived, and used to study the dependence of the performance on the symbol rate.

Detection for Flat-Fading Channels based on Expectation Propagation

This paper aims at tackling the problem of signal detection in flat-fading channels. In this context, receivers based on the expectation propagation framework appear to be very promising although presenting some critical issues. We develop a new algorithm based on this framework where, unlike previous works, convergence is achieved after a single forward-backward pass, without additional inner detector iterations. The proposed message scheduling, together with novel adjustments of the approximating distributions' parameters, allows to obtain significant performance advantages with respect to the state-of-the-art solution. Simulation results show the applicability of this algorithm when sparser pilot configurations have to be adopted and a considerable gain compared to the current available strategies.

MDS-Coded Distributed Caching for Low Delay Wireless Content Delivery

We investigate the use of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes to cache popular content to reduce the download delay of wireless content delivery. In particular, we consider a cellular system where devices roam in an out of a cell according to a Poisson random process. Popular content is cached in a limited number of the mobile devices using an MDS code and can be downloaded from the mobile devices using device-to-device communication. We derive an analytical expression for the delay incurred in downloading content from the wireless network and show that distributed caching using MDS codes can dramatically reduce the download delay with respect to the scenario where content is always downloaded from the base station and to the case of uncoded distributed caching.

Multiuser Detection in Multibeam Satellite Systems: Theoretical Analysis and Practical Schemes

We consider the rates achievable by a user in a multibeam satellite system for unicast applications, and propose alternatives to the conventional single-user symbol-by-symbol detection applied at user terminals. Single-user detection is known to suffer from strong degradation when the terminal is located near the edge of the coverage area of a beam, and when aggressive frequency reuse is adopted. For this reason, we consider multiuser detection, and take into account the strongest interfering signal. We also analyze two additional transmission strategies requiring modifications at medium access control layer. We describe an information-theoretic framework to compare the different strategies by computing the information rate of the user in the reference beam. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of coded schemes that could approach the information-theoretic limits. We show that classical codes from the DVB-S2(X) standard are not suitable when multiuser detection is adopted, and we propose two ways to improve the performance, based on the redesign of the code and of the bit mapping.

MDS-Coded Distributed Storage for Low Delay Wireless Content Delivery

We address the use of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes for distributed storage (DS) to enable efficient content delivery in wireless networks. Content is stored in a number of the mobile devices and can be retrieved from them using device-to-device communication or, alternatively, from the base station (BS). We derive an analytical expression for the download delay in the hypothesis that the reliability state of the network is periodically restored. Our analysis shows that MDS-coded DS can dramatically reduce the download time with respect to the reference scenario where content is always downloaded from the BS.

Binary CPMs with Improved Spectral Efficiency

We design new continuous phase modulation (CPM) formats which are based on the combination of a proper precoder with binary input and a ternary CPM. The proposed precoder constrains the signal phase evolution in order to increase the minimum Euclidean distance, and to limit the bandwidth expansion due to the use of a ternary CPM. The resulting schemes are highly spectrally efficient and outperform classical binary and quaternary formats in terms of coded and uncoded performance.

On the Use of Multiple Satellites to Improve the Spectral Efficiency of Broadcast Transmissions

We consider the use of multiple co-located satellites to improve the spectral efficiency of broadcast transmissions. In particular, we assume that two satellites transmit on overlapping geographical coverage areas, with overlapping frequencies. We first describe the theoretical framework based on network information theory and, in particular, on the theory for multiple access channels. The application to different scenarios will be then considered, including the bandlimited additive white Gaussian noise channel with average power constraint and different models for the nonlinear satellite channel. The comparison with the adoption of frequency division multiplexing and with the Alamouti space-time block coding is also provided. The main conclusion is that a strategy based on overlapped signals is the most convenient in the case of no power unbalance, although it requires the adoption of a multiuser detection strategy at the receiver.

On the Application of Multiuser Detection in Multibeam Satellite Systems

We study the achievable rates by a single user in multibeam satellite scenarios. We show alternatives to the conventional symbol-by-symbol detection applied at user terminals. Single user detection is known to suffer from strong degradation when the terminal is located near the edge of the coverage area, and when aggressive frequency reuse is adopted. For this reason, we consider multiuser detection, and take into account the strongest interfering signal. Moreover, we analyze a different transmission strategy, where the signals from two adjacent beams jointly serve two users in a time division multiplexing fashion. We describe an information-theoretic framework to compare different transmission/detection strategies by computing the information rate of the user in the reference beam.

Proving Threshold Saturation for Nonbinary SC-LDPC Codes on the Binary Erasure Channel

We analyze nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group for transmission over the binary erasure channel. We prove threshold saturation of the belief propagation decoding to the potential threshold, by generalizing the proof technique based on potential functions recently introduced by Yedla et al.. The existence of the potential function is also discussed for a vector sparse system in the general case, and some existence conditions are developed. We finally give density evolution and simulation results for several nonbinary SC-LDPC code ensembles.

Improving the Spectral Efficiency of Nonlinear Satellite Systems through Time-Frequency Packing and Advanced Processing

We consider realistic satellite communications systems for broadband and broadcasting applications, based on frequency-division-multiplexed linear modulations, where spectral efficiency is one of the main figures of merit. For these systems, we investigate their ultimate performance limits by using a framework to compute the spectral efficiency when suboptimal receivers are adopted and evaluating the performance improvements that can be obtained through the adoption of the time-frequency packing technique. Our analysis reveals that introducing controlled interference can significantly increase the efficiency of these systems. Moreover, if a receiver which is able to account for the interference and the nonlinear impairments is adopted, rather than a classical predistorter at the transmitter coupled with a simpler receiver, the benefits in terms of spectral efficiency can be even larger. Finally, we consider practical coded schemes and show the potential advantages of the optimized signaling formats when combined with iterative detection/decoding.

Nonbinary Spatially-Coupled LDPC Codes on the Binary Erasure Channel

We analyze the asymptotic performance of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group, when the transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We propose an efficient method to derive an upper bound to the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) threshold for nonbinary LDPC codes, and observe that the MAP performance of regular LDPC codes improves with the alphabet size. We then consider nonbinary SC-LDPC codes. We show that the same threshold saturation effect experienced by binary SC-LDPC codes occurs for the nonbinary codes, hence we conjecture that the BP threshold for large termination length approaches the MAP threshold of the underlying regular ensemble.
