Ergodic $\times p$-invariant measures on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with no dimension dropping projections

Fix an integer $p\geq 2$ and $0<s<1$. We construct an ergodic $\times p$-invariant measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb T^2$ of dimension $s$, such that every line projection preserves dimension, including when the corresponding projected IFS has exact overlaps. In fact, our measure assigns mass $O(w^s)$ to every planar tube of width $w$. The result is sharp at the endpoint $s=1$ as shown by Py\"or\"al\"a, Shmerkin, Suomala and Wu (2025). In contrast, we show that every quasi-Bernoulli $T_p$-invariant measure with positive dimension admits a dimension-dropping projection.

Fourier decay and non-decay for pseudo-affine self-conformal measures

We study the sharpness of recent sufficient conditions for polynomial Fourier decay of self conformal measures on the line. First, we construct a $C^\infty$ iterated function system which is not $C^1$-conjugate to self-similar, but which nevertheless admits a stationary measure that is not Rajchman. Second, for every strongly separated Bernoulli convolution $\mu$ and every $1\leq r<\infty$, we construct a $C^r$-diffeomorphism $h$ such that $h'$ is constant on $\operatorname{supp}\mu$, yet the image measure $h\mu$ has polynomial Fourier decay. All constructions are within the framework of pseudo-affine iterated function systems, previously introduced by the authors.

Smooth projections of self-similar measures

We prove a Furstenberg-type criterion for a given orthogonal projection of a self-similar measure to be absolutely continuous, with quantified regularity. It requires exponential mixing of the rotational part at a rate that is sufficiently fast compared with an orbit relative analogue of its dimension. Using Ramanujan sets of irrational rotations in \(\mathrm{SO}(3)\) constructed by Lubotzky, Phillips and Sarnak (1986, 1987), we obtain explicit applications. In particular, we exhibit singular self-similar measures whose every line projection is absolutely continuous, measures of arbitrarily small Fourier dimension with smooth projections in all but a fully explicit exceptional set of directions, and a non-trivial example of a self-similar measure that is Salem with a $C^2 _0$ density.

Uniformly perfect measures on strictly convex planar graphs are $L^{2}$-flattening

Uniformly perfect measures are a common generalisation of Ahlfors regular measures, self-conformal measures on the line, and their push-forwards under sufficiently regular maps. We show that every uniformly perfect measure $\sigma$ on a strictly convex planar $C^{2}$-graph is $L^{2}$-flattening. That is, for every $\epsilon>0$, there exists $p = p(\epsilon,\sigma) \geq 1$ such that $$\|\hat{\sigma}\|_{L^{p}(B(R))}^{p} \lesssim_{\epsilon,\sigma} R^{\epsilon}, \qquad R \geq 1.$$

$L^2$-Flattening of Self-similar Measures on Non-degenerate Curves

Let $\mu$ be a non-atomic self-similar measure on $\mathbb{R}$, and let $\nu$ be its pushforward to a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb{R}^d, d\geq 1$. We show that for every $\epsilon>0$, there is $p>1$, so that $\left \lVert \hat{\nu} \right \rVert_{L^p(B(R))}^p = O_\epsilon(R^\epsilon)$ for all $R>1$, where $B(R)$ is the $R$-ball about the origin. As a corollary, we show that convolution with $\nu$ quantitatively improves $L^2$-dimension.

Recent progress on pointwise normality of self-similar measures

This article is an exposition of recent results and methods on the prevalence of normal numbers in the support of self-similar measures on the line. We also provide an essentially self-contained proof of a recent Theorem that the Rajchman property (decay of the Fourier transform) implies that typical elements in the support of the measure are normal to all bases; as no decay rate is required, this improves the classical criterion of Davenport, Erdos, and LeVeque (1964). Open problems regarding effective equidistribution, non-integer bases, and higher order correlations, are discussed.

How linear can a non-linear hyperbolic IFS be?

Motivated by a question of M. Hochman, we construct examples of hyperbolic IFSs $\Phi$ on $[0,1]$ where linear and non-linear behaviour coexist. Namely, for every $2\leq r \leq \infty$ we exhibit the existence of a $C^r$-smooth IFS such that $f'\equiv c(\Phi)$ on the attractor and $f''\equiv 0$ for every $f \in \Phi$, yet $\Phi$ is not $C^t$-smooth for any $t>r$, nor $C^r$-conjugate to self-similar. We provide a complete classification of these systems. Furthermore, when $r>1$, we give a necessary and sufficient Livsic-like matching condition for a self-conformal $C^r$-smooth IFS to be conjugated to one of these systems having $f''=0$ on the attractor, for every $f\in \Phi$. We also show that this condition fails to ensure the existence of a $C^1$-conjugacy in mere $C^1$-regularity.

New results on embeddings of self-similar sets via renormalization

For self-similar sets $X,Y\subseteq \mathbb{R}$, we obtain new results towards the affine embeddings conjecture of Feng-Huang-Rao (2014), and the equivalent weak intersections conjecture. We show that the conjecture holds when the defining maps of $X,Y$ have algebraic contraction ratios, and also for arbitrary $Y$ when the maps defining $X$ have algebraic-contraction ratios and there are sufficiently many of them relative to the number of maps defining $Y$. We also show that it holds for a.e. choice of the corresponding contraction ratios, and obtain bounds on the packing dimension of the exceptional parameters. Key ingredients in our argument include a new renormalization procedure in the space of embeddings, and Orponen's projection Theorem for Assouad dimension (2021).

On the dimension of orthogonal projections of self-similar measures

Let $\nu$ be a self similar measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, and let $\pi$ be an orthogonal projection onto a $k$-dimensional subspace. We formulate a criterion on the action of the group generated by the orthogonal parts of the IFS on $\pi$, and show that it ensures the dimension of $\pi \nu$ is preserved; this significantly refines previous results by Hochman-Shmerkin (2012) and Falconer-Jin (2014), and is sharp for projections to lines and hyperplanes. A key ingredient in the proof is an application of a restricted projection theorem of Gan-Guo-Wang (2024).

Spectral gaps and Fourier decay for self-conformal measures in the plane

Let $\Phi$ be a $C^\omega (\mathbb{C})$ self-conformal IFS on the plane, satisfying some mild non-linearity and irreducibility conditions. We prove a uniform spectral gap estimate for the transfer operator corresponding to the derivative cocycle and every given self-conformal measure. Building on this result, we establish polynomial Fourier decay for any such measure. Our technique is based on a refinement of a method of Oh-Winter (2017) where we do not require separation from the IFS or the Federer property for the underlying measure.

Arbitrarily slow decay in the logarithmically averaged Sarnak conjecture

In 2017 Tao proposed a variant Sarnak's M\"{o}bius disjointness conjecture with logarithmic averaging: For any zero entropy dynamical system $(X,T)$, $\frac{1}{\log N} \sum_{n=1} ^N \frac{f(T^n x) \mu (n)}{n}= o(1)$ for every $f\in \mathcal{C}(X)$ and every $x\in X$. We construct examples showing that this $o(1)$ can go to zero arbitrarily slowly. Nonetheless, all of our examples satisfy the conjecture.

Van der Corput and metric theorems for geometric progressions for self-similar measures

We prove a van der Corput lemma for non-atomic self-similar measures $\mu$. As an application, we show that the correlations of all finite orders of $( x^n \mod 1 )_{n\geq 1}$ converge to the Poissonian model for $\mu$-a.e. $x$, assuming $x>1$. We also complete a recent result of Algom, Rodriguez Hertz, and Wang (obtained simultaneously by Baker and Banaji), showing that any self-conformal measure with respect to a non-affine real analytic IFS has polynomial Fourier decay.

Polynomial Fourier decay and a cocycle version of Dolgopyat's method for self conformal measures

We show that every self conformal measure with respect to a $C^2 (\mathbb{R})$ IFS $\Phi$ has polynomial Fourier decay under some mild and natural non-linearity conditions. In particular, every such measure has polynomial decay if $\Phi$ is $C^\omega (\mathbb{R})$ and contains a non-affine map. A key ingredient in our argument is a cocycle version of Dolgopyat's method, that does not require the cylinder covering of the attractor to be a Markov partition. It is used to obtain spectral gap-type estimates for the transfer operator, which in turn imply a renewal theorem with an exponential error term in the spirit of Li (2022).

Large slices through self affine carpets

Let $F\subseteq [0,1]^2$ be a Bedford-McMullen carpet defined by exponents $m>n$, that projects to $[0,1]$ on the $y$-axis. We show that under mild conditions on $F$, there are many non principle lines $\ell$ such that $\dim^* F\cap \ell = \dim^* F -1$, where $\dim^*$ is Furstenberg's star dimension (maximal dimension of a microset). This exhibits the sharpness of recent Furstenberg-type slicing theorems obtained by Algom (2020) about upper bounds on the dimension of every such slice.

Arbitrarily slow decay in the M\"{o}bius disjointness conjecture

Sarnak's M\"{o}bius disjointness conjecture asserts that for any zero entropy dynamical system $(X,T)$, $\frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1} ^N f(T^n x) \mu (n)= o(1)$ for every $f\in \mathcal{C}(X)$ and every $x\in X$. We construct examples showing that this $o(1)$ can go to zero arbitrarily slowly. In fact, our methods yield a more general result, where in lieu of $\mu(n)$ one can put any bounded sequence such that the Ces\`aro mean of the corresponding sequence of absolute values does not tend to zero.

On normal numbers and self-similar measures

Let $\lbrace f_i(x)=s_i \cdot x+t_i \rbrace$ be a self-similar IFS on $\mathbb{R}$ and let $\beta >1$ be a Pisot number. We prove that if $\frac{\log |s_i|}{\log \beta}\notin \mathbb{Q}$ for some $i$ then for every $C^1$ diffeomorphism $g$ and every non-atomic self similar measure $\mu$, the measure $g\mu$ is supported on numbers that are normal in base $\beta$.

math.DS

Pointwise normality and Fourier decay for self-conformal measures

Let $Φ$ be a $C^{1+γ}$ smooth IFS on $\mathbb{R}$, where $γ>0$. We provide mild conditions on the derivative cocycle that ensure that every self conformal measure is supported on points $x$ that are absolutely normal. That is, for integer $p\geq 2$ the sequence $\lbrace p^k x \rbrace_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ equidistributes modulo $1$. We thus extend several state of the art results of Hochman and Shmerkin about the prevalence of normal numbers in fractals. When $Φ$ is self-similar we show that the set of absolutely normal numbers has full Hausdorff dimension in its attractor, unless $Φ$ has an explicit structure that is associated with some integer $n\geq 2$. These conditions on the derivative cocycle are also shown to imply that every self conformal measure is a Rajchman measure, that is, its Fourier transform decays to $0$ at infinity. When $Φ$ is self similar and satisfies a certain Diophantine condition, we establish a logarithmic rate of decay.

Logarithmic Fourier decay for self conformal measures

We prove that the Fourier transform of a self conformal measure on $\mathbb{R}$ decays to $0$ at infinity at a logarithmic rate, unless the following holds: The underlying IFS is smoothly conjugated to an IFS that both acts linearly on its attractor and contracts by scales that are not Diophantine. Our key technical result is an effective version of a local limit Theorem for cocycles with moderate deviations due to Benoist-Quint (2016), that is of independent interest.
