Cryogenic Dielectric Metasurface-Integrated Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors

Over the past decade, multi-element superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have emerged as the leading single-photon detection technology due to their exceptional system detection efficiency (SDE), ultrahigh timing precision, negligible dark counts, etc. However, achieving these performances with a \textit{single-element} SNSPD has been an outstanding challenge due to a fundamental trade-off: a large active area is necessary for high SDE, while a smaller area is crucial for higher photon count rates, lower dark counts, and lower jitter. Here, we introduce an all-dielectric cryogenic metalens integrated with a single-element SNSPD to achieve high SDE with a smaller active area. Furthermore, we leverage a bifunctional metalens to demonstrate polarization-resolved photodetection at the telecommunication wavelength theoretically. Integrating multifunctional cryogenic metaurfaces with the state-of-the-art SNSPDs may enable novel capabilities with reduced size, weight, power, cost, and cooling (SWaP-C$^{2}$) requirements.

Beating the standard quantum limit with single-photon-added coherent states

The standard quantum limit (SQL), also known as the shot-noise limit, defines how quantum fluctuations of light constrain measurement precision. In a benchmark experiment using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), where a coherent state with the average photon number $\langle n\rangle$ is combined with an ordinary vacuum input, the SQL for the phase uncertainty is given by the well-known relation $Δφ_{\text{SQL}} = 1/\langle n\rangle$. Using a single photon-added coherent state and a weak coherent state as inputs, we report an enhanced phase sensitivity in MZI surpassing the SQL. In stark contrast to other approaches, we focus on the low-photon-number regime, $\langle n\rangle < 10$, and demonstrate that our scheme offers better phase sensitivity compared to the SQL. Beating the SQL at low photon numbers paves the way for the new generation of devices employed in \textquotedblleft photon-starved\textquotedblright quantum sensing, spectroscopy, and metrology.

Exceptional Point Generated Robust Asymmetric High-Order Harmonics

We propose a metallic-silicon system with a complex optical potential modulated along the length of the waveguide for a robust higher harmonic generation. For right moving fields when the strength of non-Hermiticity becomes equal to the real part of the optical potential, the dynamical equations associated with modal field amplitudes in our proposed system are described by a Jordan form Hamiltonian. This ultimately will allow for a unidirectional higher frequency generation which always has a maximum value for a specific length of the waveguide irrespective of the geometrical imperfections in the design of the waveguide. Furthermore, the phase of the generated higher harmonic mode becomes independent of the coupling between the fundamental frequency and higher harmonic one. Unlike other proposed spatiotemporal modulated systems when the system has a Jordan form Hamiltonian, the fundamental mode remains reciprocal while the harmonic generation is non-reciprocal. Consequently, while the proposed device cannot be used as an optical isolator it can be used for many other devices such as laser cavities, interferometry, and holographic processes.
