The non-perturbative topological string: from resurgence to wall-crossing of DT invariants

We study the resurgence structure of the topological string partition function, with an emphasis on the Borel analysis of the instanton amplitudes. To this end, we introduce a differential operator that implements the pointed alien derivative when acting on the topological string partition function and its iterated alien derivatives. We show that the algebra of alien derivatives is isomorphic to the Kontsevich-Soibelman Lie algebra, thus establishing a direct link between the resurgence of the topological string and wall-crossing of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants. Numerically, we continue the exploration of the Borel plane of the quintic and local $\mathbb{P}^2$. For the latter, we identify Borel singularities due to bound states involving D4-branes, and match the associated Stokes constants to the appropriate Donaldson-Thomas invariants. Finally, we identify the manifestation of a D2-brane decay in the Borel plane, and match to theoretical predictions.

Borel singularities and Stokes constants of the topological string free energy on one-parameter Calabi-Yau threefolds

We study the Borel plane of the topological string free energy on all hypergeometric one-parameter Calabi-Yau models close to singular points in moduli space, focusing on the location of Borel singularities and the value of the associated Stokes constants. We find in particular that in models which exhibit massless D-branes at a singular point, the central charge of the D-brane close to the singular point coincides with the location of the leading Borel singularity, and the generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariant associated to the charge of the D-brane, in as far as its value is known, coincides with the Stokes constant associated to the Borel singularity.

The twisted geometry of 6d F-theory vacua with discrete gauge symmetries

We study the fate of discrete gauge groups and discrete charges of gravitational theories under twisted circle compactification. We then apply our results to six-dimensional F-theory vacua with discrete gauge symmetries and relate them to the geometry of the genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds that underlie the dual M-theory compactifications. This leads us to introduce a class of geometries, which we call almost generic elliptic/genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds, and to make detailed conjectures about their properties. A second twisted circle compactification relates these M-theory vacua to Type IIA compactifications with flat but topologically non-trivial B-fields along the internal geometry. The A-model topological string partition function on such configurations is intimately tied to the twisted-twined elliptic genera of the six-dimensional non-critical strings of the associated F-theory vacuum. The modular properties of the twisted-twined elliptic genera imply new twisted derived equivalences. We thus recover and significantly extend earlier results from both the physical and the mathematical literature. An important outcome of our study is that if the discrete gauge symmetry is not cyclic, then no smooth genus one fibration exists that represents the associated axio-dilaton profile.

Affine characters at negative level and elliptic genera of non-critical strings

We study the elliptic genera of the non-critical strings of six dimensional superconformal field theories from the point of view of the strings' worldsheet theory. We formulate a general ansatz for these in terms of characters of the affine Lie algebra associated to the 6d gauge group at negative level, and provide ample evidence for the validity of this ansatz for 6d theories obtained via F-theory compactification on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds over a Hirzebruch base. We obtain novel closed form results for many elliptic genera in terms of our ansatz, and show that our results specialize consistently when moving along Higgsing trees.

Non-perturbative topological string theory on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds

We obtain analytic and numerical results for the non-perturbative amplitudes of topological string theory on arbitrary, compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our approach is based on the theory of resurgence and extends previous special results to the more general case. In particular, we obtain explicit trans-series solutions of the holomorphic anomaly equations. Our results predict the all orders, large genus asymptotics of the topological string free energies, which we test in detail against high genus perturbative series obtained recently in the compact case. We also provide additional evidence that the Stokes constants appearing in the resurgent structure are closely related to integer BPS invariants.

Time reversal and $\boldsymbol{CP}$ invariance in Calabi-Yau compactifications

We revisit the question of time reversal and $CP$ invariance in Calabi-Yau compactifications. We show that time reversal invariance is respected by quantum corrections to the prepotential. In particular, field independent $θ$ angles whose presence is dictated by requiring integrality of relevant monodromy transformations can take precisely the quantized values compatible with time reversal invariance. Furthermore, monodromy symmetry enlarges the region on moduli space on which time reversal is not spontaneously broken. We define the action of the $CP$ transformation for multi-parameter models and argue that on the slice of moduli space where it is defined, $CP$ is trivially a symmetry of the theory. For supersymmetric vacua that lie in this slice, we derive a condition on the third cohomology of the compactification manifold which determines whether $CP$ preserving fluxes exist that stabilize the moduli to such points. In the case of one-parameter models, the condition is always satisfied.

Determining F-theory matter via Gromov-Witten invariants

We show how to use Gromov-Witten invariants to determine the matter content of F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds $X$ over Hirzebruch surfaces. To determine the representations of these matter multiplets under the gauge algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we use toric methods to embed the weight lattice of $\mathfrak{g}$ into the integer homology lattice of $X$. We then apply mirror symmetry to determine whether classes in this lattice which correspond to weights of given representations are represented by irreducible curves. Applying mirror symmetry efficiently to such geometries requires obtaining good approximations to their Mori cones. We propose an algorithm for obtaining such approximations. When the algorithm yields a smooth cone, we find that the latter in fact coincides with the Mori cone of $X$ and already contains information on the matter content of compactifications on $X$. Our algorithm relies on studying toric ambient spaces for the Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X$ which are merely birationally equivalent to fibrations over Hirzebruch surfaces. We study the flops relating such varieties in detail.

Weyl invariant Jacobi forms along Higgsing trees

Using topological string techniques, we compute BPS counting functions of 5d gauge theories which descend from 6d superconformal field theories upon circle compactification. Such theories are naturally organized in terms of nodes of Higgsing trees. We demonstrate that the specialization of the partition function as we move from the crown to the root of a tree is determined by homomorphisms between rings of Weyl invariant Jacobi forms. Our computations are made feasible by the fact that symmetry enhancements of the gauge theory which are manifest on the massless spectrum are inherited by the entire tower of BPS particles. In some cases, these symmetry enhancements have a nice relation to the 1-form symmetry of the associated gauge theory.

Computing the elliptic genus of higher rank E-strings from genus 0 GW invariants

We show that the elliptic genus of the higher rank E-strings can be computed based solely on the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the corresponding elliptic geometry. To set up our computation, we study the structure of the topological string free energy on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds both in the unrefined and the refined case, determining the maximal amount of the modular structure of the partition function that can be salvaged. In the case of fibrations exhibiting only isolated fibral curves, we show that the principal parts of the topological string partition function at given base-wrapping can be computed from the knowledge of the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants at this base-wrapping, and the partition function at lower base-wrappings. For the class of geometries leading to the higher rank E-strings, this leads to the result stated in the opening sentence.

Topological Strings on Singular Elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Minimal 6d SCFTs

We apply the modular approach to computing the topological string partition function on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds with higher Kodaira singularities in the fiber. The approach consists in making an ansatz for the partition function at given base degree, exact in all fiber classes to arbitrary order and to all genus, in terms of a rational function of weak Jacobi forms. Our results yield, at given base degree, the elliptic genus of the corresponding non-critical 6d string, and thus the associated BPS invariants of the 6d theory. The required elliptic indices are determined from the chiral anomaly 4-form of the 2d worldsheet theories, or the 8-form of the corresponding 6d theories, and completely fix the holomorphic anomaly equation constraining the partition function. We introduce subrings of the known rings of Weyl invariant Jacobi forms which are adapted to the additional symmetries of the partition function, making its computation feasible to low base wrapping number. In contradistinction to the case of simpler singularities, generic vanishing conditions on BPS numbers are no longer sufficient to fix the modular ansatz at arbitrary base wrapping degree. We show that to low degree, imposing exact vanishing conditions does suffice, and conjecture this to be the case generally.

Refined BPS invariants of 6d SCFTs from anomalies and modularity

F-theory compactifications on appropriate local elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds engineer six dimensional superconformal field theories and their mass deformations. The partition function $Z_{top}$ of the refined topological string on these geometries captures the particle BPS spectrum of this class of theories compactified on a circle. Organizing $Z_{top}$ in terms of contributions $Z_β$ at base degree $β$ of the elliptic fibration, we find that these, up to a multiplier system, are meromorphic Jacobi forms of weight zero with modular parameter the Kaehler class of the elliptic fiber and elliptic parameters the couplings and mass parameters. The indices with regard to the multiple elliptic parameters are fixed by the refined holomorphic anomaly equations, which we show to be completely determined from knowledge of the chiral anomaly of the corresponding SCFT. We express $Z_β$ as a quotient of weak Jacobi forms, with a universal denominator inspired by its pole structure as suggested by the form of $Z_{top}$ in terms of 5d BPS numbers. The numerator is determined by modularity up to a finite number of coefficients, which we prove to be fixed uniquely by imposing vanishing conditions on 5d BPS numbers as boundary conditions. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with many examples, in particular solving the E-string and M-string theories including mass deformations, as well as theories constructed as chains of these. We make contact with previous work by showing that spurious singularities are cancelled when the partition function is written in the form advocated here. Finally, we use the BPS invariants of the E-string thus obtained to test a generalization of the Goettsche-Nakajima-Yoshioka $K$-theoretic blowup equation, as inspired by the Grassi-Hatsuda-Marino conjecture, to generic local Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Quantization condition from exact WKB for difference equations

A well-motivated conjecture states that the open topological string partition function on toric geometries in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit is annihilated by a difference operator called the quantum mirror curve. Recently, the complex structure variables parameterizing the curve, which play the role of eigenvalues for related operators, were conjectured to satisfy a quantization condition non-perturbative in the NS parameter $\hbar$. Here, we argue that this quantization condition arises from requiring single-valuedness of the partition function, combined with the requirement of smoothness in the parameter $\hbar$. To determine the monodromy of the partition function, we study the underlying difference equation in the framework of exact WKB.

Pure N=2 Super Yang-Mills and Exact WKB

We apply exact WKB methods to the study of the partition function of pure N=2 epsilon_i-deformed gauge theory in four dimensions in the context of the 2d/4d correspondence. We study the partition function at leading order in epsilon_2/epsilon_1 (i.e. at large central charge) and in an expansion in epsilon_1. We find corrections of the form ~ exp[- SW periods / epsilon_1] to this expansion. We attribute these to the exchange of the order of summation over gauge instanton number and over powers of epsilon_1 when passing from the Nekrasov form of the partition function to the topological string theory inspired form. We conjecture that such corrections should be computable from a worldsheet perspective on the partition function. Our results follow upon the determination of the Stokes graphs associated to the Mathieu equation with complex parameters and the application of exact WKB techniques to compute the Mathieu characteristic exponent.

Computing Z_top

This is the text of my habilitation thesis defended at the École Normale Supérieure. The topological string presents an arena in which many features of string theory proper, such as the interplay between worldsheet and target space descriptions or open-closed duality, can be distilled into computational techniques which yield results beyond perturbation theory. In this thesis, I will summarize my research activity in this area. The presentation is organized around computations of the topological string partition function Z_top based on various perspectives on the topological string.

Quantum geometry from the toroidal block

We continue our study of the semi-classical (large central charge) expansion of the toroidal one-point conformal block in the context of the 2d/4d correspondence. We demonstrate that the Seiberg-Witten curve and (epsilon1-deformed) differential emerge naturally in conformal field theory when computing the block via null vector decoupling equations. This framework permits us to derive epsilon1-deformations of the conventional relations governing the prepotential. These enable us to complete the proof of the quasi-modularity of the coefficients of the conformal block in an expansion around large exchanged conformal dimension. We furthermore derive these relations from the semi-classics of exact conformal field theory quantities, such as braiding matrices and the S-move kernel. In the course of our study, we present a new proof of Matone's relation for N=2* theory.

Transformations of Spherical Blocks

We further explore the correspondence between N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory with four flavors on epsilon-deformed backgrounds and conformal field theory, with an emphasis on the epsilon-expansion of the partition function natural from a topological string theory point of view. Solving an appropriate null vector decoupling equation in the semi-classical limit allows us to express the instanton partition function as a series in quasi-modular forms of the group Gamma(2), with the expected symmetry Weyl group of SO(8) semi-direct S_3. In the presence of an elementary surface operator, this symmetry is enhanced to an action of the affine Weyl group of SO(8) semi-direct S_4 on the instanton partition function, as we demonstrate via the link between the null vector decoupling equation and the quantum Painlevé VI equation.

The toroidal block and the genus expansion

We study the correspondence between four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and two-dimensional conformal field theories in the case of N=2* gauge theory. We emphasize the genus expansion on the gauge theory side, as obtained via geometric engineering from the topological string. This point of view uncovers modular properties of the one-point conformal block on a torus with complexified intermediate momenta: in the large intermediate weight limit, it is a power series whose coefficients are quasi-modular forms. The all-genus viewpoint that the conformal field theory approach lends to the topological string yields insight into the analytic structure of the topological string partition function in the field theory limit.

The Omega deformed B-model for rigid N=2 theories

We give an interpretation of the Omega deformed B-model that leads naturally to the generalized holomorphic anomaly equations. Direct integration of the latter calculates topological amplitudes of four dimensional rigid N=2 theories explicitly in general Omega-backgrounds in terms of modular forms. These amplitudes encode the refined BPS spectrum as well as new gravitational couplings in the effective action of N=2 supersymmetric theories. The rigid N=2 field theories we focus on are the conformal rank one N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories. The failure of holomorphicity is milder in the conformal cases, but fixing the holomorphic ambiguity is only possible upon mass deformation. Our formalism applies irrespectively of whether a Lagrangian formulation exists. In the class of rigid N=2 theories arising from compactifications on local Calabi-Yau manifolds, we consider the theory of local P2. We calculate motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for this geometry and make predictions for generalized Gromov-Witten invariants at the orbifold point.
