Effect of long range connections on an infinite randomness fixed point associated with the quantum phase transitions in a transverse Ising model

We study the effect of long-range connections on the infinite-randomness fixed point associated with the quantum phase transitions in a transverse Ising model (TIM). The TIM resides on a long-range connected lattice where any two sites at a distance r are connected with a non-random ferromagnetic bond with a probability that falls algebraically with the distance between the sites as 1/r^{d+σ}. The interplay of the fluctuations due to dilutions together with the quantum fluctuations due to the transverse field leads to an interesting critical behaviour. The exponents at the critical fixed point (which is an infinite randomness fixed point (IRFP)) are related to the classical "long-range" percolation exponents. The most interesting observation is that the gap exponent ψis exactly obtained for all values of σand d. Exponents depend on the range parameter σand show a crossover to short-range values when σ>= 2 -η_{SR} where η_{SR} is the anomalous dimension for the conventional percolation problem. Long-range connections are also found to tune the strength of the Griffiths phase.

Fibers on a graph with local load sharing

We study a random fiber bundle model with tips of the fibers placed on a graph having co-ordination number 3. These fibers follow local load sharing with uniformly distributed threshold strengths of the fibers. We have studied the critical behaviour of the model numerically using a finite size scaling method and the mean field critical behaviour is established. The avalanche size distribution is also found to exhibit a mean field nature in the asymptotic limit.

Critical behaviour of mixed random fibers, fibers on a chain and random graph

We study random fiber bundle model (RFBM) with different threshold strength distributions and load sharing rules. A mixed RFBM within global load sharing scheme is introduced which consists of weak and strong fibers with uniform distribution of threshold strength of fibers having a discontinuity. The dependence of the critical stress of the above model on the measure of the discontinuity of the distribution is extensively studied. A similar RFBM with two types of fibers belonging to two different Weibull distribution of threshold strength is also studied. The variation of the critical stress of a one dimensional RFBM with the number of fibers is obtained for strictly uniform distribution and local load sharing using an exact method which assumes one-sided load transfer. The critical behaviour of RFBM with fibers placed on a random graph having co-ordination number 3 is investigated numerically for uniformly distributed threshold strength of fibers subjected to local load sharing rule, and mean field critical behaviour is established.

Coulomb gap in one-dimensional disordered electronic systems

We study a one-dimensional system of spinless electrons in the presence of a long-range Coulomb interaction (LRCI) and a random chemical potential at each site. We first present a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) description of the system. We use the bosonization technique followed by the replica trick to average over the quenched randomness. An expression for the localization length of the system is then obtained using the renormalization group method and also a physical argument. We then find the density of states for different values of the energy; we get different expressions depending on whether the energy is larger than or smaller than the inverse of the localization length. We work in the limit of weak disorder where the localization length is very large; at that length scale, the LRCI has the effect of reducing the interaction parameter K of the TLL to a value much smaller than the noninteracting value of unity.

Quantum Spin Glass Phase Boundary in (+/-)J Transverse Field Ising Systems

Here we study zero temperature quantum phase transition driven by the transverse field for random $\pm J$ Ising model on chain and square lattice. We present some analytical results for one dimension and some numerical results for very small square lattice under periodic boundary condition. The numerical results are obtained employing exact diagonalization technique following Lanczos method.

Gapless line for the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field and the quantum axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising Chain

We study the anisotropic Heisenberg (XYZ) spin-1/2 chain placed in a magnetic field pointing along the x-axis. We use bosonization and a renormalization group analysis to show that the model has a non-trivial fixed point at a certain value of the XY anisotropy a and the magnetic field h. Hence, there is a line of critical points in the (a,h) plane on which the system is gapless, even though the Hamiltonian has no continuous symmetry. The quantum critical line corresponds to a spin-flop transition; it separates two gapped phases in one of which the Z_2 symmetry of the Hamiltonian is broken. Our study has a bearing on one of the transitions of the axial next-nearest neighbor Ising (ANNNI) chain in a transverse magnetic field. We also discuss the properties of the model when the magnetic field is increased further, in particular, the disorder line on which the ground state is a direct product of single spin states.

Gapless Phase in the XYZ Spin-1/2 Chain in a Magnetic Field and the Quantum ANNNI Chain

We study the XYZ spin-1/2 chain placed in a magnetic field pointing along the x-axis. We use bosonization and a renormalization group analysis to show that the model has a non-trivial fixed point at a certain value of the XY anisotropy a and the magnetic field h. Hence, there is a line of critical points in the plane (a,h) on which the system is gapless, even though the Hamiltonian has no continuous symmetry. The quantum critical line separates a gapped commensurate phase from a gapped incommensurate phase. Our study explains why the floating phase of the axial next-nearest neighbor Ising (ANNNI) chain in a transverse magnetic field is only a line, as shown by recent numerical studies.

Dynamics of linear polymers in random media

We study phenomenological scaling theories of the polymer dynamics in random media, employing the existing scaling theories of polymer chains and the percolation statistics. We investigate both the Rouse and the Zimm model for Brownian dynamics and estimate the diffusion constant of the center-of-mass of the chain in such disordered media. For internal dynamics of the chain, we estimate the dynamic exponents. We propose similar scaling theory for the reptation dynamics of the chain in the framework of Flory theory for the disordered medium. The modifications in the case of correlated disordered are also discussed.
