On the representation dimension of finite $p$-groups

For a finite group $G$, the representation dimension $\delta(G)$ is the least dimension of a faithful complex representation of $G$. We prove that $\delta(H\times K) = \delta(H) + \delta(K)$ whenever $H$ and $K$ are $p$-groups for a fixed prime $p$, and show by example that this additivity can fail more generally for nilpotent groups. We also determine $\delta(G)$ for several important classes of non-abelian $p$-groups, {\it viz.} VZ groups, Camina groups, and metacyclic groups; and compute $\delta(G)$ for all groups of order $p^6$ ($p\geq 5$), organized by their isoclinism family.

Defects in weighted graphs and Commutators

Let $R$ be a commutative ring. In \cite{KK_2025(1)}, the authors introduced $R$-weighted graphs as a tool for studying commutators in groups and Lie algebras. These graphs are equivalent to a system of balance equations, and their consistent labelings correspond to solutions of this system of balance equations. In this article, we apply these ideas in the case when $R$ is a field $F$. We focus on $F$-weighted graphs with four vertices and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of consistent labelings on them. A notion of defects in weighted graphs is introduced for this purpose. We prove that defects in weighted graphs prevent Lie brackets from being surjective onto its derived Lie subalgebra. Similarly, these defects prevent certain elements in the commutator subgroup of a nilpotent group of class $2$ from being a commutator. As an application of our techniques, we prove that for a Lie algebra $L$ whose dimension over $F$ is at most countable and the dimension of its derived subalgebra $L'$ is at most $3$, the Lie bracket is surjective onto $L'$. We provide a counterexample when $\dim(L') = 4$. We also characterize commutators among $L$' for the Lie algebras $L$ with $\dim(L/Z(L))\leq 4$.

$R$-weighted graphs and commutators

In this article, we introduce balance equations over commutative rings $R$ and associate $R$-weighted graphs to them so that solving balance equations corresponds to a consistent labeling of vertices of the associated graph. Our primary focus is the case when $R$ is a commutative local ring whose residue field contains at least three elements. In this case, we provide explicit solutions of balance equations. As an application, letting $R$ to be the ring of $p$-adic integers, we examine some necessary and sufficient conditions for a $p$-group of nilpotency class $2$ to have its set of commutators coincide with its commutator subgroup. We also apply our results to study the surjectivity of the Lie bracket in Lie algebras, without any restriction on their dimension and the underlined field.

Chirality and non-real elements in $G_2(q)$

In this article, we determine the non-real elements--the ones that are not conjugate to their inverses--in the group $G = G_2(q)$ when $char(F_q)\neq 2,3$. We use this to show that this group is chiral; that is, there is a word w such that $w(G)\neq w(G)^{-1}$. We also show that most classical finite simple groups are achiral

Automorphic word maps and Amit--Ashurst conjecture

In this article, we address Amit--Ashurst conjecture on lower bounds of a probability distribution associated to a word on a finite nilpotent group. We obtain an extension of a result of Camina, Iniguez, and Thillaisundaram by providing improved bounds for the case of finite nilpotent groups of class $2$ for words in an arbitrary number of variables, and also settle the conjecture in some cases. We achieve this by obtaining words that are identically distributed on a group to a given word. In doing so, we also obtain an improvement of a result of Iniguez and Sangroniz using elementary techniques.

Representation dimension of some finite groups

For a finite group $G$, the representation dimension is the smallest integer realizable as the degree of a complex faithful representation of $G$. In this article, we compute representation dimension for some $p$-groups, their direct products, and groups with certain conditions on nonlinear irreducible characters. We also make similar computations for the smallest integer realizable as the degree of an irreducible complex faithful representation of $G$, if one exists. In the appendix, we present GAP codes to compute these numbers.

Finite Splittings of Differential Matrix Algebras

It is well known that central simple algebras are split by suitable finite Galois extensions of their centers. A counterpart of this result was studied by Juan and Magid in the set up of differential matrix algebras, wherein Picard-Vessiot extensions that split matrix differential algebras were constructed. In this article, we exhibit instances of differential matrix algebras which are split by finite extensions. In some cases, we relate the existence of finite splitting extensions of a differential matrix algebra to the triviality of its tensor powers, and show in these cases, that orders of differential matrix algebras divide their degrees.

Word Images and Their Impostors in Finite Nilpotent Groups

It was shown by Lubotzky in 2014 that automorphism invariant subsets of finite simple groups which contain identity are always word images. In this article, we study word maps on finite nilpotent groups and show that for arbitrary finite groups, the number of automorphism invariant subsets containing identity which are not word images, referred to as word image impostors, may be arbitrarily larger than the number of actual word images. In the course of it, we construct a $2$-exhaustive set of word maps on nilpotent groups of class $2$ and demonstrate its minimality in some cases.

Asymptotics of the powers in finite reductive groups

Let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over $\mathbb F_q$. Fix an integer $M\geq 2$, and consider the power map $x\mapsto x^M$ on $G$. We denote the image of $G(\mathbb F_q)$ under this map by $G(\mathbb F_q)^M$ and estimate what proportion of regular semisimple, semisimple and regular elements of $G(\mathbb F_q)$ it contains. We prove that as $q\to\infty$, all of these proportions are equal and provide a formula for the same. We also calculate this more explicitly for the groups $\text{GL}(n,q)$ and $\text{U}(n,q)$.

Computing $n^{\rm th}$ roots in $SL_2$ and Fibonacci polynomials

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $\neq 2$. In this paper we study squares, cubes and their products in split and anisotropic groups of type $A_1$. In split case, we show that computing $n^{\rm th}$ roots is equivalent to finding solutions of certain polynomial equations in at most two variables over the base field $k$. The description of these polynomials involves generalised Fibonacci polynomials. Using this we obtain asymptotic proportions of $n^{\rm th}$ powers, and conjugacy classes which are $n^{\rm th}$ powers, in ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb F_q)$ when $n$ is a prime or $n = 4$. We also extend already known Waring type result for ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb F_q)$, that every element of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb F_q)$ is a product of two squares, to ${\rm SL}_2(k)$ for an arbitrary $k$. For anisotropic groups of type $A_1$, namely ${\rm SL}_1(Q)$ where $Q$ is a quaternion division algebra, we prove that when $2$ is a square in $k$, every element of ${\rm SL}_1(Q)$ is a product of two squares if and only if $-1$ is a square in ${\rm SL}_1(Q)$.

On Shalev's conjecture for type $A_n$ and ${}^{2}A_n$

In the paper we consider images of finite simple projective special linear and unitary groups under power words. In particular, we show that if $G\simeq \PSL_n^\varepsilon (q)$, then for every power words of type $x^M$ there exist constant $c$ and $N$ such that $\vert ω(G)\vert >c\frac{\vert G\vert }{n}$ whenether $\vert G\vert >N$.

Characters of real special 2-groups

It is well-known that special 2-groups can be described in terms of quadratic maps over fields of characteristic 2. In this article we develop methods to compute conjugacy classes, complex representations and characters of a real special $2$-group using quadratic maps alone.

Strongly real special 2-groups

Strongly real groups and totally orthogonal groups form two important subclasses of real groups. In this article we give a characterization of strongly real special 2-groups. This characterization is in terms of quadratic maps over fields of characteristic 2. We then provide examples of groups which are in one subclass and not the other.

Real Elements and Schur Indices of a Group

In this article we try to explore the relation between real conjugacy classes and real characters of finite groups at more refined level. This refinement is in terms of properties of groups such as strong reality and total orthogonality. In this connection we raise several questions and record several examples which have motivated those questions.
