The quark anti-quark potential and the cusp anomalous dimension from a TBA equation

We derive a set of integral equations of the TBA type for the generalized cusp anomalous dimension, or the quark antiquark potential on the three sphere, as a function of the angles. We do this by considering a family of local operators on a Wilson loop with charge L. In the large L limit the problem can be solved in terms of a certain boundary reflection matrix. We determine this reflection matrix by using the symmetries and the boundary crossing equation. The cusp is introduced through a relative rotation between the two boundaries. Then the TBA trick of exchanging space and time leads to an exact equation for all values of L. The L=0 case corresponds to the cusped Wilson loop with no operators inserted. We then derive a slightly simplified integral equation which describes the small angle limit. We solve this equation up to three loops in perturbation theory and match the results that were obtained with more direct approaches.

The cusp anomalous dimension at three loops and beyond

We derive an analytic formula at three loops for the cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_cusp(phi) in N=4 super Yang-Mills. This is done by exploiting the relation of the latter to the Regge limit of massive amplitudes. We comment on the corresponding three loops quark anti-quark potential. Our result also determines a considerable part of the three-loop cusp anomalous dimension in QCD. Finally, we consider a limit in which only ladder diagrams contribute to physical observables. In that limit, a precise agreement with strong coupling is observed.

Tailoring Three-Point Functions and Integrability III. Classical Tunneling

We compute three-point functions between one large classical operator and two large BPS operators at weak coupling. We consider operators made out of the scalars of N=4 SYM, dual to strings moving in the sphere. The three-point function exponentiates and can be thought of as a classical tunneling process in which the classical string-like operator decays into two classical BPS states. From an Integrability/Condensed Matter point of view, we simplified inner products of spin chain Bethe states in a classical limit corresponding to long wavelength excitations above the ferromagnetic vacuum. As a by-product we solved a new long-range Ising model in the thermodynamic limit.

OPE for Super Loops

We extend the Operator Product Expansion for Null Polygon Wilson loops to the Mason-Skinner-Caron-Huot super loop, dual to non MHV gluon amplitudes. We explain how the known tree level amplitudes can be promoted into an infinite amount of data at any loop order in the OPE picture. As an application, we re-derive all one loop NMHV six gluon amplitudes by promoting their tree level expressions. We also present some new all loops predictions for these amplitudes.

Tailoring Three-Point Functions and Integrability II. Weak/strong coupling match

We compute three-point functions of single trace operators in planar N=4 SYM. We consider the limit where one of the operators is much smaller than the other two. We find a precise match between weak and strong coupling in the Frolov-Tseytlin classical limit for a very general class of classical solutions. To achieve this match we clarify the issue of back-reaction and identify precisely which three-point functions are captured by a classical computation.

Tailoring Three-Point Functions and Integrability

We use Integrability techniques to compute structure constants in N=4 SYM to leading order. Three closed spin chains, which represent the single trace gauge-invariant operators in N=4 SYM, are cut into six open chains which are then sewed back together into some nice pants, the three-point function. The algebraic and coordinate Bethe ansatz tools necessary for this task are reviewed. Finally, we discuss the classical limit of our results, anticipating some predictions for quasi-classical string correlators in terms of algebraic curves.

Bootstrapping Null Polygon Wilson Loops

We derive the two loop expressions for polygonal Wilson loops by starting from the one loop expressions and applying an operator product expansion. We do this for polygonal Wilson loops in R^{1,1} and find a result in agreement with previous computations. We also discuss the spectrum of excitations around flux tube that connects two null Wilson lines.

Pulling the straps of polygons

Using the Operator Product Expansion for Wilson loops we derive a simple formula giving the discontinuities of the two loop result in terms of the one loop answer. We also argue that the knowledge of these discontinuities should be enough to fix the full two loop answer, for a general number of sides. We work this out explicitly for the case of the hexagon and rederive the known result.

An Operator Product Expansion for Polygonal null Wilson Loops

We consider polygonal Wilson loops with null edges in conformal gauge theories. We derive an OPE-like expansion when several successive lines of the polygon are becoming aligned. The limit corresponds to a collinear, or multicollinear, limit and we explain the systematics of all the subleading corrections, going beyond the leading terms that were previously considered. These subleading corrections are governed by excitations of high spin operators, or excitations of a flux tube that goes between two Wilson lines. The discussion is valid for any conformal gauge theory, for any coupling and in any dimension. For N=4 super Yang Mills we check this expansion at strong coupling and at two loops at weak coupling . We also make predictions for the remainder function at higher loops. In the process, we also derived a new version for the TBA integral equations that determine the strong coupling answer and present the area as the associated Yang-Yang functional.

Y-system for Scattering Amplitudes

We compute N=4 Super Yang Mills planar amplitudes at strong coupling by considering minimal surfaces in AdS_5 space. The surfaces end on a null polygonal contour at the boundary of AdS. We show how to compute the area of the surfaces as a function of the conformal cross ratios characterizing the polygon at the boundary. We reduce the problem to a simple set of functional equations for the cross ratios as functions of the spectral parameter. These equations have the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations. The area is the free energy of the TBA system. We consider any number of gluons and in any kinematic configuration.

Symmetries of the N=4 SYM S-matrix

Under the assumption of a CSW generalization to loop amplitudes in N=4 SYM, (1) We prove that, formally the S-matrix is superconformal invariant to any loop order, and (2) We argue that superconformal symmetry survives regularization. More precisely, IR safe quantities constructed from the S-matrix are superconformal covariant. The IR divergences are regularized in a new holomorphic anomaly friendly regularization. The CSW prescription is known to be valid for all tree level amplitudes and for one loop MHV amplitudes. In these cases, our formal results do not rely on any assumptions.

Non-commutative holography and scattering amplitudes in a large magnetic background

We study planar gluon scattering amplitudes and Wilson loops in non-commutative gauge theory. Our main results are: 1. We find the map between observables in non-commutative gauge theory and their holographic dual. In that map, the region near the boundary of the gravitational dual describes the physics in terms of T-dual variables. 2. We show that in the presence of a large magnetic background and a UV regulator, a planar gluon scattering amplitude reduces to a complex polygon Wilson loop expectation value, dressed by a tractable polarization dependent factor.

Planar scattering amplitudes from Wilson loops

We derive an expression for parton scattering amplitudes of planar gauge theory in terms of sums of Wilson loops. We study in detail the example of Yang-Mills theory with an adjoint Higgs field. The expression exhibits the T-duality performed by Alday and Maldacena in the AdS dual as a Fourier transform in loop space. When combined with the AdS/CFT correspondence for Wilson loops and a strong coupling argument for the dominance of 1PI diagrams, this leads to a derivation of the Alday-Maldacena holographic prescription for scattering amplitudes in terms of momentum Wilson loops. The formula leads to a conjecture for a relationship between position-space and momentum-space Wilson loops in N=4 SYM at finite coupling.

Quark scattering amplitudes at strong coupling

Following Alday and Maldacena, we describe a string theory method to compute the strong coupling behavior of the scattering amplitudes of quarks and gluons in planar N=2 super Yang-Mills theory in the probe approximation. Explicit predictions for these quantities can be constructed using the all-orders planar gluon scattering amplitudes of N=4 super Yang-Mills due to Bern, Dixon and Smirnov.

Scattering of twist fields from D-branes and orientifolds

We compute the two-point function for Z_N orbifold twist fields on the disk and RP2. We apply this to a computation of the O(g_s) correction to the Kahler potential for (the symmetric combination of) blow-up modes in type I string theory on T^6/Z_3. This is related by supersymmetry to the one-loop field dependent correction to the Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term for the anomalous U(1) factor. We find this correction to be non-vanishing away from the orbifold point.

Exact N=4 correlators of AdS(3)/CFT(2)

We extend to chiral N=4 operators the holographic agreement recently found between correlators of the symmetric orbifold of M^4 at large N and type IIB strings propagating in AdS(3) x S^3 x M^4, where M^4=T^4 or K3. We also present expressions for some bulk correlators not yet computed in the boundary.

Holography and Renormalization in Lorentzian Signature

De Boer et. al. have found an asymptotic equivalence between the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for supergravity in (d+1)-dimensional asymptotic anti-de Sitter space, and the Callan-Symanzik equations for the dual d-dimensional perturbed conformal field theory. We discuss this correspondence in Lorentzian signature. We construct a gravitational dual of the generating function of correlation functions between initial and final states, in accordance with the construction of Marolf, and find a class of states for which the result has a classical supergravity limit. We show how the data specifying the full set of solutions to the second-order supergravity equations of motion are described in the field theory, despite the first-order nature of the renormalization group equations for the running couplings: one must specify both the couplings and the states, and the latter affects the solutions to the Callan-Symanzik equations.

Strings in a 2-d Extremal Black Hole

String theory on 2-d charged black holes corresponding to (SL(2)xU(1)_L)/U(1) exact asymmetric quotient CFTs are investigated. These backgrounds can be embedded, in particular, in a two dimensional heterotic string. In the extremal case, the quotient CFT description captures the near horizon physics, and is equivalent to strings in AdS_2 with a gauge field. Such string vacua possess an infinite space-time Virasoro symmetry, and hence enhancement of global space-time Lie symmetries to affine symmetries, in agreement with the conjectured AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence. We argue that the entropy of these 2-d black holes in string theory is compatible with semi-classical results, and show that in perturbative computations part of an incoming flux is absorbed by the black hole. Moreover, on the way we find evidence that the 2-d heterotic string is closely related to the N=(2,1) string, and conjecture that they are dual.
