The Kerr-de Sitter spacetime in Bondi coordinates

We use zero angular momentum null geodesics in the Kerr-de Sitter spacetime to transform the metric in a generalised Bondi coordinate system. We write the metric components explicitly. Next, we choose the radial coordinate to be the areal coordinate and write the asymptotic metric in the Bondi-Sachs gauge.

Horizon Hair from Inversion Symmetry

The extreme Reissner-Nordström solution has a discrete conformal isometry that maps the future event horizon to future null infinity and vice versa, the Couch-Torrence inversion isometry. We study the dynamics of a probe Maxwell field on the extreme Reissner-Nordström solution in light of this symmetry. We present a gauge fixing that is compatible with the inversion symmetry. The gauge fixing allows us to relate the gauge parameter at the future horizon to future null infinity, which further allows us to study global charges for large gauge symmetries in the exterior of the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. Along the way, we construct Newman-Penrose and Aretakis like conserved quantities along future null infinity and the future event horizon, respectively, and relate them via the Couch-Torrence inversion symmetry.

First law of black hole mechanics with fermions

In the last few years, there has been significant interest in understanding the stationary comparison version of the first law of black hole mechanics in the vielbein formulation of gravity. Several authors have pointed out that to discuss the first law in the vielbein formulation one must extend the Iyer-Wald Noether charge formalism appropriately. Jacobson and Mohd [arXiv:1507.01054] and Prabhu [arXiv:1511.00388] formulated such a generalisation for symmetry under combined spacetime diffeomorphisms and local Lorentz transformations. In this paper, we apply and appropriately adapt their formalism to four-dimensional gravity coupled to a Majorana field and to a Rarita-Schwinger field. We explore the first law of black hole mechanics and the construction of the Lorentz-diffeomorphism Noether charges in the presence of fermionic fields, relevant for simple supergravity.

Quasinormal modes of supersymmetric microstate geometries from the D1-D5 CFT

We revisit the study of the probe scalar quasinormal modes of a class of three-charge supersymmetric microstate geometries. We compute the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal modes and show that in the parameter range when the geometries have large AdS region, the spectrum is precisely reproduced from a D1-D5 orbifold CFT analysis. The spectrum includes the slow decaying modes pointed out by Eperon, Reall, and Santos. We analyse in detail the nature of the quasinormal modes by studying the scalar wavefunction. We show that these modes correspond to slow leakage of excitation from AdS throat to infinity.

Conserved charges in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes

We present a covariant phase space construction of hamiltonian generators of asymptotic symmetries with `Dirichlet' boundary conditions in de Sitter spacetime, extending a previous study of Jäger. We show that the de Sitter charges so defined are identical to those of Ashtekar, Bonga, and Kesavan (ABK). We then present a comparison of ABK charges with other notions of de Sitter charges. We compare ABK charges with counterterm charges, showing that they differ only by a constant offset, which is determined in terms of the boundary metric alone. We also compare ABK charges with charges defined by Kelly and Marolf at spatial infinity of de sitter spacetime. When the formalisms can be compared, we show that the two definitions agree. Finally, we express Kerr-de Sitter metrics in four and five dimensions in an appropriate Fefferman-Graham form.

Generalised Garfinkle-Vachaspati Transform With Dilaton

The generalised Garfinkle-Vachaspati transform (GGV) introduced in our previous work (arXiv:1808.04981) is a powerful technique to add hair modes to a class of known D1-D5 solutions. The richest and most interesting examples of D1-D5 geometries involve the dilaton and this calls for an extension of the procedure to accommodate for the presence of the dilaton field. In this paper we present such extended version of the GGV transform. We explore this generalisation in ten-dimensions with R-R or NS-NS 2-form field and relate the two set-ups via S-duality. In the context of the D1-D5 system, this generalisation allows us to add travelling wave deformations on solutions beyond minimal six-dimensional supergravity lifted to IIB supergravity. We work out travelling wave deformations involving the torus directions on a class of supersymmetric D1-D5-P geometries. We also explore applications of our technique to the F1-P system.

A Generalised Garfinkle-Vachaspati Transform

The Garfinkle-Vachaspati transform is a deformation of a metric in terms of a null, hypersurface orthogonal, Killing vector $k^μ$. We explore a generalisation of this deformation in type IIB supergravity taking motivation from certain studies of the D1-D5 system. We consider solutions of minimal six-dimensional supergravity admitting null Killing vector $k^μ$ trivially lifted to type IIB supergravity by the addition of four-torus directions. The torus directions provide covariantly constant spacelike vectors $l^μ$. We show that the original solution can be deformed as $g_{μν} \to g_{μν} + 2 Φk_{(μ}l_{ν)}, C_{μν} \to C_{μν} - 2 Φk_{[μ}l_{ν]}$, provided the two-form supporting the original spacetime satisfies $i_k (dC) = - d k$, and where $Φ$ satisfies the equation of a minimal massless scalar field on the original spacetime. We show that the condition $i_k (dC) = - d k$ is satisfied by all supersymmetric solutions admitting null Killing vector. Hence all supersymmetric solutions of minimal six-dimensional supergravity can be deformed via this method. As an example of our approach, we work out the deformation on a class of D1-D5-P geometries with orbifolds. We show that the deformed spacetimes are smooth and identify their CFT description. Using Bena-Warner formalism, we also express the deformed solutions in other duality frames.

Geroch Group Description of Bubbling Geometries

The Riemann-Hilbert approach to studying solutions of supergravity theories allows us to associate spacetime independent monodromy matrices (matrices in the Geroch group) with solutions that effectively only depend on two spacetime coordinates. This offers insights into symmetries of supergravity theories, and in the classification of their solutions. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of monodromy matrices for multi-center solutions of five-dimensional U(1)$^3$ supergravity. We obtain monodromy matrices for a class of collinear Bena-Warner bubbling geometries. We show that for this class of solutions, monodromy matrices in the vector representation of SO(4,4) have only simple poles with residues of rank two and nilpotency degree two. These properties strongly suggest that an inverse scattering construction along the lines of [arXiv:1311.7018 [hep-th]] can be given for this class of solutions, though it is not attempted in this work. Along the way, we clarify a technical point in the existing literature: we show that the so-called "spectral flow transformations" of Bena, Bobev, and Warner are precisely a class of Harrison transformations when restricted to the situation of two commuting Killing symmetries in five-dimensions.

On Late Time Tails in an Extreme Reissner-Nordström Black Hole: Frequency Domain Analysis

In this brief note, we revisit the study of the leading order late time decay tails of massless scalar perturbations outside an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. Previous authors have analysed this problem in the time domain; we analyse the problem in the frequency domain. We first consider initial perturbations with generic regular behaviour across the horizon on characteristic surfaces. For this set-up, we reproduce some of the previous results of Sela [arXiv:1510.06169] using Fourier methods. Next, we consider related initial data on $t=\mbox{const}$ hypersurfaces, and present decay results at timelike infinity, near future null infinity, and near the future horizon. Along the way, using the $r_* \to -r_*$ inversion symmetry of the extreme Reissner-Nordström spacetime, we relate the higher multipole Aretakis and Newman-Penrose constants for a massless scalar in this background.

On Propagation of Energy Flux in de Sitter Spacetime

In this paper, we explore propagation of energy flux in the future Poincaré patch of de Sitter spacetime. We present two results. First, we compute the flux integral of energy using the symplectic current density of the covariant phase space approach on hypersurfaces of constant radial physical distance. Using this computation we show that in the tt-projection, the integrand in the energy flux expression on the cosmological horizon is same as that on the future null infinity. This suggests that propagation of energy flux in de Sitter spacetime is sharp. Second, we relate our energy flux expression in tt-projection to a previously obtained expression using the Isaacson stress-tensor approach. We also comment on the energy flux computation in TT-gauge on hypersurfaces of constant radial physical distance.

Oscillating Shells and Oscillating Balls in AdS

It has recently been reported that certain thin timelike shells undergo oscillatory motion in AdS. In this paper, we compute two-point function of a probe field in the geodesic approximation in such an oscillating shell background. We confirm that the two-point function exhibits an oscillatory behaviour following the motion of the shell. We show that similar oscillatory dynamics is possible when the perfect fluid on the shell has a polytropic equation of state. Moreover, we show that certain ball like configurations in AdS also exhibit oscillatory motion and comment on how such a solution can be smoothly matched to an appropriate exterior solution. We also demonstrate that the weak energy condition is satisfied for these oscillatory configurations.

Hair on non-extremal D1-D5 bound states

We consider a truncation of type IIB supergravity on four-torus where in addition to the Ramond-Ramond 2-form field, the Ramond-Ramond axion (w) and the NS-NS 2-form field (B) are also retained. In the (w, B) sector we construct a linearised perturbation carrying only left moving momentum on two-charge non-extremal D1-D5 geometries of Jejjala, Madden, Ross and Titchener. The perturbation is found to be smooth everywhere and normalizable. It is constructed by matching to leading order solutions of the perturbation equations in the inner and outer regions of the geometry.

Charged Vaidya Solution Satisfies Weak Energy Condition

The external matter stress-tensor supporting charged Vaidya solution appears to violate weak energy condition in certain region of the spacetime. Motivated by this, a new interpretation of charged Vaidya solution was proposed by Ori [1] in which the energy condition continues to be satisfied. In this construction, one glues an outgoing Vaidya solution to the original ingoing Vaidya solution provided the surface where the external stress-tensor vanishes is spacelike. We revisit this study and extend it to higher-dimensions, to AdS settings, and to higher-derivative f(R) theories. In asymptotically flat space context, we explore in detail the case when the mass function m(v) is proportional to the charge function q(v). When the proportionality constant ν= q(v)/m(v) lies in between zero and one, we show that the surface where the external stress-tensor vanishes is spacelike and lies in between the inner and outer apparent horizons.

Internal Structure of Charged AdS Black Holes

When an electrically charged black hole is perturbed its inner horizon becomes a singularity, often referred to as the Poisson-Israel mass inflation singularity. Ori constructed a model of this phenomenon for asymptotically flat black holes, in which the metric can be determined explicitly in the mass inflation region. In this paper we implement the Ori model for charged AdS black holes. We find that the mass function inflates faster than the flat space case as the inner horizon is approached. Nevertheless, the mass inflation singularity is still a weak singularity: although spacetime curvature becomes infinite, tidal distortions remain finite on physical objects attempting to cross it.

Smooth non-extremal D1-D5-P solutions as charged gravitational instantons

We present an alternative and more direct construction of the non-supersymmetric D1-D5-P supergravity solutions found by Jejjala, Madden, Ross and Titchener. We show that these solutions --- with all three charges and both rotations turned on --- can be viewed as a charged version of the Myers-Perry instanton. We present an inverse scattering construction of the Myers-Perry instanton metric in Euclidean five-dimensional gravity. The angular momentum bounds in this construction turn out to be precisely the ones necessary for the smooth microstate geometries. We add charges on the Myers-Perry instanton using appropriate SO(4,4) hidden symmetry transformations. The full construction can be viewed as an extension and simplification of a previous work by Katsimpouri, Kleinschmidt and Virmani.

Holographic description of non-supersymmetric orbifolded D1-D5-P solutions

Non-supersymmetric black hole microstates are of great interest in the context of the black hole information paradox. We identify the holographic description of the general class of non-supersymmetric orbifolded D1-D5-P supergravity solutions found by Jejjala, Madden, Ross and Titchener. This class includes both completely smooth solutions and solutions with conical defects, and in the near-decoupling limit these solutions describe degrees of freedom in the cap region. The CFT description involves a general class of states obtained by fractional spectral flow in both left-moving and right-moving sectors, generalizing previous work which studied special cases in this class. We compute the massless scalar emission spectrum and emission rates in both gravity and CFT and find perfect agreement, thereby providing strong evidence for our proposed identification. We also investigate the physics of ergoregion emission as pair creation for these orbifolded solutions. Our results represent the largest class of non-supersymmetric black hole microstate geometries with identified CFT duals presently known.

An Inverse Scattering Construction of the JMaRT Fuzzball

We present an inverse scattering construction in STU supergravity of the two-charge single-rotation JMaRT fuzzball. The key element in our construction is the fact that with appropriate changes in the parameters, the JMaRT fuzzball can be smoothly connected to the Myers-Perry instanton.

Geroch Group Description of Black Holes

On one hand the Geroch group allows one to associate spacetime independent matrices with gravitational configurations that effectively only depend on two coordinates. This class includes stationary axisymmetric four- and five-dimensional black holes. On the other hand, a recently developed inverse scattering method allows one to factorize these matrices to explicitly construct the corresponding spacetime configurations. In this work we demonstrate the construction as well as the factorization of Geroch group matrices for a wide class of black hole examples. In particular, we obtain the Geroch group SL(3,R) matrices for the five-dimensional Myers-Perry and Kaluza-Klein black holes and the Geroch group SU(2,1) matrix for the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman black hole. We also present certain non-trivial relations between the Geroch group matrices and charge matrices for these black holes.
