Top squark and neutralino decays in a R-parity violating model constrained by neutrino oscillation data

In a R-parity violating (RPV) model of neutrino mass with three bilinear couplings $μ_i$ and three trilinear couplings $λ'_{i33}$, where $i$ is the lepton index, we find six generic scenarios each with a distinctive pattern of the trilinear couplings consistent with the oscillation data. These patterns may be reflected in direct RPV decays of the lighter top squark or in the RPV decays of the lightest superparticle, assumed to be the lightest neutralino. Typical signal sizes at the Tevatron RUN II and the LHC have been estimated and the results turn out to be encouraging.

Rare Weak Decays and Direct Lepton Number Violating Signals in a Minimal R-Parity Violating Model of Neutrino Mass

Within the framework of R-parity violating minimal supergravity model, at least three relatively large lepton-number violating $ł'$ type trilinear couplings at the GUT scale, not directly related to neutrino physics, can naturally generate via renormalization group (RG) evolution and/or CKM rotation the highly suppressed bilinear and trilinear parameters at the weak scale required to explain the neutrino oscillation data. The structure of the RG equations and the CKM matrix restrict the choices of the three input couplings to only eight possible combinations, each with its own distinctive experimental signature. The relatively large input couplings may lead to spectacular low energy signatures like rare weak decays of the $τ$ lepton and K mesons, direct lepton number violating decays of several sparticles, and unconventional decay modes (and reduced lifetime) of the lightest neutralino, assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), all with sizable branching ratios. Several low background signals at the Tevatron and LHC have been suggested and their sizes are estimated to be at the observable level. From the particle content of the signal and the relative rate of different final states the input couplings at the GUT scale, i.e., the origin of neutrino masses and mixing angles, can be identified.

LEP Data and the Stability of the Potential Confront the mSUGRA Model

The requirement that the supersymmetric scalar potential be stable in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model imposes an upper bound on the universal gaugino mass $m_{1/2}$ as function of the common scalar mass $m_0$. Combining this with the experimental lower bound on $m_{1/2}$ from LEP data, we find a new lower bound on $m_0$, stronger than the one that comes from experimental data alone. If the corresponding upper and lower limits on the superparticle masses, presented in this letter, are found to be violated at Tevatron Run II or at the LHC, it would imply that we are living on a false vacuum. Special attention has been paid in estimating the uncertainties in these predictions due to the choice of the renormalization scale. The implications of our limits for the constraints obtained by indirect methods(SUSY dark matter, g - 2 of the muon, $ b \to s γ$....) are briefly discussed.

R-Parity violation in B --> pi+ pi- decay

We consider the impact of R-parity violating suprsymmetry in the nonleptonic decay B --> pi+ pi-. This is one of the rare instances where new physics contributes to both B-Bbar mixing and B --> pi+ pi- decay. We do a numerical analysis to capture the interplay between these two effects and place constraints on the relevant parameter space.

Top squark mass: current limits revisited and new limits from Tevatron Run-I

Analyzing the $\ell +n$-$jets+ \met$ (where $n \ge 2 $), data from Run-I of the Tevatron using the Bayesian technique, we obtain model independent limits on the product $\br(\lstop\ra be^{+}ν_e \lspone) \times \br(\lstop^{*}\ra \bar{b}q\bar{q^{\prime}}\lspone)$ for different values of the lighter top squark($\lstop$) mass and the lightest supersymmetric particle($\lspone$) mass. The SUSY signals have been simulated by interfacing the 4-body decay of $\lstop$ at the parton level with the event generator PYTHIA. These limits have been translated into exclusion plots in the $\mlstop$-$\mlspone$ plane, which also turn out to be fairly model independent for fixed values of the BR of the competing loop decay mode $\lstop\ra c \lspone$. Assuming the loop decay BR to be negligible and using the leading order cross section for $\lstoplstop$ pair production, we obtain conservatively $\mlstop \ge $77.0 (74.5) GeV for $\mlspone$=5(15) GeV, while for $\br(\lstop\ra c \lspone)$=20%, the corresponding limits are $\mlstop \ge $68.0 (65.0) GeV. Using the larger next to leading order cross-section stronger limits are obtained. For example, if $\br(\lstop\ra c \lspone)$=20%, $\mlstop \ge $73.0 (72.7) GeV for $\mlspone$=5(15) GeV. Our limits nicely complement the ALEPH bounds which get weaker for low $\mlspone$.

Effects of SO(10) D-Term on Yukawa Unification and Unstable Minima of the Supersymmetric Scalar Potential

We study the effects of SO(10) D-terms on the allowed parameter space (APS) in models with $t - b - τ$ and $b - τ$ Yukawa unifiction. The former is allowed only for moderate values of the D-term, if very precise ($\le$ 5%) unification is required. Next we constrain the parameter space by looking for different dangerous directions where the scalar potential may be unbounded from below (UFB1 and UFB3). The common trilinear coupling $A_0$ plays a significant role in constraing the APS. For very precise $t - b - τ$ Yukawa unification, $-m_{16} < or \approx A_0 < or \approx m_{16}$ can be probed at the LHC, where $m_{16}$ is the common soft breaking mass for the sfermions. Moreover, an interesting mass hierarchy with very heavy sfermions but light gauginos, which is strongly disfavoured in models without D-terms, becomes fairly common in the presence of the D-terms. The APS exhibits interesting characteristics if $m_{16}$ is not the same as the soft breaking mass $m_{10}$ for the Higgs sector. In $b - τ$ unification models with D-terms, the APS consistent with Yukawa unification and radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, increases as the UFB1 constraint becomes weaker. However for $A_0 \leq 0$, a stronger UFB3 condition still puts, for a given $m_{16}$, a stringent upper bound on the common gaugino mass ($m_{1/2}$) and a lower bound on $m_{16}$ for a given $m_{1/2}$. The effects of sign of $μ$ on Yukawa unification and UFB constraints are also discussed.

Probing R-parity violating models of neutrino mass at the Tevatron via top Squark decays

We have estimated the limiting branching ratio of the R-parity violating (RPV) decay of the lighter top squark, $\tilde t_1 \ar l^+ d$ ($l=e$ or $μ$ and d is a down type quark of any flavor), as a function of top squark mass($\MST$) for an observable signal in the di-lepton plus di-jet channel at the Tevatron RUN-II experiment with 2 fb$^{-1}$ luminosity. Our simulations indicate that the lepton number violating nature of the underlying decay dynamics can be confirmed via the reconstruction of $\MST$. The above decay is interesting in the context of RPV models of neutrino mass where the RPV couplings ($λ'_{i3j}$) driving the above decay are constrained to be small ($\lsim 10^{-3} - 10^{-4} $). If $\tilde t_1$ is the next lightest super particle - a theoretically well motivated scenario - then the RPV decay can naturally compete with the R-parity conserving (RPC) modes which also have suppressed widths. The model independent limiting BR can delineate the parameter space in specific supersymmetric models, where the dominating RPV decay is observable and predict the minimum magnitude of the RPV coupling that will be sensitive to Run-II data. We have found it to be in the same ballpark value required by models of neutrino mass, for a wide range of $\MST$. A comprehensive future strategy for linking top squark decays with models of neutrino mass is sketched.

Are light sneutrinos buried in LEP data?

Supersymmetry may resolve the disagreement between the precision electroweak data and the direct limit on the higgs mass, if there are light sneutrinos in the mass range 55 GeV $ < m_{\snu} < $ 80 GeV. Such sneutrinos should decay invisibly with 100% branching ratio and contribute to the $γ$ + missing energy signal, investigated by all the LEP groups. It is shown that while the data accumulated by a single group may not be adequate to reveal such sneutrinos, a combined analysis of the data collected by all four groups will be sensitive to $m_{\snu}$ in the above range. If no signal is found a lower bound on $m_{\snu}$ stronger than that obtained from the $Z$-pole data may emerge.

Does CPT violation affect the B_d meson life times and decay asymmetries?

We study indirect CPT violating effects in B_d meson decays and mixing, taking into account the recent constraints on the CPT violating parameters from the Belle collaboration. The life time difference of the B_d meson mass eigenstates, expected to be negligible in the standard model and many of its CPT conserving extensions, could be sizeable (\sim a few percent of the total width) due to breakdown of this fundamental symmetry. The time evolution of the direct CP violating asymmetries in one amplitude dominated processes (inclusive semileptonic B_d decays, in particular) turn out to be particularly sensitive to this effect.

Four Body Decay of the Stop Squark at the Upgraded Tevatron

We investigate the prospect of stop squark search at Tevatron RUN-II in mSUGRA motivated as well as unconstrained supersymmetric models, when the lighter stop squark turns out to be the next lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). In this case the decay into a 4-body final state consisting of a b quark, the lightest neutralino and two light fermions may compete with the much publicized loop induced two body decay into a charm quark and the lightest neutralino. We systematically study the parameter space in mSUGRA where the lighter stop squark turns out to be the NLSP and calculate the branching ratios of the competing channels in both models. Our results show that the four body decay may indeed be the main discovery channel particularly in the low tan $β$ scenarios. We discuss the detectability of stop squark pairs in the 4-body decay channel leading to one lepton with 2 or more jets accompanied by a large amount of missing energy. We also studied the corresponding background processes and the kinematic cuts required to suppress them using parton level Monte Carlo simulations. We have commented upon with illustrative examples, the required revision of the existing mass limits of the stop NLSP assumed to decay solely into the loop induced 2-body channel in the presence of the competing 4-body decay.

Electroweak Precision Data, Light Sleptons and Stability of the SUSY Scalar Potential

The light slepton-sneutrino scenario with non-universal scalar masses at the GUT scale is preferred by the electroweak precision data. Though a universal soft breaking mass at or below the Plank scale can produce the required non-universality at the GUT scale through running, such models are in conflict with the stability of the electroweak symmetry breaking vacuum. If the supergravity motivated idea of a common scalar mass at some high scale along with light sleptons is supported by future experiments that may indicate that we are living in a false vacuum. In contrast SO(10) D-terms, which may arise if this GUT group breaks down directly to the Standard Model, can lead to this spectrum with many striking phenomenological predictions, without jeopardizing vacuum stability.

New Bounds on Slepton and Wino Masses in Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Models

We show how the spectrum of the minimal anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking model can be constrained from the condition that the electroweak symmetry breaking minimum of the scalar potential is the deepest point in the field space. Applying the current experimental bounds and scanning over the whole parameter space, we rule out selectrons below 378 GeV and staus below 269 GeV, the numbers having a modest uncertainty. We also find a new upper bound on the wino-like chargino mass for a given slepton mass. This rules out the possibility of slepton pair production at ongoing or upcoming colliders like the Tevatron or the Next Linear Collider at $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV, where pair production of charginos may be the only available signal.

Can R-parity violation lower $\sin 2β$?

Recent time-dependent CP asymmetry measurements in the $B_d \to J/ψK_S$ channel by the BaBar and Belle Collaborations yield somewhat lower values of $\sin 2β$ compared to the one obtained from the standard model fit. If the inconsistency between these numbers persists with more statistics, this will signal new physics contaminating the $B_d \to J/ψK_S$ channel, thus disturbing the extraction of $β$. We show that the R-parity-violating interactions in supersymmetric theories can provide extra new phases which play a role in significantly reducing the above CP asymmetry, thus explaining why BaBar and Belle report lower values of $\sin 2β$. The same couplings also affect the $B_d \to ϕK_S$ decay rate and asymmetry, explain the $B \to η' K$ anomaly, and predict nonzero CP asymmetry in dominant $B_s$ decays. The scenario will be tested in the ongoing and upcoming B factories.

Testing the AMSB Model via $e^+e^- \to \tildeχ^+ \tildeχ^- γ$}

The possibility of detecting the signature of a nearly invisible charged wino ($\CH$) decaying into a soft pion and the LSP($\LSP$), predicted by the Anomaly Mediated Symmetry Breaking model, via the process $e^+e^-\rγ{\tildeχ}^{+}{\tildeχ}^{-}$ at the Next Linear Collider has been explored. Using the recently, proposed bounds on slepton and wino masses derived from the condition of stability of the electroweak symmetry breaking vacuum and employing some standared kinematical cuts to supress the background, we find that almost the whole of the allowed parameter space with the slepton mass less than 1 TeV, can be probed at $\sqrt{s}$ 500 GeV. Determination of the slepton and the chargino masses from this signal is a distinct possiblity. Any violation of the above mass bound will suggest that the standard vacuum is unstable and we are living in a false vacuum.

LHC Signature of the Minimal SUGRA Model with a Large Soft Scalar Mass

Thanks to the focus point phenomenon, it is quite {\it natural} for the minimal SUGRA model to have a large soft scalar mass m_0 > 1 TeV. A distinctive feature of this model is an inverted hierarchy, where the lighter stop has a significantly smaller mass than the other squarks and sleptons. Consequently, the gluino is predicted to decay dominantly via stop exchange into a channel containing 2b and 2W along with the LSP. We exploit this feature to construct a robust signature for this model at the LHC in leptonic channels with 3-4 b-tags and a large missing-E_T.

Signatures of the Light Down-Squark Scenario at the Upgraded Tevatron

In scenarios with relatively light down squarks, motivated, e.g., by SO(10) D terms, jets + missing $E_T$ signals can be observed at the luminosity upgraded Tevatron even if the squarks are much heavier than the gluinos and the common gaugino mass ($M_{1/2}$) at $M_G$ lies above the LEP allowed lower bound. In the conventional mSUGRA model with heavy squarks practically no signal is expected in this channel. The possiblity of distinguishing between various SUGRA motivated scenarios by exploiting the missing $E_T$ and jet $p_T$ distributions, opposite sign dileptons + jets + missing $E_T$ events and clean trilepton signals have been discussed.

Yukawa Unification and Unstable Minima of the Supersymmetric Scalar Potential

Motivated by the possibilities of $b-τ$ or $t-b-τ$ Yukawa unification in the supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories, we consider the dangerous directions of the supersymmetric potential for large values of $\tanβ(\geq 30)$, in two versions of the minimal supergravity model with and without common soft breaking scalar masses at the GUT scale, where the potential may become unbounded from below. We find that for the common trilinear coupling $A_0 \leq 0$ the requirement of $b-τ$ unification in conjunction with the stability condition on the potential yields highly restrictive sparticle spectra with upper, and in many cases, lower bounds stronger than the available experimental lower bounds, on the soft SUSY breaking common scalar mass and the common gaugino mass. Over a significant region of the parameter space, the model becomes even more restrictive if the common sfermion soft mass is different from the soft mass for the Higgs sector. We also find that the bulk of this restricted parameter space can be probed at the LHC. Im models with $t-b-τ$ Yukawa unification, $A_0 \leq 0$ is ruled out from potential constraints.
