Azuma-Hoeffding bounds for a class of urn models

We obtain Azuma bounds for the probabilities of being away from the limit for a class of urn models. The method consists of relating the variables to certain linear combinations using eigenvectors of the replacement matrix, thus bringing in appropriate martingales. Some cases of repeated eigenvalues are also considered using Jordan vectors.

S.L.L.N. and C.L.T. for Random Walks in I.I.D. Random Environment on Cayley Trees

We consider the random walk in an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random environment on a Cayley graph of a finite free product of copies of $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$. Such a Cayley graph is readily seen to be a regular tree. Under a uniform elipticity assumption on the i.i.d. environment we show that the walk has positive speed and establish the annealed central limit theorem for the graph distance of the walker from the starting point.

Nash twist and Gaussian noise measure on isometric $C^1$ maps

Starting with a short map $f_0:I\to \mathbb R^3$ on the unit interval $I$, we construct random isometric map $f_n:I\to \mathbb R^3$ (with respect to some fixed Riemannian metrics) for each positive integer $n$, such that the difference $(f_n - f_0)$ goes to zero in the $C^0$ norm. The construction of $f_n$ uses the Nash twist. We show that the distribution of $ n^{1/2} (f_n - f_0)$ converges (weakly) to a Gaussian noise measure.

A Measure on the space of Lipschitz isometric maps of a compact 1-manifold into $\mathbb R^2$

Let $M$ be a compact 1-manifold. Given a continuous function $g:M\to \mathbb R_+$ we consider the following ordinary differential equation: $\|\dot{f}(t)\|=g(t)$, where $f:M\to \mathbb R^2$. We construct a probability measure on the space of almost everywhere differentiable solutions of this differential equation and study this measure. A solution of this equation can be viewed as an isometric immersion of a compact 1-manifold into $\mathbb R^2$. Nash's convergence technique in the proof of isometric $C^1$-immersion theorem plays an important role in the construction.

Random Walks in I.I.D. Random Environment on Cayley Trees

We consider the random walk in an \emph{i.i.d.} random environment on the infinite $d$-regular tree for $d \geq 3$. We consider the tree as a Cayley graph of free product of finitely many copies of $\Zbold$ and $\Zbold_2$ and define the i.i.d. environment as invariant under the action of this group. Under a mild non-degeneracy assumption we show that the walk is always transient.

An Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process associated to self-normalized sums

We consider an Ornstein-Uhleneck (OU) process associated to self-normalised sums in i.i.d. symmetric random variables from the domain of attraction of $N(0, 1)$ distribution. We proved the self-normalised sums converge to the OU process (in $C[0, \infty)$). Importance of this is that the OU process is a stationary process as opposed to the Brownian motion, which is a non-stationary distribution (see for example, the invariance principle proved by Csorgo et al (2003, Ann Probab) for self-normalised sums that converges to Brownian motion). The proof uses recursive equations similar to those that arise in the area of stochastic approximation and it shows (through examples) that one can simulate any functionals of any segment of the OU process. The similar things can be done for any diffusion process as well.

Strong Laws for Urn Models with Balanced Replacement Matrices

We consider an urn model, whose replacement matrix has all entries nonnegative and is balanced, that is, has constant row sums. We obtain the rates of the counts of balls corresponding to each color for the strong laws to hold. The analysis requires a rearrangement of the colors in two steps. We first reduce the replacement matrix to a block upper triangular one, where the diagonal blocks are either irreducible or the scalar zero. The scalings for the color counts are then given inductively depending on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalues of the irreducible diagonal blocks. In the second step of the rearrangement, the colors are further rearranged to reduce the block upper triangular replacement matrix to a canonical form. Under a further mild technical condition, we obtain the scalings and also identify the limits. We show that the limiting random variables corresponding to the counts of colors within a block are constant multiples of each other. We provide an easy-to-understand explicit formula for them as well. The model considered here contains the urn models with irreducible replacement matrix, as well as, the upper triangular one and several specific block upper triangular ones considered earlier in the literature and gives an exhaustive picture of the color counts in the general case with only possible restrictions that the replacement matrix is balanced and has nonnegative entries.

Multicolor urn models with reducible replacement matrices

Consider the multicolored urn model where, after every draw, balls of the different colors are added to the urn in a proportion determined by a given stochastic replacement matrix. We consider some special replacement matrices which are not irreducible. For three- and four-color urns, we derive the asymptotic behavior of linear combinations of the number of balls. In particular, we show that certain linear combinations of the balls of different colors have limiting distributions which are variance mixtures of normal distributions. We also obtain almost sure limits in certain cases in contrast to the corresponding irreducible cases, where only weak limits are known.

Strong laws for balanced triangular urns

Consider an urn model whose replacement matrix is triangular, has all entries nonnegative and the row sums are all equal to one. We obtain the strong laws for the counts of balls corresponding to each color. The scalings for these laws depend on the diagonal elements of a rearranged replacement matrix. We use the strong laws obtained to study further behavior of certain three color urn models.

Maxima of Dirichlet and triangular arrays of gamma variables

Consider a rowwise independent triangular array of gamma random variables with varying parameters. Under several different conditions on the shape parameter, we show that the sequence of row-maximums converges weakly after linear or power transformation. Depending on the parameter combinations, we obtain both Gumbel and non-Gumbel limits. The weak limits for maximum of the coordinates of certain Dirichlet vectors of increasing dimension are also obtained using the gamma representation.

A functional central limit theorem for a class of urn models

We construct an independent increments Gaussian process associated to a class of multicolor urn models. The construction uses random variables from the urn model which are different from the random variables for which central limit theorems are available in the two color case.

Central limit theorems for a class of irreducible multicolor urn models

We take a unified approach to central limit theorems for a class of irreducible urn models with constant replacement matrix. Depending on the eigenvalue, we consider appropriate linear combinations of the number of balls of different colors. Then under appropriate norming the multivariate distribution of the weak limits of these linear combinations is obtained and independence and dependence issues are investigated.
